Packers 27 Lions 13 Game Balls & Lame Calls

The Packers make a statement, controlling the Lions from start to finish.

When the game clock hit 0:00 on January 25th, the Packers and their fans had been waiting for this moment. When the schedule was released on May 14th, we had this game circled, highlighted and surrounded by exclamation marks. But ten days ago, when the team made their biggest acquisition in thirty years, the Packers were finally ready. Would they have won without Micah? Most likely, with how the home team performed today (extending their home opener winning streak to thirteen straight years in the process). But the Packers didn't just win. They dominated.

In a game that saw the Packers start as a mere two point home favorite, Green Bay ends with a resounding 14 point victory, and I'd argue that the margin still doesn't do the team justice. They've got an exciting matchup on the horizon against the Commanders, but Green Bay has a couple of serious monkeys off their back. They beat an elite, NFC North opponent, and looked good doing it. The team should feel as confident as anybody in the league right now.

Game Balls

Jeff Hafley

So many of the questions that we all had about this team were on the defensive side of the ball. How would the Packers generate pass rush in 2025? How will the team hang onto leads with a cornerback room powered only by the power of friendship? Would Edgerrin Cooper and Quay Walker see a regression without linebacker coach Anthony Campanelli (who by the way coached a great game in Jacksonville). And perhaps most importantly, even before the trade of Kenny Clark, how would the interior of the defensive line stop the run without TJ Slaton?

It turns out the answer all along was: don't worry, we've got Jeff Hafley.

No matter what the Lions did on offense, it seemed like the Packers had all the answers to it. The vaunted running back duo of Sonic and Knuckles was held to 44 yards and a really good  2.1 YPC. Jared Goff never looked comfortable in the pocket, and Amon-Ra St. Brown was only able to generate 45 yards, zero touchdowns, and one temper tantrum. The pass rush cruised to four sacks and almost as important, nine tackles for loss. They just looked like the better prepared team on both sides of the ball, and took full advantage of the turmoil surrounding the Lions' turnover at coordinator.

Packers fans, make sure you enjoy this man while he's here this season, because my money would be on Hafley finding a head coaching job this offseason.

Pass Blocking

The team's newly re-shuffled offensive line looked like a newly minted, state of the art machine for stretches of the game. In his much anticipated return from a broken leg last season, Aiden Hutchinson was rendered largely ineffective by the Packers, and if he hopes to return to the historic form he started with last year, he'll have to wait till next week for the launch party. The Lions finished the game with zero sacks, zero qb hits, six QB pressures and six QB hurries. Jordan Love took advantage of the team's early scoring drives to get that early game lead that both he and Matt LaFleur have spoken at length about coveting so much. And with an improved pass rush at the other end of the field, they've got even more reason to try to put their opponents in a hole early in games. Look for more deep shots early on Thursday against a Commanders secondary that looks a bit suspect.

Jordan Love & the receivers.

We might be back, folks.

Two touchdowns, 188 yards, a 128.6 QB rating, and a couple of "f**k it" balls later, it's a good time to be a Packers fan. Love looked as poised and confident as ever on those opening drives, and his touchdown throw to Kraft was an absolute lazerbeam. There's a couple balls that he'd like to have back (including a pair of very lucky non-interceptions on back to back plays, but the arrow for Jordan is pointed straight up.

He and his receivers were in sync today, and it showed up in the form of: no drops! I've said before that I'll stop worrying about the drops when the Packers produce a game without them. Now that they've done that, will I (and probably you, dear reader) stop? Probably not, no. But the Packers showed exactly why the depth they possess at pass catcher is so dangerous. Ten different players logged a reception from Jordan on Sunday, and that kind of plethora of options is what makes the Packers offense so dangerous when they get going.

What makes this game especially impressive for the team was their response to what was a kryptonite for them last season: man coverage. The Lions employed it early and often and challenged the Packers to prove they could win against it. Spoiler alert: they can.

Lame Calls

Third quarter play calling

In the second quarter, when the Lions finished off a nine minute drive and the Packers responded with a two play touchdown drive, it was an electric moment. Probably the most important moment in the game. The Packers dictated to the Lions that they weren't going to be able to slow the tempo of the game down, and challenged the Lions to pass. But while watching the following drive, you could tell how the defense was already running on fumes.

I want to be clear that I don't necessarily disagree with the premise of establishing the run in the second half. You've got to save your defense from getting gashed late in the fourth quarter because they've got nothing left in the tank. But when the team starts to have multiple three and outs, you're doing the very thing you set out to prevent: putting your defense out on the field. I didn't love the playcalling on the two minute drill to end the second quarter (12 personnel with a minute left? Just kneel it out at that point). I didn't love the playcalling on those three and outs in the third quarter. But the premise is solid, even if I still think keeping the deep game active could have been a better solution to what the Packers wanted to do (possess the ball for long stretches).

Just switch it up man. Three straight runs up the middle couldn't get it done, and it felt like the Packers left some points on the table by being so conservative on those drives.

Run Blocking

We've given the offensive line their flowers for a magnificent showing, keeping Jordan Love clean and giving him the time to stretch the field when he needed to. There's another side to the coin though. The team's run blocking was not anything to write home about, and this goes hand in hand with those stalled offensive drives in the third quarter. You have to give them the credit for allowing the run game to seal the deal later on, but a team that relies on the run like the Packers do need that run blocking to be solid all the way through a game. The discrepancy between run blocking and pass blocking was an area of concern last season as well, and I wonder if the Packers are still learning how to play with their new-look, beefier interior OL.

Three and Out

--  Micah Parsons. You've just got to talk about him, right? From the pop of the crowd when he was introduced for the first time, to his electric first sack as a Packer, it's not hard to see what makes him special.  There was a noticeable difference in the teams' defense when he was on and off the field, stemming mostly from how the Lions treated him (you can bet Jerry Jones's insistence to trade Micah Parson a week before the season began has also made him a rather unpopular figure in Detroit as well). For example, the third down stop when the Lions were backed up on their own endzone. Colby Wooden gets a free lane to the running back from the A gap. Why would that ever happen? Because the Lions have to devote resources to Micah Parsons, on every single play (yes Cowboys fans, even run plays.) Over the course of Sunday's game, Parsons played only 45% of defensive snaps, but still finished with the second most pressures ( behind LVN, who also had a great game). The results of those sacks were: a 2 yard completion, an interception, and a sack. As Tony Romo said during the broadcast: that's why you trade for him. That electric impact that doesn't show up on the box score.

-- As the team looks ahead to a matchup with the Washington Commanders in four short days, the team added a few names to its injured list. Zach Tom, Aaron Banks, Bo Melton and Brenton Cox Jr all exited the game on Sunday, and we certainly hope that they'll all be ready to go on Thursday Night Football. One of the more interesting moves that the Packers made mid game was the decision to play Dalton Kinnard at RT instead of Anthony Belton, following Tom's injury. Kinnard certainly looked at home in the spot, including a couple of nice lead blocks on those late game-sealing runs by Josh Jacobs. Major focus for the next few days has to be getting Kinnard and Morgan settled into RT and LG, if the need is there on Thursday.

-- The special teams unit looks absolutely locked in. Wheilan continues to kick the absolute snot out of the ball, and his ability to tilt the field is turning into a legitimate weapon for the Packers. McManus did his part with zero missed kicks, and I thought the coverage units were solid on kick and punt duties, particularly Bo Melton before his early exit. Savion Williams handling kick return duties was a pleasant surprise as well, and I think he's got real potential to take one to the house this season. I'll be interested to see how the team continues to handle punt returner this season. Matthew Golden certainly has the skillset to flourish as a returner, but was replaced by the usual suspect at the spot, Jayden Reed.

Fantastic Team Win! After the game, I kept thinking about the many different players who made great, meaningful plays in this game on offense, defense, AND special teams.

Special recognition to the VERY recent additions to the roster!
1. Nick Niemann's fantastic kickoff coverage play to discourage the Lions from scoring before the half. He looks like a FANTASTIC addition.
2. Darrian Kinnard didn't just "fill in," he made some great blocks!
3. Some guy named Micah Parsons. Holy cow, is he electric.

I'd much rather see Savion Williams returning than Golden Bullet. He's just built to survive the impact much better. I'd still rather see a RB or LB do it, but with Marshawn Lloyd hurt that might not be a good option?

I'm still surprised that Reed wasn't considered guilty of a dropped pass on that one play.
It sure looked like he had a good chance on it.

The NFL-approved statistic called "drop" is different from what a coach or fan considers a drop. In order to be logged as a drop in the statbook, the judge has to say that a receiver should have caught a ball with "ordinary effort" and the nearest defender has to be at least an arm's length away from the receiver.

In my view (and I believe the coaches' views as well), the ball wasn't tipped and it hit Reed squarely in his hands. An NFL receiver should be bringing that in more often than not.

Reed doesn't. Extended that far away from his body? His catch radius isn't that big. His super power is speed, getting closer to the ball. Room for improvement. #9 is hopefully working on the ability to track the ball straight over his head. "Kinda important" for a deep threat.

#0 shows neither of those weakness so far.

A chance for an amazing catch, of the variety he can't make, yes. I fear they'll use him up early in the season and stunt his career by making this injury worse, but he does play well when injured.

Colby Wooden gets a game ball from me. He was playing in Detroit's backfield all day...and he was someone who I thought sure was a roster cutdown patsy after the draft.

I've come to embrace being wrong.

I am still holding out. I did come around far enough to write that Wooden should make the 53, but part of that was Brinson and Stackhouse fizzling a little after the first 3 padded practices.

A lot of the damage came against the Lions' offensive guards, who allowed a bunch of pressures each. I posted that info from PFF under the snap count article.

I hope to fully embrace the notion of being wrong about Wooden when the Packers play a team with good IOL guys. For now, I am cautiously supportive.

Agree that Hafley will have offers-perhaps the Packers could offer a substantial raise and new leadership position as a Co-Head Coach. (Bisaccia has over-stayed, IMO).

When Kinnard came in, Jacobs was able to run freely and pick up significant yardage.

Stenavich calls the run game-

I remeber reading many interviews with Hafley that one of the reasons he accepted was that he wanted just to coach football, without all the tasks of (college) head coach. I just checked and he had salary as head coach of 3,5 milllions. He could probaly get much more as Head coach

I mean, seriously dobber, we're talking about a coach that was co-defensive coordinator & defensive backs coach for Ohio State in 2019 before taking the HC job at Boston College. The brain trust at 1265 had better make him First Lieutenant of the Team or Interim ad hoc head coach before some other NFL team snaps him up. Liam Coen and Dave Canales aren't going to last long and we'd sure never ever find another DC as qualified as Hafley.

Lame call: Refs again. If you truly want to get rid of taunting then call it whenever it occurs. Just don't call it once a game to make someone an example and then ignore it the rest of the game. I watched four games this week and they called it once a game and then ignored it. It appears they just want to look like they are doing something, sort of like limiting head shots. You rarely see that called anymore.

Dan Campbell was crying about the calls but I literally saw his players offsides, holding, hands to the face multiple times and in the end St brown taking a swing and a miss. His teams typically benefit from non calls.

Very nice start to the season considering how bad the Packers have performed in their past opening games. Beating a division team that has owned them for the past three seasons its so important. Won't see the Lions again until Thanksgiving day. Great start, still have some areas on offense they need to correct but I'll wait until the Packers play a few more games before offering any constructive criticism. Short week for the Packers commanders are up next on Thursday night. Excellent victory - GPG.

Play calling on the first two drive of the second half is the only issue from me in this game. Getting that first first down is so important. I don't know how many times I have seen 3rd and short yardage get stuffed over the years. That first series at the start of the second half should be scripted with plays that get the first down. Very important that LaFleur figures this out over the course of the season. We will need those little victories like getting that first first down in the second half in the playoffs.

It might not have been the play calling so much as execution. The Packers have come out with Jacobs and not thrown the ball all the way down the field before especially when Willis was playing. Perplexing. I really thought the line would come out better at run blocking than pass protection to start the season.

I agree with almost all of this article. I will admit that I was not happy with the play calling in the 3rd. After thinking about it I believe MLF called running plays to give the OL a chance to prove themselves and improve on the run blocking being as we had a good lead. I agree the pass protection was great the run blocking needs work.

I also wonder how much of that was on JL10. Did he have options to pass and just didn't take them? These are the sorts of things we can't know without being in the huddle. Room for improvement in a dominating win?!? Yes please! And more of that :)

Game Balls
I agree with the choices above. Hafley has this defense cooking! The Pass blocking was insanely good! Love was great outside of a couple of throws. And the WR's didn't have any true drops.

I will add a couple of game balls.

Gutey -
First the Parsons trade looks like a steal! But look at some of the other moves he made. Darian Kinnard already came in a played and played well. Nick Niemann had 4 special teams tackles. These moves are ones that pay off. He saw they needed more OL help and got Kinnard.

Colby Wooden -
He really stood out to me. He was honestly a guy I thought could get cut before camp. Now he is a starting DL, and looks so much better.

LVN -
I think he is poised for a big year. Before Parsons I thought he was going to be improved, but with Parsons, I think he is going to really show up.

Lame Calls

Refs Taunting -
Sorry but this crack down on taunting... Its a joke.

Injuries -
Suffering 4 injuries that we know about is not a good thing especially with a short week. Tom, Banks, Melton, and Cox all left the game. 2 on the OL is really not a good thing. Hopefully they will be ok and it was more of a precaution pulling them out.

On the refs Taunting call: Someone in NFL HQ got a big bonus check, for coming up with that one. Probably the same guy who thought to flag OL guys for lining up too deep, at the LOS. They threw flags for that, and then, after a while, I haven't seen it called since.

LVN looked good, especially when playing next to Parsons at DT. Those two just collapsed the pocket on the D's right side on the way to Goff. His signature bull rush was effective at DT up the middle with Parsons bending, and defeating his blocks to harass the QB on his right.

I kept waiting for the 'slow start' to happen. It didn't. The Packers came out with fire for the first time in a long time. While I had my doubts going into the season, this team does look legit--solid in all phases of the game. I know this had to send a message to the rest of the league. They just beat a team that went 15-2 last year.
The Lions knew the Packers would run with Jacobs, but the offense just went at a good defense with a slick passing attack.

Another measure of the Packers will come Thursday from another team that is solid in all aspects. If the Packers can shut down the Commanders it will say much.

Game balls: Jordan Love, Tucker Kraft, all receivers, pass blocking, the entire defense (welcome to GB, Parsons!), Whelan and McManus

Lame calls: run blocking, more special teams penalties that nullified numerous good returns, injuries to Melton and Tom, and MLF, PLEASE STOP GIVING UP BEFORE HALFTIME. ONE MINUTE LEFT WITH TWO TIMEOUTS, AFTER AN INTERCEPTION, AT HOME, WITH ALL THE MOMENTUM, FACING A DIVISION RIVAL AND KNOWING THEY'RE GETTING THE BALL IN THE SECOND HALF, COME ON. How many other coaches in the league would give up in that situation? It led to 3 straight punts by GB and MLF needs to keep his foot on the pedal, especially in big games like this.

A win is a win and it felt so good to finally put the Lions fans in their place after all of the off-season banter about how good they were going to be regardless of their coordinators leaving, how their defense was going to be lights out with the return of Hutchinson and let's not forget the "200 yards on the ground claims".

On to Washington,

Great game to watch and so exciting. Yes, the 3rd quarter play calling could have been a bit better but he was just trying to rest the defense from the first half and did not get it done.

As happy as I was with this game, there was that disappointing red flag thrown by LAF. I guess I would have thought this would have been addressed from last season. At least it did not affect the game at all but could in future games.

Did you ever see that Lions receiver get two feet on the ground in bounds? I did not and thought we were ROBBED.

Can't argue with any of this article or fan comments. The conservative third qtr play calling was disappointing though. Great coaches keep the petal to the metal and make the other team stop the success- in this case, force them to stop the pass which they couldn't do in the first half. I am concerned though about the injuries and the short turn around to Thursdsy night? Hopefully, either Tom and/or Banks will be available?

Either their injuries are minor or our depth is up to the task (knock on wood) Hopefully both?

My thoughts exactly on hafley. He is gone after this year, and I keep thinking about all the trouble packers have finding a competent DC.

Love played good, but I wish he would eliminate those 1 or 2 "wtf were you thinking" moments per game. But I guess all QBs have those moments? I was watching AR, and he almost gave up an INT or should have actually but DB dropped the ball.

Speaking of AR and watching that game, I get the impression that Detroit might be in for a big fall, because Jets looked pretty good (the new HC is detroit's old DC). Detroit's HC always seemed like a moron to me (regular fake punts from your own 20?! lol), and i suspect the DC made him look much better.

OL injuries already. Yikes.

Oh and zero drops! That is probably one of the most exciting parts of the game.

Parsons delivered. His very first play, you could see the DL next to him telling him what to do ("ok, rush the passer"). His effectiveness should grow over the season as he and hafley learn and do more together.

One “lame” call not mentioned. Remember when the internet “sleuths” were talking about the Parsons back injury and how it was much worse than reported.

At the top of the CBS broadcast Tracy Wolfson reported NO EPIDURAL was needed.

#1 was constantly double teamed and the way they pushed his head back and he ran through it anyway made MY lower back hurt! Lol. I'm glad he's wearing a brace and still hope he's ok after that ...

on some of those Packers 3 and outs in short yardage Love made no attempt to use the middle of the field or any slants we have excellent tight ends for this but instead they tried to run up the middle for no gain , is it Love or is it MLF not calling it , will it improve as the season continues ? the TD pass to Kraft was a dime but I'm talking about short yardage , you have to convert those 3 rd and shorts.

MLf.

When Love is in rhythm he’s great.

Do the same type of plays lions do. Quick passes to the backs let them pick a hole and get 8 yards

Needed more of Wilson and Brooks.

I love Jacob’s but this game was over after Evan picked off the pass.

Long season Jacob’s played lots of snaps.

100% agree - TE's appear to be running free on a regular basis on short yardage plays, easy plays on 3rd down seemingly right over the middle all the time and we have some talent there. Great success for all aspects of the Packers game, just seemingly were in cruise control in the 3rd quarter as we had seen on countless occasions, but the defense was stifling. Looked like Detroit was clueless on how to attack offensively the whole game, Goff looked more like Erik Kramer out there.

My thoughts exactly, I don't know that's all on MLF. Those relief valves are either part of the play or available even if not. If #85 develops a connection with JL10 such that he creates options for his QB when plays would otherwise get shut down #85 could become one of the greats ...

Lions. have two very good ball-hawking safeties in Joseph and Branch...and in the case of Joseph, a dirty player who wipes out guys' knees.

Add the terrible Unsportsmanlike on McKinney to Lame Calls. I guess you can't hurt the other teams feelings.

It's like the refs expect you to fall down and lay on the ground after you make a tackle :/

The Packers Defense was Gang Green yesterday. Hafley's vision and break to the ball and swarm the ball carrier, get him to the ground was evident yesterday. Parsons is indeed going to supercharge this identity.

They held Detroit to a FG after a 9 minute plus drive (and 6 total game points until the one handed circus catch by TesSlaa in garbage time).

Then the quick strike Packers O answered with a 53 second drive of their own with two beautiful pass plays to Doubs and to Reed who scored the TD.

I heard on the way home, yesterday was the worst day running the ball since Campbell arrived in Detroit. Now that's something! Sonic and Knuckles were Surrounded and Knocked down.

Campbell and the Lions were thoroughly embarrassed yesterday. I am going to go and visit the Motor City site (similar format to APC). Should be interesting.

First off - I was really excited after the first half - and then we started the second half on offense with some bad play calls and gave the ball right back ( sounds like last year???) - Finally we all have to remember that it is only the first game. Talk to me after week 4. Washington at home but short week. And there 2 very winable games - Dallas and Cleveland. If we are 4-0 then it is time to get a little bit ecstatic? Go Pack = but get some motion - and Jordon take the easy plays ( 2 that I can think of - including the should have been pick).

The only irksome moment for me was LaFleur's comment on the Offense's "lull" in the second half. So why is that? Could it be LaFleur's tendency for conservative play calling when playing with a lead? Also his predictable and awful 3rd and 4th-and-1 play calling? Maybe try something different on those downs than just handing-off to Jacobs. Like going with a multi-back set or bringing in Malik Willis or wildcat with Savion Williams... Please anything than just what virtually everyone knows what you are going to do. Otherwise LaFleur's "all gas no brakes" motto presents itself as hypocritical.

Definitely room for improvement in this area too. Much easier to stomach in a FOURTEEN POINT WIN, but yes.

Wyatt was the DL hero imo. And he can get to the QB.
I was a a little disappointed in our short yardage situations.
We are very seriously a team to be reckoned with.

Lame call --- OK, we had 1 3-and-out.
Game ball --- We also had one 2-and-touchdown. One of the fastest 65 yards in Packer history.

“Packers fans, make sure you enjoy this man while he's here this season, because my money would be on Hafley finding a head coaching job this offseason. “

This is his 2nd season as a D coordinator. Why Jinx it? Seriously. Just because Romo put that out there in the universe doesn’t make it true. Look at how long we stuck with Dom Capers undeservedly. Cant we have nice things for awhile other than one freaking season??
