Maggie’s Pre-Game Six Pack - 2023 Week 17

The 7-8 Packers, still in the thick of the NFC playoff picture, head to Minnesota this weekend to face off against the 7-8 Vikings on New Year’s Eve. It’s the first time Green Bay has played on three holidays in the regular season. Here are six things to keep in mind heading into the NFC North clash on Sunday Night Football.

1. A lot to Love

In the second half of the season, Jordan Love has finally put the debate to rest. Yes, he is a franchise quarterback. He’s posted a rating over 108.0 in five of his last six games, throwing 13 touchdowns with only one interception in that span.

On the season, Love has thrown for 3,587 yards with 27 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, giving him a rating of 91.8. Those 27 touchdowns are tied for third in the NFL behind only Dak Prescott (30) and Brock Purdy (29). His 3,587 yards rank 13th in the league.

What’s impressive about Love’s numbers is the company he’s keeping. Both Prescott and Purdy have 1,000-yard receivers on their teams (and Purdy arguably has a small unit of Avengers on offense). Love is spreading the ball around to a ton of different players, with no receiver posting over 650 receiving yards. Still, Love is getting significant contributions from his weapons, and the offense has been incredibly productive without names like Aaron Jones, Christian Watson, and Jayden Reed in the lineup.

While Watson hasn’t practiced yet this week with his hamstring injury, Reed returned to action in a limited capacity. It’s also worth noting that rookie tight end Luke Musgrave has been designated to return from injured reserve and has returned to practice this week, too. It’s unclear if he’ll be available on Sunday, but the fact that he’s practicing is significant. Having both Musgrave and Tucker Kraft on the field at the same time would be electric in Head Coach Matt LaFleur’s two tight end sets.

2. Breathing Life into the Backfield

Speaking of Jones, he had a season-best performance against the Panthers in Week 16 and became the first 100-yard rusher for the Packers all season (yes, in Week 16). Against Carolina, Jones rushed 21 times for 127 yards, giving him an average of 6.0 yards per carry.

Those numbers are coming at a good time, too. Per the dope sheet, Jones has four games with 100-plus scrimmage yards against the Vikings dating back to 2019, which is second in the NFL behind only Davante Adams with five. Those four games are two more than any other running back in the league has in that span against Minnesota.

Running back AJ Dillon also saw some action against the Panthers last week and punched into the end zone for only his second touchdown of the season. With 809 scrimmage yards, he still leads the rest of the offense by almost 100 yards (Reed is second with 711 yards).

The Vikings have a pretty stout run defense and are giving up only 95.4 yards on the ground per game. The unit ranks ninth in the league in yards (1,431) and 10th in touchdowns (11) on the season. They also rank fifth when it comes to yards per attempt, allowing only 3.7 yards per carry.

3. Late Season Skid

The Vikings have lost four of their last five games, with their lone victory coming 3-0 against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 14. That said, all four of Minnesota’s losses have been by one score, losing by one point to the Broncos, two points to the Bears, three points to the Bengals, and six points to the Lions.

This all comes after a five-game winning streak for the Vikings that put them in the thick of the Wild Card race in the NFC. The Packers have gone 3-2 in that same five-game stretch to cement their own status in the Wild Card hunt, but suffered a double-digit loss to the Buccaneers along the way.

The Vikings are averaging 16.2 points per game over their last five-game stretch (thanks largely to the clunker against the Raiders), while the Packers are averaging 10 full points more at 26.2 points per game in that same span. On the flip side of that, Minnesota’s defense is allowing only 18 points per game on average whereas Green Bay’s defense is giving up 23.8 points per game.

Earlier this season, the Vikings beat the Packers 24-10 at Lambeau Field. Per the dope sheet, the Packers have scored 30-plus points in two of their last three games in Minnesota. A shootout leans in Green Bay’s favor given recent trends, but relying on the Packers defense for anything as of late is a tough sell.

4. Splitting the Series

Since we’re already talking about trends in prior matchups, let’s look at the Packers and Vikings series as a whole. In LaFleur’s first season as head coach, he swept the Vikings 2-0. Since then, the Packers and Vikings have split the series each season.

In both 2021 and 2022, the Packers lost the first matchup and came back to win the second game in blowout fashion. (We can hope that trend continues in 2023). In 2021, the Vikings narrowly beat the Packers 34-31 in Week 11 before the Packers came back in Week 17 to win 37-10. In 2022, the Vikings dominated the season opener and won 23-7 before the Packers came back in Week 17 (again) to win 41-17.

This season, the Packers are 2-5 on the road while the Vikings are 2-5 at home. It’s the third straight season the Packers and Vikings are playing in Week 17. It’s also the fourth time in the last five seasons that the Packers will close out the season with back-to-back NFC North matchups.

5. Who’s at QB?

In Week 8, Kirk Cousins went 23-of-31 for 274 yards and two touchdowns against Green Bay’s defense, giving him a rating of 122.2. During the game, he suffered a torn achilles and was lost for the season, but his performance was enough to give the Vikings the division win. Since the injury, though, Minnesota has looked for a replacement at the quarterback position.

Initially, Joshua Dobbs looked like the answer and led the Vikings to two straight victories against the Falcons and Saints before coming down to earth in losses against the Broncos and Bears. Dobbs was benched against the Raiders with Nick Mullens replacing him, but now the quarterback spot is up in the air once again as Head Coach Kevin O’Connell has yet to name a starter for Week 17.

While Mullens threw for over 400 yards against the Lions in Week 16, he also threw four interceptions. He has six interceptions in his last two games which forced O’Connell to look in a different direction, namely at rookie quarterback Jaren Hall. Hall replaced Cousins briefly at the end of the game in Week 8 but hasn’t had the opportunity to start yet. He’ll make his first career start against the Packers in Week 17.

In spot duty this season, Hall has thrown for 101 yards with a long of 47 and has taken one sack. The former fifth-round pick out of BYU ended his collegiate career with 6,174 passing yards, 52 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a completion percentage of 65.2%. He also had 800 rushing yards and nine touchdowns with his legs.

6. Just Cover Jefferson

Whoever’s under center for the Vikings on Sunday night, they’ll benefit from having Justin Jefferson back in the lineup. Despite only playing in eight games, Jefferson still ranks third on the team in receiving yards with 823. Against the Lions last week, Jefferson hauled in six receptions for 141 yards and a touchdown, giving him a season-best average of 23.5 yards per catch. It’s the fourth time this year Jefferson has surpassed 140 receiving yards.

The Vikings did suffer a significant blow this week with T.J. Hockenson tearing both his ACL and MCL. He led the team with 95 receptions and 960 receiving yards, which was his career-high. What’s more, it’s possible (maybe even likely) that Minnesota won’t have rookie receiver Jordan Addison in the lineup, either. He leads the team with nine touchdowns and has 826 receiving yards, but he suffered an ankle injury against the Lions and has been unable to practice this week.

While cornerback Jaire Alexander is unable to play this week as he serves his one-game suspension, the Packers will have to rely on Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine to try to minimize Jefferson’s impact. He was on injured reserve when the Packers and Vikings met earlier this season, so this’ll be the first time he’ll see Green Bay this year. Jefferson has eclipsed 1,400 receiving yards in each of his first three NFL seasons and is still on pace for over 1,000 this year, despite missing seven games. If there’s one player Joe Barry’s defense needs to account for, it’s No. 18 (I know, I know).

What I’ll be drinking for the game:

Anything New Belgium is always a must-grab for me, especially if it’s a new Voodoo Ranger. This week I stumbled across Cryo Ranger, so that immediately went into the cart. Even though the Vikings play indoors, it still feels like a good, frosty vibe for a December football game between NFC North rivals.

Even though the Vikings are favored by a point, the Packers should win this game, but "should" and "will" are two different things with this spectacle of a defense we're witnessing. The Vikings, with their anemic running game, will be starting a QB who has only thrown 10 passes all year and will be without of the services of Hockenson and possibly Addison, both of whom had big games against us last time.

Protect Love, don't commit turnovers or an abundance of penalties, keep feeding Jones, and put the clamps on Jefferson and Osborn as best you can and we have a great shot of winning.

Can't say I'm looking too much forward to watching a football game on New Year's Eve night, but it would be worth it for a win. And no overtime please!

You realize you're asking for excellence in all the things this team (especially coaches) have been bad at? Add communication problems, and put them in a loud stadium; I wouldn't be surprised to see coverage breakdowns. Neither will I be surprised to see a backup TE have some success.

Pass rush is key. Meet at the QB is our D's best chance, I think. JL10 putting up 6 TDs would help ...

I am shocked the Packers are an underdog in this game, even if it is one point. I guess I have far more faith in the Pack those who bet on games.

The Vikes always give GB a game, and our D has a disturbing pattern of giving unknown and soon forgetten QBs their fondest NFL memory, but, really, MN's offense is done. If they get 13 points I'll be very surprised.

A Packers game is a pretty wild New Year's Eve for me. . . um . . . what I meant to say is that I have many sophisticated cocktail parties to choose from, but I'm staying home because of my devotion to the Packers ;-).

Every NFL Week I cheer for two teams...The Packers and whoever is playing the ugly purple.

Their fans are insufferable.
They act like their empty trophy case is loaded with bling.
That silly horn that sounds like a whale in heat is a joke deserving of punchlines.
They always have to shove Favre, Jennings, Z and other former Packers in your face ignoring that FA pipeline only goes one way. (However they have stopped bringing up Darin "Love Boat" Sharper)

But this year, what truly irks me is Brian Flores was hired to improve their awful defense after MLF sat on his hands and retained Barry Ball for "continuity".

If the Pack wins the game 49-48...I'm good! It will be a Happy New Year!

You’re wrong about Sharper. I see a guy in the grocery store occasionally wearing a purple No. 42 Sharper jersey. I haven’t seen him this year so maybe he moved, hopefully to Stillwater courtesy of the state of MN.

Flores is only on the Vikings sideline because of the abysmal hiring practices of the NFL. If there's a modicum of justice he'll be wearing the headset next year, not just coordinating a defense.

LambeauPlain, you forget that shallow, contrived skol nonsense in your list of insufferably dumb things they do. It was kind of cool when Iceland or Norway or whoever it was did it years ago, but in MN it is totally fake and lame.

"(However they have stopped bringing up Darin "Love Boat" Sharper)"

LP, don't confuse the Vikings "Love Boat" incident of 2005 with Darren Sharper being a convicted serial rapist. Sharper's been in prison since 2016 after being sentenced to concurrent sentences of around 20 years in multiple states. He's kickin' it in FCI Miami until at least late 2028. I wonder if he had a nice Christmas.

The "Love Boat" crew was Culpepper, Smoot, Burleson, Pat Williams and several other Vikings heroes paying for sex workers to party with them in rented houseboats on Lake Minnetonka in 2005. This was viewed as a step beyond "Minnesota nice" by the Swansons, Arnquists, Nelsons, and Hansons, and ultimately helped whomever was responsible for the sh*tstain that was/is the Minnesota Vikings to show Mike Tice the door, and usher in the Childress Era. Let's have a moment of silence for the Childress Era, shall we?

Yeah, Leotis...I know Sharper was not implicated in the 2005 Viking Love Boat Sex Sailing Adventure.

I listed the two together as 2005 was also the year Sharper was signed by the Ugly Purple after he was released by the Packers. He was probably "sailing" is secret with drugged up, unsuspecting women in undisclosed Minneapolis hotels that "summer of love".

What a complete piece of inhuman trash Sharper turned out to be.

The factors in the Vikings game will prove out to be can the Anemic Packers D scheme themselves with the available talent to stop 1 proven weapon, of this the jury is out. Unknown young QB's tend to be runners - we know what happens to the Green Bay D with running QB's. Brain farts abound on this squad hence the reason for the offense to keep the game from being close and not get away from what works, as they have a tendency to do. IE. play 4 quarters on offense not just 2. Any help from a forced turnover or 2 would be of immense help as well but they are scarce with this squad. A consistent determined pass rush might contribute to those turnovers, especially with a novice QB. Receivers need to catch anything close like they did against Detroit and KC. Just focus on the task in front of you and try to perform to perfection like Lombardi said, that way you catch excellence.

Since most of the guys on the field for us on defense are backups/rookies/UDFAs, I don't think we can go into Minnesota thinking 20 points are enough for us to win.

Fortunately, the offense is starting to look like they've practiced together. Including Thanksgiving, we've hit 20 in every game and 27+ in three of them. The team is protecting Love, and Love is protecting the ball. And now we've added Jones to the lineup.

IMO, we put points on the board, force the New Guy to beat us from the pocket under pressure.

The only greenhorn is Valentine and that was by choice with Gutey's trade. Owens and Savage were starters beforehand. Ballentine a journeyman. The front are all veterans. I like McDuffie inside. I wish Campbell would pair with him, but we get a guy who cannot diagnose an offensive look and lacks tackling ability. We will see who cares about Winning and those who ride a paycheck to the Caymans.

Quay plays well when he's allowed to be aggressive. That includes tackling! He's the team leader in tackles.

Where Quay is bad is dropping into coverage, and that's the whole team, which reflects scheme. They wind up playing catch, stopping the ball after a first down was gained. Let Quay play at the LoS and he winds up disrupting their backfield.

McDuffie brings the nasty, and has played better paired with Campbell.

An ILB who cannot blitz the A gap to the target. He has zero edge technique to move past OTs and the guy has 4.5
speed. His sets in the mid-hook zones are too deep and he doesn't come downhill fast enough=no play recognition. One scout wondered if he was a coach killer? He will be tasked with keeping an eye on the RBs. Chandler is a 4.3 guy, Mattison may , or may not play. Ham can come out of the backfield on the delay and break the middle. O'Donnell will be lighting it up regardless of his QB. HAll ran the Air Raid for BYU.

Johnson is a rookie at safety. Owens is journeyman UDFA type . The front is not the issue. We're talking about keeping people covered. We don't have NFL starters back there. We miss Stokes and Alexander and Savage.

I would rather have Valentine than Stokes out there, but Stokes will start opposite him. We don't know the starting Safeties until the injury report is declared on Saturday. Owens started for the Texans last season. The ringer is Nixon who showed some stability earlier in the year and is now targeted by the OCs. La Fleur should be in the secondary's meeting room this week, clarifying the fundamentals of defensive football like see purple, cover purple.

LH,

this is a game where bend don't break might be a reasonable strategy. We don't have anyone to go 1 on 1 vs Justin Jefferson, so a soft zone is probably the only chance to contain him. They don't even try to run. I don't know how that approach can mesh with prioritizing our pass rush, which I think is more effective than our coverage.

Unfortunately Brian Flores has their D performing above their talent level, which is exactly why we wanted him here. This would be a really good time to use Bo Melton as a direct substitute for #9, and Grant DuBose as a direct substitute for Wicks. I don't expect to see either. JL10 suddenly making all the easy layups would be great timing, and #33 on the receiving end of that would really help. #28 having a broken thumb hurts, he's been catching everything thrown his way. Continued improvement in run blocking would help, especially receiving the opening kickoff and establishing the run from the opening drive. MLF sustaining a balanced attack and AGNFB would be really nice to see ...

GPG!

That would have been i think pretty close to what the team needed to do against De Vito. Didn't work out. Same with Young, who had a career day. So the advice is sound but it is not what Joe's D can do.

I associate mobility with young QBs. After seeing so many mobile or semi-mobile QBs escape the pass rush and gouge the defense over the years, that it is always a concern.

1. Will the packers have a disciplined pass rush? When things go bad, those young QBs want to run
2. Sound tackling and aggression
3. DB communication
4. Defense getting stops on 3rd down
5. No stupid stuff on special teams

I am not really concerned about the offense. If they stay healthy, I think the offense will be fine.

I don't recall a packers defense giving up so many first downs after getting the offense in such long yardage situations like 2nd and 29, 3rd and 22, etc...

I was talking about down and distances where there should be no chance of offense making a first down like anything over 15 yards. There have been multiple first/second and 20+ yards to go that this defense has given up a 1st down.

Donatell dialed up a blitz with a rover on McNabb on that Call, which was effective containing and sacking him on previous long yardage downs. Sherman called it off for "prevent" D. Sherman also cut and ran on the 4th and one with three pro bowlers on the offensive line and punted the game away.

#2 only adds to the weakness of JB.

#3 is a problem, and this venue makes it harder.

#4 lol

Viqueens have a serious defense due to Brian Flores, who should be on our side. Be very concerned with our O, they will win this game if that happens. Hopefully JL10 gets 6 TDs.

Maggie:
As I have gotten older, the taste of the beer I drink as I watch the Packers has become more important than the game on the field (I can control the first, not the second). Alaskan Brewery (Juneau, AK) and Breckenridge Brewery both make an amber that is more flavorful than Fat Tire from (what appears to be your brewery of choice) New Belgium. I suggest you sample them when you have a chance.
