Packers Facing Major Decisions at Wide Receiver
What's next for pass catchers when the 2025 campaign comes to an end?
By GregMeinholz

The Green Bay Packers have often had an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position. Over the last 30 years, alongside stellar quarterback play, the team has had some great receiving corps. That's not to say each receiver has been an all-pro talent, but when you have more than 2-3 receivers who can be a threat to make plays or have a big game in any given week, that's a pretty good group of pass catchers.
But a problem that comes with a group of pass catchers that good is that when it comes time for contract renewals, you can rarely pay them all. That third, fourth, or even fifth receiver on your roster could be a 2 or 3 on another roster, and another team will pay them to be that. That means your team is faced with some difficult roster decisions and you're going to have to cut one, if not more of them loose, and try to continue your pass-catching success with more affordable replacements.
The Packers will be facing those decisions in the next two years with their current receiving corps. Romeo Doubs' contract expires at the end of this season, along with Bo Melton, while Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Dontayvion Wicks' deals expire after next season. Likely, 2-3 of those receivers will not be on the Packers' roster entering the 2027 season. You could make a case for extending all five of them, but that's not feasible in today's NFL.
Let's take a look at all seven receivers on the roster for what the future may hold for them, given the roster decisions on the horizon:
Christian Watson - exp 2026
My my my, how the turn tables. Sorry, I had to get that Michael Scott quote from "The Office" in there somehow. You all know what I mean. Anyway, I seem to remember some of the more pessimistic Packers fans wanting Christian Watson released following his ACL injury. First of all, that's absurd in its own right. Second, I hope those of you who felt that way have learned your lesson, as Watson has made every case possible for being the Packers' number 1 receiver.
We would have been looking into Christian Watson needing to be extended by March, or risk losing him, but Brian Gutekunst made a smart decision in tacking on an additional year to Watson's contract before he even returned from his injury. That way, the Packers essentially have an entire year to negotiate a new deal with him. After Watson has had probably the best year of his career in only 10 games so far, his agent will likely be at the negotiation table this offseason. I think the Packers will likely lock Christian Watson in for a few more seasons.
Romeo Doubs - exp 2025
Romeo Doubs has been the most sure-handed receiver on the Packers' roster. Statistically, 2025 has been one of the best seasons of Doubs' career. Romeo also seems to be in a better place mentally compared to last year.
If not for Christian Watson returning with a vengeance, I'd say Romeo Doubs would be re-signed by the Packers after this season. But the Packers aren't going to pay them both, and it's likely Doubs will retrieve a pretty penny on the open market. I think this is Romeo's final year in Green and Gold.
Jayden Reed - exp 2026
The Packers were expected to lean on Jayden Reed in 2025, with Christian Watson being absent half the season. But as fate would have it, Reed went down with an injury in week 2 and didn't return until Thanksgiving. Since returning from injury, he's had decent production, but no game yet that has really jumped off the page.
With Reed's contract not expiring until 2026, the Packers have plenty of time to extend him, much like Christian Watson. 2025 didn't do him any favors in securing a big contract extension, though. I would imagine the Packers will explore re-signing Jayden Reed this offseason, but there could be some back and forth for a while on terms.

Dontayvion Wicks - exp 2026
Overall, Dontayvion Wicks has had a pretty decent 2025 season. He's missed two games due to injury, and, arguably, injury has hampered him in other games. But his 6 catch, 94-yard, two-touchdown performance on Thanksgiving showed off his ability to put up numbers when needed.
Unless Wicks puts up a dominant 2026 performance, I believe he'll fall victim to the salary cap after next year. Especially if both Christian Watson and Jayden Reed are extended. He could likely get a large paycheck as a third receiver option elsewhere, but it likely won't be Green Bay.
Matthew Golden - exp 2028/29
Matthew Golden's case has been very perplexing this season. All offseason and training camp, we heard about Golden being wise beyond his rookie status. We heard that he's such a talented receiver, and then we saw it on the practice field. But then the regular season came, and outside a few catches here and there, he hasn't been very productive. What's perplexing about this is that there doesn't really seem to be a rhyme or reason. When we look back on the film, we see Golden running good routes and getting open; the looks just aren't there.
With Matthew Golden being a rookie, especially a first-round pick, we don't have to worry about his contract for a while. His lack of production, though, raises eyebrows. As Packer fans, we're used to rookie receivers taking time to develop. But a first-round pick that appears to have the talent and knowledge still "developing" in week 18? It's kind of strange. Matthew Golden's future may fully impact that of Dontayvion Wicks. If Golden is still lacking production next year, Wicks may earn a short extension.
Savion Williams - exp 2028
I'd really like to see Savion Williams used as a receiver more than a few snaps a game. I'm sure right now he's a bit of a victim of a crowded room, but like Matthew Golden, he's a player that the team invested prime draft capital in, but they've rarely used. Injuries have held him back a bit, yes, but when he's been healthy, he's never been used for much more than jet sweeps.
Like Golden, we have lots of time with Williams, and he could be one of the best receivers on the team in two years. Also, like Golden, I believe his growth will impact the retention of the rest of the room.
Bo Melton - exp 2025
Bo Melton started out the 2025 season, possibly transitioning to the cornerback position. We have seen him much more at WR than CB in 2025. He's had a decent season considering his snap count on offense, but nothing that really jumps out.
The transition to CB was a move that Bo Melton likely made to set himself apart when it came to making the final roster back in camp. Injuries at WR early in the season kept him around, and when Jayden Reed returned to the lineup, Melton's versatility likely gave him the nod over WR Malik Heath. Unless the Packers believe in Melton's move to CB or find value in bringing him back to compete for a bottom of the depth chart role, I would imagine this is Bo Melton's last season as a Packer.
The final game of the regular season and the playoffs may be a big indicator of which receivers will be heavily featured in 2026. If top receivers like Watson, Doubs, and Reed are held out, hopefully, we will see a heavy dose of Matthew Golden or Savion Williams. Those who may be on the cusp of free agency, like Doubs, could also turn things around with a huge playoff performance. The Packers are in a good place with plenty of talent in the wide receivers' room. Now we'll have to see which players set themselves apart to continue in a Packers uniform down the road.

I don't think this is hard. They've invested in WR ahead of the upcoming churn at the position. They really don't have much choice but to let Doubs go and shore up with a day 3 pick. Melton is almost a vet minimum player at the bottom of the WR and DB rooms and mostly a STs player. He's not likely to command much $$ if they decide they want him to stay.
As of right now, the Packers are projected to be about $15M under the cap in '26. If Jenkins is let go like many expect, that adds $20M to the cap. Letting Nate Hobbs go before his roster bonus guarantees will help save about $8M. If Jenkins goes, they really can't afford to cut Banks, but there's about $4M in cap savings if he's released--more if it's post June 1. There are likely to be other contract/roster changes made that massage more cap space ahead of signing returning players. In the end, there will be some room to add mid-level FAs and depth to some key positions, especially given that many of those contracts will be lower on guarantees and the bigger hits (unlikely to be realized) may be 3-4 years out.

They only need to draft/ or get a

He'll sign Wyatt regardless of injuries.

Am I way off to think a strictly run-stuffing DT also doesn’t warrant a 1st or 2nd round pick?

I'm told no Nate Hobbs next season = $1MM less against the cap. He's surely worth that but for 8 it's shaky

AI is saying $4M. Sporttrac says $1M, but he has a roster bonus that doesn't guarantee until next league year worth $6.8M. Whatever the case, I think even if Diggs is around, next year, they need two new CBs in the draft.

Agree 100%. This OL needs a huge input of talent. Walker is gone. Rhyan has shown that he's no starter...anywhere on the line. I'm close to declaring Morgan a bust (another reason to fire Gutekunst). Banks is mediocre at best. We've probably got an OL that ranks in the bottom half of the league.

It is feasible to sign them all.
The 10 mil. mark was set for MVS and Lazard.
This is the next Raid on the packers team.
And the way they all have been injury prone.
Sign them all! Comp pick if they don't.
The top WRS make 40 mil yearly now.
(This is the cap number for the wrs.)
Especially for 2026.

What major decisions?
WR is one of the deepest and easiest positions to foresee ... in 2026.
Doubs is gone and Golden replaces him in the rotation.
You then have Reed, Watson, Wicks, Golden, and Williams as WRs 1-5. Cornerback Bo Melton is always available in a pinch.
At some point, barring injury, Reed and Watson will get extended and Wicks will play elsewhere in 2027.
Now do Cornerback or Defensive Tackle. Those are the 2 horror show positions in Green Bay.

Yep. WR looks pretty straightforward as KenEllis says. Watson/Reed/Golden/Wicks/Williams.
.....and yes, a good run-stuffing DT is needed, but the next draft is very thin here.
At least one more CB is needed to go with Stefon Diggs (assuming Diggs is retained after the playoffs, which he may not be).
We need a good run blocking TE too (nothing much there in the next draft, it's all pass catchers who can't block, this year).
So, while the 2026 draft should throw up a CB and a couple of O linemen for us, getting the right DT and TE might prove challenging.

They don't face any major decisions at WR until after the 2026 season. By modern standards, that qualifies as being stable at the position.
I'm less certain than the author that the Packers have a glut of talent at WR. They have several talented players, but no alpha dogs, unless you count Christian Watson, who is just starting to look like that kind of player but can't be counted on because of his extensive injury history. That's why I was in favor of them drafting Matthew Golden in the first round. His lack of production as a rookie has been disappointing, whether it's his own fault or he is not being used in the best way.
I'm hoping for big things from Golden next year. With Romeo Doubs almost certainly gone, they might actually have more clarity at WR--unless they have another rash of injuries. Wicks has been banged up all season, including most of training camp, and only has 30 catches for 332 yards and two TDs. It's sad that once again not a single Packer WR has been able to piece together a highly productive season. But with better luck, it could happen next year for Watson, Reed, Golden, or maybe even Wicks.

Put Golden on the Rams this year he’d probably lead the league in rookie WRs….

Choosing #0 is where it all went wrong for him. It's such a dumb-looking number. I actually liked #22, and a typical WR number in the eighties or teens would've been fine as well. But that zero is pretentious and ugly. I hope he learned his lesson and chooses a better number next year. (Unless he goes wild in the playoffs and justifies the zero.)

My .02: buying him just as a rental this season seems sketchy, but to have him here through at least next season? I like it. I'm not sure that the concept of a "bridge" player is ever used for this position, but I'll schlock this one up anyway; if Gutey can draft enough talent that we don't need Diggs, fine. If he can't, or it takes a season or two for them to develop, that also works. Gotta get that room functional somehow ...

He has hefty cash values ($16M in '26, then two seasons over $20M) over the remainder of his deal, but no guaranteed money so he costs nothing to cut. Those cash values could easily be banked by moving some of the money to guarantees if they like what he brings. Hafley likes to play zone, and Diggs is a press-man type--but I agree in that doesn't mean that the Packers won't have a place for him. It could be that if Hafley is hired away, the next DC might be more suitable for him.
Reports are he was struggling in Matt Eberflus' zone-heavy defense and he does have a track record of being high strung, but with Hobbs and Hadden both likely done for the year, the third CB right now is Bo Melton. This should be a clear upgrade. I'd suit him up for Minnesota and see how he does.
Packers get the first shot. Hell, maybe they find a taker in trade.

Not disagreeing with any of that, but I think we are also looking at a guy who hasn’t been the same since his knee went. He’s not as athletic at the moment and his style of play relied on that: aggressive, lengthy corner. Like you, I doubt the fit with Hafley, but to succeed, Hafley is going to have to adapt to Valentine and Diggs given that he doesn’t have any options (Melton is closer to the cover corner type too) and they don’t play his desired zone well. One can’t force that many square pegs into round holes successfully.

Recievers coming out of college are generally more NFL ready than in the past. College passing attacks are more advanced than they used to be. You can find good, young talent in the mid rounds (Nacua, St. Brown come to mind).
GB had a difficult time with injuries to the WR corps this year. Every one of them missed some games.
They have enough depth to field an above average group if Doubs leaves.

The big question is who steps into the Doubs role? Watson and Reed should be 2 of the three main WRs. Golden is going to need to add muscle and block a great deal better if it’s to be him.

Can we stop the doubs most sure handed packers WR commentary? It’s just not factual. Not only does he have a high drop rate every year and has the most drops on this team over the years, but you got the onside kick debacle and that he’s just not an efficient player to target. More things point to him having the worst hands of WRs rather than the best. He’s an easy choice to move on from when you have 5 cheap quality WRs under contract already, and you get the comp pick by him going.

“The Green Bay Packers have often had an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position.” Really?
The only time I remember having an embarrassment of riches at the wide receiver position was the last SB victory over the Steelers. Driver, Jones, Jennings and Nelson.
Steelers had an amazing group of WR’s that year too.
Packers GM’s of past and present failed 4 & 12 by not surrounding them with weapons and giving them the time to use them.
It’s still hard to believe each only won one SB.

Here's something to remember about Watson: no one questioned his ability. I questioned whether he had the body to hold up to the beating in the NFL. He's played very well since his return. He's not playing 'scared', rather with confidence. Greg, do the Packers NEED to have a receiver designated as #1? Remember the 'Smurfs' in Miami:? Who was #1 there? They were all good.
Doubs has the ability but I wouldn't keep him around.
Reed has lots of ability, often injured, I wonder if he's trade bait?
Wicks is also often injured but has good hands.
Williams needs to learn the NFL game. This ain't college any more dude.
Melton is too versatile to let go but he could be picked up as a free agent.
and finally, Golden. Never forget there's only one football. Tucker Kraft also factors into this, along with giving carries to Josh Jacobs. It's a bit early to get down of Golden. He has hands of 'gold' when the ball is thrown his way. He is the future for the Packers. Part of the issue is he hasn't grown familiarity yet with Jordan Love. He will.
The five that will likely be on the team next year will be Watson, Golden, Williams, Reed and Wicks with Melton likely working defense along with offense unless he gets a whopper of an offer elsewhere. He looks like a player the Vikings or Bears would sign.
