I've been re-thinking what the Packers needs in light of Pettine's preference to get push up the middle.

That means no Brian Burns at 12, Kyle (too lightweight, not a good fit) and after spending 4th, 4th, and 3rd round picks at ILB the last three years, I sure wouldn't go with ILB White at #12, certainly not until we find out what Oren Burks is. The bigger edge guys, Sweat and, if there, Ferrell, are attractive, but I'm doing it differently.

I want to run with what our DC Pettine likes, so at 12, I go for a 3tech type DL, one with pass rush capability. That means Ed Oliver (probably gone at 12), Jeffery Simmons, Rashan Gary or Chris Wilkins. If unable to achieve that at 12 for any reason, the default is Jerry Tillery at #30.

With the second, first round pick, I applaud the choice of OT Taylor. My reckoning is that most of the quality OTs are gone by the Packers round 2 pick, so #30 is a good spot for OT. I'd go for Andre Dillard or Cody Ford if there, but Kyle's pick of Jawaan Taylor is a fine choice.

At #44 I don't think OT G.Little is still there, good OT's go FAST. Nothing wrong with Dalton Risner in round 2, but this is where I'm going for (potential) edge rusher, with Texas DL Charles Omenihu, He's a 6'6", 275lbs guy who could be a better Nick Perry - he has played anywhere from interior to a wide 9 split and has top-notch acceleration. Failing him, I'd go after Chase Winovich.

With the third round pick, I'm not going WR, although I recognise there IS good value there this year, it's deep in WRs.

Guard has to wait a little longer too, 4th/5th round is usually the hunting ground for Packer guards, and I might even wait until the 6th, for Mississippi's Javon Patterson. This is not as stupid as it may sound (given the Packers need there), as the Packers round one OT can play guard in year one, and move to OT when Bulaga's contract is up after 2019, when guard can be re-visited in that draft.

Round 3 is where I hope to get a free safety type and it might take a move up (using a 4th) to get who i want. I like Chauncey Gardner-Johnson here (I expect to just miss out on Juan Thornhill).

There are plenty of decent TEs in later rounds, but they are not normally going to be seam-stretchers. Someone like TE Caleb Wilson is possible, he is fast enough to make it awkward for defenses, but needs to add about 15lbs.

Finally, I'd either grab another RB, like Mike Weber or Bruce Anderson, or I'd push the boat right out for free safeties and take another, Fresno FS, Mike Bell, who is also my default if Thornhill and Gardner-Johnson are gone in the third.

One guy who could make me rethink my draft off is if Boston Guard Chris Lindstrom is there in round three. He'd be tempting there and would certainly be my pick in the 4th. I've seen him anywhere from mid 2nd to late 4th, and I'm not quite sure where he ends up going.

Well, there's enough to chew on, keep up the projections.

If you want Taylor you better hope he's there @ the #12 pick.

Some sites have Thompson rated as the number 7 safety in this years draft. 1st round may be to high.

They felt that a first-round buzz was building around Thompson, but the play turned out to be a flash in the pan, as he really struggled in the second half of the season. He stopped making plays on the ball, missed tackles, missed interceptions, and ended up getting picked on deep downfield, including in ugly performances against Georgia, Oklahoma and Clemson. As a result, Thompson ended up getting mid-round grades. Evaluators feel that he has a good skill set, but poor instincts which led to him giving up long touchdowns late in the year. In 2018, he had two interceptions, six passes broken up, three forced fumbles and 79 tackles.

Good point, Bear. That late season slippage will probably make quite a difference, unless something comes out about him playing injured.
