Thanks, Al. I always appreciate how fast CHTV gets this information out. Outside of the QB pickup this roster looks pretty much as expected (and really, really, good!).

They have 3 guys they like better. Love AJ, but he was never the true power back his quads would suggest. He's not elusive. He was a good player and good guy for 3 years.

" It's likely several teams will take a look at him" . Oops, my bad. Fake news. I spoke without the facts. They put AJ on IR - out for the year.

The IR was unexpected but I thought he was on his way out and needed to show something to keep his spot. He hasn't been effective in a long time. Great guy and loves the fans but he runs like he is in mud.

He said "pretty much" as expected. Dillon was hurt, so there was always a chance he'd go on IR though I thought it would have been the short term IR. So there must be something to that injury.

He's apparently been having stingers for over a year now. If he has a grade 3 stinger going on, that's serious. Don't mess with the nerves in the neck.

My wish came true. Newman is gone. Let's hope Love stays healthy and Telfort and Dillard never suit up for a game.

Joseph claimed the kicking duties and he retained talent for the edge rush with a spark plug guy like Mosby and Cox is learning the game. Newman is a guy who ran out of chances.

I'll take it. I figured we'd massage the IR and end up with those three RBs. I thought Kaelen King would make it, and that Oladapo would go PS but maybe that'll work the other way around. We did keep 10 OL, as prophesied by dobber. I'd trade Telfort and Dillard for one guy who could play. Please tell me at least ONE of the people getting cut is better than them. And Newman got cut. Praise Jesus.

This is a good enough roster to be competitive, and it'll need to be, because the first opponent is one of the better teams in the NFC and will probably be one of the last 4 after the first weekend of the playoffs. An excellent test, right out of the box.

Our first offense was on the field for 3 plays, two that gained little and then the TD bomb. Any DC who has the Packers to deal with is going to have to stop us from just throwing over his head, because we can do it this year. We have the receivers, the QB, and the Oline. The only way to slow this bunch down would be to encourage them to run the ball.

I think they'll sign another guy to replace Dillard. Depending on what's available out there. He might be the biggest surprise. But most likely a placeholder.

There is a guy I'd like us to get. Carman Jackson, former #42. He's been unappreciated, so in the first preseason game he drew three holding penalties and a false start. IOW, "get me out of here". So they cut him.

I can't believe he's not better than some of the guys we have.

I liked Oladapo's play during pre-season and watching his college film. Not predicting, but It would be something if he became the best safety of the 3 draft picks.

He's a SS who can stack when necessary. Have to have faster bodies for the new kick off rules. He was a solid draft selection.

" I'd trade Telfort and Dillard for one guy who could play."

Throwing cheap bodies at a problem and hoping something sticks. Add Glover to this list.

"Our first offense was on the field for 3 plays,"

It sounds like the coaching staff views the joint practices as surrogates for preseason game play, but more controlled. That said, the starters apparently got handled by Denver in their joint practices...

They can all bring it off the edge. You need to keep the wheel rolling and constantly challenge the OTs with speed and stunts. Hafley wants the opposing QBs feeling heat. With most bodies in place it is now a veteran defense.
I liked all his cuts.

Interesting that Lloyd made the 53 straight up. Must not be too serious of an injury since they had that 4-week IR slot open and let is languish. Sad to hear about Dillon. He is a good dude and a great Packer. Bet a couple of the released RB's land on the PS. Not surprised about Anderson. Seems more of a head problem than a leg problem for him. Missing that chip shot against the Ravens was a close to a nail-in-a-coffin as we are likely to see. Agree with others than Joseph better not relax too much - his seat is a hot one made of cardboard right now.

For me surprises are:
1. Joseph instead of Carlson.
2. No King at CB.
3. Only 3 TEs (no Davies).
4. No Welch. Yes I know that he was a fifth wheel of the cart, but solid ST player who stood out in preseason games must had been tempting. I think if he played different position he'd made it to 53.

I don't know if I should put Newman as 45. but I consider it a sign we are gettng better... Or maybe different. I hope one of our 6-10 guys will develop as Tom and Walker did. We need it.

The story of Grant DuBose shows me again how much is all the off- and preseason talk worth. Nothing. Every year the same crap. Training camp darling, making highlight plays every day, best shape of his life, finally healthy, coaches can't believe their eyes etc. etc. and can't even make 53. I have nothing against him. It's aimed at talking heads and my stupid self, so hungry of football in spring and summer that I try to catch any info, any footage like oxygene.

There was nothing wrong with the DuBose story. He really did play great at the beginning of training camp. Then he kind of faded and Malik Heath played great and beat him out. This sort of thing happens all the time. It doesn't mean people were wrong to praise DuBose when he was playing well.

Whew, Ballentine made it...

Give Gute credit for acknowledging a mistake and cutting the cord with Carlson. End of the line with Newman also (finally). Finances aside, neither one deserved to make the team.

A little disappointed Welch didn't make it (what more could he do?), but with a crowded LB room it would have been tough.

The big news for me is still the Willis trade. As excited as I am about his potential, he still has a lot of coaching to absorb--and he's now our primary backup! So he'd better be getting to work...I always wonder what a player's initial reaction is after being traded to Green Bay; is it something like "OMG, Lord help me!" and once it sinks in, "Hey, this could be really good for my career!"? Wasn't it something like that with Charles Woodson when he signed with us?

Gutey is not afraid to make difficult decisions, even unpopular decisions.

Willis was very interesting decision. He's a talented guy...about the same age as Love. Expect they will hit it off.

I believe Willis's reaction was "YES! Going to QB HOF University!"

If what Demovsky said regarding the swing Tackle is accurate - 'the “feeling internally” is that Green Bay’s first tackle off of the bench for the regular season isn’t on the team’s current roster' , Then one of Dillard, Telfort, or Glover may not end up being on the final 53 roster.

Thanks for update, Al.
I will trust the Packers Brain Trust with these selections. Honestly, I really don't know these players, and I'm even having problems understanding the modern game of football (I still don't know what a catch is). Though I am disappointed Jonathon Owens was traded and is not on this team. His sideline contribution (Simone Biles) far outweighs his onfield work. I dig seeing Simone sporting the Green and Gold.

That was the rumor. It quickly spread Bo was traded for a 7th. Now it seems the Chargers and Packers were discussing a 7th rounder deal that has not happened.

Maybe Chargers backed off. Maybe the deal still goes through. Deal can't happen if Bo is cut.

Either way, it seems Gutey (and the Chargers) valued Melton over DuBose, Toure.

I hope that this is not true. Melton is the speedster we need especially if Christian Watson hurts his hammy again.

I can see that they may want another 7th rounder though so they can trade it for an OL or Kicker.

I'd rather have Melton - a guy you know and you know can play, and who we may need for speed vs. an unknown 7th pick next year. Going back to 2018, we have success with Valentine and Walker. The 7th rounders who have not made the initial team, played only a year or have since been waived are: Pratt, King, Nichols, Johnson, DuBose, Carpenter, Ford, Toure, Hill, Garvin, Scott, Summers, Looney, Bradley and Donnerson. 12% successful contribution rate of all 7th round picks in the last 7 drafts.

I do appreciate putting players on your 53 who are ST leaders and performers and Anderson is just better at STs vs AJ Jr. STs plays many minutes and in some games...track meets or a punting duel...STs can tell the tale.

Ah the season is nigh. To my knowledge, LB Eric Wilson and K Greg Joseph are the lone DOGS left on the roster in their enemy year of the DRAGON. Would love to see Welch replace Wilson and a vet kicker to replace Joseph; #noconfidence vote for both in '24!

11 Life paths Akers, Dobbins, Gibson were the RBs I was hoping Gute was considering in the draft. Swift has shown flashes when healthy, but being a 7 life path, injury is no stranger. This is much more relevant to the RB position given the constant wear and tear. So rule of thumb: avoid 7 LP path RBs. We're all die hards here...think of a few RBs that are often injured...
MOSTERT, RAHEEM
GURLEY, TODD
FOURNETTE, LEONARD
CONNER, JAMES
MICHEL, SONY
YELDON, TJ
DAVIS, MIKE
AJAYI, JAY
MATTISON, ALEXANDER-->all 7 life paths<--you'll probably see these 7 LPs from the 2020 class repeat offenders in the future...
EDWARDS-HELAIRE, CLYDE
SWIFT, D'ANDRE
EVANS, DARRYTON
DILLON, A.J. (yes unfortunately)
DOWDLE, RICO

Re: Aaron Jones, if he is to be retained, I would not commit beyond the 2023 season as 2024 is year of the DRAGON, his enemy sign. Being a DOG, oppositional energy will manifest and likely wreck his 2024 in some form or another.>>

Biggest surprises, ranked:

1. A.J. Dillon to IR, season over. We had no way of knowing how serious his injury was. Wiith Marshawn Lloyd injured, I figured Dillon would make the team and be the #2 RB as soon as he got healthy.
2. Anthony Johnson Jr. cut. I don't know of anyone who predicted he would get cut. He's not a terrible player.
3. Marshawn Lloyd on the initial roster. I had heard he was going to be placed on IR, designated to return. I wonder if he may still end up on the injured list to start the season when the dust clears.
4. Greg Joseph still on the roster. We'll see if he sticks. My guess is no. Still a mild surprise that he's made it this far.
5. Brenton Cox and Arron Mosby both on the roster. I thought it would be one or the other.

I believe some of the biggest takeaways are seeing that both Brenton Cox Jr. and Aaron Mosby made the final 53 at DE. I was hoping we would draft both players, and I think we will see them develop further this season into high quality defenders. Add in the decisive slough offs of marginal players at best in Newman & Carlson, and this year's 53 seems pretty bangin'!
