Packers Draft Special: Packers Big Board 2.0
By Ross Uglem
The Packers own six selections in the top 118 in the draft. This is a key draft, now more than ever, as the Packers are a bit limited in what they can do financially until 2021. That's the case becuase Green Bay signed four starters on the second day of free agency.
Green Bay's true needs, as in a player they absolutely need to add moving into the season are truly down to one position. Safety. It is very likely that the Packres need to address the safety position and find someone who can at least compete to start across from Adrian Amos. Kentrell Brice is gone, Tramon Williams is supposedly a corner and Josh Jones just might be a linebacker. If they're not going to go with Raven Greene, they're going to need someone who can run back there.
Outside of safety, though, there are avenues for each position to be just fine, whether through the development of prior draft picks or due to the additions from the offseason spending spree. What we're going to do here (for the final time) is to create a top 125. This will create a list of prospects that should be available inside Green Bay's six picks in the top 118. This list is literally who I would take at #12 into perpituity. If everyone in front of a player is gone, I'd take that player. This is, of course, based on my opinion of the player(s) and the roster needs of the Packers. Once they select someone and "fulfill a need", things can be shifted but this is as the roster sits here on April 12th. We'll include Relative Athletic Scores.

Why do I get the feeling, Burns is Reynolds 2.0. My first post but avid reader.

I don’t know. Why do you get that feeling? Do you know something about Burns that we don’t know?

Because you are only basing your view on the fact that they are both edge rushers who went to the same school. Any amount of film study would show you they are two completely different players.

Only in bust potential. I like Burns at 30 is worth the risk if he makes it that far but certainly not at 12.

Wow this board rates Burns way higher than some other boards I have seen. Example Daniel Jeremiah NFL network has him at #36. Ranking him at #3 is a huge difference. I guess we will have to see how teams actually have him ranked. Exactly what makes this a crap shoot.

This board overvalues edge rushers.

Take a look around the NFL... Just how many pass rushers from Florida St. who were successful in school but not so much in the NFL. This is a list of the Top 10 sack artists from Florida St. Remember #5?
1) Reinard Wilson
35.5
2) Peter Boulware
34.0
3) DeMarcus Walker
28.5
4) Ron Simmons
25.0
5) Jamal Reynolds
23.5
6) Björn Werner
23.5
7) Andre Wadsworth
23.0
8) Alonzo Jackson
23.0
9) Everette Brown
23.0
10) Brandon Jenkins
22.5
I get the same feeling you do.

Excellent research, Nick! I agree -- the lack of FSU pass rushers succeeding in the NFL is more than just paranoia or emotion from Jamal Reynolds burning us 18 years ago. There is merit to this argument.

Some people overvalue edge rushers. Jamal "Too Small" Reynolds is a case in point. Getting around the edge against some 21 year old who's going to be teaching PE in a few years is one thing; getting around NFL tackles is another.
Look at the top edge rushers in this draft and look at their gamelogs and in the games where they had 0 sacks, look at who they were up against. Because that's who they're going against every week in the NFL.

Not a single QB in the top 50. I guess that Rodgers is going to play every game and we don't need a backup who can win a game in the NFL.
I've thought for a while we might get a shot at White, and if he's on the board at #12, he'd be my guy. If White's not there, I wouldn't mind trading down.
All along I've thought we should take the safety at #30. I like Abrams, who you have in the 50s but I've generally seen him going higher. In my book, he's the #1 safety in this draft.
In the 2nd round, if we're taking an OT, I'd be very happy with Cajuste.
So.....a potential Pro Bowler at ILB, the #1 safety in the draft, and a top OT. I'd be satisfied with that.

QB...NO. If the packers were a few players away from a confident Super Bowl run then maybe. We don't know what this team is going to be like yet. If they only have 8 wins this year with AR then what would be the point of spending the resources on a backup QB warming the bench? Right now they are still a bad team until proven otherwise.

Old School I gave you a Like. The point of a QB is logical. Especially after two collar bone breaks. And how many are going to go in the top ten. Abram will be a good player. I like Thornhill. Both could be selected as far as I'm concerned. White ,Abrams and Cajuste are logical. It could happen.

I would look at Grier and Stidhem in the second , maybe one drops to third round. They have a body of work and can read more than one receiver.
One Old School scout stated Grubb is miles ahead of these Edge people and half would be second round rated guys in 2018's draft. I would look for the Big Boys to protect Rodgers and get some wide bodies to stop the run.

Greg Cosell has named Jace Sternberger as his "under the radar" player who is going to exceed expectations by a large margin. He compared him to Travis Kelce, high praise indeed. source: Interview Thursday morning on "Schein on Sports", Mad Dog Radio.

Packers brought him in for a pre-draft visit too. The hype around Hockenson is a little too rich for me.

I love your board, and your draft guide work.
It;s just not for me. If there is consensus, I would like to see it.
I'm one of those (lazy in NFL draft prep) that have no idea what the Pack's draft board looks like, and that hidden board is all that matters.
It;s the board that gave us an extra 1st round pick this year.
We just have to trust it.

Same for me 4thand1. DT is a bigger need than we realize. Daniels getting a 3rd contract is going to be iffy at best.
For all we know, the Packers may already have their minds made up about letting Daniels hit free agency in 2020. Paying the 23 yr old Kenny Clark will be the priority, not Daniels, who turns 30 in May.

April 13, 2019 at 09:01 am
Same thing is true of OL: Bulaga's contract is up after 2019. Bakhtiari, Taylor (who is replaceable now IMO, and would save the Packers about $3M in cap space if cut), and Linsley are all up after 2020.
Rossonero
April 13, 2019 at 12:12 pm

April 13, 2019 at 11:13 pm
We need to draft many Dline and Oline. We will lose Bulaga, Taylor, Daniels, Tramon Williams and possibly Martinez. We can waste picks on a QB or RB. In 2020 we will lose a crap ton of players and our cap will be only 25 million tops.

1-13. Logical 14- 19 Reach. 20-29. Never in the first. 30-35. Late first round. I'm going to stop there. Pushing a lot of players down the board is a big mistake. The Vikings will be all over Wilkins. Try #9 to Buffalo! And even if Gary drops. He still better then Winovich. You turned your big board into a Hot sheet. You Loved Polite and Risner. Can't miss were your words. No way Hooker and Savage will be better then Abram. Your board favors Offense! And this is a defensive draft by any expert. Burn It!

Like I said, I am not a draft nick. Here is a small part of the reason, referencing Tony Mandarich ................. "He was drafted in the first round of the 1989 NFL Draft by Green Bay Packers as the second overall pick. He also played for the Indianapolis Colts.
Referred to as "the best offensive line prospect ever",[1] Mandarich was highly touted during his collegiate career at Michigan State, leading to his high selection in the 1989 draft by the Packers.
I just don't have the expertise the Pack does. And they are not infallible.
But I do enjoy watching the "boiling of the waters.

Ross, thank you for all the fine work. It is so helpful to me in forming favorites heading into the draft.
Re ND players: As an alum (way back in the golden 50's), I watched every game this year and differ with your opinion on Julian Love and Drue Tranquill.
Hope I am wrong in both cases, but I will be surprised if Love has the toughness necessary at the NFL level and if Tranquill can stay healthy.

Ross, overall I like your rankings and it aligns really well with mine (I don't put in the time you do btw). A couple of things I wouldn't mind some feedback from the community:
- I don't think DK will be a top five in this class when careers are done.
- I realize that Burns is this years pound the table guy like last year's Landry, but at 12, doesn't make sense.
- I like Christian Wilkens, what am I missing here?
- N'Keal Harry will most likely have a better career than DK
- I have McGary higher in the OL rankings.
One last thing, I am once again confused about your QB rankings. Last year Josh Allen was last at 150 our of 150 and this year and this year Drew Lock is a dog. I personally love big armed mobile QBs that remind me of Brett Favre. (I do like Easton for a late round pick for us.)
Thanks for your contributions.

Nice work Ross
This won’t be popular but I would trade 12th and 44th to move up and get Josh Allen and take Daniel Jones at 30 and a offensive lineman next and then a safety
Ross Uglem
April 12, 2019 at 11:16 pm
Taking Daniel Jones is completely nonsensical with the Rodgers contract, plain and simple.

Keeping 2 backup QB’S that can’t win a game is NONSENSICAL especially with Rodgers injury proneness

Rodgers is getting paid a lot of money. I think the QB contingency plan is already on the roster, for better or worse. If the amount of years left on the deal all play out, we won't see your 2019 1St rd QB play on his rookie contract. In Rodgers we trust.
Ross Uglem
April 13, 2019 at 08:16 am
they aren’t even close to the same situation. The way the CBA works now you want the quarterback on the rookie contract PLAYING, not sitting. 7 of the last 10 non-Patriots Super Bowl teams had QBs on rookie contracts, including the Rams this year.
You don’t draft a QB to sit for three or four years any more and you can’t get out of Rodgers’ deal until 2023.
Taking a 1st round QB is a VERY poorly constructed idea.

April 13, 2019 at 08:29 am
And yet, teams who have replaced aging veterans with 1st round QBs have done very well in turning things around the last couple of years, haven't they?
At some point in time, Rodgers isn't going to be able to play. It could happen in the opener or at any point beyond it. He could miss a couple of snaps, a couple of games, or the rest of the season. We do not have a legitimate NFL QB on the roster behind him.
Joe Flacco won a Super Bowl more recently than Rodgers, and he was replaced last year by a rookie. Mahomes supplanted Alex Smith. Given that you don't win in this league without a QB, I'd surely be trying to make that position stronger.

In the end, the issue here is ARod's contract, its impact on the cap, and what it means to roster management. If anything, it shows that this team is committed to milking #12 for at least one more trip to the big game before he goes. They've paid him handsomely, and they've burned a tremendous amount of cap space on defensive players who are young and durable. It would be inconsistent with this current MO to burn a day 1 (or maybe even day 2) pick on a QB instead of other players who can prop up the team (and QB1) right now.

April 13, 2019 at 09:36 am
Yes and you deal with it when the starters contract allows it. Like Flacco’s did. The dead money was to the point where Baltimore could get out of it. The Packers aren’t even close.
You have to pay attention to contract structure. This is not madden. It’s both a bad idea because Jones isn’t good and a bad idea because it’s not practical and would completely destroy the teams cap.

April 13, 2019 at 09:44 am
What you are consistently failing to understand is that if they take Jones, a bad quarterback, and replace Rodgers, the highest rated QB of all time, mostly based on a timeline of replacing Brett Favre that is nonsensical for a number of reasons, the Packers would have $59 million against the cap in 2020 paying Rodgers to play somewhere else and they’d have to pay Jones.
Might as well just not play the games.

You don't let the Inmates run the asylum. Kizer was swapped for Randall , so Gutekunst owns that deal. Maybe Mccarthy wanted him onboard and DaMarious gone for "locker room chemistry? I think Gutey knows he made the wrong move and will rectify the situation. Rodgers is committed to his deal for a reason. QBs with premier talent play longer in today's game.
If they bagged a guy in the fourth or fifth that is better than the dynamic duo of Kizer-Boyle , go for it. Let's watch it unfold on day three of the draft.

Albert gave you an up vote!
Had just read the mock draft out there with the Pack taking Jones at 30. Never saw anyone mocking a QB at 30 before. If Jones was there at 30 I certainly wouldn't be upset depending who else was available. I really like Simmons at 30, or for Pack to move up in round 2 to get him.
My preference.... Oliver is my overall preference at 12, otherwise drop back a few selections and take Fant. Then Simmons at 30 (or best available OT, or ILB) then Simmons high in round 2. Would make me very happy!
Think I can pretty much say I am going to be happy with whomever Gute selects because much more comfortable with what he is doing than I was with TT in later years. Loved what Gute did last year!

No ......I didn't know there was a mock with him?
I just like him and he would learn a lot behind AR and I think he’s better than either back up we have know
Your preference mock better also pray Rodgers doesn’t get hurt

Even if the Packers drafted Jones I would still hope/pray Rodgers doesn't get hurt. The argument isn't for an immediate backup for Rodgers with a draft choice. It's about grooming the future QB for once Rodger's contract is up the way we did with Rodgers behind Farve.
albert999
April 13, 2019 at 12:54 am
i’m not arguing
We don’t have a good back up period so why not get one now start grooming and if he needs to go in and win I believe he can
God forbid something happens

The queens rotate a veteran backup every year and seem to cover their bases. I Liked Siemien last year on an easy trade with Elway, but Pack made the Kizer deal. This year they pull in Mannion, who is familiar with the McVay offense. The Packers devotion to UDFA and semi-talented QBs is perplexing.

Its a Green Bay tradition dating back to the Arnie Herber Cecil Isbell days.
Carried forward with Bart Starr, Babe Parilli and Don Horn.
Doug Pederson anyone?

Albert,
I had literally just read that mock draft with Jones at 30 right prior to reading your post and why I assumed you had read it too. The mock caught me by surprise as nobody has mocked a QB at 30 and as I thought about I am like if Jones was there it probably would be a good selection.
Ross Uglem
April 13, 2019 at 08:18 am
it would be a bad selection because of a number of reasons, most importantly that Jones isn’t good.

Realistically I bet we trade down from 12 to the range of 17, because I think Oliver will be gone and it is too high for a TE or off-ball LB there. That would net an extra third. At 17 you’d feel better about Fant, Hock or O-Line like maybe Dillard. Take either Adderley or Thornhill at 30. Go back to O-Line at 44 or take a chance on Simmons. I’d double down and take Hooker in the third and a RB after that.
Adderley and Thornhill can and have played corner and Hooker also runs 4.55. They can all man up in the slot or play single-high. Our defense could put real speed into all packages, we protect ourselves for when we lose Bulaga and Graham. If we ended up with Simmons at 44 we protect ourselves from losing Daniels.
It aint sexy, but it could happen.

If Oliver or Sweat are not there @ #12 I would prefer the trade down scenario. Takes two to Tango. If Elway takes Lock, who does Washington target? Assuming Gettleman takes Haskins. Keenum can manage the offense for a year. Are they willing to swap a three and go up to #12 for Jones ?

If people like the Duke guy and/or Haskins..... 12 could be THE goldmine spot. Get ahead of Miami amd Washington..... I doubt Denver goes QB..... Man would that be something if there was a bidding war for 12

With a passive but aggressive approch. Great thread ! Cali .

Ross, I noticed one thing. Many sources have Damien Harris, Alabama as 2nd, 3rd or at the worst 5th RB. You do not mention him at all.
Is that on purpose or you just missed him?

I wondered about that too. I was thinking exactly of him when I suggested trading down to pick up that extra third. He’d complement what we have for sure.

I did the NFL predict the pick game. Over the last years it's been a way for me to be realistic about who could be available. Was not able to land any of Iowa's TE. Got Brian Burns at 12 and i was not exactly excited about it. I'm a little concerned about his power. Got Simmons at 30. That did put a smile on my face. Again i only mocked 1 QB before the Packers 1st pick, and there was no trade wich is improbable.

I did Predict the Pick as well [NFL dot com game for predicting the order in which the players are selected in the first round]. Much harder than I thought it would be. Trades are subsumed in the game given the rules. It doesn't matter which team takes the players, only if you get the order in which the players are taken correct.
It would be easy to do a CHTV private group. You'd just have to publish the group name and a password here in the comments.

I don’t watch college ball so I have no opinion on these rankings but I do find it interesting that in two consecutive CHTV posts we get “Big Boards” with some huge differences.
For example, Ross has Brian Burns at #3! Daniel Jeremiah has the same guy at #43?
Ross’ top Safety is Juan Thornhill ranked overall 14th best prospect.
Daniel Jeremiah has 4 Safeties in his top 50 ranked prospects and none of them are named Thornhill.
Those two jumped out at me since we all feel that Safety and EDGE are in play for possible Packer's first round picks. I do thank Ross for the input and will be referring to his board (and others) as the draft plays out.

Thornhill is on the top of Pauline's list and Bucky Brooks has Abram. It depends on how {ettine uses Amos. I like Abram for his sideline to sideline cover as a strong safety. Thornhill has the best coverage rating and had a strong combine and limited injury history. I would bag Thornhill as our FS starter who can also cover the dime slot as a CB. High football IQ guy with a proven record of playing the ball. 13 Ints.
