Packers Snap Counts Versus Baltimore: Week Fifteen

Packers outlast the Ravens to earn their 11th victory and retain the number one seed in the NFC.

The Packers activated Jordan Love from the Covid Reserve List earlier this week but placed defensive lineman Kenny Clark on the Covid List.  The Packers elevated Cole Van Lanen and Abdullah Anderson from the Practice Squad to the active roster.  Neither was designated as a Covid Replacement Player (for Clark), which seems odd.

Equinimeous St. Brown (concussion), David Bakhtiari (knee), Billy Turner (knee) and Dominique Dafney (ankle) were inactive due to injury.  Safety Shawn Davis, Vernon Scott, and Jack Heflin were healthy inactives.  Jordan Love, Jake Van Lanen and Cole Hanson were active but did not play.

The Packers' offensive line played pretty well, particularly in pass protection.  The running backs received 20 carries and gained 80 yards, a 4.0-yard average.  The backs made some nice cuts to help the line look good.  The pass protection overall was very good.  Rodgers was sacked 3 times, including a free run given up by Kelly and another time when Newman got overpowered.  Rodgers often had very good time to throw and a lot of clean pockets.

Rodgers played well overall.  He finished with a 132.2 passer rating.  He overthrew a touch pass to Adams early and another pass in the end zone to Lazard, although that perhaps was catchable (it would have been a nice catch).  With Davante Adams limited to an average depth of target of just 5.5 yards (he finished with 6 receptions on 7 targets for just 44 yards), Rodgers threw some dimes.  As much as I tend to support Valdes-Scantling, I have to acknowledge that on 3 of his receptions totaling perhaps 68 yards (including his touchdown reception), Rodgers threw him open, including one pass that was Favrian.

Marcedes Lewis continues to provide some spark on offense, finishing this game with 3 receptions on 3 targets for 40 yards.  Tyler Davis chipped in 22 receiving yards and Deguara added 16.  The Packers played 1.37 tight ends per play on average, continuing a trend of higher snap counts for tight ends lately.

This was not one of the better results on defense.  The Ravens' backup quarterback, Tyler Huntley, did a fine job replacing Lamar Jackson, but he is limited as a passer.  His placement of the ball was not always good, and he clearly was reluctant to throw the ball downfield, much less deep, except to the Ravens' one-man wrecking crew, Mark Andrews.  Other than Andrews, Huntley's longest completed pass went for 8 yards.  Andrews caught 10 of 13 targets for 136, and picked up 10 of the Ravens' 12 receiving first downs, per Pro Football Focus.  Darnell Savage appeared to draw the brunt of having to defend Andrews, though I saw King and Sullivan in coverage as well.

However, Huntley did not throw an interception or fumble the ball.  While he completed 28 of 40 passes (70%), he averaged just 5.38 yards per attempt.  He did run 13 times (8 scrambles) for 73 yards, a 5.6-yard average.  His running backs added 70 more rushing yards on 13 carries, a 5.38-yard average.  The Packers did a nice job defending the Ravens' two very fast wide receivers, Hollywood Brown and Devin Duvernay.  Brown finished with just 43 yards on 10 receptions (14 targets), good for a 4.3-yard average per reception and just 3.07-yards per target.  Brown had been averaging 72.2 yards per game.  Duvernay finished with 3 receptions for 13 yards, also a 4.3-yard average.

The interesting snap counts include Henry Black earning just one snap and Kevin King getting just 13 snaps.  That is not new for King but Black had been getting more action.  Defensive End Abdullah Anderson logged 18 snaps but had no statistics.  He played while Heflin was a healthy scratch.  Amari Rodgers cannot get on the field on offense, and was replaced by Sullivan on punt returns.  Aaron Jones returned a kickoff.

Gary and Smith each were credited with 5 pressures but too often the Packers lost containment.  Slaton and Lancaster each had 4 tackles and each played 25 snaps, but Lowry had just one assisted tackle and Keke had no tackles.  Keke did bat down a pass and PFF credited Keke with 2 pressures.  PFF listed Lowry with zero pressures but indicated that five defensive linemen (which includes OLBs) had at least 2 pressures.  That suggest that two other unnamed defensive linemen had at least two pressures each.  Campbell finished with 10 tackles (5 solo), 1 tackle for loss, and he had the only sack.  Gary added a quarterback hit.

The special teams were again horrible.  In the Watch Party Thread, we listed 6 poor plays from special teams, although perhaps Bojorquez's shanked punt should not be included since it netted 40 yards.  The positive were a couple of nice punts and Tyler Davis electing to do his job (blocking) on the onside punt, which allowed Dillon to recover the onside kick.

This was a weird game. I always thought the Packers were going to win the game, but it came down to the last offensive play by Baltimore. Harbaugh is getting a lot of criticism for his in-game decisions, and that criticism might well be fair, but the Ravens had a fine game plan and were a very disciplined team. Both teams were down star players, but a backup QB is a backup QB.

We are starting to see the "all hands on deck" scenario mentioned by LaFleur, as the Packers tightened up their rotations. The DBs are 5 guys plus King for breathers. Not sure if Black was injured, was a bad match up for the Ravens, or if he is being phased out.

I guess they like Heflin long-term, enough to carry on the team but apparently they don't think he is ready to play. Abdullah Anderson had played in 7 game and played some 116 NFL snaps, so perhaps he is more NFL ready than Heflin.

Rasul Douglas had 8 solo tackles (9 per ESPN), and Amos had 8 and Stokes 7. PFF thought the ILBs did well in coverage.

Lowry without Clark looked weak against the run and ineffective rushing. Lancaster isn’t going to get many pressures, he’s just a clogger. Slaton really didn’t either, which perhaps is more of a surprise. We really missed Clark as I thought they would.

I thought one catch by MVS was really impressive on his part, coming back to an under thrown ball. Overall no I did not see a particular basis for your “thrown open” comment. I did like how they used him in different positions on the field not just fired the perimeter. The end zone throw to Lazard was just overthrown. I wouldn’t call that catchable. That one was just a throw that got away, as Rodgers face showed.

I didn’t like the reluctance to use Dillon. We let them sit back and cover in numbers. I think LaFleur got too cocky snd thought we could just dominate that secondary and, by doing so, made it harder by letting them play light boxes.

Equally, I think Barry underestimated Huntley. No spy, seemingly not a contain first mandate as we saw against the likes of Murray. Much like Fields, we just seemed content to let him do his thing. Equally, the plan for Andrews seemed to neglect the fact that he is by far their best receiver and preferred target. Neither LaFleur nor Barry seemed to have gone into this game with the right plan.

Special teams was woeful. They even managed a delay of game on a punt. LaFleur can waffle all he likes, Drayton looks so out of his depth that he’s no business coordinating. This game only confirmed that the unit is in disarray and has become a target as a result.

PFF indicated 5 DL guys with at least 2 pressures and listed Gary, Preston and Keke as three of them. No clue who the other two might turn out to be. I didn't see Slaton, Lancaster or Anderson apply any pressure, nor Tipa or Garvin. In any event, too many of those pressures just led to productive scrambles by Huntley. We agree on the player evaluations.

I keep writing that MVS will earn an $8M to $10M contract as a FA. It is out of character for me to ascribe credit for his productivity to AR. IMO, AR dropped 3 dimes on MVS that few other QBs would have attempted. The 32, 25 and 11-yard TD passes, specifically. We just disagree.

There were two passes to Lazard in the endzone. One was basically uncatchable though Lazard got one hand on it. That would have been career highlight film worthy had he caught it. I thought the other one gets caught sometimes. That one should have been an easy pitch and catch but it got away from AR. Should have been easy, but that does not mean it does not get caught sometimes. We disagree.

I agree that GB didn't run enough to force Baltimore to commit to the front 7 (like to see numbers for Baltimore's snap counts because that's the way I am). Adams is too good to completely stop but Baltimore limited him as well as any team. Need more from Lazard and I thought AR had to fit balls into tight windows for MVS. There was the long pass to the right side that was underthrown (I think intentionally) because MVS was surrounded by three Baltimore players and a pass that led him would have resulted in a big hit. IDK: I see Adams getting attention and MVS as well.

Baltimore only has Andrews, Hollywood Brown, and Huntley's legs as weapons, and Duverney is far more name than NFL production (averaging 18 yds/gm for in both his first two years). They did a great job on Brown and Duvernay, whether that was scheme or just quality work by the boundary CBs. GB played a decent number of DL but quantity did not yield the quality or outcome desired. ILB usage was substantial but no spies. One thing Capers could do: he took advantage of teams who had a QB who can't throw.

STs were awful again. I see no benefit to keeping Drayton even if they have no viable internal candidate to promote, which in itself suggests a problem from the get-go. Bring someone in from the outside. Stop using Amari was one easy fix that Drayton refused until presumably forced to do so.

We disagree more than usual. That happens.

Here is one throw to MVS that apparently even Rodgers is proud of. Looks like throwing a receiver open. Hope folks don't expect that out of Love for a couple of years, anyway.

Thank you for this breakdown. We played a lot of double TE packages for a team that only had 20 handoffs. The TE unit lost their best receiver when Tonyan got hurt, and with Lewis being old and all, we need to add a TE this offseason.

You’ve got to stop with this “special teams are horrible “ hyperbole because it’s confusing people. We made every FG, every extra point , did not turn the ball over, did not allow any returns for a TD. and successfully recovered an onside kick to seal the win, They weren’t perfect but neither was the offense or defense.

Eventually, people will realize that different coaches and different players doesn’t change the basic nature of special teams, and that if you can just keep them from costing you a win you’re ahead of the curve.

It's the mental mistakes that seem to be happening in the last month that's driving most of us nuts... (But this is an organizational issue that Gute has to deal with)

TGR, Lowry batted away one pass attempt at the very beginning of the game. Give man credit when he deserve it!

Croat: none of the official stats give Lowry credit for a pass defensed. I don't remember Lowry doing it either.

Well that is why I do not look at the PFF numbers. They are not so precise. I remember he was also waving his index finger as no way it will pas.

I believe it was on the first Ravens series, but it may be second one as well. I'll check and give you info.

Edit: You are correct, Croat. The NFL official stats show a pass defensed for Lowry. Not sure if I missed it initially or if the NFL updated their data. Also, Andy Herman mentioned Lowry's batted pass in the podcast with Aaron.

So, this is an official correction!

What was wrong with the defense? I say the DL. The packers need Clark. Seems that wrestling back ground, helps you collapse a pocket. Daniels had it . Even Arron Donald has it. And while Gutey backs guys who don't get hurt. There just seems to be more needed along that DL. Wolf had Santana Dotson. And even the great Reggie White like to wrestle. I just like the way Douglas plays. He reminds me of Micheal Hyde. So I'm all for a switch to safety, down the road. Look at all those tackles Sunday. Still, Can't wait to get Alexander back. Campbell. brings it. The guy just knows how to use the sidelines. Why were they going to cut Patrick? The guy is doing a nice job at center. Finding the right pieces. The special Teams still need help. Sullivan scares me.

Your so right about Clark. This game really showed the importance he is to the Packers. It wasn’t pretty but a win is a win. We need Dallas to lose one game and Packers can go 2-1 and get the number 1 seed. Of course, it would be preferable to go 3-0. The other thought is if Dallas losing one of the next two we can than rest our players against Detroit.

Lowery , Lancaster and Keke were getting blown back which prevented Campbell from being free to cover Huntley more , the loss of Clark was huge, Slaton actually held his ground .

Douglas is clearly a better CB than King, but I was surprised to see that King had fallen behind Sullivan in the CB rotation. King is fragile but usually okay when healthy.

Boy does this D-line miss Kenny Clark. I hope Clark recovers quickly as this D-line is below average without him. It would be nice to see the Packers draft some help for him next year.

King was on ST. That limited his snaps on defense. As a rule it takes Linemen (both OL-DL) three years to mature in whatever system a team runs. Despite this game, the Packers D line has been good. (Defense got out schemed early on and Barry never adjusted because of the undermanned secondary. It was a pick your poison for Barry. And to blunt, he and the defense by committee got out coached. This is the second time in a row. That is cause for concern...)

I was at the game, so I haven't watched the TV replay yet. Both TGR post, and Coldworld's comment is fairly accurate overview of the game. (At least from where I was sitting) Couple of comments: Rodgers made some insane throws at angles that had to seen to be believed. In general, he was on time and quick on his release. Both Adams and MVS had bracket coverage for most of the game. The Ravens had a OLB sliding down the LOS to take the shallow cross away for most of the game. MVS beat double coverage all game long. Rodgers threw to a spot on the field in three of MVS catches. Shows how much Rodgers now trusts MVS. The Ravens also slid a Safety over when they were in cover 1 to put three(yes) three DB on him. No accident that TE (Lewis) had 40 plus in three catches. Just goes to show how important MVS is in Lafleur offense. (MVS quickness and raw speed has to be seen live to understand how much he stresses defenses. TV makes the game seem flat. The vertical nature of the game does not translate well) Both Lafleur and Barry and their staffs got out coached again. Raven's used the Bear's game plan to great effect. (Just how bad are the Bears coaching staff) In the offense, I saw Rodgers drawing up plays in the huddle, to adjust to the Raven's secondary and DL stunting. (MLF expression during that with the call sheet was priceless) I will only add in Barry's defense that most of the adjustments were to keep the ball in front. The Packers conceded the 5-10 yards to prevent the long throw. The lack of discipline within the D-line and OLB was striking. As a unit, this is the first time I have seen a breakdown with the front 7 all year. By the middle of the fourth quarter, that was one frustrated bunch. Neither coach has shown the ability to make in game adjustments. Either Lafleur learns, or lets his OC do it. (Of course since Rodgers is the Packer's defacto OC in game for this year, I guess it doesn't matter) Barry I'm sorry to say is outmatched. This is where the loss of Mike Pettine shows up. The question is who on the defense talks to Barry about in game adjustments, we have seen this defense do that against the Cardinals and the Rams. I can only conclude that injuries have taken a good portion of that part of the game away from Barry and the coaches. Special Teams... (sigh) The mental mistakes have got to stop. Period. Well, both kickers were good. At this point of the season, it is survive and advance. And for all the flaws the Packers did that. On to the Browns...

Let me add in the Packers defense that they are playing the Browns Saturday. That makes it a short week, so both staffs had to double up on their game plans and be aware of load limits on their skill players. My main concern is the Packer's defense. That is a pretty thin group now across the board. (Both P. Smith and Gary were running on fumes at the end of the Raven's game...)

Yes, this is much closer to what I saw. I implicitly criticized Lazard because I thought Adams and MVS seemed to be drawing a lot of attention, but that's hard to see on the television. TEs got 78 receiving yards: it is nice to get production out of the TEs and all, but it would also be nice if Lazard and Winfree could do squat. Still think AR threw some highly accurate fastballs into tight windows for MVS. I give credit to MVS for catching those passes and remember him stretching to get into the end zone on the TD pass.

We did score 31, so I am not as critical of the offensive game plan as you. Not sure if AR was changing the plays, but it is possible. Not Barry's finest hour (nor last week either). Baltimore's OL is not good. Limited weapons though those are good. They did get nice field position.

Lazard seemed to be active in the first half particularly. If I recall he got creamed at one point, I’m not sure if that was a factor thereafter. If it was, it might have contributed to the more varied use of MVS later (which is overdue).

Winfree had one pass thrown to him, appeared to be in the right place, about a yard over the down line and Rodgers threw it 2 yards behind that. A head scratcher I think has to be on Rodgers.

With Rodgers not practicing, it’s hard to see how any receiver not part of the team earlier has a chance to get on the same page with Rodgers. None played with him in preseason either.

Habugh? had his team ready for what the Packers were doing from the first snap. The Ravens were undermanned in the secondary, so they jammed every chance they got. The game Refs let a lot go on both sides of the ball. The TV cast game story did not match up with the game action itself. The less said about Troy and Buck the better. Lazard had a spy on him early on, it was clear the Ravens did not want him getting off the LOS clean. Also, it looked like he was playing the move TE in some of their two TE formations. In general MLF did not push the running game, with the Ravens secondary so beat up. Second half the Ravens defense were running a completely different scheme that the Packers were not prepared for. The TV cast only had a brief shot of Rodgers in the huddle, but he was calling the game by the early middle part of the third quarter. (And yes he was calling the route packages and protections pre snap, and in one case he drew up the routes he wanted Jones, MVS, Lazard and Adams in huddle. Shades of Dallas in 2016) Give the Ravens credit for exposing the soft spot in the Green Bay defensive scheme. Huntley never made a mistake and always took the sure 5-7 yards if his WR and TE were covered. The 2 point throw was a no choice on his part, he knew Savage had mirrored the route but everyone else was covered or was forced out of bounds. TV did not show how vicious the hand fighting was in the endzone. While I have been tough on Barry, I thought his hand was forced by the lack of OLB in the scheme to rest both Smith and Gary. The Ravens exploited the weakness to great effect. If anything this game showed why the Packers gave Clarke such a huge contract. The Packers had no replacement for him to press and contain. Oh, there was some fighting in the stands between a couple of drunk Raven fans and Green Bay fans. I guess they didn't like that the Packer fans filled up close to half the stadium. (Don't ask me about ST. I get banned from CHTV for life... :-)

Interesting. Yes, there was a shot of what looked like AR in the huddle drawing up a play he wanted to run.

I gave Harbaugh considerable praise in some comments even though I don't think his decisions were sound on going to two and going for it on 4th down. His teams seem well-disciplined.

Lazard being a de facto TE is tough (at least for me!) to pick up on TV. So that is interesting.

@Coldworld - still not a big fan of Lazard in terms of paying him next year. Still not willing to put a 2nd round, $4M+ tag on him.
