To be fair, I think it should be the 1996 Packers vs the 2010 Packers. The 1996 Packers have proved they are the champs. The 2011 team has not really proved anything other then a spotless REGULAR season record.

Lol - Freeman was talking about this squad. I think it would be a great game.

I thought this 2011 team is the defending
Champions. I fail to see where they have anything to prove.
It's all speculation but in my opinion this team would whip the crap out of the 1996 team.

The 2010 champs had Cullen Jenkins, Brandon Jackson and Daryn Collegde - among others. 2011 is a different team.

I do think the 2010 Defense would be a better matchup. That would be like a 24-21 game. If 2011/96 happened, I think the score would be a Madden like 50-48. No clue who'd win, but knowing what I know now about Brent Farkle, I know who I'd be pulling for. :)

2011 secondary would have at least 3-4 picks against that gunslinging QB the '96 team had. Definite special teams edge to the '96 team but which rules are we playing with? The wedge that Desmond Howard would get on KR meant he never got touched until the 30. Overall, I think this 2011 team would still outscore the '96 boys.

Woodson would get 3 picks; but Reggie would get about 5 sacks. Levens gets a big day; how well did 96 LB's do in coverage (Finley)? Special teams returns would be a toss-up, as Cobb isn't bad; but 11 coverage is still suspect. P and K are equal. 11 probably has better Oline, but worse Dline.

I think '96 has a significant ST edge...have we forgotten about SB MVP Desmond Howard?

A great defense usually beats a great offense. At this point, I'd give the nod to 96.
It must really hurt BF that AR is making him easy to forget. I have a feeling that Packer management probably did "dis" him but he came off badly and should never have played for Minn.

Is this game at Lambeau, or in a dome somewhere? The 96 team had a distinct home field advantage and winning streak.
You also have to qualify what injured players are on the roster and do their replacements get to play. Nick Collins is a big factor, and OLs for both teams. Edgar Bennett? Andre Rison?

The consistency of 2011 is what sets it apart. It would allow it to come down to QB play, which I think tips the scale to 2011. In other words, which team would be the first to make the big mistake?

96 would take it. Do you guys remember how vaunted the DLine was? Rodgers wouldn't have spread sets to take advantage of with FB and TEs constantly chipping White and Jones. It'd be screen play vs over the top. 96 wins 24 to 17

The '96 corners were also very physical.

I'll take this years team. I just can't see the 96nteam being able to contain Rogers.
October 28, 2011 at 05:53 pm
Lemme see. I want Rodgers with the game on the line, or Favre?
October 28, 2011 at 06:20 pm
How does 96 cover 5 wide? Case closed.

By Reggie demolishing Bulaga with his "hump" move?

Which will be followed by roughing the passer, 15 yard penalty.
Unless it's 96' rules...

Reggie could "club" any of our current O-lineman silly. Reggie is the reason that team was so special. There was never nor has there been since anything like him in the NFL

Ask me after the Detroit game. I'd like to see how this 11 team develops - and handles the best 4-3 D-line in the league.
October 29, 2011 at 03:33 am
I love our current team but I think both O-line and D-line are better in '96. Desmond Howard would return one for a TD. Favre would throw for 300, 3, 1. Just don't see 2011 beating 1996. Any other year of the favre era though we'd have them. But not '96.
October 29, 2011 at 10:13 am
The 1996 team would win in the trenches and win the game. The only way the current team would win would be to borrow Cowboy uniforms & play in Dallas.

I'm going with 2011 packers simply because I was a booger picking 6 year old brat at the time and never saw them play lol.

Can't you just program some simulation software to give you an answer to this burning question? Or maybe we should consider the SB1 Lombardi Packers vs the Week 1 2011 starters, or maybe the 38 Packers vs today's team, but everyone today needs to play both ways (go Sam Sheilds!).
My recollection of Reggie White is better than yours! It's by week, put your energies to better use like planning your recipes for Packer - Lions TG appitizers.

Packers would win by a point in O.T.

At the end of last season, I would've said the '96 team was definitely better. Now I'm not so sure. I now think that Ted Thompson may very well be a better G.M. than Ron Wolf, Mike McCarthy may be a better coach than Mike Holmgren, and Aaron Rodgers may be a better QB than Brett Favre was, even in his prime. I guess I will still give the edge to the '96 team because the defense was more consistent, but it's close and getting closer.
