Minicamp and Exciting Rookies
By kevinmooney
Which rookies have you most excited for this upcoming season? After rookie mini camp and a glimpse into the personalities of the new arrivals, Packers fans can begin pondering how the new guys will look in the beautiful green and gold game uniform. Packers fans can begin to connect with the new Packers players.
For me, it is a toss up between Kevin King and Josh Jones. Not only because the secondary was abused last season, but they really appear to be elite athletes.
I think the Packers would have drafted Kevin King regardless of which receiver had a huge hand in ending their season, but the way I see it is Kevin King has been drafted as the antidote to Julio Jones. Each player has a rare blend of size and speed. I was in attendance at the NFC Championship Game in Atlanta in January and it left a mark on how I viewed the Packers. They desperately needed an athlete at the cornerback position.
King also demonstrated the ability to play aggressively, coming up against quick screens and passes in the flat. Perhaps it was due to injury, but Damarious Randall showed a serious hesitancy to do the same last season.
With King lining up on the outside, of course there will be mental errors and growing pains, but I do not fear that any receiver he lines up across will be head and shoulders a better athlete. He won’t be dominated from lacking the physical tools.
I got excited reading that Josh Jones was working with the inside linebackers in some drills during mini camp.
As many have noted, Jones is likely to be used in multiple ways with his blend of size and speed. He weighs 220 lbs and runs 4.4. That’s something.
With Jones playing near the box, he can of course help against the run but also he should give the Packers insurance with some tough tight ends and running backs running routes out of the backfield. He has the size for tight ends and the quickness to handle running backs.
I view these two players as thorough upgrades in athleticism for the Packers’ defense. As I continue to try and maintain level-headed expectations for the rookie class, I’m also not trying that hard all the time.
How are you all feeling about the rookies at this point? Who has you excited?
Happy Sunday and Go Pack Go.

After looking at his film....I'll take Mays. He's big and has some wiggle. If he can stay healthy, I think we will see some tired defenses in the 4th qtr.

He does seem the most gifted of the 3 rookie backs; biggest, strongest, fastest. Keep him healthy and watch him roll!

But I still have a problem with that after last year. Are we going to see the same thing that happened with Adams , Jared and Janis. Do we start the most talented, or give the guy with the higher draft status 3 years. (Even though a guy looks great on film.) Williams will be GIVEN the starting nod with 3 years to develop. The RB position is a little different than WRs, as far as being favored by A-rod. But I feel you'll still see Williams get the starting nod because of draft status.

i think its an open competition and the best guys get the job. if draft status was the primary reason for playing time, this team would be in the dumpster.

What are you talking about? Adams is obviously the best receiver out of Janis, Jared and him. The Packers were right and you were wrong for calling out Janis or Abby to start over Adams. Adams has had 2 great years out of 3 and the bad year he had he battled injuries

Stockholder has had it in for Adams from the start...very actively anti-Adams. To the same degree that Taryn is "anti-Perry".

Dobber hold on here a second. Adams dropped more passes than any other Wr drafted by the packers. He also was a flop at returning kicks. Janis was ready to make the jump and everyone started the Janis train, but me. Adams finally showed something last year. So we let Williams or other RBs drop passes now? At least for 2 years. I think you understand where I'm coming from. Draft status is the top priority with TT. Not FAs ,or late round picks. ( You don't justify taking a player high, that gets out played, by a player who wasn't picked by your scouting team.)

I mean come on... do you really think where the RB's were drafted is going to effect who will win the starting job? May the best RB win and I believe that's what will happen. You can't get caught up on measurables being the end all be all for if someone should see the field. Hell Jamarcus Russel had the best measurables of any QB, how'd that turn out.

Honestly, other than seeing if Jamaal Williams can do with the Packers what he did in college, it's impossible to pick.
I don't remember a year that had so many interesting rookie ball carriers (WR/RB/QB). Often, we don't get to see the non-ball carriers during TV coverage, since the camera follows the ball. We'll gt to actually see the rookies in real time!

Looking at the relative athleticism of the Packers picks, it's clear they paid a TON of attention to that, in this draft. The one drafted guy ranked least athletic by a large margin, was RB Jamaal Williams.
I am therefore particularly interested in Jamaal, because the Packers were happy throwing away their draft pick bible, for this pick. They saw something that persuaded them to pick him anyway, and I want to see what that was.
Second most interesting pick (for me) was Montravious Adams. A D line that rotates (among others) Daniels, Clark, Lowry and Adams with Francois helping out where needed, sounds like a solid group to me.
Position group with the toughest competition, hmm, corner, linebacker (inside and out) and receiver, are strong contenders.

Tough to pick:
King, Jones, Adams, and Biegel on D; and my hope is for at least ONE of the 3 rookie backs to really shine.

I believe that Foreman was going to be the Packers pick at #93, but he went 4 picks earlier to Houston. They probably should have traded up to get him. Now, they're stuck with Adams and three so-so backs.

I would rather look at it as they're "stuck" with ARod, a relatively untested Monty, and 3 later round backs.

This feels like the first draft in a LONG time that TT didn't "reach" for his first couple picks. They let the draft fall to them.
The athleticism of the defense got a LOT better last week. Hopefully, King, Jones and Biegel are instant contributors. Or at least 1 of them. That would go a LONG way towards improving the D.

Most exciting is by far Josh Jones. The guy could become a huge part of this D if the cards fall right. But this season, I'm putting my money on Williams to shine the most. Partial because RB is one of the easier positions for a rookie to pick up, but I also think he's got the "IT" factor. Just runs like a football player. I absolutely love Monty, but by seasons end, I expect Williams to be the primary back with 88 as the versatile dual threat guys on 3rd downs.

I'm jumping on the Montay Crockett train. I've wanted AR to have a guy that could take the top off the defense. Jordy has been the deep threat for a long time, but it seems like he was getting caught from behind last year. So, it's been a couple of years.
Hopefully, he can figure out how to run a route unlike the other guy with blazing speed (ahem... Jeff Janis).
Check out this stat-line: Montay Crockett: 6'1 195 WR/KR/PR/DB/ST shuttle: 3.95 vert: 40 broad: 10'7 40yd: 4.29L 225reps: 20

For me there are 4 players I am really excited about, mostly because I think they will get the most playing time early. King, Josh Jones, Williams and Aaron Jones.
King could be a starter right away, but at the very least he will be in the Dime. He will play early.
Josh Jones might be the most intriguing draft pick. Definitely the most athletic. With Jones the biggest question we have about him is how are they going to use him. From the sounds of it from this weekend it sounds like they will be using him as a Hybrid ILB/Safety. He will likely be used a lot in subpages.
Both Williams and Jones have a huge opportunity at RB. Williams is a perfect compliment to Montgomery. Jones is similar to Montgomery. The more videos I watch of Williams and Jones the more I like. I think Both could have an impact on the field.

Im 100% with on you Mays. Watch the guys feet, they are shockingly fast feet for a guy his size and he can cut on a dime. He's like a cross between Darren Sproles and Michael Turner. It's crazy he was still available in the 7th round. Now I know why they took 3 RBs, because even after drafting 2 guys for the position, this guy was just too damn good to pass up.
Would like to see MM put Mays at KR at some point just to see what he can do there.

I will go with UDFA 6.5 to 6.7 (different sources clims different size!) high WR Michael Clark from Marshall. I watched some tape on him and iz looks like development WR who can become important to go guy. He can jump and get the ball at every occasion. It will be interesting what Packers can get from him. And if that will be enough to be at least PS guy...

I'm excited about all of them, even the UDFA Punter they signed. After seeing Jones in a shirt & tie at the draft and again in the picture posted above he definitely needs to hit the weight room some. He did 11 reps on the bench which is more than I would have guessed when looking at him. But he's also the most exciting prospect Ted has drafted in a while IMO.
Josh Jones is almost as exciting simply because the Packers may FINALLY have a player who can keep opposing receivers from running through the middle of the field wide open. If Brice progresses the Packers suddenly have 2 players who can really hit.
On offense I like Williams and Dupre. I really think Dupre could turn out to be a gift in the 7th round. If you look at his combine it's almost identical to Adams numbers. Both had 39 1/2 vertical jumps. Dupre ran a 4.52 and Adams ran a 4.51 40. Adams had a better 3 cone, Dupre a better long jump. Watching Dupres film he's excellent catching the ball, especially a deep ball. Good things are coming this year for the Packers rookies.
Vogel... PLEASE let Vogel average 47 yards a punt and be a solid holder. I'd really appreciate a solid ST game this season. Crosby will be fine, will our punter?

I really like Jones. The more I watch from him the more I like. I think he could be a real asset as a pass catching/change of pace RB.
He will be an ideal fit for the offense in the shotgun which they like to run a lot.

Someone compared him to Warrick Dunn at one point, which (based on Dunn's career) might be a little much to expect. But I think he brings some of the same characteristics to the table. He's a little bigger, but Dunn was competitive college sprinter, too.
Still, of the three backs, I'm the most intrigued by Jones.

I saw that comparison to Warrick Dunn. I saw another person compare him to Dujuan Harris.
He kind of reminds me of James White especially with how he can be used in the receiving game.

Not all of these guys will be good players, but I feel like almost all of them have a chance to be good players. Maybe this was just that good of a draft year, but even in the later rounds I feel like TT found guys with a real chance to contribute. And I agree with the sentiment that it didn't feel like the Packers had to reach at the top of the draft this year. The way the board fell and the way the class was stacked the Packers were practically handed two physically gifted DBs. When the Packers drafted Randall and Rollins my first reaction was, "Trust TT." When the Packers drafted King and Jones my first reaction was, "Wow, these guys are athletes."

I agree.
I think every one of these players has a chance to make the roster at the very least.
While Dupre and Mays might be longer shots to make it, I think they have a good chance to.
I think a number of these guys have a really good chance to contribute as well.

I can say I'm not surprised that many are excited about this year's rookies. For the first time in awhile, TT's needs were the same as the strength of this draft. Even if we are casual fans, most know what has happened over the past two years. They now see a team that's adding key players and see what they can be....

For me, it's Adams and Dupre.
I can't wait to see how Montravious responds to having Sergeant Daniels barking orders. Nothing teaches consistency like a consistent voice in your ear demanding your best.
As for Dupre, he could pave the way out of town for guys like Allison and Janis. It all depends on how well he absorbs the coaching.
King seems pretty set in stone; he'll start because we literally have no one else physically capable of covering outside #1 receivers. He'll make plenty of mistakes, but if all talented 2nd rounders entered the league with perfect technique, why would we have coaches?

May 08, 2017 at 09:35 am
I just hope King and Jones get on the field early and often. I'd rather see those guys learn and make rookie mistake than watch the Keystone Cops get shredded on a weekly basis. If Randall and Rollins can stay healthy then put the best players on the field regardless of how long they've been around.

May 08, 2017 at 09:57 am
I don't care which RBs or WRs we keep as long as they are the best. We probably can sneak one of each on to the PS too. It's good to have such a dilemma for a change. This is how draft and develop SHOULD work. Now if we can just build our defense to that level too.

I wonder if Randall and Rollins might do better when filling lesser roles.

May 08, 2017 at 10:15 am
King's success is the most crucial IMO and not just because he was the first pick. As I look at the roster I think there are only three players on the roster we can realistically expect to excel at outside CB: King, House and Randall. I hope King can earn the role of #1 CB by the end of the season.
Josh Jones has the potential to fill a long-time need in the middle of the defense but I expect it'll take him some time because there's more involved than there is for King at outside CB.
Like Peth, I'm looking forward to see how Adams responds to the NFL and Daniels in particular. Adams reportedly tore up the Senior Bowl so the physical talent is there. I think the biggest knock on him is motivation and Daniels could provide that.
Nick Perry, you may want to lower your expectations of Vogel. In three seasons at Miami his highest average was 43.8 yards. His strengths are hang time and being a directional punter, not distance - like Schum. I'm not saying Vogel won't win the job, but I don't think he's the strong-legged punter you're looking for.

Right now I almost feel overwhelmed by the talent of our new guys. Its hard to pick one. Like others have posted, everybody but one was a real athlete testing wise.
Like 4zone, I think the defensive picks will help improve R&R in the secondary and I think we "Mays" have a power running game again.

I have been sooo excited every year for the last 12 with "limited outcomes" as regards impact players!!! I guess I'll take a wait and see approach but, for some reason, I have a different feeling about this year's draftees. There was some talk here last week, or whenever, that Elliot was the true drafter and that opinion wasn't too well received! I didn't give those comments much validity, however, the more I look at whom we've drafted this year, including the positions they're playing, it's NOT that far of a reach!!! How have we kept Wolfe around after he was considered the TOP CANDIDATE for another teams GM? Can a team afford 2 highly compensated GMs that are sure to have their own preferences regarding players? How do the conflicts get resolved? Many questions... lots of potential answers. I have a feeling that TT is allowed to keep his title and ACT as the main man when he may just be dancing while someone else pulls his strings!!! Just askin' and sayin'... ps, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!!!!!

I'm always stoked about all our draft choices every year, but this one seems special (in a good way). I think TT picking up the two FA tight ends and adding Evans at RG just before the draft made this one of the first drafts in a while where BAP and need were in perfect harmony. For me, Josh Jones is the most interesting pick just because he may be a "sharper" Swiss army knife than Micah Hyde was (loved Micah's play, he just didn't have enough athleticism to match his instincts). I keep looking at King and can't believe he's 200 pounds, he just looks way thinner than that. I'm intrigued by him, but I think I'm the most interested in how they use Josh Jones. Also, excited about the potential matchups with the two FA tight ends on offense. This year just has that (dare I say it) Super feeling about it.

He's been released and is available to sign with anyone if he's healthy and wants to play. I think the fact that a fairly young, productive CB who wants to play can't find work says a lot.
