Packers Select Quay Walker, Linebacker in 2022 NFL Draft - Round 1

Quay Walker is the surprising first pick for the Packers at 22.

Quay Walker, ILB, Georgia

MEASURABLES/PRO DAY:

6-foot-4, 241 pounds; 4.52 40-yard dash; 32-inch vertical jump; 122-inch broad jump; 6.89 3-cone drill.

CAREER NOTES:

He was rated the No. 2 linebacker prospect and top-35 overall recruit nationally out of Crisp County High School. He played in all 14 games as a reserve in 2018 (six tackles), sharing the team's Special Teams Newcomer of the Year Award. Walker got more playing time as a sophomore (23 tackles, 3.5 for loss with 2.5 sacks in 13 appearances) before getting a chance to start twice in 10 contests in 2020 (43 tackles, two for loss with one sack).

NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

Walker is an uber athletic and rangy linebacker. His impact is felt in the run game, in coverage, and pressuring the quarterback. Prior to 2021, Walker did not start a game until the 2020 season. His lack of starting experience leaves his FBI and processing ability open for growth.

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Walker will be paired alongside All-Pro inside linebacker De'Vondre Campbell to make things more difficult for opposing offenses. He is rangy and like defensive coordinator Joe Barry's modus operandi, he is very versatile. He lined up on the line, off the ball and against the tight as he made 67 tackles and only missed three for a Georgia defense that was hailed as one of the best ever. This pick looks like the perfect defensive player for the Deebo Samuel-type offensive player that can do it all.

COMMENTARY:
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst continues to surprise. When we all think that he is going to take a wide receiver with the first pick, he zags and takes an inside linebacker. With six wideouts taken in the first 18 picks, many of the top pass catchers were already off the board. Chris Olave, the smooth route runner from Ohio State who I tabbed Green Bay taking, was gone at No. 11 to New Orleans. Gutekunst didn't reach for this pick but it is still a surprise. Especially because edge rusher Jermaine Johnson was still on the board. Remember when the inside linebacker was an afterthought at 1265 Lombardi Ave.? Not anymore. The Packers now have two dynamic inside linebackers that can go sideline to sideline.

I GUARANTEE you, the Packers will be better than every single one of the teams who either drafted a receiver in the first round or traded for one. None of those teams actually got better. They just got flashier. Packers will win games the right way- by being a tough, hardnosed, physical, football team that beats its opponents into submission. Ive been saying it for 3 years now that Gutekunst is building a bully and these 2 picks only further solidify that thought. Watch them draft 2 or 3 olinemen before this draft is over too.

Pretty much agree.
Drake London - ATl. London buried on my board + ATL stinks.
Garrett Wilson - NYJ: Jets are bad. Wilson probably improves them.
Olave - NO: Yeah, New Orleans got better.
jameson - DET. Still have Goff, Won't have Jameson. Maybe in 2023.
Jahan Dotson - WAS. Might be better until Dotson gets hit. Not on my board.
Burks - TN. Burks buried on my board. Next Alshon jeffrey? No thanks.

Did the Jets or Saints get better? Maybe a little bit? But none of the teams on that list are making playoffs. They all had much bigger holes to fill and they used their precious draft capital on a dime a dozen position that will make little to no difference in whether they win games or not. I think some NFL GM's panicked with all the monster receiver contracts being dished out so they all rushed to draft the cheap replacement.

Do most “surprises” emanate from smart people or from stupid people?

Gutey seems to create lots of costly surprises.

"I distrust Gutey. He is in over his head."

Why? The guy inherited a 6-10 team about 90 days before his first NFL draft. By year 2 the Packers improved to 13-3. You DON'T improve to 13-3 by year 2 with a GM who is over his head.

This team is LOADED with very few weaknesses. This Defense is going to kick the shit out of opposing offenses. Teams will have a hard time passing and certainly running the ball now.

Perhaps we should wait a few more picks and/or perhaps a trade or two before suggesting Gute is stupid.

I wonder how much that has to do with the defensive coordinators? Pettine certainly never valued the position, nor the DC's before him. Barry seems to really like inside linebackers both when he was with the Rams and last year with Campbell. Seems to be a major change in philosophy.

Pete Dougherty called Quay Walker as the pick 45 minutes before it was made. Noted the formidable pairing with Campbell.

Said Joe Barry wanted to run more nickel & dime, and referenced the great LB pairings of the old San Francisco pair of Bowman & Willis, along with the Tampa Bay pairing of LBs Shelton Quayles & Derrick Brooks.

Adding Devonte Wyatt in front to keep them clean with Kenny Clark?

CHEF’S KISS.

I’m ecstatic with today’s R1 picks.

RUN STOP! It was arguably a bigger need on this team than WR. Packers gave up > 60% conversions on 3rd & short 2021. They’ve had the 24th ranked DL or worse for the last 5 years.

Not going to win anything that way.

Exactly. The Packers have been soft up the middle for a while now. I think Wyatt adds more juice to the passing game than the running game, but either way he is 310 lbs. of production. Walker could line up anywhere and will make this D better. Good first day. I don't know who they are targeting for WR now but Tolbert and Pierce will likely be around at the bottom of the second, and they may pan out as well as anyone who went in the first.

Because in today's game they run nickel most of the time which usually leads to them replacing the 2nd linebacker with a safety. this makes them light against the run which leads to them getting gashed in the run game. Now they can stay stout against the run without giving up much, if any, athleticism to stop the pass. Walker is a chess piece.

Quay is exactly who they wanted and they made sure to get him. Gute's guy, Barry's too. He can defend the Deebo Samuel type runner/receiver. He covers tight ends which we needed. Good run defender. Extremely high ceiling. Ideal compliment to Campbell. Awesome pick (just like AJ Dillon was not the reach we all thought he was).

CW.....I agree this pick was with a lot of discussion with Barry. I definitely thought they would go safety, so I was surprised. I don't have a problem with the pick because his 3-cone and speed were fantastic with a 6'4 and long arm frame. High upside.

It seems to me less an issue of his value to the team as Barry and the scouts must have liked what they saw on film but I am rather sure he would have been around for the 28th pick. They just missed out on J Johnson at 26 . I imagine they will go safety with Hill or even Cine at 28 . I know they like a few WRs but Pickens and Watson are reaches at this point . But well they reached with Quay . Pickens looms as a choice. Evaluators will give them a C - for Quay alone or lower. Not that that means much . But are we all agnostics and no longer in Hute we trust?

Comment on Walker from Jersey Al's draft guide:

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:
If Green Bay is in need of an immediate contributing inside linebacker, Walker may not be the best fit for them. However, if they can afford to be patient Walker could be a playmaker on their defense a few years down the road. Even if he is not ready to contribute right away as a starter, Walker could see the field early as a dime linebacker in passing situations. Having an athletic linebacker that can hold up in coverage is something they have been missing for years.

Not what I was expecting for our first pick at all. Thanks, Since '61

40 times mean nothing. This isnt madden. Cooper Kupp, the current reigning super bowl mvp and receiving triple crown winner, ran a 4.62. People said he was too slow. Davante Adams fell to the 2nd round cuz he only ran a 4.56. People said he was too slow. Michael Thomas ran a 4.57 and put up some of the best receiving seasons of all time. Fell to the 2nd round. People said he was too slow. Deandre Hopkins fell to the late first round cuz he ran a 4.56. People said he was too slow. Keenan Allen ran a 4.71 and fell to the 2nd round. People said he was too slow. Its even been said Jerry Rice ran a 4.70. Do i really have to keep going? Inversely, i can provide a really long list of underwear olympics gold medalists who are now selling used cars cuz they never learned the intricacies and finer details of running routes at the professional level. Give me the guys who are masters of their craft. I dont care what their 40 times are cuz those guys will get open regularly. David Bell is an advanced receiver who is on his way to becoming a master of his craft. Put him on a team like the Packers with a qb like Rodgers and he will become a superstar.

I admit I'm not a fan of David Bell. But that's isn't the big reason i wrote that: I like 10 WRs as much as I like Bell. I like Pickens, Watson, Pierce, Tolbert, Doubs, Moore, Thornton, Shakir, maybe Robinson, Velus, and Gray, just as much or more.

I suppose there could be a second run on WRs on day two, but i really don't think there will be a need to trade up.

If they can get a receiver they like at 53 or 59, even better. But i expect there to be another run on receivers at the top of the 2nd round. Then again, that would push a bunch of good olinemen and edge players further down the board which i would also be happy with.

I don't disagree, Sanity, I knew about all those receivers slow 40s, but the problem is Kupp, Adams, Thomas, Hopkins... Jerry Rice... you're talking about outliers, guys with incredible talent. If you believe that Bell is in that league, wonderful. Let's draft him. Odds are against it though. There are probably a dozen receivers still on Gute's board. We have to just hope he hits on the right one or two and signs them to a contract.

Why do I mention a contract, Sanity? So I can bring in the Marx Brothers and the great contract routine which ends with Groucho saying that at the end of the contract there's a sanity clause, and Harpo saying, "You can't fool me, there ain't no Sanity Claus."

Christian Watkins had a 10+ % drop rate last season and that was an improvement. I doubt that gets better from FCS to the the NFL. Probably good we didn’t spend a first on him.

Wyatt was in the first round all day. Walter's are semi-smart and change the rankings every other hour. Giving up the third and 8 to Deebo in the Playoff Game reset the ILB depth chart. I would have snagged a guy in the third, but Walker can seek and destroy, neutralize the TEs and bring he blitz.

Also, dont underestimate the influence and effect Joe Barry will have on Walker. Look what he did for Devondre Campbell, a career average player and journeyman turned all-pro. Walker's upside is far greater than Campbell's ever was. Barry turned some other nobody into a pro bowler when he was the Rams linebacker coach too. Every linebacker he touches turns to gold. And Walker will likely be the most gifted linebacker hes ever coached.

He has size and speed and did quite well at the combine. He needs work but hey we was well schooled at Georgia. We can use him. A first round pick. a 22 pick, not sure. Apparently Gutt loved this guy for some reason versus passing on Christian Watson.
My take it was obvious the best receivers were toast by 22 so if your not spending captital to move up, its because you want those 11 picks to fill some needed holes.
Maybe they wont pass this year and just have your 50 mil a year qb had the ball off and we just run it? I mean you dont need a Rodgers to pass the ball to no one.

I admit I was fixated on Devin Lloyd, but Walker is bigger and faster and could probably play OLBer if we needed him to. I also admit to listening to the "experts" and now looking back, I can see why Gutey has Quay ranked ahead of Devin Lloyd. SEC Vs Pac 12, bigger, stronger, faster...

I'm also very happy about Wyatt. That makes 3 Dawgs on the team. I wonder if they asked Stokes about Walker and Wyatt? Sure, they probably did.

I am very excited to see this defense on the field next season.

I've seen a few people saying outside, but prototypical OLB / Edge in a 3-4 system is usually 6'5 ish (for the long levers) and 255-275 lbs because they have to take on NFL OTs.

It's possible, but I would think he'd need two years in the weight room, and the right frame to put on the muscle mass to be really effective as a stand-in OLB. Occasionally lining him up on the outside for an overload blitz? Sure, I can see that. Truly playing OLB? I think that's a project.

Well, I will not lie. I really dislike this pick. It screams R-E-A-C-H. Walker is probably a mid-second round value, so he should be able to play. Lots of 2nd rounders turn out well. So, he has talent. But there were lots of better options available. Not happy with ILBs who lack football IQ and instincts.

I have written that the fastest way to improve the team is to get Krys Barnes off the field. Wish granted, I guess. Be careful what you wish for. Not sure how fast they can get Walker on the field, either, as he needs time. So, not the best choice in terms of needing immediate contributions out of this draft.

If as a rookie Walker plays mostly on third downs and is able to help both with covering receivers and tackling runners, then he's an immediate contributor in a big way by helping the Packers defense get off the field.
Meanwhile, he is perhaps growing into a superstar who we have under contract for at least five seasons.
Hard to say, because of all the great defenders around him at Georgia that kept him somewhat hidden. We'll see.
However -- like with the drafting of Gary -- it seems what we have is not only a rare athlete with tremendous upside, but also a guy with the advantage of having played for a major college program for NFL preparation.
What do you think, TGR, maybe a better pick upon more reflection?

Very possible. I didn't mean to imply he was Kyri Thornton taken in the 3rd despite being unable to play. Walker is a legit 2nd rounder, in my opinion. They often play, and play well. Some bomb. See Jenkins, Dillon, Adams (WRs in 2nd) vs. Josh Jackson/Jones/Spriggs. Really, same for all rounds.

Very possible and even likely that Quay Walker makes the team better. 1st and 2nd rounders are supposed to do that, after all.

I will take a long look at him, perhaps Sunday. Busy and tired - I did fall asleep from exhaustion and woke up after GB made this pick.

Wow... I'm happy as a pig in shit. While I was fixated on Devin Lloyd for the last 3 months, Gutey was doing the work and noticed Quay was bigger and faster than Lloyd, and that he could easily play OLBer too if needed.

In fact, I'm mad at myself, because I looked at Quay and saw he was bigger and faster than Devin but still drank the cool aid of the media types who make the rankings.

I don't think this is a "REACH" at all. I think this is a GM and Scouts who know what they're doing and drafting a guy where he was great value.

Tgr - I loved Devin Lloyd, and I was surprised at the pick because like everyone else, I assumed Lloyd was the best ILBer in the draft when obviously our GM and scouting department liked Quay even more than Daniel Jeremiah's #9 overall prospect Jermaine Johnson.

Do me a favor tomorrow after you've had time to look and compare Quay Walker to Jermain Johnson.

Walker is 1" shorter, 13lbs lighter, but faster. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the reason they drafted him is because he can play ILBer and be our 3rd OLBer.

I am disappointed in myself for not seeing in Quay what Gutey and company obviously do.

Barnes just struggles in coverage. Particularly on RBs. Barnes is a special teamer now....
They are hoping Walker can be what they hoped Josh Jones could be in the middle of the field. To your point about reach. We see this every year with guys with elite traits...thet just NEVER fall....Quay Walker has an RAS of 9.66. He is in the top 50 athletically of all linebackers drafted since 1987....over 2000 of them...This puts him in the top 1/4 of 1% percentile athletically. These guys always go earlier than draftnicks suspect them too.

I predicted they take Travis Jones at 28...Happy with Wyatt..He won't have to stunt all the time like at Georgia. Get upfield big fella.

One of the fun things I've noticed is that Gutekunst works very hard not to roll his eyes when he's asked by press to discuss how the "dynamic" between he and Rodgers has "improved" since the start of last season.

It's pretty clear if you pay attention to body language, facial expression, and language cues that Gute isn't a fan of Rodgers' desire to be a part of decision making, and moreover, that Gute isn't consulting or informing Rodgers before making moves.

Last night, asked about the "improved communication" with Rodgers going into this draft, Gute was clearly (but subtly) suppressing annoyance, stated that he appreciates all "the input" from Rodgers (notice, he didn't say they collaborate, or that he talks to Rodgers about what moves he was thinking about making), while deliberately stating that when the scouting department 'gets into their process' during the draft, they're not worried about communicating with anyone, however Gute stated he's got a head coach on his side that's constantly texting, and who knows, maybe he's talking to QB1.

It was a statement by Gutekunst that while he's willing to listen to Rodgers share his opinion, and while their may be others that are concerned with stroking Rodgers' ego or placating him (LaFleur), he's the GM and he and his scouting department are working unfettered in the manner in which they are accustomed through the draft process.

I like the strategy unfortunately they didn’t even get the best linebacker on Georgia. Nacobe Dean paired with Wyatt would be beastly.
Mark it down in 10 years Dean will be in the league and Walker will be at the local Blimpys shining shoes.
They got it wrong again. This reaks of when they selected Beagle or whatever his name was over TJ Watt.

I, like most of you, was very surprised by this pick. Don't panic. PFF said Eric Stokes was a freakin' 4th rounder last year. What?

ILB just has not been a position the Packers have valued. When was the last time they spent a 1st rounder on one? 2006 with AJ Hawk? So nearly two decades ago....I wanted Eric Kendricks in 2015 as the safe, boring pick, instead Ted took Demarius Randall who was run out of the league years ago while Kendricks still mans the middle for the Vikings.

I've seen comps to Jamie Collins. If he pans out that well, then he's worth this pick. We have been horrific at covering TEs for years. Anyone remember how the Niners always torment us with George Kittle? Anyone remember the Ravens game where Mark Andrews went nuts with 10 catches for 136 yds and 2 TDs? He was completely unstoppable. I know these are elite TEs, but it's been embarassing how bad our defense has been against these guys. We at least have to hold them to something more pedestrian like 5 catches for 50 yds and no TDs.

From PFF: Walker is one of the best run-and-hit linebackers in the class. Give him the freedom to play fast, and he'll excel. That's because he's both a speedy 240 pounds and one of the best tacklers in the class, having missed only seven times on 138 career attempts.

Reading the comments here on Cheesehead TV it was perfectly clear that plenty of posters expected the Packers to pass on WR with the first and possibly both first round picks.

The WRs that fit the Packers X and Z receivers were in the second round (Pickens, Pierce, Watson).

Now it IS possible the Packers move up in round 2 to get one of the better remaining WRs, but it is absolutely clear Gute is committed to best available player in his highest remaining tier on their board.

Is the 7th best wide receiver at pick 22 the best player ? Gute didn't think so and I didn't expect a receiver at 22 either. It COULD have happened at pick 28, but there was (in the Packers eyes) better value at DT, a very good D lineman still there in a year where there were not that many good ones available.

I love both picks. I've wanted two good ILBs for years. Lombardi loved LBs. Nitschke, Robinson, Caffey. Great Packer teams always had great defenses. Gute is going back to that construction. Great corners?.. Jaire an all-pro, Douglas and Stokes solid. Safeties?... All-pro Amos and potential All-pro in Savage. Pass rushers?... Smith solid, Gary becoming a beast. LBs?... All-Pro Douglas and a Douglas clone in Walker.

The Packers will yet find a WR or two in the draft. Maybe trade for a vet, but Rodgers is that good that he makes average receivers good and great receivers great. Rodgers has had great receivers before; Jordy, Jennings, Driver, Jones, Cobb... three or four at a time, and still won only one SB. The D almost always let us down (although last year it was definitely the offense).

We'll find receivers. Harder to create a great defense. That's what I think Gute has done. I'm happy.

WRs - value depleted. check
no trade - check
strength of draft - defense. check
Q Walker - my last pre-draft prognostication on this site was this guy - look it up.
D Wyatt - pleasantly surprised he lasted till 28

Was very surprised J Johnson fell to mid 20s. Must have been a reason.

btw - pairing up Campbell and Green with mates should greatly benefit both pro-bowlers.

Will be very interesting to see how Gutey plays the board tonight. Will he go aggressive for WRs? Or will he continue to let draft come to him. Enough quality talent remaining that he can afford to sit back and wait. Even so, I expect at least one R2 Wr tonight. Maybe one in R3 as well. Heck, we could see 2 Wrs and a TE. ROT still very possible. Would be logical to focus on offense IFF the value is appropriate. Otherwise, keep going defense is OK by me.

Lot to look forward to this pre-season. Love and our spanking new defense. Plus 3 picks tonight!

How many years in a row have we needed an inside linebacker and we passed again and again. This year with the biggest needs at WR and OT and after resigning our all pro ILB we REACH and pick an ILB at 22 that we could have got at 53!!! WE didn't even draft the best ILB at 22!! If I read in GUTEY we trust one more time I will shoot myself. With 6 wide receivers gone the 22nd pick should have been Florida ST edge rusher who could have been a top 10 pick. I could have understood that even though I wanted a WR. I would have been ok with tradeing out of the 1st round with both picks because we could have gotten both of these guys in the 2nd round. Now we can look forward AGAIN to WASTING both of our 4th round picks to TRADE up in the 2nd round to pick players at POSITIONS OF NEED!!! Every other team understands how to move around in the draft except us. What a bad start to the draft. Now we can watch Chistian Watson,George Pickens and Jalen Tolbert go off the board ahead of us. Maybe we can pick the 25th best receiver or worse. At this point we would be better off offering 4th or 5th round picks to the Jets for Denzel Mims,to the Eagles for Jalen Reagor, or the Pats for NKeal Harry. Those would make more sense than throwing picks away to move up.

We picked ILB Ryan in 2015 (with a 4th), Martinez in 2016 (with a 4th), Josh Jones in round 2 in 2017 (a hybrid LB/SS) , Oren Burks (traded up in round 3) in 2018.

Lots of attempts to get a good ILB with a mid-round or higher pick and only Martinez was really a success (Ryan was pretty good but had marginal pace that suffered after a leg injury and he became too slow).

When the Packers finally found -the guy-, they had the sense to re-sign Campbell to a good deal and now they have reinforced that with a high pick to go alongside him. Quay Walker can cover over the middle.

The old weaknesses there, as exploited by (for example) the 49ers, like Deebo used as a RB or TE Kittle through the midfield, are there no longer.

With the addition of Wyatt to go with Kenny Clark the Packers look good at DL, OLB, ILB, S, CB. This is finally one solid defense at ALL levels,

PS @golfpacker1 What makes you think Quay Walker was a reach. He was a late riser, but a reach ? I direct you to Chris Simms comments on DTs and ILBs pre-draft, where he talks about both Walker and Wyatt. He has each of them at no.2 in their respective positions.

Quay Walker will be a force, with speed to cover TEs/RBs/WRs.

Walker is bigger and faster than Treylon Burks.

This kid is going to transform our defense in the middle with De'Vondre Campbell.

Hell, if we get desperate, we can put him as WR1!
