Malik Willis Has Played His Way Out Of Green Bay
The Packers have the best backup quarterback in football...for now.
By Dan Saia
Jon Gurden once asked Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore why the team doesn’t give more practice snaps to Peyton Manning’s backups. He replied, “Fellas, if 18 goes down, we are screwed—and we don’t practice screwed.” That’s the feeling across a lot of teams in the National Football League. Backup quarterback might be the second most important position on the roster, right behind the starter. Imagine you have a Super Bowl–caliber roster and your starting quarterback goes down. All hope is lost and it’s better luck next year—unless you’re a team that values the backup quarterback position and uncovers every avenue to find a capable one. That’s where this current Green Bay Packers roster finds itself.
Malik Willis, since becoming a Green Bay Packer at the end of cutdowns in 2024 via trade with the Titans, has done absolutely everything asked of him and then some. If we didn’t already know it by his play last year in substitution for an injured Jordan Love, then this past Saturday was the final proof. He might be the most valuable backup quarterback in all of football, and unfortunately for the Packers, he has almost certainly played his way out of town.
On Saturday, once Jordan Love left the game with a concussion and Willis entered, I had the feeling all of the momentum had shifted over to Chicago. Nothing against Malik—he’s done everything asked of him and then some—but the Bears were playing the most important game at Soldier Field in years against their most hated rival in prime time. When a backup quarterback is suddenly under center, you know the opposing team is smelling blood. The issue is this isn’t a normal backup quarterback. In the two appearances this year subbing in for an injured Love, Willis is completing 85% of his passes with three touchdowns, no interceptions, and is sporting a 146.1 passer rating.
He fits the offense perfectly. With his combination of size, speed, and arm strength, head coach Matt LaFleur doesn’t have to change or alter his offensive game plan nearly as much as many head coaches do when a backup enters the game. If anything, one might argue it only opens up his playbook with more possibilities, seeing as Willis is a dangerous option with his legs.
The botched snap notwithstanding, the Packers likely should be 5–0 when Willis is playing meaningful snaps. The two wins against Indianapolis and Tennessee came in last season’s Weeks 2 and 3, when he had been in town for just a few days. He replaced Jordan Love after Love pulled his groin against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He didn’t light the world on fire in that game, but he did go 4 of 5 for 56 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 23 yards on four attempts and driving the team down for the game-winning field goal at the buzzer. The 2024 Packers don’t make the playoffs without Willis.
This season, while he hasn’t had as much of an impact thanks to Love being able to stay on the field at a higher rate, he did come in mid-drive and throw a dot to Christian Watson for a touchdown on the road against a pesky New York Giants defense. In a game that came down to the final plays, do the Packers win that game if Willis comes in and flops? Could you picture their playoff chances if they dropped that game in New York?
Then came Saturday—the biggest game of the year with the NFC North on the line—and Willis walked into the game like he’d been the starter all season. He went 9-for-11 for 121 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 44 yards on 10 carries. Nothing mind-blowing—you’re not going to get elected to the Pro Bowl with those numbers (Tyler Huntley?)—but if you put your team in a position to win the game, which he did, that’s all you can ever ask of your backup. Especially considering the amount of reps he gets during the week.
Last week, while preparing for Caleb Williams and the Bears, Willis barely took any snaps with the first-team offense, instead playing Williams on the scout team to help prep the defense.
“It’s a tough deal,” LaFleur said of Willis preparing each week. “A lot of it is on the individual, just making sure you’re studying the plays.”
The Packers are going to face an interesting decision this offseason when it comes to Malik Willis. There’s almost no doubt they would want him back—why wouldn’t they? The issue is there are certainly going to be plenty of other teams with more cap space and a better opportunity to start that will also want his services. As of right now, the team’s projected salary cap is going to be tight. There are some moves that will of course be made, such as restructures, extensions, and releases (“cough Rashan Gary cough”) that will free up space, but there is only so much a team can allocate to a backup quarterback when they are paying Jordan Love $220 million.
There could be a world where the Packers offer Willis one of the highest salaries for a backup—say around $8–10 million on a two-year deal—but if his desire is to be a starter, there are certainly going to be better options out there for him that the Packers can't match. The good news is they should pick up a comp pick for him in 2027 though.
Based on his play and his ability to fit into a system as popular and well-run as Matt LaFleur’s, Miami would be the perfect spot for Willis. The two best fits I see right now are Miami and Pittsburgh. Reports have it that the Dolphins are going to cut ties with Tua Tagovailoa this offseason, and they don’t have anyone waiting in the wings on that roster. Currently holding the 10th pick and with a depleted roster, they might be better off trading that pick for more selections and rolling with Willis. I’m sure Mike McDaniel could develop a strong game plan around him, and he will need to win to save his job.
What about replacing Rodgers in Pittsburgh if he retires? That team loves to run the football, and Willis is a read-option nightmare for defenses.
The reality is Willis has played too well to be a backup in Green Bay in 2026. He will almost certainly get a better deal and a real chance at starting elsewhere, so we should enjoy him while he’s here. The Packers are likely looking at a training camp competition between Clayton Tune and a draft pick for the right to be Jordan Love’s backup next season and beyond and Willis’s name will be added to the long list of backups in Green Bay who go on and be starters elsewhere.

If he wants a chance to start in a super-competitive atmosphere, then Pittsburgh is the perfect place for him. There will be high expectations, so he had better be ready for that spotlight.
What we don't want to see is him signing with the Vikings and throwing darts to Jefferson... Sometimes J.J. is good, sometimes he is not, and is injury-prone to boot. The Vikings are a team historically not proficient in developing young quarterbacks, and here is one that is a good ways there and relatively inexpensive. O'Connell is also a very good QB tutor. I hate to say it, but like many an ex-Packer, he could end up in Minnesota.

Pittsburgh or Miami are BOTH much better destinations for him, but I do hope we get to keep him.

Willis has done everything we've asked and more. Could he pull one more rabbit out of his hat and beat Ravens if Love can't go? I wouldn't bet against him. And good luck to Malik wherever his career takes him.

I feel pretty, oh so pretty! Winning (from a foe), does that to a lumberjack kinda man.
Best game ever! Vikings get us in AND we don't concern ourselves with imploding in the last few minutes.

Re-signing Malik This is all going to depend on 2 things - with the way that we are playing ( at different times - if are one and done but are showing a whole bunch of potential ( and I am really talking about our injure pieces) then maybe Willis might convince himself to stay. This will be especially so if he doesnt really think that a team that wants him is a mess ( ie Jets, Browns, etc). And if Gutey doesnt want him on a big contract. After all since we dont have a first rounder - we will have an extra $12 million that we dont have to spend - and for a few years of no 1's unless we bundle to trade up ( not likely).
So maybe just to be on a team that is likely going to have a better chance to get to the dance next year - might be an incentive for a guy to stay on a winning team and get a better chance with another team and still get paid. It will depend on whether he really wants to be a starter next year or stay the way that it is.

Where Malik plays next year only depends on one thing: who's giving him the most guaranteed $.
He's no dummy. He's an American.
He has to take care of himself and those he loves.
Unless he's independently wealthy, staying in GB for less $ just for a shot at the super bowl is ludicrous.
I'm thankful for the way he's carried the G and wish him health and prosperity in 2026.

He wants/ needs and should be paid his money - I am not saying that- but and it might just happen - is he going to get a big long contract -- what is the number - I am saying that the Pack can give him - at least 12 million plus whatever extra the other team is asking if it is only a one year show me type of contract. Looking at Sportrac - only the elite are making the big bucks - Dan Jones is off his rookie and only gets $14 after a good season - So we could afford that . As far as the Superbowl - Willis knows he is only one play away from playing and on a team that is pretty close one the injured players come back - he might want to continue doing what he is doing unless the motherload comes his way - and when you look at what the other players with great seasons have had - it would take a pretty desperate team to offer Darnold or Geno Smith money unproven for a season. But who knows.

Willis is more mobile than Love, his routine throws are more accurate than Love's, he seems also to have more zip on the ball. Since the organization will never admit it made if not quite a mistake with Love, then paying prime bucks for a mid-tier qb. Willis will be starting somewhere next year; I would prefer seeing him start for the Packers, but not ain't going to happen. I am probably jinxing him and he will throw 4 pics this Saturday

I have said this same exact thing on here,to a chorus of boos, would there really be a big drop off if Malik was qb1 I don't think so & how much better would the overall roster be minus Loves bloated contract & more pics?

Willis will start somewhere next year. I hate to see him go but the team should get a nice comp pick for '27. Finding an adequate backup somewhere becomes the issue. when you look at the potential dreck out there to fill that void. it's a bit scary. Either a green rookie from the lower end of the draft, or an older interception machine like Geno Smith or Marcus Mariota....to distressing to consider. Maybe someone from the UFL. I wish Malik the best.

he is not the back up, he is the real starter but he can't start because gutey gave 55 millions to love so love has to play to save gute's ass.

I look at it this way. Willis has shown enough that I’d be concerned about what he could do against us with a good enough team around him. He’s shown the ability to win games through the air and with his feet and, importantly from the pocket and without making mistakes.
If I were a GM needing a QB, I’d look at this draft class, at the likely FA class and sign Willis in a heart beat, knowing he can win games now and be relatively affordable for a non first contract QB who can do that.
I sincerely hope that is not how the Vikings see him, but he’d be an upgrade over at least 2 North QBs in my opinion next season and maybe career wise as he’s not old and should still improve with playing time. There are 2 North teams alone that I think become better now if you sub him in to start for them in a game played today.

As someone who is still bitter about the loss of the love of my life, Aaron Rodgers, i will eternally resent Jordan Love and all who promoted him over God’s gift to mankind . What’s more, i will always believe $PACKER_BACKUP to be better than that schlub Jordan Love. That is my creed.
