Mike Pettine will not return as Packers defensive coordinator

NFL Network reports his contract will not be renewed.

From Pelissero:

Matt LaFleur kept Pettine after the defensive meltdown in last year's NFC Championship game.

Pettine undoubtedly went into the final year of his deal in 2020 knowing his defense needed to show major improvement, something that didn't materialize early on this season. But his unit did play much better as the season wore on. Of course, the touchdown given up at the end of the 1st half in the NFC Chgampionship game last Sunday may have wiped all that improvement from LaFleur's mind.

Earlier today, safety Adrian Amos expressed surprise at that call and said he regretted not calling a time out to ensure the defense was in the correct call:

Pettine will now hit a job market where many of the jobs are already filled and LaFleur will try to find a new defensive coordinator from that same talent pool.

Thank God.

Go big or go home. Time to get better. I'm sick of a defense that you can count on giving up a 30 burger in every damn playoff game.

I agree. But, I hope BG can get our new DC another CB, that can play press or off coverage, and can be relied upon to not only make plays in front of themselves. King was better at plays in front of himself and wasn't good at anything else. This was one of the reasons that Pettine had him playing 8 yards off the receiver. Being able to jam and run with the receiver helps out our pass rushers. Playing soft coverage doesn't. Look no further than the NFC championship game last week

A fact currently overlooked is King was the 'last CB standing' in the final half of the season. That's strictly on Gute on not moving sooner to back up the position knowing his draft and FA moves had failed. But if King had not played well at the boundary, the Packers would not have gotten to the NFC championship game again.

So glad the Packer organization saved $ by “encouraging” MLF to keep Mike Pettine on until his contract ran out after this season.

Who cares if Pettine was actually Mike McCarthy’s guy as the defensive coordinator and who could blame a corporation for not wanting to pay Pettine to not coach in 2019 and 2020?

Between keeping Pettine for 2 more years after MM was fired and shrewdly not overpaying MLF’s personal choice for Special Teams coordinator in 2019 (Darren Rizzi) and instead going with bargain basement Shawn Mennenga, the organization undoubtedly save $millions for its shareholders.

What more could a Packer shareholder want but a management team that is always looking out for the financial bottom line?

Well done front office, well done.

With MM departure the money he was paid minus what ML is paid saved them several million per year. Enough for the best ST coach Darren Rizzi with money to spare. I really like the Packers accountability to their Board of Directors...........Bean counters can't be in charge of anything ....ever. The less power they have the better. NFC North Champs or bust.

You do realize that the Packers paid Mike McCarthy $8M+ to NOT COACH in 2019, right?

And that they also paid additional millions of dollar to all those great Mike McCarthy assistant coaches, who were not retained like Ron Zook and Winson Moss, not to coach in 2019, right?

The Pack went cheap with the coaches in 2019, paid the price on the field with crappy special teams coordinated by Mennenga and underperforming defenses coordinated by Pettine the following 2 seasons, and now, hopefully, MLF will be permitted to, finally, hire his guys.

Money well spent as long as they are gone. MM made 8 m, ML 5 m. 5/5/5 vs. 8/8/8. Close to a push, as long as MM gone . Sometimes you have to eat a little to come out better. A few million should not keep a good organization from having competent coaching. Being cheap only fields incompetent leaders.

With the money most of these coaches make, location does not matter much to them in the big picture. When you are a multimillionaire you have easy access to visit nice climates whenever your not working.

If family concerns make for a hard NO, just man up and decline the interview.

I have a hard time believing the family story.

All coaches and their wives understand the nature of the profession. High rewards, long hours, movement is inevitable.

Three Phases of FOOTBALL; every play in a Game, Matters. This third world approach to the Field Position strategy reveals boatloads in the lack of commitment by Packertown to win the Big Game. The offense brings the momentum back on their side in the third quarter and sp teams give up a 42 yard return to kick the defense in the guts.

Jerry Gray is the name I have heard bandied around.

Gray was the defensive coordinator for the Bills from 2001 to 2005, His D was good till his last season, ranking 2nd in total defense in 2003 and 2004. That’s nearly 20 years ago though and football has changed.

I’d like to see a LaFleur type on D; innovative, aggressive D that confuses opponents. Not sure Gray would bring that at this point.

Wouldn't be a bad idea except Gray ran a 4-3 defense and our personnel is 3-4. We might be able to pull it off though. I would stress that anyone balking at Gray look at his resume. Man coordinated 2 #2 defenses in Buffalo. I believe top 10 while in Tennessee. The not so great years just look at his talent level and you understand. I'd like him and I have to think that was a discussed topic to get him to sign with us with Pettines contract up at the end of the season.

Get a couple D linemen in the draft, CB with a high pick and play 4-2/4-3 fronts like Spags and Big Bad Bill. They have the personnel. Lancaster is a DT , not a 3-4 DE, neither is Lowry. He would be closer to Kampman as a 4-3 DE.
Gary and Za can play up or down. No reason not to be multiple and the 3-4 scheme can stay for some looks.

I'll wait for a statement from Gute on this one. Pettine was in a contract year, and maybe he decided to walk. Well, the friction between Lafleur and Pettine was too much in house. Still, the weight sits firmly on Lafleur now, no more excuses. Johnny Gray as DC is likely with how late this happened. Oh, and let's not forget, Lafleur is now in his contract year. Things getting interesting at 1265...

Shouldn't have been that surprised LH, there were a couple of warning signs over the last 12 months. There was the quickly covered over "delay" in affirming that Pettine was coming back after the 2019 season ended and then MLF publicly calling out Pettine for the play call on the TD right before halftime of the NFCCG this year. Those kinds of things don't happen in a relationship that is working well.

Yes, the record was good and there had been improvement in the defense over Pettine's three years, but there were public signs the relationship was not good. And that usually works out the way it just did.

The Mennenga firing was obvious, the DC less so. You are correct that it will be a gamble hiring a new DC, but nonetheless a risk that MLF is clearly willing to take. And that in itself is confirmation that the relationship was no longer constructive.

Let's remember that Pettine had played out his contract here, so not resigning might be a more mutual decision between Gute and Pettine. Normally the Packers would have had their season ending pressers by now. But with the ST firings and Pettine leaving, the front office has more than enough to do. Still, I'm surprised that Gute has not said a word. One gets the impression that there is more going on here than meets the eye. (How solid is Matt Lafleur position in Green Bay? With two coaching fails in the NFC champ game, one wonders...)

.
After improving Def. scoring by 5-6 PPG over the 2018 defense, after 2019, he turned down an offer to extend his contract. I'm surprised people more "in the know" than i am, haven't brought this up at all.

“ I'm not so sure making the defensive players re-watch last seasons NFCCG loss, was the smartest motivational tool he could use.”

I see your point about the timing of the re-watching (seeding doubt and fear of failure - over concentration on execution) however with essentially the same personnel group on the D, it should have (and probably was) a staple study reference throughout the year........ after all, almost every opponent used that technique to attack the Packers this year, so they knew that they’d darn well better be able to defend it.

On not re-hiring Pettine - I think that MLF’s mind was made up to move on from Mike Pettine after the Colts loss. He was so honest in agreeing with the reporter who asked the question as to why the DB’s were behind the down marker on 3rd and long (and how bad it looked), that at the time I thought that it could only be political positioning. MM wouldn’t have even answered the question, but MLF was like ‘yes, it was terrible, wasn’t it’.

To the point of bone-headed play design - MLF, Slocum and AR need to go away and do their homework on why they squandered 3 turnovers, with not 1 of them for a score. Equally egregious (in my book). Jones getting hurt and not returning to the game was possibly the defining factor here - no more play action improv’s to stretch the defenses and create short yardage options to move the sticks made GB 2 dimensional.

Nasty has to come from the players.

No amount of vocal gymnastics from a coach can make a player play nasty, they have to have it in them from the get go.

The draft is the place to find some Nasty for the defense. Look no further than the Washington Football Team and Chase Young to see how a committed rookie can become an instant leader for a team that needs one.

GBP just have to identify the right guy and then go get him. This goes far beyond one players' worth, as the right guy will elevate many teammates performances.

A lot easier to do when you have the 2nd overall selection of the draft as opposed to drafting near the bottom of every round.

I would like the nasty provided it doesn't come in the form of a bunch of personal fouls at inoportune times! The low number of penalties for the 2020 Packers was a boon that was rarely talked about.

Looks like there are teams still out there looking at Wade Phillips. Now that would be a good choice. Lets hope that Matt has been looking already before he fired Pettine.

Wade Phillips? No way he is past this era and has no fire in the belly.

As I've stated in a reply. Our defensive coordinator may already be on the roster. Gray is a well respected Defensive Coordinator and his defenses for the most part were really good. The years they weren't he was lacking talent. Now I'd welcome anyone who won't call single high safety with 8 seconds left in the half and the other team clearly going for points and not just 3.

He went from DC to being a CB coach, his ship has sailed. Remember Pettine was out of football for a couple years, trying to figure out the new game. Time for new blood.

Please not Gray. He was one of the defensive back coaches, and they sucked.

Last year, at the end, when many of you called Pettine head, I told you that he will walk after this season. He said in his very first interview after signing vontract with Packers that no coordinators should stay with team more than 3 years, because game evolve and teams need fresh ideas.

He shows us that he was talking the truth. And tjat he follows his philosophy.

This move should have happened when MLF took over team. Although I can understand keeping him for continuity reasons - he ultimately perpetuated the MM poor defensive-play hang over. A fresh coach on defense may have instilled a different attitude and possibly influenced draft selection as well.

Before he went back to NE Matt Patricia would have been my choice, I know look at his time in Detroit not good. But when he was in NE for years their defense was always right up their next they would say it was Bill that did the job, he may have helped but Patricia would have been an upgrade in GB. I just want a guy that has a handle on 3rd down, for past years 3rd down has completely killed them, smart stud ILB that commands respect of teammates is needed as well. The rooks certainly were ok little on the injured side but overall ok. Slot receiver and another run stopper. Sign another vet CB, King has left the building (hopefully) he can bring his stare down and back patting to another team too soft a player.

Where was the leadership. If Woodson would have been on the field, I'd bet my house he would have called a time out. Amos said he wished he had, Pettine didn't, HC didn't, King didn't, the clock was stopped WTF ..............WHY? They all are supposed to be professionals , did they not know WTF to do? No excuses in an NFCCG.

I would prefer a DC from outside the organization who has no loyalty to the existing defensive staff or players. Someone who will bring a sense of urgency to the defense on every play. Someone who sends a message to the staff and the players that if you don’t perform you’re gone.

We also need a DC who understands situational football and has his players prepared for it.

An inside guy could be OK but he is going to have his favorites, it’s only natural. If the Packers want to consider inside candidates they should hire a 3rd party to evaluate those candidates along with any outside candidates. My business partner and I did this for years when we needed to fill positions in our consulting company and it was one of the best decisions we ever made. I hope the Packers take their time and finally hire the right guy because allowing an of 35 points in the conference championship is never going to get us to the SB whether we have Rodgers, Favre, Marino, P. Manning, Montana, Unitas, Brady or Starr as our QB. Thanks, Since ‘61

The “inside” guy might have his favorites but I would think they also tend to be the best players. But a good take Since ‘ 61.

I don't know who it is but I want an aggressive DC , Someone who rattles the QB on every play , rush 4-5-6 , Jaire , and Savage back Greene and Amos in the box. Let Zee, Clark and Gary loose. First round in April get the biggest, fastest, baddest (available) MLB in the draft. Carry On !

Hey, at least Capers isn’t an option!

“The Lions announced Friday they have hired former Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans head coach Dom Capers as the team's senior defensive assistant.”

I feel sorry for Lions fans.

I don’t have any idea who to hire, just hope it’s someone outside the organization. Our D has been our achilles heal for years now, please take your time and pick the right guy.

As much as I'd hate to see Jimmy L leave the badgers, I think he's just what the pack needs. somebody that can take a roster of average talent, then teach, scheme and motivate them to outplay and outsmart the opponent. He changes schemes up week to week to attack opponents' weaknesses. He's not a rah rah guy, commands respect because he's been there and done that, very well. GPG

Going to take a heck of lot to pry him from Bucky. Besides, Pettine and him are close, so he knows what he would be getting into with Lafleur. I don't see it happening.

I was undecided about Pettine given the late season improvement. But I know that I like ML so I will trust he made the right call.

I'll also say that I don't buy into the excuse that Pettine didn't have the right players to win. He had more than enough talent. The next guy will have more than enough, too.
