Packers Reportedly Hire Running Backs Coach.

According to FoxSports.com's Alex Marvez, Mike McCarthy will fill his empty running backs coach spot by hiring ex-Rams RB coach, Ben Sirmans.

Sirmans most recently worked with Rams' rookie RB Todd Gurley, who had a fantastic first season and was recently named NFL Rookie of the Year by the PFWA (Professional Football Writers of America).

Sirmans seemingly has a knack for helping young running backs. In 2014 it was rookie 3rd round pick Tre Mason who rushed for 765 yards in 12 games. In 2013 he guided rookie 5th round pick Zac Stacey, who rushed for 973 yards in 12 games.

Let's hope he can help Eddie Lacy get back on track.

Still can't believe how much has changed in less than a week. Sounds like a very good move. Surprised he was available and we were his first choice, or at least I think we were.

He was just let go from the Rams. The Rams had 5 coaches whose contracts weren't renewed and he was one of them. Another was Ray Sherman, an excellent WR coach and Ex-Packers Coach. Sherman might be worth an interview too.

That makes sense with move to LA, everything staff wise has to be up in the air.

Right Nick. The Rams fired their Offensive Coordinator, but reportedly are interested in hiring an outside OC or going within the staff. Not too surprising that some coaches did not get renewed. I went on the SB Nation blog for St. Louis - there was quite a bit of hating on some of the fired coaches, but none about Sirmans. There was one comment (that got greened) expressing surprise that Sirmans was not renewed, and no one replied expressing a contrary opinion. I guess the fans were okay with Sirmans (not that we generally know a lot about position coaches).

That's right. First thing I did because I had really no idea WHO this guy was. When the Packers hired Gash he had been out of Football the year before, just wondering if the same was true again. All I had read was he wasn't renewed along with several other coaches. Heck he did pretty good with Mason and Stacy so that's exciting. I'm not sure exactly what you do to coach Gurley! : )

Exactly! We do not know what those coaches and asistents are doing, I mean, we do not know what they are really doing (list of things) when they are performing at their position. So, it is always little nebulous when people here demamding some coaches to be fired...

I know the Rams have had offensive problems, but if you read Sirmans' bio, running backs have been his specialty for a long, long time. In addition, their running game has been good with Stacy, Mason and Gurley the past few years, even though the offensive line isn't that good. This is a good move and i am glad he was still available.

LMOA!!!!! That's their D-Line Ima fubar. The O-Line has exactly one player drafted in 1st round. Gotta love those misinformed Vikings Fans.

That OL is a disaster...problems keeping guys healthy, can't protect Foles. The only reason they had a run game was because Gurley is the incredible talent he is.

Awesome hire! we need to dab into FA just a tad to get an OLB and MLB as insurance. I would like to hold onto Hayward for depth but he is expendable. I would love Von Miller paired up with Matthews. And a stout ILB. Then we can focus on Offensive line and TE through the draft.

You're not asking for much, Von Miller? No way that could happen.

What worries me about lacy is, he was overweight during the season. What will he do during the off season? Will he come to camp as big as Raji?

Exactly. After MM called him out, if he does not come into camp in phenomenal shape, not only will he jeopardize his being on the Packers, but who else would want someone that didn't read the writing on the wall. Either way he'll lose a lot of money. But I am certain he will. He has everything to play for, pride and a contract with the Green Bay Packers!!

If he wants to play DT then yes... I hope he got the message. 10 lbs less and he'd be a great RB

After the 2013 season Laveon Bell came to camp in 2014 about 15 pounds lighter. He was much faster, quicker, and didn't really lose any power.. Would love to see Lacy come in 30 pounds lighter minimum. Would like to see what Lacy could do at 225 or 230.

If Lacy comes into camp overweight, he will be gone. It would be a direct challenge to MM and Lacy will lose that battle.

At least this guy's not from Cleveland like the last guy but why can't we ever hire anyone that isn't from a dysfunctional organization?

Good coaches don't tend to leave good organizations and good organizations don't flush good coaches. There are a lot of Miami ex-coaches and not many ex New England coaches. I hope that he is a good fit and a smart coach. Mistakes on this front are measured in years of lost development and actual game results. We can't afford to make too many more of these coaching flips.

I'm not so sure. A lot of NE coaches left. Almost all went back to NE but couldn't really do much anywhere else... it's a relationship business. But realistically could you really see Matt patricia as a NFL HC? Weis crennel mangini McDaniels were all pretty bad as HCs and maybe are not that great as positional coaches either. It all depends who does what. The Packers O was great in 2014 but just mediocre in 2015. Coaches only changed positions and responsibilities...

And if good coaches don't leave good organizations then why did holmgren leave GB? He wasn't forced out...

Good coaches leave good organizations when they have opportunities elsewhere... all the time.

Holmgren wanted absolute power with both HC/GM roles, he wasn't going to get it in GB.

If you are a talented, rising positional coach or other assistant coach, working under a talented, entrenched Coordinator or HC, you only have lateral position changes available to you. If you want to grow and gain an opportunity to move UP the ladder, you have to go to another organization.

It happens all the time- it's how coaching trees are developed. The idea that good coaches don't leave good organizations is completely flawed.

Content coaches tend not to leave good organizations may be more accurate.

Tell me how this guy worked with some average guy of talent and made him better. Gurley, one of the best if not the best running back in the league, doesn't need a lot of coaching.
Wait til the Pillsbury Dough Boy Lacy shows up for practice next Spring, that should be interesting as hell.

How do you know who does or does not need coaching... I bet all players need coaching if they want to improve.
