Packers Preseason Stock Report

This is the final preseason stock report before the Packers 53 man roster is finalized.

Thankfully, the preseason is over and today is the big day for a lot of the young players on this roster.  Roster cutdown day is a day full of anxiety when players are on pins and needles waiting to hear their fate for the upcoming season and possibly their careers.

In this weeks stock report, I will highlight the players who I think stood out the most this preseason:

1. Darrius Shepherd:

Aside from the fumble on the kickoff Thursday night, Shepherd has been outstanding.  He has shown to be valuable both on special teams and as a receiver.  He has proven to the team that he can be a reliable player who can make game-changing play after game-changing play. Right now Shepherd has put himself on the inside track to make the roster as a wide receiver/special teams player.

2. Ty Summers:

Ty Summers has shown progression throughout the preseason and has a nose for the ball.  He has been able to improve his tackling and has the chance to become a rotational player in 2019.  Summers clearly has the skills to contribute, now it is up to Mike Pettine's tutelage and Ty's ability to further grasp the fundamentals of the scheme and be consistently at the right place at the right time.  If Summers can continue his solid play he could be one of the steals of this years draft class.

3. Dexter Williams:

Dexter Williams led the Packers running back core this preseason, but it wasn't his statistics that caught my eye.  What caught my eye was his downhill running, vision, and patience.  At times, he looked like a veteran running back squaring up his shoulders and patiently finding the holes.  In addition to his talent as a runner, Williams showed tremendous upside in the screen game.  I really hope the offensive staff coaches Williams hard this season and gives him opportunities to shine.  My bold prediction is that Dexter Williams will be the Packers number 1 running back going into the 2021 season.

4. Trevor Davis:

Each of the last two seasons, the Packers media and fan base have been clamoring about and writing about the demise of Trevor Davis.  Despite his early injury, Trevor Davis has once again earned his spot on the Packers 53 man roster.  The cherry on top for Davis in this preseason was he gave us all a glimpse of the value he can provide in Matt LaFleur's offense.  Davis also showed some glimpses of possibly emerging as an option at wide receiver this season.  Stay tuned to see how Trevor Davis progresses in 2019.

5. Allen Lazard:

Unfortunately, Lazard is probably the odd man out of the wide receiver position group, but he sure distinguished himself this preseason.  Lazard made big play after big play and showed the ability to catch the ball in tight spaces and tight windows.  He has strong hands and an optimal frame to catch any jump ball.  I think the Packers would be thrilled if he makes it to the practice squad for another year of seasoning.  If an injury occurs in the wide receiver core, Lazard would be able to step in and contribute right away.

6. Danny Vitale:

The Italian Stallion as I will call him (hopefully he's Italian or I'm screwed), finds his legend growing every day.  Why? the dude is jacked out of his mind and is extremely versatile.  I am excited to see him blocking in different formations, getting an occasional carry on 3rd and 1, and showing his athleticism in the open field after catching a pass down the sidelines.

Players I'm Down On:

1. DeShone Kizer:

Kizer looked like he knew Thursday was his last game as a Packer.  His constant problem has been changing systems and struggling to make fundamental and routine throws consistently.  I think Kizer has to latch onto a franchise that is open to keeping three quarterbacks and grooming them in their system for multiple years.  That formula will give him the best chance to be a backup quarterback in this league.

2. Mason Crosby:

Although I am not personally down on Mason Crosby, the Packers seem to be.  In years past, they would cut the second kicker before the 4th preseason game and not given him as much work as they gave Ficken.  Then, to make matters worse, Mason missed his first PAT attempt during the preseason finale.  If the Packers are really looking to save money and move on from Crosby, the die may have already been cast.  I think the Packers SHOULD hold onto Mason Crosby.

3. J'Mon Moore:

I just think we have not seen enough progress from Moore in the year-plus he's been in the organization.  He definitely needs more work with his in-game route running, which is fixable over time, but his real problem resides with his inability to make routine catches as well as his inability to catch the ball with his hands.  Could he earn a spot on the roster because of his draft capital and guaranteed money, yes, but should he be on the Packers 53 man roster, absolutely not.

4. Kevin King:

I've stayed away from Kevin King all preseason because I'm always voicing my displeasure over him and thought I'd give him a chance to recover from the thousandth injury of his career, but I couldn't help myself.  Look, Kevin King has proven when healthy, he can shut down the deep threat and be an average starter in this league.  The problem is, he is absolutely NEVER healthy.  With that being said, I hope King gets well soon and the Packers can get 7 or 8 games out of him this year.

Gut Feelings at 9:48 am CT:

1. I think Mason Crosby could be traded or released; the Jets could be in play via trade and obviously, the Bears will be in play if he is released.

2. I'm not sure if Gutekunst will be able to admit he whiffed on J'Mon Moore.  I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers stash him on the 53 and make him inactive every week until he can provide value at special teams.

3. The Packers are only keeping two quarterbacks.  I still think it's a toss-up between Kizer and Boyle. Hopefully, Washington would consider parting with Colt McCoy or maybe Gutekkunst signs Brock Osweiler.

4. If the Packers need to bring in more help to improve the depth of the 53 man roster, releasing Brian Bulaga could still be in play. (I would hang onto him)

5. I think Marcedes Lewis is released today.  I just think there are too many more needs on this roster for the Packers to hold onto four tight ends.

*The roster will change before and after this article is published so we'll see how it ages in real-time.

I just watched highlights of the AFC title game last year. It was incredible how often NE picked up 1st downs on 3rd and 4, 3rd and 3 etc... by running the ball. I believe the coaches will try to emulate that with what has been said about running the football. We have heard evidence that rbs will be more important since Gutey is looking to trade for more depth. I see the packers doing several things as a consequence; 1) pick up 1 or 2 rbs such as Rex Burkhead, TJ Yeldon, Carlos Hyde, or another cut veteran player. 2) Mercedes Lewis makes the team as the best blocking TE we have. 3) We only keep 5 WR with EQ on the pup.

EQ is not eligible for the PUP since he practiced in camp.

I would put EQ on the IR and just let Shepherd be on the 53 w/out risk of a waiver claim. Kiumerow and Allison fit the same profile as Equan.

I appreciate getting personal evaluations of the players from the staff at CHTV, as well as fans.
***
So glad we kept Crosby alive and kicking. I think he'll be a top kicker for the next five years, maybe ten.
***
I'm also glad to keep Boyle, who may have an "it" factor of high potential, with perhaps a little Tony Romo in him.
That doesn't mean he's ready to go this year if needed to fill in for Rodgers. Maybe sign a vet QB, and put Tony, I mean Tim, on the PS.
***
It's hard to cut Lazard and keep Graham, especially if they block about the same.
Also, I wonder if Vitale catches as well as Graham and blocks as well as Lewis.
In other words, should we let go of both Graham and Lewis?
***
Sad to say, it seems time to let go of J'Mon Moore; and, because of continual injuries, Kevin King may not be far behind.
In general, I'm sad to see guys leaving the Packers, and wish them well.
***
Still wondering what happens with Keith Ford.

Still rooting for King to retain his crown.
Still remember his big interception late in the game to help beat the 49ers last season.

I think it was Al that suggest releasing Lewis with ESB on the roster. ESB to IR, then resign Lewis. That sounds reasonable to me.

They released Ficken and Moore. Crosby is staying.

Moore, for all his potential, did nothing to earn a roster slot during a game. Perhaps he gets a PS invite and perhaps he accepts it, but that is unfortunately the best he deserves and, although he won’t see it now, the best place for him to mature.

Crosby’s retention may be one of the worst decisions. He has looked neither accurate nor to possess the leg strength even of last year. He did not beat Ficken in camp (a tie really) but he lost to him in games. He lost even more heavily to the distance to the end zone.

I never wanted Moore. Thought he was a bad pick. Bust! Preferred ESB. Crosby should have been traded. I wonder if A-Rod didn't weigh in on that one? He is his roomy.

We've seen enough of Mr Moore. The Packers should move on and not give up a valuable PS position to a person who squandered his natural abilities by failing to fix deficiencies that were identified last year. Instead of reading stories of J'Mon working on drills to improve himself, we see him cuttin up with others at sporting events, wearing fancy gold jewelry and read about his recklessly driving an expensive car that is normally afforded by more established players.

No, there are too many other young players doing the right things and making every attempt to improve themselves to overcome perceived shortfalls just for a chance to make the roster. Lazard, Shepherd and WRs like them deserve those PS positions if cut before the J'Mon Moores of the world. It shouldn't even be close.

Prediction: Patrick, Nijman stay. Madison to PS.

Reason for Nijman: if he’s got anything at all, must keep him. Guards are much easier to find.

It’s not hard to root for McCray. He is perhaps the best jack of all trades but master of none that we have had in a long time. That said, a good roster shouldn’t need that. Finally we don’t. He was at best 3rd if not 4th line depth at every position.

I agree, he will find a berth. He isn’t PS eligible so it won’t be here.

You mean releasing Bulaga was conceivable to you earlier? Wow. The drop off is significant from Bryan to whoever his backup will be. Unless there is some known health condition that puts him at risk, Bryan Bulaga represents one of the more valuable players on this team. Cutting him when healthy would be very reckless. Good starting NFL tackles are hard to come by.

Not saying he should be cut, but when you talk about "some known health condition that puts him at risk", it's hard to find another Packers player of the last 15 years not named Perry or Harrel that is as frequently injured as Bulaga.
