Packers Roster Cuts Tracker for the 2024 NFL Season

Ongoing updates on today's Packers roster cuts. Check back for more additions to the list as they are made public.

Today is the fateful day that Brian "The Turk" Gutekunst derails the near-term NFL dreams of a group of hopefuls. Also, a reminder that today will end in an initial 53-man roster. Guys who make it today could easily be unemployed the next day or two after others become available on waivers.

This time around, things got started in an interesting manner. While not a roster cut, the Packers added a player, trading a 2025 seventh round pick to Tennessee for QB Malik Willis. While there would expect to be multiple temporarily unemployed quarterbacks available via waiver wire tomorrow, Gutekunst wanted to make sure he didn't leave things to chance. He went out and got the player he wanted and who he likely sees as an improvement at QB2 over what they currently have.

Culled from a variety of sources, here are the Packers players that have not made the team:

  1. WR Samori Toure, per Adam Schefter
  2. OT Caleb Jones, per Matt Schneidman

If we go with Joseph then the farce is complete. A career below average kicker who was below average again in camp and missed more points than Carlson.

Maybe they are cutting both? That would make more sense then locking in Joseph’s contract.

True. As questionable as Carlson was, we would have lost more points with Joseph last season and through the summer. I can not see that being a rational way ahead. It may be that they keep Joseph till they can look at what’s available/see if they won a claim, but why him not Carlson I have no understanding of.

This is what I said the other day. They can always bring Joseph, Carlson, or anyone else who's available back after the cutdown and then use more IR/recall slots after the 53 is established. There's some roster shenanigans going on here.

I think that, right now, our K is not on the roster. I think Gute will hit the waiver wire for a K who was cut from another team. They are hanging onto Joseph, in case no other K becomes available, IMO.

Maybe Gutey told Bisaccia "enough with the "family ties", Rich. Time for the "facts of life". Your protege is not yet an NFL kicker. You had a shot. But we are not going to take any more time find out here."

Then I consider what advantage does Joseph bring to the team over some other average/below average kicker who is cut today or has been sitting by the phone all camp? Knowledge of the play book?

Maybe go back to fishing in the Titans pond ? It seems like 40 year old Nick Folk has won the Job over Iowa State rookie Narveson...who was only 18/23 as a Cyclone but had a solid camp and demonstrated a strong leg.

I expect GB thinks Carlson will still be available, and no great loss if he isn't. Gutey clearing out roster spots to be able to move immediately on anyone who becomes open who he already considers a potential upgrade at the two biggest areas of need, K and backup QB. Same with Clifford and Pratt.

Those who predicted a wild ride are proven right, but this gives basically no indication of the 53 come week 1.

Kickers in camp and preseason don't just compete with the kickers in their camp but all the kickers in the league that might be getting cut. It isn't an either or situation here. Heck we just saw the Packers go shopping elsewhere for a back up QB.

I'm guessing the Packers already have a good idea who will be available on waivers or have their list of free agents ready to go. It is puzzling why Carlson is being cut instead of Joseph though. That's why we're fans - just guessing.

Report last night regarding the Swing Tackle and Dillard:
"Apparently, the Packers haven’t been very impressed. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the “feeling internally” is that Green Bay’s first tackle off of the bench for the regular season isn’t on the team’s current roster. That’s a pretty crushing blow to Dillard, Caleb Jones and Kadeem Telfort, who have been competing for the position. On top of that, the Packers spent a draft pick on sixth-round pick Travis Glover in April, which might lead to him making the 53-man roster as a “redshirt” player."

Dillard appears to not be able to swing. He’s left T or horrible, even by his standards versus vanilla Ds. Jones has gone, which looked likely if hard to see why. I don’t have faith in Telfort or Tenuta as Ts. At G, maybe, but deep depth seemingly.

Could there be something in the visit from Billy Turner recently? He was poor last year. PFF had him at a 50 grade on 208 snaps. If that’s an upgrade, we better hope it’s one we never need.

Saw that RB Lloyd will be put on IR. Don’t know status of Dillon. NFL insiders believe rb Dameon Pierce (Texans) could be had for a late round draft pick. He ran for nearly 1000 yards as a rookie in 2022 and can block and catch, but doesn’t fit the scheme the Texans switched to last season. I think I’d rather have him than Wilson or Dillon if price was cheap.

A little obfuscation while trying to stash a guy like Lloyd is fine. We did it with St. Brown a few years ago. A vague, plausible injury, perhaps true to some extent, but it allows them to put them on IR instead of exposing them to waivers.

Seibert has a career average below Joseph’s over a similar number of seasons and has rarely kicked over 50 yards. A below average kicker with a weaker leg. Why would we trade for him or see him as an upgrade?

From perspective of typical Joe - Carlson had to be cut because of misses in crucial time and XPs.
From perspective of fans who look at stats - Carlson was an average rookie kicker and it would be good to test him longer.

I felt good with keeping him year longer especially after the summer of competition. Also remember that 1. he was drafted 2. he had big shoes of still ready to play Mason to fill. Now I am surprised but I trust coaches that they have already verified what they wanted. Too bad, I hoped we had a copy of Daniel. All in all it's kind of admittng to a mistake.

So now what?

I am going to guess it something more mechanical that he wasn't able to correct. If he was still having the same issues as last year and he didn't correct anything in the off season well that is when the NFL really means Not For Long. Coaches will work with you if you have raw talent and are improving. The GM wants you to succeed so he looks smart and any coach who went to bat for him is in the same boat.

You don't have long as a Kicker to correct things. The field of competition is too great. Only 32 are kept on rosters which can only be said for long snapper and punter but the kicker scores points in critical times. I have never heard of a kicker failing the shadows of another kicker, even the best don't cast a shadow like that.

Don't think that any of today's cuts mean they're done in GB. Gutey could be just clearing roster spots to be able to act immediately on anyone who becomes available who he sees as an upgrade, at any position. Anyone cut today who isn't claimed elsewhere can be re-signed.

The churn is real, and Gutey has shown that never stops in GB.

Carlson's eviction is a good thing. Big leg doesn't always mean big accuracy.

Toure was a disappointment. I saw him play for Nebraska and he was a beast at the college level. Didn't translate to the pros.

Jones, like Toure, had plenty of time to be a player. This is especially true since the Packers are looking for a swing tackle.

The Packers are not sitting pat and this is a good thing.

I never saw the big leg with Carlson. The only thing I saw with him was a look on his face that he was going to miss. Crosby had the same look at times.

Yes, Toure was a disappointment, especially with the several reports of the impressive catches he made during practices. Just goes to show practice doesn't always translate to actual game play. Anyone that has ever coached a sport at any level is familiar with that situation.

I certainly saw Carlson's big leg! Last year at TC the ball FLEW off his foot like a scalded dog, I seriously think he could have sent it 150 yards if that was his objective. After TC and before week 1 they messed with his mechanics again, having him slow down his kicking motion, trying to gain accuracy at the expense of power. It even worked! Until it didn't.

Will he ever combine the improved accuracy he had early last season with his natural kicking motion? More importantly, will he ever recover from the lopsided limp that threw him off while injured? It's possible that the answer to both is no. It's also possible that he gets re-signed in GB, and does great.

This wild ride is interesting to watch, but I don't think it tells us much about the 53 on week 1. And even that isn't final ...

Have 11 days before the kickoff and that is plenty of time to comb over the waivers and bring in the a couple of kickers to tryout. I am wondering if they don't look at OL as well. This group falls off after the starters and I think we will see lots of shuffling when the injuries hit the group (injuries in the NFL are a when not an if). I have a feeling the offense might need the D to step up in the early part of the season.

Disappointed with the Anders Carlson news. I believed that Carlson's upside was much higher than Joseph's.

Having said that, neither kicker had given me much confidence in their skills. Great kickers kick the ball through the MIDDLE of the uprights, not towards the left or the right goalpost. Find us a kicker that kicks down the MIDDLE of the uprights, then we will have something we can work with.

Joseph beat Carlson on technique. Carlson’s kicks aren’t consistently the same. Regardless of whether his FGAs are good or not, Carlson’s frequently moved left or right. Joseph’s FGAs frequently went through the goalposts with little movement left or right.

My concern with Joseph is his ability to kick in cold weather.

I think Carlson had the edge until Saturday's game. Both made long FG's but Carlson's was just inside the upright and barely cleared the crossbar. Joseph's was a yard longer, right down the middle with room to spare. Then there were the 2 short FG's. No sense in elaborating on those.

No.

JL10 missed his first pass of that game, a layup to AJ33. He obviously also missed his last pass. There were a zillion ways the whole team could have done better, they just got beat. The missed FG attempt could have sent it into OT, that's all. The blocked punt was bigger, since SF scored 7 off that.

Zach Tom going out injured was probably the biggest difference, but it's amazing that they were in it until the final two minutes, and actually ahead most of the game!

It isn't proven that GB has an upgrade over Anders Carlson, nor that he won't be back. I doubt Gutey has any idea what he'll do, but I expect he knows EXACTLY who he'd move on immediately if they become available...

I agree that timing is important.

By the time the hypothetical 5th quarter might have arrived, GB was toast. Whether that was because our guys were exhausted, (my first impression) or because Zach Tom was out injured, (which I didn't realize at the time but now seems like the biggest factor) I do not know.

Of course I would have loved to have seen it go into OT, GB wins, makes it into the SB ... I look at BF#4's SB win and see something similar; the team came "this close," hit the off-season with a vengeance, and never let up til the Lombardi returned to Titletown. Where it belongs!

The only issue I have with Gutey's constant churn is the possibility of upsetting that chemistry. At the same time, #25 was the hungriest player on the team last year, and his connection to Josh Jacobs goes back a ways. If the two of them only amplify each other's intensity, and it catches on throughout the whole locker room? Obviously Denver gave us no indication of that, but then they beat the Ravens; both in joint practice and in the inconsequential game.

I have only one response to how the roster looks now:

GPG!!

Disappointed to see Big Caleb not make the cut. But, hopefully he will continue to develop on the practice squad. His day will come. I feel the same with Toure. On the bright side I feel good that Gute made the trade for Malik Willis getting a new new backup QB. The ugly news is that both Dillon and Lloyd are going to IR. Damn! I really had high hopes for Lloyd. I think in general the Packers have had a great off season. Now the only thing to worry about is the the Philadelphia Eagles. That game will answer a lot of questions.

Since we need O line depth more than WR depth, and I saw Toure descend to WR8 before any of the other additions, I am more hopeful that Mt Caleb might clear waivers and return in some capacity. Although some team may very well claim him?

Interesting times ...

I saw Toure getting cut.

Not sure if Joseph will be the kicker but the only thing I see with going with him over Carlson is that they feel he is more dependable being a veteran and maybe they see Carlson as not getting any better.

Al, the trade for quarterback Malik Willis is an interesting one. He strikes me as being quite similar to Michael Pratt overall. He was a 3rd round draft pick a couple of years back, but failed to win the backup QB job with his team this year, losing out on the job to Mason Rudolph with the Titans.

I did a little research on Willis and managed to find out that he did score a 32 on the Wonderlic Intelligence score which is high with the average score being 24 among NFL quarterbacks. In my mind, I think his higher intelligence may very well help him, especially in this way...he should be able to learn the playbook of the Packers more quickly than the average quarterback. Of course that doesn't mean he will wind up being a starting quarterback in the league by any means, but it's at least a somewhat positive thing that helps set him apart from the average.

I scored 50 out of 50 on the Wonderlic and I assure you I'm not a candidate to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

It did get me a wide berth in the government job that I was applying for...

Yeah, the Wonderlic test, great indicator of football talent. The Willis trade was a lateral move at best. I would've kept one of the two QB's as well as the draft pick. They could've picked Willis off the pile

The only known player to get a perfect 50/50 score on the Wonderlic test in NFL HISTORY came from Harvard -- Pat McInally (punter). Note: this is not just people who played in the NFL, but college football players that took the Wonderlic but never made it on a team. So...you got a 50? Hmmmmm....

Given by a psychologist after a standardized test that provided entry to the regional park system where I was a curator/archivist of historical collections. And yes, 50 out of 50. It's not all that hard of a test. You need to be quick though.

I'm still not a pro quarterback prospect.

Bitternotsour, the point of my comment was meant to reflect on the potential of Malik being able to learn the playbook somewhat faster than someone who perhaps scored an 18 or so on the Wonderlic Test. Hi or low scores certainly do not correlate directly with the physical abilities to be a football player nor does it directly correlate with football acumen. After all Dan Marino scored around a 16 on the test and is in the Hall of Fame and Terry Bradshaw was well below average on the test as well. On the other end of the scale Ryan Fitzpatrick scored a 48 which is the highest ever recorded by a quarterback and couldn't hold a candle on the playing field compared to Marino or Bradshaw.

Thus, my point is centered on our new backup quarterback and perhaps he can learn the playbook a little quicker which should help prepare him to contribute to the team a little quicker.

I think the Wonderlic is overrated as an athletic metric, Brett Favre was dumb as a box of rocks and he seemed more than capable on the football field. Thomas Hollywood Henderson famously said of Terry Bradshaw that he couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the C and the T.

He is a running QB and as such perhaps they envision a few plays for him. Hopefully he can run that Philly scrum play or a simple sneak better than Jordan. The 49er game may have been different having converted that 4th down.

Do I dare say he could be our Taysom Hill?

Taysom Hill the great gadget player didn't do much for improving the Saints record in his years there. I never thought he was a loss in GB. I mean, you don't take the ball out of Rodger's hands to give it to a QB like Hill. GB has plenty of skill position talent; I don't see them needing a gadget play for a backup QB.

The two negative things I have discovered while researching Malik Willis is (1) he doesn't process the field and options quick enough; (2) he tends to be slightly inaccurate. He is highly athletic and a strong runner and has a big arm, however those are two major problems if true. Can he be coached and improve those two weaknesses? If he can the Packers ended up with a potentially very good back-up to Love.

Kristian Welch was a great player but they had too many great LB's on the team to keep him. I believe he gets put on a team's 53 and well deserved. If not maybe they can get him to sign their PS

Eric Wilson Great? He's a borderline PS guy and has been cut/not resigned by multiple teams. Hopper and Cooper have proven nothing. Mcdoufie is average at best. Quay is either elite or trash depending on the day.

Pratt will clear waivers. Most of the guys in camp are there to round out camp and only a handful of roster spots are really being considered. Team don't poach 7th round QBs, if they wanted him that much they would have drafted him so they could have him camp.

No real surprise in any of the three. Telfort and Glover both started the Ravens preseason game ahead of all the other available tackles and did as well as could be expected. I suspect one or both might be cut prior to the season however if Gute finds someone on the waiver wire he likes better.

No word yet on Melton or DuBose?

Some of these signings make no logical sense.
1.) Kristian Welch: easily the best player of the entire preseason gets cut at the LB position the weakest position group on the defense. Hopper and Cooper kept due to being rookies, Mcdouffie and Quay are understandable even though they've been below average. However, Eric Wilson has never shown any ability at all on defense at the LB spot. I was shocked he was still on the team after last year. He's a gutter trash LB at best but they're starting him at MLB???? That's an abomination of a decision. Jeff just failed big time with this move. Kristian is going to be picked up ASAP by another team. Eric is 30 years old and has no upside. He's been cut by multiple bad teams for a reason.

2.) Qilson TE: He looked exponentially better than Simms and Davis as a pass catching TE. In camp at times he looked superior to Musgrave. Yet they already cut him???

3.) Royce and Dillard: If these jokers are still on the team it has to be for other reasons than football because they're beat all day every day in camp and preseason. Royce qas never more than a PS level OG yet he still makes the 53 every single year some how.

4.) Joeseph: The dude has a 78% FG% for camp. If they keep this career bum they're going to lose in the playoffs due to a missed FG. Riley Patterson just became available, he's a 88% FG% career kicker. This should be an obvious move.

5.)

Keys form here for me:

With Christian Welch cut, are they keeping Mosby, Cox, or Anderson?

With Pratt cut, are they keeping Tyler Davis on the roster despite the shoulder injury, or is he or Jordan Morgan headed to IR since they still have one call-up slot open pre-53?

Exeptionally few camp cuts get picked up on another team's 53 man roster so stop hyperventilating about Pratt, Clifford, and Welch. If the Packers want them back, they'll offer them spots on the PS and these guys will likely be availabe.

And those here who are complaining about letting go of draft picks, well when you have a lot of them you will also end up parting with a lot of them. Late round picks are late round picks for a reason - they have enough talent to get a good look but enough flaws to be non-viable if they cannot transcend those flaws. There are people here who were clamoring for Clifford to START last year. Where are you now?

You shouldn't be surprised if Dillon remains with the team in other capacities. He could end up in scouting or coaching or doing something in PR. He's been a good guy in Green Bay, he likes it here, the Packers seem to like him. Everybody's happy. This is a win for Dillon. He's 26, he's made over $5M already, and he's with a great organization. Some type of injury settlement will be reached. He can do what he wants.
