Gut Reactions: Week 5 vs St. Louis Rams

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers' win over the Rams.

  • I know fans will be frustrated after this game, and I certainly get the many reasons for that. But this was a tough-fought win against a dangerous Rams team. A win is a win in the NFL, none of them are easy to come by. 5-0 baby.
  • Loved the early pressure on Nick Foles. The defense completely owned St. Louis up front early. The Rams did a great job countering that pressure by using the aggressiveness against them. Gurley certainly got his as the game went on.
  • A day to forget from Richard Rodgers.
  • As for the other Rodgers, St. Louis followed the same script on defense that Buffalo did last year and the 49ers did last week. A really healthy dose of 2 Man coverage with the defensive backs pressing hard at the line. If the Packers can't run teams out of that look, they can expect to see it a bunch more.
  • Speaking of the Rams defense, they absolutely squatted on the short stuff. The two deep safeties in 2 Man tends to take away deep shots, so you have to work underneath.
  • I'm actually glad Rodgers' INT-less streak is broken. I cringed every time they talked about it or showed it on a graphic.
  • By the way, I totally blame whoever asked Rodgers if he could go a whole season without throwing an interception at his locker this week.
  • No I don't.
  • Ok, a little bit I do.
  • No, no, no.
  • Yes.
  • Was really impressed by Walker at guard. He got a surprise early when Donald went by him with his lightning quickness, but as soon as he got his bearings, he played very well in pass pro. Need to go back and watch again to see how he did in the run game.
  • I really think they just need to sit Lacy until he's 100%, which he clearly isn't. This time-share isn't helping anyone.
  • Really hope Lang and Hayward are alright.
  • How about Rollins?
  • Clay Matthews was absolutely outstanding again today.
  • Ha Ha Clinton Dix played a very good game. It's great to see a guy unafraid to stick his nose in there the way he did today.
  • All James Jones is catch touchdowns.
  • Bring on the Chargers.
  • It's official. I love this team.
  • Go Pack.

I'd sit Lang, Adams, Lacy and Burnett next week.

It's a non-conference game before a bye. Let them get 2 weeks rest for the price of one missed game.

Pretty much saw the same thing. Was it real pretty, not so much but I will take it because we are winning at things we did not last year. Mistakes about killed us today, we were just good enough to pull out the win and the D does it again.

I like the Tom Clements era but it's time to adopt pass-to-run when the run isn't working and incorporate Harris in lieu of Lacy's injury.

Hayward plays most of the snaps inside and good things happen. I hope he's alright and he can return to his rightful place in the slot.

Injuries suck.

5-0 is awesome.

Hayward is the one to blame for Rams TD. He did not follow his guy (no 11) across the field. That was why he jump out alone on the other side... Casey is to relax!

I thought it was awfully nice to hear about that streak. I'll miss that talk.

What I'm glad about is that a 3 turnover day from the offense is still a +1 overall and the Packers get a win. They offense has habitually bailed out a shaky defense. It's nice to get things even out some.

Is Clay really better at MLB than he is at OLB? Or is he just more valuable at MLB?

This Defense is really looking like (I won't jinx it...but you all know). The pressures, the sacks, the tackles for loss, the interceptions. I hope they can continue to grow and become more disciplined. This Defense can be better than (that year...I won't mention it).

Bye Week can't come fast enough.

I think its just that he's that much more versatile than MLB
At OLB, all he did was rush, and stop the read.
But at MLB, he can make much more tackles, get da sacks, and drop into coverage. He's much more dynamic in the middle than the outside.
This D is looking like 2010's, and y'all know what happened then.

For the past few years, I felt like like the inexperience of the defensive personnel couldn't play to the level of Capers' genius. Doesn't seem to be the case this year. Faster, hungrier, smarter, more confident. #FireCapers

My opinion has always been that CMIII on the outside would play undisciplined at times. It's how he plays...he goes 1000 mph with his hair on fire and chases the football, but he wasn't all that good at setting the edge and could get run out of plays. When he plays the middle, he's got the whole field in front of him and he's had to learn to be more disciplined. He's playing really good football right now.

I agree. I mean, it might be crazy to compare just 1 full season at MLB to his seasons at OLB, but I'm liking the MLB Clay Matthews more. Maybe I'm a prisoner in the moment. I don't know.

It has never been a question of "is Clay better inside than outside", it's always been a question of "How do we get the 11 most talented football players on the field?"

We are weaker at ILB than OLB. We have more guys at OLB that can play at a high level than ILB, so when Clay is playing OLB, that means we have a weaker player on the field playing ILB and a stronger one riding pine.

the drop off from clay to Neal or Perry or Elliot or Mulumba (at OLB) isn't as steep as the drop off from Clay to Jake Ryan or Joe Thomas (at ILB).

I completely agree but thinks it goes much deeper than just Matthews playing inside or out. Capers has used the entire gameday roster in situations that allow them to succeed. It's been fun to watch because you never know who is going to step up and make a play.

Clay is healthy which is a big part of it. But I do think that rushing from the middle is a shorter path to the QB and he is getting home more often. I mean they lost him in the scheme and he was totally untouched on that one sack and that's not going to happen when he lines up outside.

The Pack's O without Jordy, Adams, and a healthy Lacy (and without Lang and Bulaga coming off his injury) is not clicking at the moment - thank God for James Jones.

But what a defensive performance, have not seen that in years.

Worst part of the game is the injuries to Lang, Raji, Perry, and Hayward. Hope they get healed up.

Nice games from Daniels, Perry, Neal, Guion, Raji prior to his injury, CM3 of course, really the whole front 7. Shields played well (I'd like to see some of those pass break-ups turned into Interceptions - that might put him in the all-pro category). Dix and Banjo played tough. Rollins really flashed but was also a rookie. Randall looks like a good pick. Thomas played the coverage ILB role again and had a big deflection. Look at the depth. It is a credit to TT.

Aaron Donald said Welcome to the NFL to Walker after his first snap. Walker showed that he belongs after that. More depth. Credit to TT.

Rams are similar t o the Chiefs, fast team on both sides of the ball, good pass rush but Foles seems to be under pressure every snap ,I did not like falling for the fake punt that could have made it a game, when all is said and done, 5 and 0. People stayed away from the 9 point spread and they cover and win by 14 , that's a good day! the tailgate parties continue in Green Bay!

- The D is just as exciting to watch as the O.
- Glad the interception streak is over. Now he can just play ball. Take a few more risks.
- I like how aggressive Mike can get on fourth down midfield calls even if we don't get them. That's straight up confidence in the D.
- Shields looks all pro to me. He hasn't always. Except for game one this season......he's earned my trust.
- I've got respect for Fisher. Pack D is getting home on Foles, so he switched it up to fancy running playcalling with backfield trickery. It slowed our pass rush and made play action effective. Good in game adjustments that resulted in their first touchdown drive.
- I'm sorry but that ball moved on the int.
- Mike's use of challenges is the best. Minus the word best.
- James F.N. Jones.........nuff said
- I know people will be upset with that fake punt blown coverage. But that was not blown coverage. That was a brilliant play by the punter.
- Total points from 3 packer turnovers
= 3. Adversity D at its finest.
- Gurley in space is scary
- Looks like ha-ha on the ball machine after practice has paid off this week
- Last thoughts on the day summed up in two words.........pressure and ballhawks

It is not regarding game adjustments, but completelly blown coverage by Casey Hayward who did not follow his guy to the other side of the field!

It is not brilliant play by the punter, as well it is not blown coverage. Packers player who covered STL player, slipped dpwn. That is why the throw was not intercepted!

The punter should have been sacked. He actually did a good job of escaping the pocket and buying time with his feet. Goodson did slip....you are right.....but that punter extended that play to even find the open man. That's pretty impressive when QBs do that.....but a punter?

All streaks come to an end. Fortunately thanks to huge defensive effort it did not cost us a game and we're 5-0. Two picks were the result of Rams sitting on short passing game. I thought 2nd Ram pick hit the ground. Regardless, defense made plays and dominated for most of the game. It seems like every week at least one of our players is getting injured. Hope Lang gets back soon, Hayward also. Bring on the Chargers. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

It was sure ugly for Aaron and this offense, BUT I'LL TAKE THE WIN!

The second biggest thing that stood out to me today was how thorough the passing D played and SHUT DOWN Nick Foles.

The biggest thing? The Packers are suffering quite a great deal in their own passing game as well. These WR's need to get healthy. Hopefully Davante Adams will return and make a big impact. Ty Montgomery needs to continue to get better.

This is still a very potent offense, but injuries and the inconsistencies really make this team struggle to be the offensive juggernaut it was last year. Just still wish Jordy Nelson was healthy, had he been we would have scored 30+ easy. Blow out game.

Yeah, but he can still wish we had better players. Jordy being out has created a notable deficiency in this teams offense and will come back to bite them in the playoffs unless one of the young guys becomes a consistent downfield threat.

The lack of open receiving options is clearly the offenses biggest weakness right now. Unless ARod is just not seeing them.

No one is saying that Jordy isn't a better wide out, but there is only one ball to go around. And the offense as a whole hasn't suffered much. All Jones does is make clutch play after clutch play.

Look at this way: the Chief lost Charles today.

Chief - Charles = royally dekcuf.
Packers - Nelson = just fine actually.

Its not even close to a wash from Jordy to Jones. Its a big step down and the offense is clearly suffering from it! But wishing for Jordy is a waste of time and non productive fantasy. Live in the moment and do your best w/ the hand your dealt instead of looking backwards. Its the only way to be successful.

Totally agree. I don't understand the down-votes, your comment is spot on. Not having Jordy available to stretch the defense has had a huge impact on the Packers offense. They are having to adjust on the fly while having to lean on young players like Ty Montgomery to step up right away. I'm still waiting to see if/when they will use Jeff Janis to run some of those deep patterns that Jordy is known for. He and Jordy have a similar skill-set and Janis certainly has the speed to take the top off a defense.

Thanks.

Janis has similar size and speed, but like Jordy he needs a lot of development coming into the league. Jordy took 3 yrs to turn into a great WR. Janis is a ways from being ready to contribute IMO, which is unfortunate.

I wonder about his hands, route running and he clearly hasn't earned Rodgers trust either. Would be great if he could take that big step during this year, but I don't believe he will. Just not ready for prime time.

It definitely is going to take him time to develop. Coming from a small school, will definitely take him some time to develop.

I understand that Rodgers doesn't trust him. But isn't here ways that they could get him involved in the offense to help earn Rodgers trust? Is there any reason why they can't do something to allow him to run vertical? He has to much speed and to big of a skill set to just sit on the sideline all game. Nothing else it might force defenses to have to keep their safety's back when Janis were to enter.

I'm sure there is a lot of reason not to trust him from practice, but for 2 years now in the preseason games he showed he can play. Perhaps he is a gamer type of player? Plays games better then he practices?

Janis might not be ready to play every down or every series, but I think they might want to find a way to get him playing time sooner then later. They might have to force Rodgers to find ways to trust him.

The WR position has been hit hard with injuries. (Nelson gone for the year, Cobb is playing injured and isn't himself, and Adams has been out pretty much the whole season so far). One more injury to the position and we will be forced to play Janis whether Rodgers likes it or not. I think it would be better to build some sort of rapport with him before he has to.

Janis opportunity on offense is dependent on Adams health, if Adams returns soon Janis will have few opportunities to contribute other than special teams. What is also a huge factor in compensating for the loss of Nelson is the fact that our tight end (Rodgers) cannot pose a threat for more than 5-10 yards down the field which allows defenses to lean towards the WR's. Rodgers even with little separation has been very consistent catching the football (his drop yesterday was his first real drop to date) but his "yak" is almost non existent. It looks like they have little confidence in Backmann, Tretter was the 2nd TE used yesterday and with Qualress on IR the cupboard is bare.

It starts in practice and we don't see that. But its pretty clear Rodgers doesn't trust him enough. Whether that's keeping him off the field on Offense is debatable, but its clear as day. Can't force Rodgers to throw to a WR he doesn't deem trustworthy when they are on the field.

Couple games ago Janis was on the field early and Rodgers went his direction on a deep ball. Seemed Janis was too far outside the hash because Rodgers throw was basically out of bounds. Rodgers isn't going to keep the throw in bounds where an INT will happen. Janis has to run his route to allow for the throw over the outside shoulder but still in bounds. Janis probably allowed the DB to push him too far outside. Beating press coverage is another thing I heard Janis is struggling with.

But look at the bright side, this team hasn't come close to peaking on offense yet and the Packers are 5-0. I thought this would be the game where it started to come together offensively and they'd hang at least 40 on the Rams. Beat San Diego, rest 2 weeks, and go beat Manning and the Broncos.

Second game in a row won by our defense. Amazing... We've all been waiting for our defense to show up since 2010 and now it has finally arrived.
This was an old fashion, slugfest type of football game. Watch NFL films, this game was a throwback to the 1960s No one is going to be calling this Packers team "soft" To be a champion, a team must win this kind of game and we won it!

The only thing that will stop this team are injuries. They are so balanced on both sides of the ball. Yes, Jordy's injury hurts but not every team we face will have STL's defense. Only ARZ's defense is comparable and maybe MIN on a good day.

I know we've become accustomed to several 50 burgers in a season, that's not going to happen this year. The quality of competition is much better. The AFC South isn't on our schedule. Nor are the Saints and Bucs.

So we're left with the likes SEA, DEN, KC, CAR, ARZ, STL, and DAL. Each one is a tough opponent. So far we're handling them...by double digits no less.

This is an impressive body of work. Kudos to TT and MM. Here's to hoping the injury bug doesn't derail our trip to Santa Clara.

I think this is an important point. This schedule is keeping us tough. Playoff ready tough. Especially all of these stout defenses we have to play. It seems like every week we have to play "the best pass rush in the league". Keep hearing it over and over again......these guys can get to the quarterback. Formula to beat Rodgers...... In spite of all this...we are winning. Because they have to solve our defense now too. Glad we're not playing all pansy teams.

Honestly, when I looked at the season's schedule, I was like "Holy F**k, we have amazing defenses this year. And the Bears."
I was worried, but now, I'm insanely amazed by how well we are playing. We've outscored opponents by an average of almost 10 points per game AGAINST SOME OF THE BEST DEFENSES. That's unreal.

Ty's developing, Adams is coming back, O-Line starting to mesh(kinda).

I was against the Ty pick, but based on how he's playing, I take it all back. He's got the quick burst that Nelson has too, so with time, he could soften the blow of Nelson's injury.

Hopefully the injuries to Lang, Raji and Perry are not going to result in lost time. Need Adams and Burnett back too. Having Bulaga back this week was big. There is a lot of depth on this team, but these injuries are mounting.

Why would McCarthy decide to take that last field goal on 4th and 1. Too much bad can happen on a field goal try and they would still be up two scores if they can't convert on 4th and 1. It gained them next to nothing and added a lot more risk. Dumb move.

So on a day when A. Rodgers turned it over 3 times, when R. Rodgers dropped a sure TD pass and nullified a field goal, when the leading rusher was the quarterback, when they failed on a 4th down to kill another drive - the team wins by 14 points.

The D has just been outstanding. 3 more sacks and just pounded on Foles so that he didn't pass the 100 yard mark until late in the 4th. 4 picks, one for a score and two others in the red zone.

Amazing to see that 5 games into the season the unit playing best for the Packers is their defensive line.

I expected a tough game, but I did not expect the offense to look like that. I do tend to forget who we're missing at times on Offense though.

We need games like this. It just seems like we performed worst (Offensively) in the Bills game last season , but was still able to pull off the win. That's a great building block.

'I do tend to forget who we're missing at times on Offense though.'

This is something many of us are forgetting. Not even including Nelson, we are playing without our #2 WR, #2 TE, our #1 WR has been playing injured, as has our #1 RB, and in yesterdays game we just got back our RT, and then we lose our RG.

Its understandable why our offense has struggled a bit lately. Once we get all the younger players up to speed our offense will improve dramatically.
Montgomery is on his way.

While Adams is out, I really think now is the time to get Janis/Abbrederis some playing time to try and develop some sort of rapport with Rodgers.

If another WR goes down, they are going to be forced to play them. I would rather Rodgers build some sort of confidence with them before he would have to try to later on.

A win is a win is a WIN! I'll take it and I'm glad the streak is over, too. Damn sick & tired of hearing about it and yelled at whatever talking head was talking to stfu. btw...that second int? NOT. Rams player never had possession until the ground helped him haul it in.
The officiating continues to be horrendous, imo. The call on that int is evidence as well as the numerous times I saw pass interference that was egregious in nature.
Speaking of which...is the rule that a facemask is not a facemask unless the offender actually yanks the face guard, fingers fully entwined? Because on the stiff arm delivered by one Rams receiver on (was it Randall?), I swear a facemask occurred.
Oh well...water under the bridge. 5-0 BAY-BEEE!!!
Off to light a few candles for our injured guys, and to help ward off future boo-boos.

2 INT's against Manning today. Love seeing the old man make plays. Hope he can get another INT for a TD. One more to tie the other Woodson all time.

I never thought I would see another CB as good as Adderly against the pass/ run plus as dangerous as a returner (like a 5 tool MLB player - extremely rare) but Woodson qualifies. Only question is does he go in the HOF as a Raider or Packer ? Either way, Thompson's return on investment was significant.

I can't bring myself to say Aaron Rodgers was bad today, but what do you call it when a QB throws as many picks as TD's, has two or three more passes that defenders got hands on and tipped into the air, and fumbles the ball? That's not a good game or even a pedestrian one. It's... Not good.

I would really like to see a WR targeted who isn't Mongomery, Jones, or Cobb when things aren't going well. Just give it a try. As Jones apparently said to Rodgers once, the WRs have gifts and talents to play the game too, you have to give them opportunities.

I agree with the sentiment to shelf Lacy- or, at least, keep his snaps below ten a game for a while. I want him injury free and on fresh legs come about week 10-12. We know Starks is capable and why not get Harris some experience? The good news is, this is likely the best front seven we're going to see all season. Hopefully, downhill running from here on out.

What I love is this is the second week in a row the Defense has carried the offense- this easily could have been a 17-all game at the 2 minute warning had Rollins not had the pick-6 and Thomas/Clinton-Dix not stopped the Rams' drive with the tipped pass/end zone pick.

5-0. Let's hope Lang is okay.

Well said, Oppy. I agree on all counts. I don't want to put words in your mouth, but I have written that Rodgers has a touch of the diva in him about this trust thing. He has ignored open receivers (R. Rodgers mostly but janis too) at times. There is some stubbornness in the coaching staff too about playing time. These WRs aren't getting open. I've written that Adams does everything well except get open - we better hope that he has taken a jump in that regard when he returns.

"a WR targeted who isn't Mongomery, Jones, or Cobb"

Umm, those are pretty much the WR that they have on the field right now. I mean, what do you expect to see, a 4 WR set?

"what do you call it when a QB throws as many picks as TD's, has two or three more passes that defenders got hands on and tipped into the air, and fumbles the ball?"

What do you call it when your QB leads the team in rushing yards, and the running backs collectively can't get to 50 yards? Sounds like there was no credible running threat, and the QB was scrambling his a$$ off to me.

What do you say when the QB is used to stepping up in the pocket because his protection on the outside is a little shaky, and then one of the best DLs in football starts getting pressure up the middle and batted a ball on the outside that happened to get intercepted? Sounds like you played one of the best defensive lines in football, the QB was put in a lot of tough situations, but somehow managed to only be sacked twice and hit three more times. That QB sounds like a magician to me.

And what do you think when the D sat on the short routes and picked up an INT, but the QB makes them pay with two TDs of 30+ yards (and maybe there should have been a third) when there is no WR on the team who is a legitimate deep threat? Sounds like you played a smart defense that picked its poison, but the QB was really able to make them pay anyway.

But yeah, if you want to look at that game and go, "hmm, 2 TDs 2 INTs = a Jay Cutler game" I guess you can do that if you want.

So, we're at the point now where you become enemy #1 if you dare criticize Aaron Rodgers?

I love the guy. I'll tell you he's the best QB in the league, and quickly carving out a niche for himself in the GOAT conversation.

But he IS human, he DOES have poor games, and he ISN'T above criticism.

...And, YEAH, I WOULD like to see 4 wr sets, by the way. With Cobb or Montgomery on the field, they can run no huddle and pop one or the other (or both) in the backfield if they want to run. Since when did 4 WR sets become a Packers Taboo? Heck, slap big 5 out again. Even W/O Jordy or Adams. I'd welcome it.

They don't have 4 WR they can reasonably assume can do the job or run the correct route. Even if you use a TE as a WR, its a TE that scares NO one and can't get any separation or YAC.

No point in going 4 WR if you don't have 4 good WR. Would rather keep Lacy or Starks in the game instead.

Love, love, love this team. We finally have a scary defense.
Yes our offense isn't firing on all cylinders but, with Rodgers and McCarthy, they will get it rolling. Also Lacy is a RB that is most effective at the end of the season. Towards the end of the year expect the running game to improve greatly.

One thing I noticed was that after Raji went out that is when Gurley seemed to get his big yardage plays. Hopefully Raji is going to be ok to go.

The thing that impresses me the most is how our Rookies really played a huge part in today's win. Montgomery scored early and was the go to guy on a few more plays. Rollins showed why they drafted him in the 2nd round even after they already took Randall in the first.

I think Gurley's big play(s) came while the Packers were in 2 down linemen fronts, in which case, Raji doesn't play those sets usually anyways.

It should be mentioned that Raji exited the game two entire defensive series before the announcers on CBS even noticed.

I'm not disappointed with their performance today for the same reasons mentioned in the article. The Rams are a quality opponent (they just beat a very good Cardinals team in Arizona last week). And I also was relieved to see the INT streak come to an end. It started to become an unnecessary distraction.

Kind of amazing - 5 weeks in - and the defense is looking top notch and winning games for us, ST are solid and the offense is sputtering. Rams gave us 3 EZ TDs yesterday and that's all we got all day. Rams offense OTOH had excellent chance to put 26 points on the board in the final Q and got none. Best defensive performance in a long long time. The DL is playing strong. McGinn traces it back to getting AJ Hawk out of the middle. He says it frees up the DL to play in a more attacking fashion. Says it was almost criminal to have Hawk on the field last 3 years. Why did we do it? Just to justify TT's highest draft pick ever? Or is TT that blind? Should have never gotten that final mega-contract. Replacing Hawk with Matthews is like replacing a Fiat with a Bentley.

Personally I agree with Naglers 2nd to last sentence, "It's official, I love this team". The Packers are 5-0 with Burnett out 4 games, Guion 3 games, Adams basically 4 games, Bulaga 3 games, Cobb and Lacy banged up and Barrington on IR. I know there's others but you get the idea, the best is yet to come! This Bye Week can't get here fast enough.

Ted T is looking like a freaking genius for taking Randell and Rollins. Randell has been excellent all year and Rollins gave us a preview of things hopefully to come. Thank God they made the defensive calls easier because the breakdowns have been few and far between.

I know Janis didn't get the ball down, but he did everything possible to keep his body from the endzone. No excuses for not getting it done, but effort was certinaly there.
I expect Janis to see some passes on the fly routes until Adams makes a full recovery. Anything to get those CBs from squatting on the short passes.

If you call over-running the play great effort, that's fine. Personally I find it to be a stupid mistake. Should never have been in position that he ran into the end zone and when he did he compounded the error by not establishing both feet in the field of play. That's 2 mental mistakes on one play, either of which could have prevented the touchback. If he wants on the field on offense, these are exactly the kind of mistakes he CAN'T make.

I expect he just pushed himself further from seeing the field on offense and being able to run those fly routes you hope to see.

And how about that crucial catch Montgomery made while being held on that slant route?

I'm sure it didn't make up for that potential TD drop against the 49ers, but it had to raise Rodgers' confidence in him.
