My One and Only Packers 53-man Roster Prediction 2021

Jersey Al takes his annual shot at predicting the Packers roster on cutdown day.

You've read too many 53-man roster predictions, you say? No kidding! Weekly predictions seem to be the norm nowadays. Going back over a decade, I've tried to be kind to you and only do one of these.

So here it is, my annual stab at predicting the Packers' 53-man roster. Note that unless otherwise indicated, this is what I think the Packers will do, not necessarily what I would do. (although this year, I'd say it's close to identical).

The Turk is a cruel taskmaster, and soon, 27 NFL dreams will hit a bump in the road or be ended completely.

It's never a fun day, but it is a fun exercise to try to predict the outcomes.

Here goes:.

OFFENSE: 24

QB: Rodgers, Love

RB: Jones, Dillon, Hill

TE: Tonyan, Lewis, Deguara, Daffney

WR: Adams, Lazard, MVS, Cobb, Rodgers, Taylor

OL: DBAK, Turner, Jenkins, Myers, Newman, Patrick, Runyan, Nijman, Braden

QB, RB and TE are locks, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Packers cut bait with Sternberger. As Zack Kruse tweeted (after stealing my thoughts), there isn't one thing he does that you could say is impressive. WR has been a lock in my book for a couple of weeks now. I've had Malik Taylor as the #6, even after Funchess impressed against the Texans. With Funchess out for the year, this one becomes easy. OL came down to keeping nine or ten, with DBak likely put on the initial 53 and then go on recallable IR. My choice means keeping only eight OL (minus DBak), but I remember a year they started with seven, so it's not unheard of. If Dennis Kelly were not injured, I likely would have added him, but with that uncertainty, I'm rolling the dice to be able to keep another special teamer on defense.

DEFENSE: 26

DL: Clark, Lowry, Keke, Slaton, Heflin

ILB: Barnes, Campbell, Burks, Summers, McDuffie

OLB: Z Smith, P Smith, Gary, Garvin, Rivers

CB: Alexander, King, Sullivan, Stokes, Shemar Jean-Charles, Ento

S: Amos, Savage, Black, Scott, Uphoff

It's hard to say that any defensive position group is a lock. On the DL, I don't think the Packers will risk losing Heflin on waivers and they could decide to keep Lancaster as well as insurance. However, keeping 6 DL is something the Packers haven't done in a long time. I say they decide that Heflin and Slaton can combine to take Lancaster's snaps from last season and they save about $1M on the cap by letting Lancaster go. At ILB, this is where the core special teamers will come from and thus the Packers keep more than they really need at that position (five).  The Packers also add a fifth outside linebacker here (Rivers), at least to start the season, with Z. Smith uncertain to play week one. The sixth cornerback position comes down to Ento and Yiadom. I pointed out in a previous post that Ento is doing well in coverage, but his tackling still needs work. On the other hand, Yiadom showed what he is against the Bills - six catches allowed on six targets, including a TD. His career stats show him as a "TD enabler," so the Packers go with Ento, the player they've put a lot of development time into. Finally, again looking to bolster their terrible special teams, the Packers add UDFA Uphoff as the fifth safety, who has shown the potential to be a special teams ace.

SPECIALISTS: 3

Crosby, Scott, Bradley

No surprises to start, but I almost expect the Packers to replace Scott with a punter who didn't make it onto another team's roster. Gutey surely knows which teams are having heated battles at the position, where the player cut is deserving of being on an NFL roster.

PRACTICE SQUAD:

Begelton, Winfree, P. Taylor, Previlon, Scott, Galeai, Van Lanen, Kaufusi, Yiadom, Denmark, Gaines, Benkert, Wilborn, Hanson, Harris, Cronk,

I can go with this. I’d try to find a way to keep Lancaster, if he’s healthy, because he’ll be damn useful in short yardage and goal line over a 20 game run. I do not know who I would cut to make room for him though.

I can’t disagree Al except I thought no they keep Gaines instead of Uphoff. Also, I think they keep Kelly, put him on IR and then put Gaines on the roster.
Scott and Bradley are both on a VERY
Short leash. Should they stink up a game, they gone.

Nice lineup and I can’t argue with any choices. I do think Sternberger stays in some fashion. He really is our only insurance right now if Tonyan balls out and we can’t afford him. Great job Al

Sternberger is NOT insurance if Tonyan decide to go. They will either draft another TE, or trade for one capable TE...

Yes, sometimes a player’s attitude plays himself off a roster. It doesn’t have to be poor behavior, a lack of desire and determination will do it. That’s Sternberger in my view. If I’m right you start again.

Based on past performance, you can let Sternberger go and keep Dafney. All in all, Dafney outplayed him last year. It's probably been a wash this preseason between those two.

Lewis, Tonyan, Deguara, and Dafney is a pretty good unit.

Things could happen, guys could get hurt. Maybe some team loses their TE and we can trade Sternberger for a Day 3 pick.

Sternberger stays after the 2 game suspension. What the Fans see and what is the reality are two separate worlds. If Gutedkunst hangs on to deadbeats like Jackson and Burks, he will not scuttle Jake. He is their second best receiving TE .He was not drafted to block.

Good job Al, and I wouldn't change much. I agree that I hope a punter is picked up this week and we can say goodbye to J. K. I see a couple of pickups off the waiver wire also to compete until week #1. The team is always looking to improve at every position. There will be injuries but this is a very deep roster this year.

The bills camera people spent more time in the booth then on the field. I wanted to read the names of two playes who looked lost, clueless and should have not been on a football field. Later I discovered it was Ento and YA Dum.
If either of these two makes the team then the packers stooped to new lows again. Of course keeping King kind of sets the bar pretty low.
Was hoping Uphoff would show something and he was missing in action also. A safty isnt supposed to let a qb run 15 yards into the endzone un touched. This would have been his shining moment and he was no wear to be found.

I also had Kelly and Lancaster not making the 53. It would be great if the talents of Rivers and Garvin could be combined into one player - but it makes sense that the Packers fortify the OLB depth - especially with Z-Smith questionable for the start. At this point in time, I regard Denmark as a better CB than Ento - but it's potaytoes - potahtoes. Same with Uphoff and Gaines. I think Gaines is the better safety but Uphoff may be better at STs. And STs certainly needs all the help it can get. Perhaps that is why Burks makes the roster as well as McDuffie. Although even with McDuffie's single audition - I regard him as a much better LB than Burks

My take in Ento is that if I needed a depth player to fill in on the perimeter he’s the 4th option easily. SJC and Sullivan are not ideal and Sullivan is effectively a starter in the middle. That leaves Alexander Stokes and King. It’s a long season and we need a 4th. More so if they want Alexander taking some snaps at Star. Ento can cover a receiver. His tackling is hit and miss certainly, but may improve but you can’t teach ball skills and instincts. He has consistently rated as one of our best STers (including tackling on STs). Keep him.

That's a solid 53, Al. Nice job. I'd replace Summers or Burks with Wilborn, and Ento with Denmark. IR Vernon Scott and sign Gaines in his place, should he clear waivers. That way Scott can return when fully healthy if needed. Those hamstrings can take any number of weeks to recover.

good luck lancaster. if they want a large runstuffer, they can find a snacks harrison type down the line. i like gaines to make the team but we will see. burks being " a good special teams player" and making it because of special teams is kind of funny to me. hes been on this horrid packers special teams for the last 3 years and done nothing. hes only a "core special teamer" because he cant get on the field for real snaps. its sad because after that texans game i was rooting for him but i dont think they keep 5 ilbs. they run a lot of big nickel with 1 guy in the middle and 3 safetys. you dont need to be 5 deep there. i wish burks and summers could be solid. but as bad santa once said " wish in one hand and shit in the other, see which one fills up first." id rather have wilborn as the 4th guy. we know what burks and summers are. switch it up out there.

Denmark looked a lot better than Ento or Yiadom, but I wonder if the comparison is fair. Ento and Yiadom were playing against starters. I think Denmark only played in the second half, when the Bills starters were done for the day.

For all of the discussion prior to preseason about the many candidates and battles for a roster spot at WR, RB, OL and DB, this roster was surprisingly easy to agree to. The WR battle came down to Taylor vs Begelton, the RB battle was a "no contest" in favor of Hill, the OL battle to Kelly vs Braden, and the DBs to Gaines vs Uphoff and Ento vs Yiadom. In the categories that actually had a "versus", I am not sure either pick would be bad. The only real surprise for me was no Benkert on the PS - not sure that is right.

I agree with Jersey Al's salary cap work by releasing Lancaster, Kelly and Sternberger. I don't think the Packers are better keeping any of the three and would prefer the younger guys who might have more upside at this stage.

I also don't think Gute is done shopping. There will be a few tweaks yet to come.

A healthy Funcess would have given rise to real debate.

My dark horse once again stumbled out of the gait. When Holman did not impress, Ento became probable.

Hill just blew his competition away. That's what you want.

Heflin really might not be better than Lancaster, who will have no trouble securing employment in the NFL. Younger, more team control, is good. Making Lowry expendable would have been bigger. Still nice, though.

Safety really remained status quo. Black might have improved 🤔 but Redmond was a big loss as a deep Safety and good special teamd player. I don't think the depth at safety improved. They have 3 guys who can play the box. Take a look at tre Boston. He can't tackle worth a darn but he can cover and might be cheap enough.

ILB depth didn't step up. Not sure even about the starters for that Matter: hoping for adequate.

OL was great. Nijman and Braden can play and Newman can start. A little disappointed in Myers given his 2nd round status, but he is adequate.

Pretty good take with a couple of exceptions. I don’t know what more you expected from Myers? I’d say he’s ahead of any reasonable curve. I thought Wilborn did show up as a tackler and in coverage and that McDuffie has also done so after a late start. I’m not sure that Harris isn’t better too.

The rest I agree with strongly.

I think that looks about right. Sternberger is killing himself. It would not surprise me to see a T get picked up and have Nijman go back to the PS. I don't think he is ready for prime time, and certainly not at LT. Ento and Scott should also be replaced if possible. I kind of like Beggelton. Too bad there isn't room for him.

Mark...did you not watch the 3 PS games? Nijman was a rock at LT with the exception of two plays. He stoned his opponents play after play and was active in the run game.

No way he makes the PS. Too much tape on him now. He's better than journeyman T Kelly who hasn't shown anything this training camp.

Nijman was the 4th highest rated OL who played over 50 snaps on any team in the preseason playing mostly LT, the most difficult position to find players other than QB. Many teams had starters in that list. There is no way in hades that Nijman won’t get snapped up. The best was our rookie RG. That’s quite a boost for the future!

I would think they keep 6 DL and sacrifice a secondary depth spot but as you pointed out, not their typical M.O. Sounds like Steelers, Giants, and Rams are having punter values. Rams battle is interesting because there will be a chance to get a guy that gave Hekker a run for his money, or maybe Hekker himself.

This is very good in my view. On D I’m not sure how usage patterns by position will change, for example S vs CB, ILB v S and OL v OLB. That makes deciding numbers complex, and last year possibly a worse predictor.

I’d err in favor of keeping Lancaster and keeping Burks sticks in my craw after watching him when not rushing in game 2. I’d like to see Wilborn on the roster and Harris on the PS. Ento, McDuffie, Wilborn, Daffney can be our gunners and be adequate depth. McDuffie can rush. Ditch Burks.

S bothers me. We have 3 promising box types, the only one who has shown any signs of deep cover promise is hurt. If we want to play Amos in the box or Savage at Star, we must have a player at least semi competent playing deep to replace them. Uphoff is going to be a good STer, but was rated terribly in coverage on Saturday (rightly) and has looked raw in camp. He’s too slight and too raw to do anything else, yet. Put him on the PS.

I’d be working Denmark as a deep S to see if that’s his ticket to the roster and playing time. At 6’2” and 217, he’s big enough to play deep (28 pounds in Redmond). He would also be a potential CB option In games if injury struck. He could make the roster if they believe they already know that.

OLB is worrying. The coaches seem to love Garvin but he seldom shows. I was higher on Rivers, but he was quiet on Saturday. These players do not offer much as rushers and nor do they promise much in coverage. We need a player who is a rush threat of some sort ... hard to find now, but we might find a coverage capable type. If Z is down, Smith needs to be focused purely on rush.

It strikes me that there are 3 positions where we might pick up a player for the roster (or PS): traditional TE in the Nuata mold, deep S (if Denmark isn’t the answer) and an OLB with coverage skills (a real rusher is not likely available)

One question, why keep Yiadom on the PS? He can’t cover. I’d go with Harris. Edit: you have him after repost. I’d swap him for Capra.

I think we could end up bringing a LS onto the PS. I’m also going off the beaten track in thinking Hazelton might have a shot at the PS. He’s got good hands and is a big possession guy, but the reason is that they had him filling the blocking receiver role. If Lazard were hurt we don’t have one on the roster. Rodgers/Cobb and Taylor aren’t that. Nor are Winfree or Bagelton. That’s a big part of LaFleur’s O.

I can't help but wonder if Dexter Williams is a guy who is ready to break out.
He seemed highly motivated and highly effective in the preseason, but may have been somewhat lost in the competition for running back.
Sometimes it takes a guy a couple of years in the NFL before he's ready to pop. He's not new anymore, though, and thus may be more easily overlooked,
Also, a guy like Williams may be better to have on hand because he has NFL experience -- rather than two untested guys in both Hill and Taylor.
It seems to come down to Williams versus Taylor, unless we can keep them both on at least the practice squad.
This is where we have to hope the coaches in communication with the general manager have properly evaluated our guys over the last month in the preseason games plus the practices.
Kurt Benkert and Reggie Begelton are a couple of others I'm reluctant to lose to other teams.

I would think a player on the Packers who has been with us for two season and put forth a good showing this preseason deserves the respect of knowing why he isn't wanted.
To dismiss him so casually seems cold-hearted.
How about stepping up, jannes, with some decent explanation for your apparently shallow and insensitive remark.

I see no way another NFL team takes Benkert, a journeyman practice squad player and cuts another player off the 53.

Benkert was available even after the Packers signed Borltes....even then after a tryout and was signed as a camp arm.

He makes the PS if the Packers do not see a better QB development project on tomorrow's waiver wire.

Al left 5 spots open. He named 11 to the PS, there are 16 spots. Benkert makes it 4 most likely. I don’t think it’s unlikely that we pick up a few based on Gute’s record.

I don’t think we risk much getting Bagelton to the PS. If healthy he will be behind Winfree anyway unless they need a punt returner.

I favor keeping Taylor because he’s a hard yards back who can fill in if Dillon is hurt. Williams is more a Jones type as is Hill.

Van Lanen over Nijman. Cole can fill in at both tackle and guard. The experiment called Nijam should be ended.

Van Lanen got manhandled at guard against depth players. He’s not close to ready. If they like his potential he goes to the PS.

I hate to disagree. But everyone here has Sterberger wrong. He's just in a bad state of mind. We were all down on Jones after he was suspended. I believe Sternberger is over the injuries. But the cloud over his head, is the suspension. I hope they give him more time. St Brown is another I'd like to see stay. But his injuries have sealed his fate. Too bad. He will play for somebody. I'm keeping Benkrt.

I'm expecting Bahk to start the season on the PUP. AFIAK, the Packers haven't taken him off yet and if he's not ready why not use the roster spot to keep someone. Players can come off the PUP at any time.

In preseason, yes, they can be activated at any time, but if they're on the PUP to start the season, they can't practice for 6 weeks, after which you have a narrow window to raise them to the active roster or move them to IR.

Al's projecting that they'll activate Bakhtiari, keep him on the 53, then move him to IR after cutdowns (and sign a player to replace him) where he's out a minimum of 3 games, but could come back any time after that. In the end: not ready to play now, but not wanting to lose him for 6-8 weeks.

When the season starts, he would have to be added to the regular-season PUP list, which requires him to miss 6 games.

This is always a fun exercise but I have to say the cuts and keeps this year in the defensive backfield is quite uninspiring. Once you get past the starters there is little to get excited about. Maybe Henry Black but that's about it. Who really cares which "can't cover/can't tackle" d-backs the Packers keep.

Good job Al, pretty much agree with both your 53 and the PS. I think they have kept Burks for STs. I would have given Wilborn a shot on the 53 over Burks.

I hope that we actually see the end of the ESB and Dexter Williams experiments come Tuesday.

Of course it's possible that we see a few more moves before the season starts. If we go for another punter we need to do it by Wednesday at the latest to give him or maybe another player already on the team time to work as the holder for Crosby.

Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Josh Avery makes the practice squad. I think Gutey liked what he saw of Avery. Cut him early knowing he wouldn't make the 53 and didn't want any more tape out there for the rest of the NFL to see.
I also think it's why he took a flyer on Denmark and Abdullah thinking other GM's may be doing the same.

I’d like to see more of him. I was mildly shocked that they let him go based on potential, but I don’t think it’s likely Gute agrees.

Mostly I agree with Al, and I'm not going to "predict," rather I'm going to say who I would keep. Basically it's the same as Al's, but I replace Rivers with Garvin (this was close but he's three years younger), Uphoff with Benkert (I think he looks just as good as Love which is too valuable to risk), and Ento with VanLaanen (they are already 5 deep at CB).

The key to these cuts for me are who will they keep to make the
special teams better it is the achilles heel of this squad. We know who the starters will be but putting together a collection of players who are consistent in their assignments has apparently been a difficult thing to do and it can't just be the coaching. Maybe punting JK Scott would be a good start.
