Packers Contracts: Don't Forget Micah Hyde

The Green Bay Packers revealed the nice depth that they have in the defensive backfield during their 17-11 win over the Cleveland Browns on Friday.  We saw some nice things from undrafted rookies Kentrell Brice, Warren Gatewood, Robertson Daniel and Josh Hawkins, to name a few.  Couple that with the continued growth of Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins and the Packers were able to let Casey Hayward leave in free agency and likely without missing a beat.  With a young group, the cornerback and safety positions stand to become of of the most solid on the entire Packers team for a few years to come.

Amidst all of the talk about the offensive linemen whose contracts are up after this season, it has almost been forgotten that Micah Hyde is also going to be looking for a new deal after 2016.  The Packers will have a decision to make regarding Hyde and it's a bit more complicated than just whether or not he's worth the money and roster spot.  On the official depth chart at Packers.com, Hyde is listed as a defensive back, not a cornerback nor a safety.  He's the only such player listed that way.  He is a unique part of the Packers defense and also very valuable on special teams, having returned punts for the past three seasons as well.

Hyde isn't a flashy player, although he has certainly made some big plays during his three seasons.  Here is one that should still be pretty fresh in most Packers fans' minds.  Hyde makes these types of plays by simply being in the right place at the right time.  Last season, Hyde scored interceptions against the St. Louis (now Los Angeles) Rams and Oakland Raiders by staying in his lane and reading the quarterback well.  During his rookie season, Hyde nearly became the hero of the wild card playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers by almost picking off Colin Kaepernick to put the Packers in position to run out the clock and secure a win.  It was a tough catch to make and as we know, almost doesn't count in football, but that play has proven to be Hyde's calling card: a smart player who can be counted on to be where he needs to be.

Yes, Hyde's speed isn't great and has been a liability at times.  He's not a great cover back and doesn't have the speed to run with a Julio Jones type receiver down the sideline.  But when used in the right way, he has proven to be one of the steady presences for the Packers defense.  Hyde has seen time at corner, slot corner, safety and even some linebacker in the dime and nickel packages.  Defensive coordinator Dom Capers has the utmost confidence in the fourth-year man out of Iowa and we should continue to see more of the same this season.

Capers seems to want to move guys around this year, as we're hearing reports that Randall has spent some time at slot corner as well as on the outside and safety Morgan Burnett has taken some snaps at linebacker in some packages.  This can only help someone like Hyde, who has offenses spending more time guessing what he's doing.  Cleveland Browns quarterback Robert Griffin III may have had a tough time doing just that on the Browns' first offensive series.  Driving deeper into Packers territory, Griffin threw a ball over the middle and towards the end zone that was off the mark.  Hyde made a nice driving grab on the ball and scored the interception at the one-yard line.  Just another big play from a player who is as unassuming as any other on the Packers roster.

So what will Hyde's market be and will the Packers be able to keep him?  The first part of that question is uncertain and there's still the 2016 season to be played.  Barring injury, Hyde should bring in anywhere from 2-4 interceptions and, over the last three seasons, has three punt return scores to his credit as well.  He just turned 25 in late December so he's still plenty young.  Despite the nice showing by some of the young cornerbacks mentioned earlier and with guys like LaDarius Gunter up and coming, the Packers would be wise to do everything they can to keep Hyde in Green Bay.  He has what I have referred to before as a diverse toolbox and players like that can easily be undervalued.  He's also well-liked by his teammates and is getting to the point where he can start to help mentor some of the younger players.  What may slide the scales in Green Bay's favor is that he's well-known amongst Packers fans, but isn't a name you typically hear from other NFL fans in conversations about the Packers defense, save for around Iowa.  That could keep his market down and score the Packers a great value.

If his performance against Cleveland is any indication, we're in for another solid campaign from Hyde and further discussion about how he fits into the Packers' future plans.

GB has some tough decisions to make regarding Sitton, Lang, Hyde and they don't get any easier with Bakhtiari's contract coming up, too. The Hayward loss looks like it won't have too much of an impact on the defense and it would've cost a lot of money to retain him- in Ted we trust.

If Spriggs develops and Bulaga stays healthy, I have a hard time seeing Bakhtiari coming back. He may price himself out of GB even if those two things don't happen, given how many contracts are up this year.

I always liked Hyde, even after the San Francisco game. I know a lot of people didn't care for the pick, mostly based on his 40 time. If you look at his combine scores he did as well or better than Darius Slay for example in just about every event. And Slay is considered one of the better up and coming CB in the NFL. Not sure what that's worth except for those that put a lot into a players combine. He also won the Tatum-Woodson Award as the Big Ten DB of the year in 2012.

Hyde is a "Football Player". He might not be Great at any one thing, but he's good at everything. He's steady, available, and keeps his nose clean. Seems nowadays it's hard to get even 2 out 3 of those qualities from players coming out. Wouldn't be surprised if he's signed to an extension before the season ends, especially if Ted can get it done for what might look like a "Bargain". Lots of FA next season though so should be interesting. He just seems like the type of player Ted would want to keep.

It's year 4. No one cares a thing about the combine at this point. Using those raw stats and comparing to other good players is silly now.

He's not good at everything. He cannot cover. He had a brutal pass interference penalty, against a TE, but he was lucky the pass was poorly thrown. For some reason Hyde is the type of guy that we tend to forget those plays and remember the point returns.

Hyde is just not a good DB. He's also not a bad one. He's ordinary.

He turned it to provid very nice rate of return for a 4th rounder. I'll take that and move on.

He's the kind of player that will not be missed if he gets decent offers from other teams.

Damn it, @gr

I want to disagree and agree with so much stuff here.

Good job.

I don't think Hyde n=eds to be re-signed, perhaps only if he doesn't get much interest elsewhere and the price is right. Given his sub-par speed & less than great coverage, particularly against tight ends & fast receivers, I don't think his skills are too difficult to replace with a rookie like Brice. Besides, there are a lot of expiring contracts in 2017 & beyond to consider.

This!

It's telling that you mention his inability to even cover TEs.

He's better than replacement level, but he's not a good DB.

He was a solid Packer; hope we get a good year out of him. Good luck to him.

Sure he's had problems covering in some games, others he's done an excellent job. He's a solid tackler, something several Packers aren't known as being. Hyde has a place on this Defense and it's doubtful the Packers would have to break the bank to sign him. I think there's little doubt we get a Solid Year out of him, and keep him. He's exactly the type of player Thompson loves to keep.

He sure made a nice play on the INT vs Cleveland. By now GB knows exactly what they have in him, and Dom seems to know how to use him.
As usual, I'm not worried about what's going to happen; I'll just sit back, watch, and enjoy the ride.

"doesn't have the speed to run with a Julio Jones type receiver...."

He doesn't have the speed to run with TEs and RBs, either. Not a guy who can lose a step. Still, he is a nice, complementary player, rock solid hands as a punt returner with some return ability. So-so defensive player, essentially a starter.

How about 4 yrs., $16M - $18M, $6.5 guaranteed? That is, more than Guion, less than Burnett, more or less Neal/Perry money?

Gosh, that's sounds like a fair amount of coin.

Hyde was a mediocre punt returner in 2015, I think he needs to show some of his former playmaking ability there to demand that sort of paycheck.

Punt Return Avg By Year:

2013: 12.3 (1TD)
2014: 15.8 (2 TD)
2015: 5.8 (0 TD)

It seemed like there were stretches last season where Hyde was calling for a fair catch when the ball was just off the punter's foot. When the offense struggles as it did last year, it would be nice to see the special teams step up and make an explosive play.

Hyde is probably more valuable to the Packers than most other teams. Capers runs those exotic defenses and Hyde is a Swiss Army Knife for those Ds. Hyde is to the defense like a possession receiver is to the offense. The one guy who's similar to Hyde on the roster is Brice an UDFA except I haven't seen him catch like Hyde. In fact I haven't seen any Packer DB catch like Hyde.

Hyde is a good player. Not a great player but a really good one. He is a good fit in Green Bay's defense because he can play both CB and Safety. Capers has experience using those types of players and finds ways to use them.

I think Hyde needs to be more of a Safety then CB though. With the talk of using Burnett as an ILB, it will be away to get Hyde on the field and to use his versatility. Hyde has proven to be a playmaker also.

He has the ability to make plays on the ball and which can change a game. He showed that in preseason game 1 this year. And his one handed interception last year shows he can make an impact.

As always, keeping Hyde will be about the money. If his price is right TT will resign him. If not everyone moves on. I hope that the Packers are able to keep Hyde, he has a knack at being around the ball and making plays. However, if he can score a big payday elsewhere he's earned it. Thanks, Since '61

He reminds me of Brock Marion. Not the fastest but always around the football and knows how to make a big play. Marion was a special teams back up guy for a few years and really blossomed in his late 20's and early 30's. I could see Hyde doing the same thing. He has progressively gotten better over his career and that's all you can ask for. I hope he re-signs with us
