Packers Game 5 Recap l Packers 24 Rams 19
The Green Bay Packers bounced back defeating the Los Angeles Rams 24-19 in what was a tale of two halves.
The 100th meeting between the Packers and Rams came down to a dramatic fourth quarter as GB was able to hang on for the win bringing their record to 3-2. Early defensive player of the year candidate S Xavier McKinney had a fumble recovery and another interception picking up the slack with CB Jaire Alexander missing his second straight game. QB Jordan Love went 15/26 throwing for 224 YDS 2 TD and 1 INT while second year TE Tucker Kraft continued to establish himself as an offensive weapon with two touchdowns. In case you missed it, here is the recap:
Packer received the ball to start the game and the first play an incomplete pass by QB Love intended for WR Dontayvion Wicks. After a RB Josh Jacobs 3-yard gain, the GB o-line had the pocket collapse on third down giving up the sack. Packers punted to the GB 25. A couple of short yard gains set up the Rams for third-and-3. QB Matthew Stafford threw an incomplete pass as S Xavier McKinney put a powerful hit on WR Tutu Atwell forcing the punt. Deep in their own territory, Love completed his first pass to WR Malik Heath for a 7-yard gain. On second-and-10 at the GB 34, RB Jacobs picked up an 11-yard gain moving the chains. QB Love on second-and-10 thew a long bomb in triple coverage to WR Jayden Reed (wow) setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by RB Jacobs, his first of the year. K Brayden Narveson made the extra point as GB took the lead 7-0 with 6:45 left in the first quarter.
With WR Puka Nacua and WR Cooper Kupp unable to suit up, QB Stafford and the Rams responded with two straight completions to number one WR Atwell into GB territory. On 4-and-goal from the GB 4, Rams HC Sean McVay made the aggressive decision to go for it as QB Stafford threw another incomplete pass in the end zone causing a turnover-on-downs for the Packers defense. GB handed the ball off to RB Emanuel Wilson in the first two plays of their third drive setting up third-and-2. QB Love threw a dart that was dropped by WR Reed as P Daniel Whelan had to uncomfortably kick from the back of the end zone. A holding penalty on the kick coverage pushed the Rams back to the LA 45 with 1:57 left in the first quarter. The Packers run defense continued to look vulnerable as RB Blake Corum picked up 11 yards on his first handoff of the day. On the final play of the first quarter, Rams ran an RB screen on a GB blitz as RB Corum was tackled short of the first down setting up third-and-3. GB 7 LA 0.
Second Quarter: Packers 7 Rams 0
After stopping RB Corum short of the first down, the Rams went for it again this time succeeding on a RB Williams short gain. CB Keisean Nixon made a timely no-look break up in the end zone guarding WR Demarcus Robinson. However, QB Stafford and the Rams continued to move the chains setting up first-and-goal at the GB 4 after another positive RB Corum run. On third-and-goal at the GB 1, RB Williams leaped into the end zone for the touchdown. K Joshu Karty made the extra point bringing the score to GB 7 LA 7 with 9:47 left in the second quarter.
Packers started the drive with an incompletion and a RB Jacobs 4-yard loss failing to create a rhythm. On third-and-long, QB Love completed a 5-yard pass to TE Tucker Kraft as the Packers offense had another three-and-out. P Whelan kicked it 39 yards putting the Rams at the GB 30. On second-and-10, QB Stafford completed a 16-yard pass to WR Robinson with CB Nixon on the soft coverage. Rams had 20 plays in enemy territory at this point compared to the Packers who only had one. The GB run defense finally had a negative stop as LB Quay Walker was there for the tackle on a 6-yard loss. On third-and-16, GB Rookie Edgerin Cooper hung on tightly to QB Stafford’s jersey swinging him down for the 10-yard sack and knocking LA out of field goal range forcing the punt.
Starting from their own 10, QB Love hit WR Reed for the 3-yard gain for only their fourth play of the second quarter with 3:06 remaining. The GB offense continued to look out-of-sync after a false start pushed them back to the 7. On his 761st career pass attempt, QB Love got hit in the back of the end zone making an off-balanced ill-advised throw that was intercepted by S Jaylen McCollough for Love’s first career pick 6. K Karty missed the extra point making the score LA 13 GB 7 with 2:02 left in the second quarter. After the two minute warning on third-and-4, QB Love quickly hiked the ball getting LA for a 12 men on the field penalty giving GB the first down. On second-and-3, QB Love found WR Reed wide open over-over-middle for an 18-yard gain before getting tackled at the LA 22. QB Love threw a backwards pass intended for WR Reed setting up a third-and-26 with 21 seconds left. GB picked up 11 yards on a pass to WR Wicks using their final timeout with two seconds left. K Narveson attempted a 46-yard field goal successfully making it as time expired concluding a disastrous second quarter. LA 13 GB 10.
Third Quarter: Rams 13 Packers 10
GB only had 11 yards rushing in the first half. Rams received the ball to start the second half. On third-and-1, Stafford completed a 31-yard pass to rookie WR Jordan Whittington for their longest play of the day. On second-and-7 at the GB 27, RB Williams got the ball punched out of his hands by LB Kingsley Enagbare and was recovered by S McKinney forcing the fumble turnover. This was GB league leading 12th turnover of the season. The Packers offense responded with a 66-yard touchdown pass on their second play to TE Kraft, who had a huge stiff-arm propelling himself into the end zone. K Narveson made the extra point giving the Packers the lead GB 17 LA 13 with 11:15 left in the third quarter.
QB Stafford took a hard hit launching an incompletion broken up by rookie S Williams, who made his presence felt through out the game. LA picked up the first down on a 6-yard completion to TE Parkinson. On third-and-10 at the GB 48, QB Stafford threw a long bomb picked off by (who else) S McKinney for his fifth consecutive game with an interception returning it 30 yards to the GB 48. McKinney became the first GB player with five interceptions in his first five games in the franchise's 105 year history. The Packers first play after the turnover was an 11-yard run by WR Reed. QB Love set up RB Jacobs for a screen play picking up 21 yards to the LA red zone. On second-and-goal at the LA 7, QB Love completed a short pass to TE Kraft who made the extra reaching effort for the touchdown (original call was short but replay assist overturned the call). K Narveson made the extra point increasing the lead to GB 24 LA 13 with 3:55 left in the third quarter.
On first-and-10 at the LA 42, QB Stafford overthrew his target and the ball was almost picked off again by S McKinney. GB defense was able to read a quick throw as rookie LB Edgerrin Copper made the tackle for a 5-yard loss. The final play of the third quarter was a 9-yard completion to TE Hunter Long with score being GB 24 LA 13.
Fourth Quarter: Packers 24 Rams 13
DE Karl Brooks was able to sack QB Stafford for an 8-yard loss forcing the Rams to punt. Since the INT, QB Love was 7/7 141 YDS and two TD. QB Love completed his eighth straight throw to WR Wicks for 10 yards and a first down. GB was 0/5 on third downs for the day until QB Love scrambled 12 yards for a clutch first down. On third-and-5 at the LA 42, the Rams jumped before the ball was snap for a neutral zone infraction giving GB the first down. After a rare false start penalty by C Zach Tom and a dropped pass by WR Wicks, GB found themselves at third-and-15 as the swarming LA defense stopped an RB screen to Wilson for a 9-yard loss. Packers punted to the LA 9-yard line with 6:02 left in the fourth quarter.
LA was in desperation mode with the hurry up offense as QB Stafford completed back-to-back 17-yard passes to WR Whittington. QB Stafford completed his sixth pass in a row to WR Atwell followed by a 6-yard gain by RB Williams setting up first-and-goal. Packers CB Carrington Valentine was called for a defensive pass interference in the end zone setting up a 1-yard touchdown throw to WR Robinson. LA failed to complete the two point conversion with a clutch tackle made by CB Valentine keeping the score GB 24 LA 19 with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter.
With LA still having all three timeouts, GB handed the ball to RB Jacobs for a 13-yard gain forcing the Rams to use their first. GB chose to throw on first down which resulted in an incompletion intended for WR Heath as the balled was batted down at the line. On third-and-10, QB Love threw a catchable pass to WR Wicks that went through his hands. P Whelan punted the ball only 28-yards to the LA 29. On third-and-1, RB Williams picked up a first down with a huge hole as LB Isaiah McDuffie came up with the tackle preventing a big gain. On third-and-10, QB Stafford found TE Parkinson for a 9-yard gain setting up fourth-and-1 at the GB 46 as the clock hit the two minute warning. RB Williams picked up the first down as the clock continued to run. On second-and-5, GB brought pressure as DT Preston Smith was able sack QB Stafford for a 7-yard loss. On fourth-and-5, GB was able to pressure QB Stafford on his throw to TE Parkinson as the play was broken up by S Williams securing the victory. By quite a few statistical measures, we lost this game, but we won the turnover battle, and that's always helpful. The throw by Love that was picked....this is starting to look like a pattern to me. He's not being as careful with the ball as he needs to be, or even as careful as he was during the second half of last season. It was the biggest play of this game, and if the Packers had just taken the safety there it still saves them 4 points. Final score, GB 24, LA, 15.
Never, at any point in this game, even after that foolish pick six, did I think the Packers were in danger of losing the game.

I was nervous during Rams last drive as they were moving the ball. Thankfully, we were up by 5 and not 3. Well at least I don't have to clip my finger and toe nails.

Unimpressive win. When will GB invest in a Defensive Line? I didn't see one today.
Stupid penalties again set up poor down and distance and GB not good enough to make those up.
Rams were pretty handicapped at their WR corps, so we would expect Rams to Run. Could GB stop that run? Um, no. Rams the ball pretty affectively, as I said...being that there was no lineman they had to worry about. There were a few green and gold pawns clogging up just a few of the squares, but behold, the wiley bishops and knights of LA could slide right through. Rams of 5, 8, 7 yards. Rams could rely on converting most of the 3rd down by running.
The good news....Xavier McKinney. Bravo, Gutekunst. Giants did whaaah, did they do? Let him go?

Love's poor decision making in the first half made this one closer than it should have been. The defense gave up a lot of yards, but got some turnovers.
The defense does seem like an upgrade due to the simple fact that it has held late 4th quarter leads.
Seems like a C+ team right now. Too many mental mistakes. If they remove those unforced errors and take care of the ball, then they have something.

This defense, so far, is depending way too much on getting turnovers. McKinney has held up his end of the bargain and appears to be the league leader as - defensive free agent signing of the year. Good on him. Five games in and he has four legit interceptions and one gifted.
The defensive front just plain isn't getting it done. Maybe the switch to a primarily 4/3 with 3/4 body types isn't getting it done but jeez, get some damn three and outs. Get some pressure at the line and dominate the LOS. That ain't happening.
Wicks. Go get intimate with the Jugs machine. Get as many reps as you can, then get more. Some of those balls are right on the dick beaters. No excuse for not hands catching and plucking those balls right in. This was a day to show how you could be, the man.

The Packers' victory over the Rams showcased resilience, particularly from Jordan Love and the defense, despite the offensive struggles. It's exciting to see how they adapt under pressure, similar to crafting a strategy in Retro bowl, where every decision counts! Looking forward to their next matchup!

Just got through watching the Steelers game. Every time I see Watt on the end...and with his 100th sack I wanna kick a GM in the butt.
So far zero pass rush from the packers...Engabare does punch out the ball though. Can we teach something other than a lame bull rush technique. I would like an infusion of talent to the front 4...and CB group. #7 needs to be sitting more. Wicks has stone hands too often. Reeds catch was ridiculous and into triple coverage???? We need another good TE along side Kraft and Musgrave is not it.
