Our No. 1 draft pick gets 3 snaps in the biggest game of the season. A game where SF is crushing the starters. Speaks volumes.

That too was the first thing I noticed - completely overwhelmed and he doesn't even get on the field. Is he fast enough to move inside? Maybe pairing Gary and Martinez? if not, don't keep him around and magnify the colossal mistake.

If the Packers play Gary as little this upcoming season as they did this past season It will be proven to have been a wasted pick. The same could be said about Owen Burks and Josh Jackson.

Hounddog....who knows how Gary will pan out but even if he is a bust the draft gave us two players On the all rookie team. When was the last time they had two on the all rookie team? To describe Gutey’s draft to TT is just wrong.

To compare him to many of TT's First Round Picks is justified, check the records.
Do the names Derek Sherrod, Nick Perry, Datone Jones, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, and Damarius Randall ring any bells?
That's five out of six of TTs most recent first round picks.
Only Kenny Clark (in 2016) remains of his last 6 first round picks.

(Bak, Jones , Adams ,Bulaga, Martinez - recently )The draft is a difficult process. Only when TT is compared to the rest of the NFL teams' drafts do we see how great he really was , especially when you consider that he picked low.

I'll agree with that Leche, but I believe the #12 pick in the draft should be more than a (seldom used) part time player even in his first year.
Hoping he pans out and becomes an integral part, but it might take a new DC to see that.
A "Great Athlete" that can't find his way onto the field has no value.

I doubt anything would have mattered much yesterday Leatherhead, but when your first-round, #12 pick, doesn't play, I think it raises questions. The depth chart SHOULD have nothing to do with "putting your best players on the field", you find a way to get them in the game. If you're right, and I hope you are, see "New DC" above.

We will never know, will we? Gary couldn't take snaps away from Fackrell 18 games into his NFL career even in a game where Fackrell's ability to drop into coverage wasn't much of a factor. That we do know.

Gary should have been in more packages as the year progressed. That's on Pettine. Just line him up and shoot the gaps.
The Pack LBs looked like a set of pins ready to be washed out on the wide-zone run schemes. Nobody busting up the lead blocker. Reading the edge like a bad book report. They should have been attacking from snap one. P.Smith was just aimless on his spot and the ran away from ZaDarious. No depth at the DT spot. Pennell moves on to KC and does a good job on SAT. If this defense stays the same the results will be the same next season. Lindsley has been under the spot light all year. Upgrade needed there. Again, the inside people get stunted to death over the center and Turner. Bulaga lost a step. Need a true Fullback for the lead. Beautiful sight watching the 49rs executing the inside trap game. Something lost on the Packer the past 15 years. Basics: Find LBs willing to hit and run. Amos is a 50/50 guy in the run stop.
Campbell should be cut yesterday.

Lots of scapegoating going on. I think we can all agree we’re going to have to improve the run defense but there’s a lot of different ideas on how to do that.

Most of our front seven is under contract for next year. Fackrell and Martinez are FAs and will attract good offers in FA. If we let them both leave that’ll be 2 of the top 7 linebackers we need to replace plus any improvements to the DLine or secondary. And that’s just the defense.

I think we should draft an ILB in the top 100 AND keep Martinez. There’s no doubt we could use a monster horse on the defensive line. This was an above average defense in 2019; we should strengthen it instead of blowing it up.

That speedy LB was supposed to be Burks. It would be nice if he could stay healthy and be that guy, but at this point I don't think we can rely on him to be. So we have to add a speedy LB and at this point if we get more out of Burks that is a bonus.

This is my list of players who I think should have got more snaps and who should have had less snaps.

Not enough snaps:
-MVS should have received more snaps IMO. Especially when we needed a deep threat. We could have really used his speed.
-Sternberger I felt could and should have had a lot more snaps as well. He is a faster TE that could have provided something to the passing game.
-Gary. I don't get how he got 3 snaps. Especially when they were struggling to stop the run. Gary needed more reps.
-Burks. When they were getting gashed outside, they should have brought him in to see if he could cover the ground that Goodson couldn't.
-Keke really played well once he came in. They relied on the starting 3 way to much. Keke came in and helped stuffed the run when he was in there. He is a guy to watch next year btw.
-Jackson. After Alexander went out I would have liked to have seen Jackson come in. He is a more physical player and would have been better on the outside against the run.

To many snaps:
-Goodson. He is ok at run stopping up the middle. But when SF was running outside down after down, that is just not Goodson's strength. They should have used Burks, or should have done what they did late in the game and brought in an extra OLB.
-Allison continued to get way to many snaps. He just provides nothing. MVS's speed should have been brought in and used more instead of Allison.
-Lancaster/Lowry. As physical as the 49ers were they needed to get the backups in more and rotate more. Keeping everyone fresh would have been a better idea.
-Fackrell had 20 snaps. Not a ton, but when Gary had 3, he should have hade a few less.

No one will ever, except for Pettine, understand why we didn't see more of our #1 pick. Your assessment of him is very interesting. We all probably knew or played with the guy who looks like Adonis, runs fast and looks great in the drills, but can't hit or play the game for shit. I hope this is not the case. If he can't play the game, we don't know it because he gets so little time. I thought he looked pretty good at times when he did get on the field during the season and by now, he should have been part of the changes we were promised after week 12's debacle. I am hoping a great DC becomes available!

Richard Sherman post game comments on Packers
There was a ton of confidence,” Sherman said. “We took our starters out in the fourth quarter of that (37-8) game. It could have been worse. And we knew that. I think they were trying pump themselves up. They were trying to hype themselves up talking about a revenge game. Like they weren’t coming in with an advantage into the game (in November). We were coming off a battle with Seattle and they were coming off a bye.

“So saying ‘payback’ -- when you stay ready you don’t have to get ready. They were trying to hype themselves up like ‘Man, we’re going to be ready this time.’ You weren’t ready the first time. And that was in front the whole country. That was a Sunday night game. That wasn't just a middle-of-the-day, one o’clock game. It kind of bothered us a little bit. They were like, ‘Oh my God, we’re going to be ready this time.’ Do you not take the game seriously? When do we not take games seriously in the regular season? If you had won that one, you would have had the one seed and we would have been going to Green Bay. But, hey, that wasn’t that big a deal. You’re going to be ready this time.”

Sherman is absolutely right. While everyone here was hyped over the additions of Ervin and Veldeheer, San Fran, already a better team than the Packers, went out and got Sanders. While the Packers drafted Gary, maybe the biggest bust in the draft, and not a single receiver, the 49ers drafted Deebo Samuel. Who wouldn't make that exchange right now? Sherman was right only to a degree, this Packer team kept claiming after almost every game that it was getting better, yet Pettine's D was average to bad and the offense generally was awful. Every game seemed like it could have been or should have been a loss. The Packers were called the worst 13-3 team ever and it's at least certain they are one of the worst. It was an embarrassing display and Sherman was right to call them out.

Naturally, Sherman is correct. He changes the field. How many Packers change the field? We knew what the deficiencies were all season long. Big DTs were not on the menu with Pettine playing to stop the pass. Gutedkunst did not bag anothe r WR at the trade deadline. Lindsley was showing vulnerability the past couple years with bull rushers.
It was a really good year for a first time Head Coach. Maybe he brings in his own guy for the DC job and gets a paradigm shift from" bend no break " defensive philosophy. Still comes down to players that can run and hit the opponent at the line of scrimmage.

Perhaps i missed the talking Sherman refers to, I don't remember anyone saying payback and such talk., but I don't read all the printed hype. That type of talk only gives your opponent more motivation, something the 49'ers certainly did not need more of after the whipping in game 12 they gave us. But, the only satisfaction this game provided for me was Te beating Sherman off the line for that great pass from AR. Sherman may still be the best in the game and for Te to beat him, I think it speaks volumes for what we Packer fans know, Te is one of the elite WR's in the game. I am going to keep this memory and do my best to wipe out all other memory of this game for the off season.

I have to agree with many on this board about Gary. Something just doesn't make sense. How could your first first round Draft choice not see the field in this game? My suspicions are as follows:

1) Before the draft there was talk Gary had a shoulder problem. The packers management knows this and is waiting until the off season for him to have surgery. They as usual were not honest with the fans...sound familiar?

2) He's not that smart and can't grasp the defense and his assignments. Needs more time to learn his "new" position" and will work it eventually out.

3) He's a bust! Just wasn't that good and which has been a recurrent theme with the scouting department (which is not very good)

The real problem here is no. 3. Bad talent evaluation. This last draft 2 players contributed to any real degree the rest....let's see what next year produces....i'm skeptical.

Debo Samuel would have looked good in Green & Gold, maybe I should be picking those draft choices with my dart board haha!

When does the Fire PETTINE train come around?
I would like to jump on board!

Overall fun season though and seriously they did better that most of us thought.

Hope they can make some moves to get them over the hump and make up for Rodgers declining physical talent.

Frustrated today but after a day of mourning and a half bottle of Jim Beam and some beer chasers things will start to look up for Fall of 2020.

Fans just being fans. Last year the Packers were a complete mess. The Coach was fired during the season. We didn’t come anywhere near a playoff spot.

The next year the team wins 13 games during the season. Wins a playoff game and plays in the NFC Championship game. Many on here would have laughed (and Did) if someone before the season would have predicted it! Many of you predicted 7-9 and Worse!

Now, what do you read on here? Defensive Coordinator should be fired. Packers can’t evaluate talent. Our 21 or 22 year old #1 draft pick is a complete bust. Packers aren’t tough enough. It’s pathetic. I doubt some of you are really fans.

Sure some changes are inevitable. Some players weren’t good enough. However, Gute pulled off a magic act to get us this far. How about a little perspective as to how far this team has come and what a great ride this season was. We have a solid GM and a now more experienced 2nd year coach. I expect that we might find a free agent or two. I expect we might draft a play maker or two in the draft. Next year we are going to be right in the mix.

For those already declaring that Gary is a bust need to go back and watch the tape of the extremely limited snaps he was in. Out of the maybe 10 snaps/game, Gary did make an impact and was putting pressure on the QB. The guy did have 2 sacks as well for hardly seeing the field. As of right now I think there is a certain favoritism going on in the clubhouse for seniority. Look no further than GMO and Fackrell who both were given more snaps than they deserved. It would have been nice to see MVS and Gary get those snaps instead. Fortunately both Fack and GMO will be adios after this season.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Fackrell gets more snaps because he is a more complete player. Fackrell can drop back into coverage and can get pressure on the QB. Gary can't drop into coverage at all. Gary is better against the run but both miss too many tackles (Gary = 12.5% and Fackrell = 13.6%). Fackrell had 2 TFL in 442 snaps and Gary had 3 TFL in 220, so about double Fackrell's rate.

Gary: 220 snaps = 5 pressures (1 pressure/44 snaps).
Fack: 442 snaps = 12 pressures (1/36.8 snaps).

Fackrell is a slightly better pass rusher overall. Not a significant difference in pass rushing pressure rate. However, Fackrell had 10 QB hits (1/44.2 snaps) whereas Gary had 3 in 220 snaps (1/73.3 snaps). Fackrell knocked the QB to the ground 7 times in 442 snaps (1 every 63 snaps, not including 1 sack) while Gary knocked the QB down 1 times in 220 (1 every 220) but also had 2 sacks.

* Note that PFR is chintzy with pressures. PFR gave Zadarius 50 pressures whereas I believe PFF has him in the eighties or nineties.

It seems clear that MVS is odd man out in 2020. Who knows what'll happen to Equanimous St. Brown too.

What good is Rashan Gary if he never plays? I get that we have the Smiths at OLB, but then put him at ILB, GET HIM ON THE FIELD!! He'll never learn from the bench!

And Montravius Adams. Wow. 6 snaps for a 3rd round DT out of Auburn. It's clear that he's nearly toast as well. So much all the pre-season talk about him progressing. What a joke.

See what Belichick does with him if he's cut.

Other than drafting a WR, once again the Pack have to draft more talent on defense. Check out SF, they drafted at least 3 starters. And they all had impact games against the Packers. Lynch has a better eye for talent. So another year to get more impact players though free agency and maybe hit on one or two rookies.

Drop Pettine, Martinez, Graham and restructure Rodgers. Perhaps they think about trading Rodgers to get enough players through the trade to raise the overall talent. And get enough for Rodgers while they can. Take a hit for one or two years and then be ready to make a run at the Super Bowl. Pick up a veteran QB that still might be able to guide the Pack while they wait for a rookie QB to develop,

Lets not give up on Gary, compare his stats to the no.4 pick Clelin Ferrell.

Ferrell: Tackles 38, Solo 24, Sacks 4.5, Fumble recovery , On 62% of Defensive Snaps
Gary: Tackles 23, Solo 13, Sacks 2.0, Fumble recovery 1, On 24% of Defensive Snaps

Great season compared to last 2 years GPG!

If you have a good player, you play him! You don't play seniority. There has to be a reason Gary didn't play more snaps. In my previous post I mention some thoughts on him. i would certainly love to have him "Bloom" into an All Pro. Something not "Kosher" here we just don't know what it is!

The scariest part of the snap counts is the DL snap counts and Goodson's.

DL 151 snaps/55 plays = 2.75 DL on the field.
ILB 99 snaps/55 plays = 1.80 ILB on the field. Goodson: 71% of snaps.
OLB 126 snaps/55 plays=2.29 OLBs on the field.
6.84 front seven guys on the field.

Presumbly Z. Smith played some snaps inside on the line.

That suggests to me that Pettine's personnel choice was to play his best run-stuffing players a lot, and in a true 3-4 defense. And GB still got trucked.

It could still be a coaching problem rather than a personnel problem. Perhaps the players didn't have the right reads or keys. Martinez has been quoted that the defensive players didn't understand what SF was trying to do. We know that SF was trying to run, so he is going deeper. IIRC, 3-4 defenses are supposed to be good against the run, no?

IDK.

*I know that my math is off above and should be Gary has three times as many TFL as Fackrell whereas I wrote just twice. Too lazy (got bumped off the thread to edit it again.
