NFL SCOUTING REPORT:

Sorrell’s measurables and speed won’t be eye-catching, but he’s very consistent and plays with good technique. He can play up or down, but might be targeted as a 3-4 outside ‘backer due to a lack of length. He plays with adequate power at the point and can work around blocks and into the backfield. Sorrell’s rush lacks speed and power but he wins with his hands and has an above-average feel for creating entry points with positioning and body turn. He doesn’t have high-end traits, but he’s productive and reliable. Sorrell could become an average starter in time. -NFL.com

Sorrell brings a lunch-pail mentality to the defensive front, offering immediate value as an early-down run defender with the technical foundation to develop as a pass rusher. His powerful hands, block deconstruction skills, and natural leverage make him a reliable edge-setter who consistently maintains gap integrity against the run. What he lacks in bend and explosiveness, he compensates for with relentless motor and shrewd understanding of angles and leverage points. -NFL Draft Buzz

Barryn Sorrell enters the NFL draft as one of the best edge rushers in the 2025 class. He capped off his career at Texas with his most productive season in terms of sacks and tackles, recording 6 sacks and 44 tackles on the year. Sorrell is a strong and explosive edge rusher who wins by utilizing power and a relentless motor. At Texas, Sorrell also showcased his versatility, serving in several different roles for the Longhorn defense. He is a naturally disruptive pass rusher who works through the whistle on every rep and will bring the right mentality to an NFL defense. -The Draft Network

CAREER NOTES:

All SEC Second Team (2024) • All-Big 12 Honorable Mention (2023, 2022).

  • 2021: Played in 6 games as a reserve (7 tackles, TFL).
  • 2022: Honorable Mention All-Big 12 Conference. Led team with 5.5 sacks. Played in all 13 games with 10 starts (44 tackles, 9 TFLs, PBU, FF).
  • 2023: Honorable Mention All-Big 12. Started all 14 games (37 tackles, 4.5 TFLs with 4 sacks).
  • 2024: Started all 16 games (44 tackles, 11 TFLs with 6 sacks, PBU).

FIT WITH THE PACKERS:

Sorrell is a ready-made run defender. He's stout at the point of attack and showcased a knack for making plays behind the line of scrimmage. With his athleticism and relentlessness, he could carve out a role in Green Bay's defensive end rotation as a rookie.

"This is a guy who comes in and competes with anyone and at anytime," CJ Vogel, a reporter for On Texas Football said. "Looking no further than getting on the field as a freshman at Texas and receiving defensive line MVP accolades in a stacked room while at the Senior Bowl in Mobile this winter. He gives it his all and plays with a huge chip on his shoulder."

The former Longhorn plays with an attacking mindset and a relentless motor. Couple those things with his athleticism, and he has the makings of a solid rotational edge rusher. Getting that type of player in the fourth or fifth round would be tremendous value for a team thirsty for help at defensive end.
-Packers Wire

COMMENTARY:

The Packers drafted a true workhorse who runs with determination and grit off the edge. Sorrell's lateral quickness and ability to move swiftly around blockers will compliment the already stout run defense in Green Bay. Over the past 3 season, he has recorded 66 run stops and jumps out as menace tackler in the backfield.

Sorrell joins Rashan Gary, Lukas Van Ness, Kingsley Enagbare, and Brenton Cox Jr adding depth to the Packers roster of edge rushers. It will be exciting to seem him flourish in DC Jeff Hafley's scheme as Sorrell's addition will enhance and elevate Green Bay's defense.

Very smart and excellent value.
I Like him!
Much better choice than Elijah Roberts.

The typical athletic player the Packers like... High effort and not bad in pass coverage... Run defense is a problem... Susceptible to struggling with double teams... Like LVN, will need to learn some counter rush moves.

I would have loved an athletic DT with upside... He doesn't seem to offer much more than our current stable of edge

At the end of the 4th and beyond it becomes a hope and a prayer on getting a player who will start for you someday. But, this is where Gutey has made his living.

So he is basically going to compete with Cox, Enagbare, Mosby for the 3rd rotational Edge. Ok, no problem. God's speed to him. Best man wins. Still hoping new DL coach brings more from Gary and especially LVN. That's critical.

Believe it or not, the depth chart is showing Enagbare as the starter at RDE, so he's competing with Cox, Mosby and LVN.

Gary, VanNess, and Enagbare are all secure. He's competing with Mosby and Cox for a spot on the gameday squad.

Enagbare plays a ton of snaps for us and is one of our leading pressure guys. It's unlikely a Day 3 rookie supplants him by opening day. And of course, he makes better than $3M this year, so if you aren't going to play him, why keep him?

I wouldn't call Enagbare secure. In fact, I think Cox has the ability to supplant him. What they pay him is irrelevant if he doesn't beat the competition. I think at best 4th rotational, but they will still need a 4th rotational.

Enagbare is on the hot seat, imo. Cox is an ERFA and cheap, plus his stats in just 160 snaps rival Enagbare in over 500 snaps. Cox was okay against the run but we need to see how he does with a lot of snaps. Plus, Enagbare is making $3.46M, none guaranteed. And is Oliver a DE as well? If so, then Mosby better have his agent working hard.

Why would GB pay Enagbare $3.46M to watch LVN, Cox and Gary play all the snaps?

I agree. If Cox can stay close to the level of production he hit for those games at the end of the season, no team would release him.

Enagbare perhaps had the most difficult transition to the new scheme as a penetrator. He is in the last year of his contract. They are not likely to give up on LVN, so Enagbare is likely going to feel the heat if Cox doesn’t fall off the map. Cox and Enagbare’s run game was rated pretty equally according to the ratings I can find. Enagbare had one more sack over more than 3 times the rushing snaps.

If you only read the draft network you’d think he was 1st or 2nd round draft pick…..Good to see DL taken.

What I like from the limited video I’ve watched is that he tends to take good angles to the action. This suggests good anticipation and vision for how the play will unfold.

Maybe this kid can shame Gary and Van Ness into giving 100% effort on every play.

Effort has never been the issue with Gary or Van Ness. Let’s see how they do in year two of the new D and coaching.

West…..I also think part of the issue of not enough sacks is the scheme Hafley chose to employ. He really focused this team in stopping the run and that they did.

I don't agree Gary or Van Ness are coasters. What is the evidence to suggest that?

It's the lazy analysis of a fan that reads stat sheets but doesn't watch the player play on the field.

There is none. LVN and Gary both have excellent motors. LVN gets all of his pressures just because he has an excellent motor.

Seems very similar to Enagbare with slightly more athletic ability.

I picked Mbow here.

Yup. They'll be replacing the expiring Enagbare...with Enagbare 2.0.

They definitely have a "type".

Mbow fell 3 rounds, more of less. GB wanted to get bigger and he isn't that guy. Still, might have been wise to make an exception.

The attached video did a good job highlighting his strong hands and he plays relentlessly with balance to the whistle. Strong too with decent explosion at the snap.

20% of his tackles were TFLs...that's is a testament to his determination, athleticism, and motor. He needs to finish better and NFL coaching should help with that.

I am interested to see what he does in camp. More interested in what Cox, Jr. does. He's on the cusp.

No DT...instead a LB. Collin Oliver. Big and fast and tackler from Oklahoma State.

I really like this pick. Watching his highlights, what stuck out to me was how often he was double and even triple teamed and he STILL made a play. Also seems like a standup guy who is going to fit in great with the locker room.
