Josh Myers Presents Packers with Offseason Conundrum

Josh Myers' inconsistent play leaves Brian Gutekunst with a difficult decision to make.

Green Bay’s general manager Brian Gutekunst is facing several difficult decisions this offseason as he sets about constructing the 2023 Packers.

Of course, Aaron Rodgers Watch 3 gets all the headlines, but another key issue centers (get it?) around the player who has been snapping him the ball for the last two seasons: Josh Myers.

Myers’ play in 2022 has been the topic of much conversation, with Green Bay’s center enduring an inconsistent sophomore season. This has left many questioning whether the position needs to be addressed this spring.

This must be considered a disappointing turn of events for the Packers, who drafted Myers in the second round back in 2021, especially since Creed Humphrey, chosen one spot later, has gone on to quickly become one of the NFL’s top centers.

The Packers have three options. They can sign a veteran in free agency, use another draft pick at the position, or do nothing and hope Myers develops into the quality center they hoped for.

Like many decisions facing Gutekunst ahead of the 2023 campaign, the route he chooses to take could be different depending on who is Green Bay’s starting quarterback.

If Aaron Rodgers wants to come back for another year, and the Packers decide they want him to be their QB, bringing in an experienced center is not out of the question.

Knowing full well this may truly be Rodgers’ last ride, it would be logical for Gutekunst to do everything in his power to surround his ageing star with everything required to compete for a championship. This would represent a departure from their usual style, though.

The Packers are also cash-strapped after continuing to kick the ever-destabilising salary cap can down the road, so bringing in a quality veteran could be tricky.

The draft would also be at Green Bay’s disposal but expecting a rookie to come in and perform better than Myers in an offense as complicated as the one concocted by Rodgers and Matt LaFleur would seem unreasonable.

On the other hand, if Jordan Love finally gets his chance, there would be no logic to bringing in a veteran. It would be beneficial to see how Myers fares in an offense which would almost certainly be simpler with LaFleur being the only chef in the kitchen.

Dipping back into the draft would make more sense in this scenario, and increased competition could do Myers some good.

He is listed on Green Bay’s roster as a center/guard, so moving Myers to guard could be a real possibility if Gutekunst finds a center he loves in this year’s draft.

However, it would be more consistent with how the Packers operate if they were to wait one more year to judge Myers’ progress before looking to potentially replace him.

It is important to remember Myers missed a significant chunk of his rookie season through injury, so his up and down displays in 2022 should not have been a total surprise.

While he has been inconsistent during his NFL career so far, that does not mean this is the player Myers will always be. Logic would suggest he’s likely to be a better center in 2023, and the discussion around him could be completely different in a year’s time.

It's painful every time Myers comes up, because I was Humphrey's biggest pre-draft cheerleader, but I also agree that Myers might improve and be a decent player.

MIGHT.

I still tend to think Tom should be moved to center and Myers to guard; I think both would be better there.
However, that requires that other players be adequate/good as the starting and backup tackles. I'd like to keep the Bakhtiari/Nijman pair at LOT and maybe have a Rhyan/Walker/Jones/Tenuta/Draft pick pair at ROT.

Ugh - me too on Humphrey. He was the pre-draft consensus #1 Center, so when we took Myers, I was disappointed. I just hoped and trusted in Gutey, but at this point, it was a reach.

no one was in the interview room with Humphrey. He may not have been thrilled to play in Green Bay, he may be an unrepentant assweed. Drafting for Green Bay has several challenges, some people just won't fit in.

all you know is that he was good at Alabama, and that the "draft experts" had him rated highly. The same draft experts who didn't have Bakhtiari in the first round...

Myers over Humphrey. Ugh, don’t remind us! Another example of Gute’s “I’m the smartest guy in the room” arrogance. Don’t do the expected thing, show your true genius by going with a surprise pick. Show everyone what an out-of-the-box thinker you are. All the GMs will be in awe of your draft acumen. Just like they were of Ted when he passed on TJ Watt to get Kevin King and Vince Biegel. He certainly showed those bozos who the genius was that time!

Oh yeah, I forgot Gute’s genius when he drafted Jordan Love over Tee Higgins. He was thinking, “I know we badly need a receiver but that would be what all these other plodding, mediocre GMs would do. I’m going to draft a QB and sit his ass on the bench for 4 years. I can always get UDFAs and old has-beens to play receiver!”

Pure genius!

Wonder if Higgins would have helped in the home playoff losses to the Bucs and 49ers?

We all know that a 3rd string QB was not needed in the loss to TB, but maybe Love played a key role as a backup QB in the game against the Niners.

You really think Rodgers wouldve thrown to a young Higgins over his besty Davante? Not a chance. Higgins has had some issues with drops thus far. Can only imagine how many times he wouldve been thrown under the bus by 12.

He was probably thinking: "Rodgers isnt taking us anywhere so we might as well draft his replacement." And he was right. Tee Higgins wasnt putting the 2020 or 2021 teams over the top. No receiver would have. Wanna know why? Cuz they still wouldve had the same emotionally immature choke artist under center. When Jordan Love is leading this team into the future, nobodys gonna give a shit about Tee Higgins.

It is always easier to criticize what someone has done in retrospect. Drafting is a hard job. If you mention the busts, be sure you mention all the hits, like Alexander, Gary, Jenkins, Dillon, Watson, Walker (from the looks of things), Tom, Doubs, Enagbare, and Toure.

I think choosing Humphrey over Myer’s was obvious; Gutey didn’t need to overthink that one. The rest of the time, though, I have respected his picks.

Also, the UDFAs are a good point. Gutey has been very good in scouting UDFAs, like Caleb Jones, Tyler Goodson, Jack Coco, and Yosh Nijman

What if Love turns out to be a great QB for many years? What will his decision be then?

It was a little difficult for me watching Juan Thornhill, my #1 safety prospect that year, coming down and making some really nice open field tackles. I mean, safeties who can tackle are not needed in GB. I also thought my #2 safety prospect, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, played well, too. I gather I would have over drafted Gardner-Johnson as he has been pretty meh so far overall.

With the topic being about whether to try to replace Josh Myers, I suppose re-litigating whether he should have been drafted is tangential at best. I guess I have to wait for an article about Gutekunst, but that won't be as much fun because overall I am reasonably satisfied with Gute.

Its easy for fans to criticize after the fact when its not our livelihoods on the line. Yeah Creed Humphrey is good but people act like he wouldve been the savior for this team. Center is far down the list of this team's problems. I posit that this team would have won the exact same amount of games with Humphrey the last 2 years instead of Myers. People really need to let it go.

I too knew Humphrey was the better Center.
But the OSU connection; was Gute's No Brainer.
If they move Myers, he is a bust.
It's just that simple. Don't move him.
Unless it's off the team.
We need a center that uses his head.
Hopefully the light goes on.

You can't make this stuff up, or can you? (not asking you Stock, you made a valid point)...I am handing it off to the universe and waiting for a reply.

To be ultimately successful, the team and management need to get on the same page, hopefully reading the same book.

Try - Jones Ot Georgia and Washington TE Georgia.

Both are considered great blockers.
And both come from a championship team.

No high pick for a TE that blocks. There are six of them rds 3-6. I like Broderick Jones if he is still on the board. He is plug and play RT, or fill in Bhak's spot if he is moved. He has the best feet and movement skills with a strong punch. LaFleur's offense is stock car derby on wide zones, but has no pile drivers for a Power Gap scheme. These dudes cannot get the 3rd and one, 4th and Inches. etc. I would move into round two with as many picks as can be mustered and get the TE, WR #2, or a guy like Schmitz to take control of the middle. Move Myers to guard.

The background does make it very difficult to read the text. Also, Myers could also slide over to guard, if necessary. After all, if you make a mistake, best not to compound it. Just admit it, try to fix it, and move on. At least it's not as bad as the Cardinals spending two #1 overall picks on QB's, two years in a row. And still not knowing if they have a viable QB, or a short, head case QB who runs too much, which will lead to him being hurt sooner than later.

Most of the scouts pre-draft felt he was too tall for the position in the NFL. It's far too early to give up on him but I would say a decision needs to be made after 2023.

One draft pick CAN make all the difference but the really good personnel people seem to know how it's done.

Repeating myself here but open competition between Myers and Tom at C while also giving Myers some practice snaps at RG. If Tom is clearly beating Myers out early in camp then give him more snaps at RG and let him compete with Runyan there.

Agree. Tom was regarded as highly intelligent pre draft. That’s a huge plus at Center and the exact position many had him pegged for. A little more strength and weight and he’d be perfect there with his body type. I’d rather see the Packers either develop Rasheed, Caleb, or find one in the draft more typical of a Tackle’s length. Not saying Tom can’t play Tackle, but the Packers really seem to fight against putting linemen in their best position.

Tom would have to prove he can handle the Bull Rush, 1:1. At OT he is best as a backup guy. You have to play blue chips at the OT spots. Guys who do not need help from a TE or RB to deliver in pass pro. Draft the OT in rd one or two. No more projects letting the right flank collapse into the QBs lap, especially during a Playoff game.

Correct on all points. Thats why I said Tom needs to gain strength and weight. 10 lbs at least. And he would have to prove himself against the bull rush. Another possibility is Tom ends up being the best backup lineman at all positions. He’s proven he can play at all of them. Nothing wrong with having a really good swing lineman. He will end up playing at some point. Injuries happen. Yes, I’d rather see the Packers grab a true blue chip LT/RT in the draft. They can’t keep Bahk much longer. Average can win you games, but playoffs and the SB are another matter.

His versatility and skillset have to be utilized. He's a Football Player. Athletic and the key ingredient for a Professional football player, Intelligent. I like Myer's movement skill on the zone plays, but he's getting slammed inside. His knees may be getting leveraged against power DTs.

In terms of reading the article with black on dark green, I highlighted the text such as you would to copy the text. You get black on a lighter color.

Clearly there is a concern with Myers play in 2022. A question is whether they create a situation where there is competition or direct replacement for the position. It could be a free agent, a trade, a draft pick or a player on the roster.

A veteran free agent would make a lot of sense if GB was one player away from a solid lineup on offense. But I see a number of positions to fill. A veteran free agent would also make a lot of sense if GB goes with Love at QB. Pairing Love with a rookie center could make the blocking calls a serious issue. Are there any URFA veteran centers available?

The same thoughts apply to a trade, with the added question of what player or draft pick are you willing to give up in the trade. Perhaps a third given the low success rate with 3rd round picks.

I can see an interior lineman pick in the 3rd or 4th round. Somebody who can compete at C or RG.

In terms of players on the roster, it becomes a process similar to moving pieces on a game board. Is Nijman GB's starting RT? Or is Tom? If Nijman or a drafted player is your starter at RT, Tom could be available to start at C. That is even if Tom is viewed as an eventual starter at LT. Giving him more game experience can only help in the long term.

Personally, I'd rather select a plug and play OT in the 1st or 2nd round than a C in the 3rd round since it fills two positions: RT and C. Of course drafting an OT in the 1st or 2nd round needs to be weighed against drafting edge, safety, TE and WR. It would be great to have four or five picks in the top 50 picks.

It looks me like author wants to make it harder to read to more senior population on purpose!?

With roster building in mind, I would have to give Meyers all of his third year to grow into the guy I thought I drafted.

The GBP just have too many other needs to tinker with the center position right now. I like Tom as the center IF Nijman learns from his mistakes from his extended playing time this past season, he needs to be more consistent, details matter.

Does Bakh get moved with AR? That is a very real possibility. I like DB to be his full self this coming season and I would like to see him retained, but cap moves will HAVE to be made. The DB domino will set off a chain reaction if it falls off the roster. Meyers will absolutely be the center next season if DB departs, to move him just makes for way too many moving parts.

Meyers chose to don knee braces after his rookie year injury. In his recovery it might have made some comfort sense to do so, however when he reviews his season play with his position coaches I think he should consider getting rid of the braces for two reasons.
1 - his knee is structurally sound and he doesn't need them, they slow him a split second and that is the difference between players in the NFL.
2 - mentally he will stop thinking about his knee and just play his position more instinctively without the physical reminder that he has concerns.

Meyers can fill the center position for the GBP, I hope he grows into the guy we all want and that in turn will allow GBP resources to be used elsewhere there seems to be greater needs, such as WR, TE, OLB, S, DL..... as well as allowing for continuity along the LOS which is a very good thing so long as performance is acceptable.

Myers is frustrating. However, other than Tom, who brought his technique with him, there were so many coaching questions on the line and have been since before our last championship game that I am somewhat less certain of the reasons for it and his future prospects.

Not knowing if Rhyan remains a factor, or whether Bakh will be here and what that means for Tom, I’d expect additions aimed at the G/C positions. I am not sure what to expect of the coaching.

Either Myers gets better on is own, or he gets some competition internally or via the draft to make him better.

I just don't see any other option at this point. Either he improves, or he needs to step aside. Just sucks we spent a 2nd rd pick on him with Creed Humphrey sitting there (who we can watch play in today's Super Bowl).

Myers was recovering from a very bad leg injury last year.

The draft scout profiles on Myers all thought he was a pretty good OL. Obviouslyk the Packers had a reason for taking him ahead of Humphrey. One pretty good analysis was that Myers was better suited for the outside zone runs than Humphrey, and better at getting to the second level. I don't know, I'm not a scout. I'm just saying that there were people in the scouting business, and in the Packer personnel department, who thought that Myers was a pretty good player.

On a line of 5 guys, one person is always going to be the weak point, and if Myers is the weakest point on the line this year, we'll have a pretty good offensive line.

Personally, I'd start Jenkins at Center, because a good center makes both guards better. I'd hold off on making Tom a starter until somebody else got hurt, because he's very versatile and can play all the positions on the offensive line. At this moment in time, if we bring back Bakhtiari and Nijman, we'll have six quality starters. If even one guy from Walker-Jones-Rhyan improves, we'll have seven decent offensive linemen. We could draft a guy on Day Two, and then we might have 8 decent offensive linemen. That might be enough to get us through the season without having to start people like Newman and Hanson.

I thought Myers looked pretty good during his rookie season before he got hurt. I think 2022 was a perfect storm for the OL from really poor choices of whom to play to so many shuffles due to Bak's availability and injuries. On top of that both Jenkins and Bak were working back to consistent game shape and really poor OL personnel decisions made it harder on all of the OL (how many times have we had a MLF line rearrangement not work - Yosh clearly wasn't ready to return against the Lions in the last game, but once again MLF put a lineman in a place where they would fail). I agree with others that 2023 should be a true evaluation of where Myers fits into the line. Also, there seemed to be a large jump in the number of shotgun snaps last year and that may have had a small impact on his play (more than if all the other issues weren't also happening). Not only was Dillon impacted by that choice, but maybe some of Myers performance. If Rodgers is finally retired by the Packers I think Love would make at least 2 players better from day 1.

You want to be angry at Gute for something that matters he and murphy hired Lafluer which is fine because i feel he is a good head coach , but giving Lafluer the power to hire his own assistants has shut this super bowl window faster than a progressive and conservative could disagree with one another .

No free agents at OC. GB has bigger holes.

Myers is good enough to win with. Problem is Runyan had a solid year in 2021 and also was only good enough to win with in 2022. And my view is that Nijman is only good enough to win with.

If there is a good-looking center/guard prospect at 78, or on day three, Gute should consider taking such a player. Again, GB has enough holes that even if there is a nice OC/OG prospect at 78 there might be a TE, Safety, nickel back, DT, etc. I'd prefer.
