Packers Parting Ways with Shawn Mennenga

Tom Pelissero reports Shawn Mennenga is OUT

Well, the first domino has fallen. NFL Network is reporting that Special Teams Coordinator Shawn Mennenga will not be back with the Packers next season. After two straight seasons that found the Packers' special teams units ranked near the bottom of the league, Coach LaFleur will look to fix that part of this Packers' team.

One possible replacement that would make sense would be Brayden Coombs, formerly Detroit's Special Teams Coordinator, who ewas recently fired by the team. The Lions' special teams were ranked in the top five of the league. Sounds like a typical Lions move, right? However, Rob Demovsky is reporting that the Packers may be looking to promote from within:

I'm a pretty hard core fan, but will admit I've never heard of Drayton. Can't be any worse. It's amazing that this has been a problem seemingly for nearly 25 years. Maybe it's a lack of talent, but I really think it's coaching.

Why would an assistant on the train wreck be the best person to reverse years of mediocrity?

If he was worth it should have fired SM and promoted him mid season. Honestly, if true and he gets it, I think I’ve just lost a lot of faith in LaFleur being better with coaches than MM.

MLF has proven he runs a modern scheme that fits today's NFL better than MM's spread concepts. And he has proven that he will keep his teams healthier than MM.

That's it so far.

GBP haven't had a good ST coach since Dick Jauron.

Well, that didn't take long. With the extra draft picks we have, it will be a good opportunity to partially restock the bottom of the roster. Nowhere to go but up, but then again, I thought that was the case when they let Zook go.

Coombs supposedly got fired because he went "rogue." I like him already. Hopefully the Packers won't be so conservative this time and saddle us with another boring and ineffective choice.

Should not promote anyone from within who had a single thing to do with this years special teams.

Except that MLF can develop him the way he wants him to coach. He will have less baggage and bad habits then someone who has held the job with another team.

Also a promotion from within will cost less money.

Thanks, Since ‘61

The Packers have plenty of cash for coaches, just no salary cap room for players. Hire the best available - they went the cheap route last time and look what happened.

Unless they have been there communicating the issues to MLF and has good ideas on how to fix it.

Exactly what I was thinking. I don't know anything about Drayton except he was part of the problem if he was on the ST staff.

Let’s not employ the Peter Principle here or we will have years more mediocrity.

Justicar is so right. Go for a proven special teams guy.....don't guess and don't fill within. Sorry, i think this move is a double Duh move.

Let's trust MLF with help from the front office decide where to from here. And, that includes a handful of decisions with players whose contracts are up.

Green Bay's two pro-bowl players are in jeopardy yes, but folks i remain to have faith in MLF and Gutey..and Murphy for that matter. After all, who is forgetting we jettisoned MM too late, but look what these gentlemen have created. Regretfully, we all experienced the ghost of McCarthy on Sunday, i thought it was over. Admittedly, i am one of those Lombardi era fans that will never forget what happened in the NFCCG loss to Seattle-that tops them all. Absolutely love the new environment going 26-6 and 11-1 in the division under MLF. Is anyone forgetting Alexander was Gutey very first selection? How's R. Gary improvements?

Lastly, let us not forgot the outstanding job these scouting teams/FO selections of these top two players (#62. #33) both snatched in the 5th round. That is saying something, indeed! Looking forward, please let's be grateful, patient and relax.....have faith!!

It's a tough call for the orgazation. Go all in and take the major Cap hit for one year, or go in a different direction (what ever that 'direction' is) and rebuild or reload. The Packers do not have deep pockets, so this decision will have massive reverbs for years to come. For example there is a chance that Gute as GM realizes the Cap is Too Large, and decides to tear everything down. A major rebuild is not likely, but possible with the Cap Hit the organization could take. That includes firing all the coaches and starting from ground zero. Just remember, Gute is one of the most cold blooded and powerful GM's in the Business today. At this point nothing what he does would surprise me.

Why didn't they do this mid-season?
MLF (probably) fires Pettine for bad play call. Does Gute fire MLF back for a bad play call? MLF has done a very good job but he was handed the talent. Some of his play calling has not been great. And his team prep needs some work too. I guess that's the way it goes.

Packers over achieved last year. This year, they earned their spot. Hard to think about next year already. I need a vacation.

Overdue move, but finally made. Now find a quality replacement. And then move on to the DC.

BTW...You're definitely right. Isn't it funny (not funny haha) the older you get the HIGHER number of people you know who have broke a hip or leg in a fall?

SMH...Like my Mom used to say, "Getting old isn't for wimps".

In typical fashion they will go with in house guy, in all my years did you ever see a ST group so unspecial? I don't remember and I could be wrong see a returner cross the mid field line after kickoff, or punt returner break a return more than 20 yards. Ugly, then on kickoffs holy crap how about a squib kick when you can't cover. Try the Lions guy who knows can't get worse.
