Packers Periscope: Packers VS. Bears

We peer into the Periscope to look at the past, present and future of the Packers and Bears.

First of all, congrats to all of us. We made it. It's Week 1! And, oh, what a Week 1 it is. Aaron Rod-- I mean, Jordan Love and his Green Bay Packers head to Chicago in the Battle of the Vitrolic Offseason on Twitter Bowl, where both fanbases were much louder than usual.

The offseason and everything that happened is a dead horse that I'll save from another beating. But to summarize, Love and a heap of young talent looked genuinely good throughout the course of camp while the Monsters of the Midway are looking to prove they're moved on from being the worst team in football a season ago.

Now, let's raise the Packers Periscope and take a look at the past, present and future of this rivalry.

The Past

Have you heard that the Packers now lead the all-time series with Chicago 105-95-6? No? OK, well let me go ahead and rehash that one more time for good measure. Green Bay has dominated - as we all know and certainly cherish - the last 30 years or so, overcoming a series deficit and creating a nice cushion. A cushion that we hope will extend with a new owner wearing #10.

More recently, however, the Packers were able to swipe both games from the Bears a season ago, the latter of which was very much in the balance that ultimately decided the fate of the two teams. The Bears would finish with the worst record in football, while the Packers were a play-in game away from the playoffs after rallying with a late-season spark.

But so much of that recent history was dictated by famed former owner of the Chicago Bears, Aaron Rodgers. With notable roster turnover at receiver and tight end in addition to the new quarterback, will the Packers be able to continue that dominance?

But the Packers aren't the only team with new faces. GM Ryan Poles has totally flipped the team adding new talent almost across the board - except at quarterback. Only eleven players remain from when he took the job a season ago. Entering his third season, Justin Fields has shown a lot of flashes as well as a lot of mistakes. He certainly wasn't helped by a historically bad offensive line, but as we saw on his streaking touchdown against the Packers last year at Soldier Field, he's a threat no doubt. And with receiver DJ Moore on the outside, the Bears look to be more formidable offensively.

The Present

With so much change on each team, this game is riddled with mystery, which will make it an extremely fun and exciting lead-up. It was announced recently that OG Teven Jenkins will be out the first four games for Chicago. Not ideal for a team who struggled to block for their quarterback, but definitely not a bad thing for a Packers defensive line that looks drastically improved and disruptive in three preseason games.

Also noteworthy for the Bears is the change at running back. David Montgomery had been a stalwart and thorn in Green Bay's side in his four seasons with the team, but now resides in Motown. Filling in for him is Khalil Herbert, a trusty backup getting his chance in the spotlight.

As for the good guys, where to begin? The preseason showed enough of Jordan Love to feel at least comfortable with him going into the regular season. Each of his final passes were for touchdowns, and he time and again showed poise, command and calmness in the pocket. The arm talent and athleticism are there, but inaccuracy seems to be his bugaboo.

Up front, the line looks to be very formidable with Zach Tom appearing to have won the RT job. The weak link, as with last year, was Josh Myers who was hit or miss in the preseason. He'll need to improve to A) keep his job and B) not get Love killed. But overall, this will be a strong unit and will need to be as the run game will be integral to the team's success.

Defensively, Joe Barry is fresh out of excuses. Talent galore, especially in the front seven, will need to be the anchor of this team. And outside, Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, Keisean Nixon and preseason stud Carrington Valentine look to round out a really strong unit. But let's see how far they're off the line on 3rd and 3 before we crown them.

I think both fanbases will be relieved come gameday. It's been a looooong offseason in terms of social media banter. It's time the two teams fought it out.

The Future

Packers - Bears, Soldier Field, 3:25 local time, Fox America's Game of the Week. What better way to start the season?

Green Bay, probably the more unknown of the two teams, walks into Chicago as 1.5 point underdogs at the time this was written. We'll see how much late money goes each way to swing that line, but the general consensus is that Vegas thinks GB is a touch better, but are going on the road.

As for a prediction, Chicago was the worst team in football for a reason and there's only so much improvement that can take place in the course of one offseason. They're undoubtedly better, which is why there's so much hype around them this year (ok, maybe that's self-manufactured within the fanbase, but hype nonetheless). But the Packers roster, from top to bottom, is going well under the radar, and understandably so. Youth at key positions will do that, but there is talent and speed galore. This team will make mistakes, but they're going to be done very fast.

This could be a game with offenses that will struggle, which can be the case in Week 1. I do expect this Packers defense to come in with something to prove, certainly reading all the headlines about the Bears all offseason. I think if anything, we get very high energy which is something this team has really lacked, especially in Week 1, under Matt LaFleur.

It'll be a fun game no doubt, and hopefully one that shows exactly how this team and its new quarterback are more ready than anyone outside of 1265 realizes.

I hadn’t realized the Bears are returning just 11 players from last season’s worst roster. That’s a big turnaround.

The Packers meanwhile begin 2023 with one of the best RB tandems in the NFL, and at minimum, a top 10 OL. Add in what should be an improved D, behind a superior set of pass rushers billed as equally stout at stopping the run and holding the edge, and I like our chances to come out of CHI with a W.

Being both teams will be loaded with new players, we should anticipate some blown assignments from GB & CHI alike, evening things out. Who will be better coached? Better prepared? That will be key. LaFleur needs this one. Love having a big game leading LaFleur’s O should tip the scales.

The Bears will have their hands full trying to stop GB’s pass rush, especially with their OL decimated by injury. Hopefully, the Packers exploit those weaknesses with a punishing, aggressive defense, controlling Fields, affecting his passing up front, with plenty of ball hawking by our DBs.

I’m callin’ Packer. 75-3. (I changed it from 2 to 3 because we’re not giving up a Safety to these knuckleheads).

That would make up for the 61-7 shellacking I watched back in 1980.

But will JB really take out the opponents best chance and allow the defense to play to its strengths --- I hope so --- or try to play vanilla system as they did for ten weeks or so last year.

Defensive game plan is easy enough. Jaire...erase Moore from the field. Everybody else...stop the run.

Offense...Aaron, AJ...run them over. Jordan, hit some shot plays off play action every time they stack the line.

Packers: 28-10

Watson and Doubs availability on Sun CRUCIAL.
Otherwise Heath, Reed, TEs will have to step up.
And as Nags always says ------ "Run the Damned Ball" with the AJs.

It looks like the injury bug is going to keep us from starting the season with a win. It’s a shame we can go pretty much the whole preseason without much for injuries but of course right before are first game we get the injury bug to some of our main players.

If the offense keeps making excuses.
You can write off the season now.
I never saw so much pressure
on this defense.
(Since Reggie White signed.)
It's like they want Barry to fail.

So what is the message were sending the league?
That were not ready to play, or scared?
Or we miss Rodgers already?

Seriously, The 5 year plan was the super-bowl.
Instead we've shifted to the infrastructure.

Eight One Picks on this defense; they better prove something. If Watson and Doubs ( the receiving corps) are still lame on Sunday, the passing game will follow suit. Greenhorns in the playmaking positions and a 50/50 Left tackle are not the basis for inspiration. The D will have to generate turnovers for any chance to pull off a victory.

Good morning everyone, Packer football is back, and it's good to see the familiar faces here.
Being in Santa Cruz, I didn't get to see any preseason games, but have read about the "Have It"s and "Have Not"s. And then, there's the normal one or two URFAs that always seem to make the squad and get the accolades.
Now I'll get to see them and judge for myself. My 93 Y/O mom in Little Chute is biased, so I can't trust her assessment. She was 63 when Favre took over, and thinks he should still be playing.
It'll be fun to see Love as the starter running LaFleur's entire system, the young receiver corps, and whether or not Joe Barry will have a job next year. The latter is the biggest question mark to me. I'm trying to be optimistic for a decent season, and maybe more. A winning season would work for me.
Buy hey, here we go, a new season with mixed expectations and a very young team. Gives a whole new perspective and meaning to "Wait 'till next year"!

Good job Tony, putting out there that both team’s fan bases are excited to see their new team in action. I know Jim Miller and Pat Kirwin think the Bears will win so it will be a very intriguing season.
