Packers Offensive Line the Unsung Heroes of Week 1 Win

There was a lot to talk about after the Packers 38-20 win over the Bears in the season opener. Much of the discussion surrounded Jordan Love and how well he played in his first start as the team’s starting quarterback. The strong play of Aaron Jones and Romeo Doubs also got a lot of attention from fans and the media as well. On defense, the young players like Devonte Wyatt and Quay Walker each had standout games. But one unit that played well and didn’t get as much attention as they rightfully earned was the Green Bay offensive line.

The offensive line did a very good job of protecting Love throughout the game. Love was only sacked once in the entire contest. He often had time to look to his second or third receivers and find someone open downfield. According to pro-football-reference.com, the Bears had only recorded two hurries and five pressures during the entire game. By contrast, the Packers had four sacks, seven hurries and 13 pressures.

On the handful of occasions nobody got open, Love had the athleticism to escape the pocket and gain yards down field.

The best pass blocking in the game came from the two starting tackles. Neither tackle allowed a sack in the game.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari was his usual self and received an outstanding grade in this game from Pro Football Focus. If Bakhtiari’s knee can hold up and he remains healthy, he can return to his All-Pro form from before he suffered his knee injury late in the 2020 campaign.

Right tackle Zach Tom, who won the job during the preseason, also earned excellent grades in pass protection. Tom lacks the classic size that scouts ideally look for in a tackle, but his intelligence, technique, and willingness to finish every play make him extremely effective.

The starting guards were good in pass protection but not outstanding according to PFF. Elgton Jenkins was responsible for the one sack the Packers gave up in Chicago and had the lowest grade among the linemen in pass blocking as a result. Jon Runyan was steady and effective at protecting Love.

Center Josh Myers graded out effectively in pass protection as well. He did a good job of preventing the interior linemen and inside linebackers from pushing the pocket back and getting pressure on Love.

The offense was outstanding on third down in this game and the strong pass blocking of the offensive line was a major reason for it. The Packers went 9-for-16 in the game which means they converted third downs at a 56.3 percent success rate.

The Packers run blocking was not as effective as the pass protection. That has been an issue for the team in recent seasons. The Packers gained 92 yards on 32 carries in the game and had a long run of just 10 yards. That included a kneel down by backup quarterback Sean Clifford and a two-yard loss on an end around by Jayden Reed.

Tom had outstanding grades as a run blocker as well and was by far the best on the team in Week 1. Bakhtiari graded out well with Jenkins and Runyan being solid.

The biggest problem among the run blockers was Myers whose run blocking grade was so bad it was the lowest grade among any starter at any position on the Packers offense.

The first offensive play of the game illustrated Myers’ struggles at run blocking quite well. Defensive lineman Andrew Billings blew past Myers immediately after the snap of the ball and disrupted Aaron Jones’ run which was stopped for a one-yard loss.

Myers and the rest of the Green Bay offensive line need to improve their consistency especially as run blockers for the offense to run on all cylinders.

Still, in the season opener, the pass protection was very strong, and it allowed Love to maximize his opportunities and make second and third reads. The longer the Packers sustain this level of pass protection, the more confidence Love will have that he can look downfield and execute plays without constant fear of being sacked.

Effectively running the ball isn't an option. That just opens up the passing game. I know! I'm preaching to the choir.

"Myers and the rest of the Green Bay offensive line need to improve their consistency especially as run blockers for the offense to run on all cylinders."

Unfortunately, the problem with Myers is he is consistently a bad run blocker. It would be great if he could be inconsistent by mixing in some good blocking with the bad.

Agreed CDH.
IMO - consistency in run blocking is one of two words I'd use to describe the level of performance.
The second word is unacceptable.
Not sure if it's scheme, talent or what, but we are not a good run blocking team.
It is understood that we've drafted linemen with positional versatility and athleticism.
We have not, as long as I can remember, drafted for brute strength and nasty attitudes.
Those traits are present in most all good run blockers and they are missing from our OL room for the most part.

It's only Josh Myers that's the problem.

Zach Tom lacks ideal size for an OT, and he run blocks very well. Here's a crazy idea: put him at his best position which is center, and put a dominating size person at RT. Nijman, Walker or Mt Caleb. All three are capable.

Too easy to fix this problem.

There should also be a strong mention of the Special Teams...a great return and a 52 yd field goal...both plays seemed non-existent last year...this development is a Great Improvement!

Well Gil, I will agree that the offensive line can be classified as heroes, but I'm not so sure they are "UNSUNG". Most every Packer fan on this board knows how well that group played and how instrumental they are in both the success of both the running game and Jordan Love's success in the passing game. They demonstrated their prowess during the preseason and continued on in the season opener. I expect them to perform well in the game against the Falcons.

Very fair Ferrari-Driver although the media is focusing more on Love and Doubs and the D so I guess that's where I was coming from. Either way, this unit is playing well and it really benefits the offense. Thanks for the comment.

I thought they did well, but I am concerned about Grady Jarrett victimizing Myers this Sunday. He's easily the weak link and Jarrett is probably the best player on Atlanta's line.

Everyone seems to agree that Josh Myers' run blocking is the one glaring weakness of the O-line. I've heard in the past that Jon Runyan's run blocking has not been so good, but it seemed to be okay against Chicago. So maybe we are down to just one weak spot that needs to be addressed. That's progress, I guess, although Myers seems to be getting worse, not better. Could it be a confidence thing that he could work through? Or a bad habit in his technique? The coaching staff seems to be banking on Myers to improve, at least for now. I wonder how long they will stick with him if he does not improve his run blocking. Maybe they are thinking that it's far better to have a problem with run blocking than with pass blocking, so they are reluctant to mess with the chemistry of the O-line.

They have Myers for his movement skills. He was out there with Runyan on the throwback play to A.Jones and they sprung him for 52 yards. He's good pulling for the outside zone. This O line is not designed to be a power gap unit. This is not a power running team.

If he can get to the hole? Some complained about the toss/pitch play to Dillon. The design is to get him to the corner faster and turn upfield without the handoff and additional lateral steps. He may have maxed his development. Get him in space with the screen plays and he can stream roll a CB. I-formation may help?

#28 is a power runner. He needs power run blocking and if you're not going to give that to him you shouldn't put him out there except to block.

The worst lies are the ones you tell yourself.
"Jordan Love needs to get the ball out."
He doesn't need 2 and 3 reads to avoid the play called.
If you're going to make him Rodgers. Don't!
Rodgers needed time and never got it.
At some point Love won't either.

Therefore the need to bag OT with a one pick in '24 and a Guard with a two, or three pick if necessary. They cannot overpay Runyan in free agency.

I see at least one safety in first than center or guard or even ot after that add in another safety in later rounds Maybe a running back but that depends on jones next year I’m sorry but if Dillion does not start getting better I hope they let him walk

I think Jones stays. He's a game changer and in the same time a team player, a leader. Even if some of us don't consider his contract changes a real pay-cut it means that he is at least open for dialog and willing to be here. Look for Taylor, Jacobs, not to mention our great duo of Adams and Rodgers. You can't build on that.

And as you said if Dillon keeps this level I think he will be let go. But I don't think the draft RB until day 3 especially with Wilson on the roster who is still yet to show what he's got. My way too early predictions for first 2 rounds are safety and IOL, can be specifically center. WR room is crowded, TE (maybe late round filler depends on Deguara's performance), DL and LB full like never. There can also be a high pick on CB, but it depends on Stokes.

What we are speculating about, it's week 2... ;) just beat the Falcons!

Definitely OT is not our priority for the next draft. Interior linemen probably come after S, but this season will make that clear.

Run blocking is ineffective because of one man, and that is Josh Myers. NOT AJ Dillon. Get him blocked through the D line and LBs, see what he can do. Without that, he can't even be evaluated.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Go back and look at the tape. There were times the line blocked 6, 8, 10 seconds for Rodgers. It's been well documented how well they worked to give him time. ALL QB's need the required time to go to 2,3 and sometimes 4th options. AR mainly held the ball either waiting for Adams to get open or waiting for the hero ball pass. I would venture to say that 50% of Rodgers' sacks came as a result of holding on to the ball....including his last one.

OL was solid A-. That minus is Josh Myers. I wish we had a alternative. We could shuffle the deck. We have in the past. But I fear loss of continuity that's crucial up front. So I guess we just hold our breath and hope the kid improves.

We certainly have an alternative, which is to put Zach Tom at C. The entire off season and preseason should have been devoted to that, and then testing who's best at RG. Between Nijman Walker and Jones, RT is not a problem.

Getting Tom to his best at C and the whole line gelling with that change could be. How many weeks did it take last season to make the obvious needed change on OL?

This is painful. At least it's not a problem likely to result in an injury to JL10.

The offensive line performance shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. That is one of the strengths of the Packers. As long as they stay healthy they will get better as the season rolls on.
Yes they have weak links in their line, but nobody in the NFL has all-pros playing in every position in the line. They will get better and the run game will get better as the season progresses. Just the nature of the beast.
I really don't like Jones being out, but at least it's the Falcons they are playing and not the Vikings or Lions.
