Gut Reactions: Week 15 vs Oakland

Aaron's gut reactions from the Packers' win over the Raiders.

  • Survive and advance.
  • The Packers exhibited all the energy and want-to of a team that knew it had locked up a playoff birth just after kickoff.
  • This offense is hard to watch.
  • Outside of the gift pick six, so was Damarious Randall.
  • From Davante Adams being totally soft at the catch point to Jeff Janis letting a sure TD on the slant go through his hands to James Jones pushing off to get open, it's a miracle Rodgers throws to anyone other than Randall Cobb.
  • What did Eddie Lacy do this time to be a complete afterthought?
  • And to those who say "He didn't run hard in the first half" - that is some serious bullshit.
  • Quinten Rollins is the king of throwing himself at the ball carrier's feet.
  • Tough day at the office for Jake Ryan. Pretty ugly all around.
  • Bakhitiari had another good game. Hope his injury isn't too serious.
  • Julius Peppers made another play. A few, actually.
  • The way McCarthy overthinks the redzone playcalling is truly mind boggling.
  • Abbrederis needs to start taking more and more of Adams' snaps. I know he's mainly been used in the slot, but he could do more.
  • Mike Pennel quietly had another nice game, when he was used.
  • Daniels almost got home a few times.
  • That interceptuon by Rodgers summed up the day. Just brain dead nonsense.
  • Clay Matthews was invisible all game. His next spin move that works will be the first.
  • Seriously, the Packers were lucky to escape this game with a victory.
  • Bring on the Cardinals! (gulp.)
  • Go Pack.
  • Merry Christmas.

If I see Adams get one more target I'm gonna kill myself. He is terrible. Can't play with him. Can't coach with him. Can't do it. Ugh....

Ronde barber recovered nicely after butchering some names. Spot on with call that raiders had no solution for our 2 deep safety looks.

We are brutal, I dread playoffs.

WHY would you DREAD the playoffs??? Because GB likely isn't winning it all? Because (like 11/12 other playoff teams) they'll probably end the season with a loss??? They're still a good team! Still going to most likely win the division! Still have a puncher's chance in AZ and CAR! In a one and done scenario, anything can and does happen!! The best team in the NFL doesn't always win it all.

I assume I am correct in stating that according to you, Cowpie, Marco, JPK etc... we're either the favorite, or brutal. No in between. AMIRITE? Good Lord that is baffling.

Some Packers fans are so effin spoiled it makes me sick.

-Nice to see a team besides the Packers suffers against the two high safety look.
-That being said I'm surprised we ran that.
-Now we know that the play caller has no effect on the outcome of the game. These guys still can't throw, can't catch, and can't run unless there are less than 15 minutes to play
-Defense has looked good this year. Sure, Clay has been quiet but the D looks good.

Clay is the one who blew up the pocket on the Peppers half sack. He doesn't always get credit for the pressures he has. I've also never seen any other player get held so much and it's almost never called.

This game just could not end fast enough. Both literally and figuratively. Games started later and ended sooner than this one. What an anemic offensive showing. If it weren't for two gifted INT's in the first half, this would be a Loss. Only one drive in the 2nd half actually had some up tempo rhythm.

Why does Davante Adams always look for a flag after a drop? Just catch the damn ball!

Glad we're in the playoffs, but 2 weeks to get it figured out.

If they don't get it together, they sure will be 1 and done. Sorry to say. Some want to call me negative here. Hey guys, if you know football, you know:
A playoff contender can run it up the gut on 3rd and short, and get the first down or touchdown. The Packers can't.
A playoff contender can get a pass completed downfield (10+ yards) at least 50% of the time. The Packers can't.
A playoff contender doesn't rely on defensive penalties to sustain drives, The Packers do!
A playoff contender with first and goal at the 2 will get the touchdown 8 of 10 times. The Pack has missed several such opportunities.
A playoff contender plays consistently, win or lose, and has certain strengths that it can rely on. What can the Packers rely on? Against Dallas 'they were back'! This week, looked like the Detroit game and if it weren't for the defense, the offense had nothing to offer.

Hey, I'm a shareholder. I have autographs of Elijah Pitts, John Brockington and that crew! I've practiced in Don Hutson center for my St. Norbert college football team when we had games on turf. I'm not a Packer basher. But we have to call a spade a spade when we see it. I hope the Pack can improve before and during playoffs, or it'll surely be '1 and done'!

Please...win by 10 pts on the road? Gift pick 6's count. Why is it that GB mistakes mean we are bad, when opponent mistakes mean we' re lucky? Stop being biased against our team. No, we're not world beaters and will need to work to go deep in the playoffs. I got that.

But can we at least be level headed and consistent with how we assess performance?

Don't get me wrong, I love a 10 point win on the road, and I'm happy this team is 10-4. McCarthy can say that style points don't matter, at some point though, this team needs to figure out how to put together two good halves of football before the clock strikes midnight. The defense is doing enough to get us by, and I'll take all the gift pick 6's that Palmer and Bridgewater throw our way in the coming weeks.
How can you not be incredibly discouraged with how erratic this offense has been playing since Denver kicked our asses in week 8? Minnesota was our only convincing win since the struggle started. Our 6-0 start showed that this team has great potential to air it out even without a running game. I'm just scratching my head what combination of factors is now causing this impotence: nagging injuries on the offensive line, Montgomery and Quarless missing half the season, play calling, WR not getting separation, dropped passes, still no reliable running attack, etc???

I don't think anyone should give up on this season yet. I'm looking forward to the next two weeks to get it sorted out with two respectable showings, hopefully W's. It is crazy the stars are aligning for the final two weeks of the season likely being the reverse of the playoff schedule--@Ariz & vsMin then vsMin & @Ariz. Those games make four great opportunities to build some momentum to make a run all the way to the NFC championship and beyond. Again, also crazy that we then have a chance go back further in our regular season schedule to either play @Car again or vsSea again for a bid to the Super Bowl in San Fran's stadium again.

Rogers said in post game news conference, regarding that last pick "I tried to get it to 'Wood', but underthrew it!" I think he was being funny, but the dull press guys didn't pick up on it and it landed like a lead balloon. Those post game press conferences are unnaturally dreary. But that's for another comment. Turnovers are part of the game and like tackles, yards gained and passes completed, are plays you try to make more than the other guy. So, no gifts, just good plays and bad plays. That's why they play the game, to see who can make the most good plays.

Things are liable to look disappointing when we play playoff calibre teams, but the Pack will make postseason again.

Loss of Jordy turned this team from the best in the league (in preseason), to something that looks very 8-8 ish, even though they have won more. Hope that in 2016 JN gets back to what he was before, so we can see the dominating passing game return.

He (Jordy) did say the stuttering offense was not down to him being out injured, but it is.

Who cares if they "look 8-8ish" they are 10-4 and are a two plays away from being 12-2 as well. Why can't we just accept that this isn't one of the Packers teams that walks away from games with 42-21 victories. Personally, I like the adversity this team has faced and the way the defense is playing.

The defense is really good. Aside from some questionable formations leaving the middle of the field wide open to be gashed by Murray they played really well in pass defense and especially in the red zone. The red zone defense holding to field goals and the multiple Raiders pass interference calls won this game. McCarthy and Arodge did nothing to help this team win today. The unorganized miscommunication is not "adversity" its bad coaching and preparation. When you create your own adversity by poor coaching and QB decisions it's not a positive attribute, its a weakness. The time management at the end of each half and timeout usage or lack thereof, the calls coming in late and checks at the line with 3 seconds left is all maddening. If the offense continues to take entire halves of football off just sputtering in unorganized quagmire playoff teams with playoff quarterbacks are going to be just fine if the defense has to do it all. The special teams is solid. The defense is a top 10 unit, unfortunately the offense is bottom 5.

I still think the lack of production on offense is because of the receiving corps. Down Jordy, Adams in a sophomore slump, Montgomery out, Quarless out... you add all these together and consistency will be affected. The McCarthy offense has always predicated on receivers getting favorable one on one matchups. We've always had Jordy, Jennings, Driver, guys who could beat a #1 corner until this year. I believe Montgomery was beginning to come on and create separation but he rolled his ankle. The offense is still creating favorable matchups but what I do not believe is that the WR's are winning said matchups. Cobb is great but they can blanket him when Jones and Adams can be covered by a single CB. Rich Rod also isn't beating LB's in one on one situations. Until an outside threat emerges the offense is going to be what it has been.

My interpretation is that for some reason you are embarrassed about a team that won their game today and has reached the playoffs for the 7th consecutive season. If that is correct then I recommend that you become a Jaguars or Titan or Browns or Rams fan and then you can embarrassed on nearly every play. Thanks, Since '61

If a team doesn't have talent, then good play isn't expected from them. That's embarrassing, but not in the same way.

If what happened to this team last January is fine with you, then maybe you would enjoy being a Jaguars fan.

I'm not sure what last January has to do with this season. As for the Seattle game I was not happy with the way it ended, the defense collapsed in the last 4 minutes and the result was a loss in overtime. However, I'm over it and I'm looking forward to the playoffs this season.
As for my reference to the other teams my point was that if you are embarrassed by the Packers then it would not take very long for you, as a fan of one of those teams, to wish your team made the playoffs and had a chance to win the SB every season. Even as a Packers fan I can assure you that the day will come when you look back at the last 23 seasons and wish the Packers could reach this level again. You're too young to remember the 70s and 80s so I understand that you cannot relate to how good we have it now and have had since 1992. I'm also sorry that you cannot appreciate and enjoy this current era of Packer success for what it is. Thanks, Since '61

I could not like this comment enough since61.

NFL playoffs are one and done. If they restarted and did it over again it would have a different result pretty much every single time. What you ask from your team is consistency, talent and a chance at the roll of the dice that is the playoffs.

I would have killed for a team this "bad" in the 70's or 80's.

If my team was greater than the some of it's parts, it would be more fun to watch, even if they lost.

But when you have talent and just piss games and seasons away, that's what disgusts and disappoints me.

The reason stuff like what happened last January continues to befall us is that, most of the time we win despite that type of self shitting. So people just accept it. It doesn't get cleaned up, and it comes back to bite us in the ass.

My interpretation is that just because other teams are worse than you, doesn't make you 'good'. I am proud of my team when they play well, play with spirit and play their hearts out, win or lose. But just because they win, for whatever reason, while they look disorganized, inept and ineffective much of the game, similar to what you'd expect early in preseason, is nothing to be proud about. How can you look forward to the post season when you see other playoff contenders playing strong with consistency and even dominating (like the Pack did so often last year) and then you look at the Pack's Up and Down season? It's not a confidence builder that's for sure. However, getting into the dance is the goal for regular season. Things can change and anything can happen. Let's hope we get the unexpected pleasant surprises because 'probability' is not on our side! Merry Christmas!

Since 61, I don't know why some people are running this team down. They are 10 - 4, & realistically should be 12 & 2. Crosby's missed kick against Detroit, & the Horrid Downpour against Chicago cost us 2 wins. Whatever, this team looks to me like they are going to peak at the right time. I'd like to play at Lambeau, but this time of year, I wonder how much of an advantage it is? Yes, it's better to be at home as a rule, but the weather is such an equalizer, I wonder how much of an advantage we have. I personally don't think this is the Frozen Tundra team anymore. Unless we can get a bye, I don't see that much of an advantage if the weather is bad. JMO

Regarding your last post going back to 1992, whenever I get the chance, I always want to go back a little farther & give Don Majakowski (Magic) some credit. IMO he was a Very Good QB with NO COACHING, & VERY LITTLE team around him. He really was the 1st QB to get us out from under the door mat, & back in the playoffs. He makes the list of 1 of my favorite Green Bay Packers.LVT

LVT - good post! I remember the Majik man well. He played hard, but you are correct he didn't have much around him and his coaching was questionable at best. He was the beginning of what has become a long term turn around. Prior to him Lynn Dickey gave us some respectability as well. Beyond that we have to go all the way back to the Lombardi days when my Packer fanhood began. As for our 2015 Packers I see no reason to be negative about a 10-4 team. If our defense remains strong we can keep any game close enough for the offense to make enough plays to win. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

I come just after that n my fandom. My earliest memories are Brockington and the endless search for a good quarterback of the 70s. Hunter, Tagge, Del Gaizo, Hadl, Whitehurst, Wright.

The fans sure do have to appreciate what its been like with Favre and Rodgers and know its not always so easy to have a top signal caller on your team.

He threw for 4 TDs and Nitschke made an interception late in the game to preserve the Packers 28-27 win. Unfortunately. that was Phil Bengston's 1st year as HC and the Packers did not make it to the postseason. Thanks, Since '61

I believe Don Horn was part of the Alden Roche deal, the small but quick D-Lineman that was a solid player for the Packers. Horn was tall and had that quick release like Marino. I lived in San Diego for several years and was at the game when the Packers played the Chargers and the Packers behind Starr built a large lead. Towards the end of the 3rd quarter they put Horn in because it looked like they had the game in the bag and Horn was a local hero at San Diego State. It almost backfired, Horn threw a couple of picks and the Chargers scored quickly to the point the Packers put Starr back in the game.

Lou - I remember that game also. I believe that it was a Monday night game because it was televised back in NY. Starr came back in late in the game to lead the Packers to a game winning FG in the last 2-3 minutes of the game. Thanks, Since '61

Since 61, This is a belated post. I just spent the last 2 days, at Paris, (Got My Ass Kicked). We were talking a few days back about all the Good GB QB's we've had through the years including Lynn Dickey, & The Majik Man, who didn't have much in the way of teams around them.

I watched GB games from about 1956. As a kid, my Dad took me to County Stadium to see Tobin Rote play. When you look at what he did without a team, not just with GB, but with Detroit & beyond. He deserves to be mentioned with all the great GB QB's, including Starr, Dickey, I'm putting Majik in here, Favre, & Rodgers.

You talk about a QB carrying a team? He was the whole team and holds somes amazing stats for all time QB's.

I'm sorry this post has nothing to do with anything current. I just didn't have the time to respond the other day, & without question, Tobin Rote deserves to be mentioned. I'm glad I got a chance to see him play. LVT

It was raining, the field was sloppy. We found out that we made the playoffs around the time of the opening kick, while the Raiders were fighting for playoff life and they were AT HOME. The score could have been much higher for the Packers if they could have converted a few "should have been made" plays. I'm proud of this team and their 30-20 win in Oakland. I do think the offense will get better, as a whole, in the next few weeks. It'll be interesting, that's for sure. GPG!

A S#ITTY field can just destroy players' cuts and quickly lead to tentativeness. It seemed pretty evident to me the playing surface and conditions played a huge role in the overall play of the game.

I don't know, Lacy looked hesitant in making his cuts all day. There weren't many holes opened up all day, but Starks seemed to do a bit better. Speaking of Starks, he officially has a fumbling problem.

Jake Ryan.......oof. ILB is very high on my wishlist for next year. Also, I hate to say this, but I'm not entirely sure that CM3 is a great pass rusher. I say just leave him at ILB and use his motor and range there.

I thought Lacy was definitely not running like he did last week. Lacy was tiptoeing. Ran out of bounds a few times just short of the 1st down marker when he could have kept going and gotten a first down. I will say the holes weren't there like they were last week either. In that case however, I like Starks better as he adjusts to what's in front of him better and finds some space to run in better than Lacy IMO.

Agree, Jersey Al. Starks slashing style worked better, but the fumbles make using him problematic. Not thrilled that Cobb has to be a main RB and best WR at the same time. Not blaming MM for using him there for a time, but the fumbling has to stop. I am not sure what is up with Lacy - he ran hard last week but not so much today.

Don't you think MM is just looking for a way to get the ball in Cobbs hands since it doesn't seem like he can beat anyone on a one on one. The only way the Packers moved the Ball yesterday was PI penalties it seemed. If the WR was open Rodgers was to buy running or ducking it seemed. Just SOOOO frustrating!

I get that the PI calls helped the Packers move the ball but one could make the argument that if the PI didn't occur the receivers would be completing the receptions. Most of the PI plays are when a guy got beat and he tried to prevent the big play.

If Lacy doesn't hit the hole hard and straightforward, you're right, he starts tiptoeing and he's done! As soon as he goes sideways, play over. If he's not in Power Mode full speed ahead, he gets tripped up too easily. This is his weakness. MM needs to call plays which are 'quick hitters' and give him the burst forward he needs, especially on the goal line, where he can use his power. He is not a 'dancer'. If I were his coach, I'd have him study film of John Brockington and how he'd lift those knees and churn his feet and just bowl over people. But I'm not the coach! Damn.

I dunno, I.F. I still think the opposite. I'm NOT saying that CM3 has ever been a truly extraordinary pass rusher, but he's very good. I've always maintained that by far the best place for him is on the outside, and I've only grudgingly agree to his move to the middle because the Packers had absolutely nothing else inside. As I see it, I still say that the Packers need to acquire at least two serviceable ILBs, one because Ryan is most certainly not a sure things, and two, because Ryan is still the best they have other than CM3. But ideally, they get two ILBs and Matthews goes back outside, especially when we remember that Peppers is near the end, and we've always had a collection of JAGs on the "other side" anyway. Even if CM3 is "only very good" ILBs aren't as priceless or as difficult to find as OLBs.

And besides, can we honestly say that CM3 has been very good for the past five games or so? He was almost invisible against the Raiders. Personally, I think the move inside caught a few teams off guard, but now that opposing offenses have gotten used to the idea, Matthews has been more or less marginalized on the inside.

Agree about Lacy. He needs to run crazy and he needs to run straight ahead. Otherwise he's just a big, slow target.

Yeah, I'm sympathetic to that argument about clay. I actually think he's been really good at ilb all year, it's just not as flashy of a position so we don't notice him as much. I think his best attributes are his relentless motor and speed, which i like at ilb. However, I could see him being back at OLB next year since there's at least a decent chance that peppers, Neal, and Perry are all gone.

They won. That's what is important. But when it comes down to it, if this team can't get Lacy going, they are going nowhere in the playoffs. (meaning after they beat Minny in round 1)

Cobb is the only pass catcher on this team that doesn't straight up suck right now. Maybe Abby. Maybe.

Teams are playing 1 high safety and press man all game. Loading the box. Daring our WRs to beat them. They can't do it and MM/AR have not been able to adjust the route concepts to give them a better chance.

I knew Jordy was important. But this is a pop-gun offense without him.

Randall is going to make mistakes as a rookie corner. But the future is bright in the secondary. We absolutely NEED an ILB and OLB early in the draft. Maybe a TE who can bust the seam or a fast outside WR that can run routes and actually catch.

This is a good team. Not a great team.

True dat, Idiot Fan. In this league, we have a chance. GB is going to have to give Abby 70 snaps, hope Monty returns and can be the dual threat at RB transitioning sometimes to a WR, and I suppose using a mixture of JJ, Adams, and Janis for specific roles: Janis to take the top off at times, JJ near the red zone, and Adams - well I have no real role for him but he has talent - just try to get the guy in the open field once a game to see what YAC he can get.

The irony for me, I'm a beleiver that when teams went to man on Rogers his game went to downhill, Those zone coverage teams he ate them for breakfast. He was all universe against that type of D.

When Oakland had that one play which was a zone, he had two guys so open it was nuts and of course he hit one of them for the TD.

Thus, his game has gone down as defenses have been able to cover our guys one on one. Lack of seperation has made his job a lot harder this year.

Congratulations to the Packers and to all my fellow Packer fans on reaching the playoffs for the 7th consecutive season. On to the division title. Sloppy but good road win. OL was solid and Mack only made one play. The officiating was terrible. Defense played great in the 4th quarter.
Need to work on red zone offense. We should have had 2 more TDs in the 4th quarter.
Not sure why we called for a pass just before the 2 minute warning. Run the ball and the clock and get out of there. A win is a win an we're in the playoffs so no complaints. On to AZ. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

Exactly right.
Making it to the playoffs for the 7th consecutive season is not a small thing. How many teams can say that? 2 teams. Packers & Patriots.

Mack basically was non existent after he just had 5 sacks in a game.

Officiating was horrible. I maybe in the minority, but I did not see any offensive pass interference on Jones' TD. I didn't think his first pass interference penalty was one, and definitely not that TD.

I didn't mind the pass there, Just horrible decision by Rodgers. Can't make that throw. And if he is going to throw that that is the one spot he can't throw it. Needed to throw it deep in the end zone.

The spoiled fan comments often really annoy me. I missed the 60s but lived through the purgatory of the 70s and 80s, and watched probably all the games save a handful when something important came up. We have had 2 HOF QBs. I am satisfied with getting to NFC championship games, even if we lose. But the one and dones are not acceptable to me. With AR in place, I suspect that Mel Kiper could churn out 9-7, maybe 10-6, teams with good coaches. I think TT and MM are better than that. If that makes me spoiled, so be it.

I didn't say worst, I said my least favorite. And I wouldn't argue about being fortunate in the years I've experienced with the Packers ( 4? losing seasons out of 27). The whole 'spolied' thing is stupid. These are the years that this team needs to be competing for championships, because we are highly unlikely to be so lucky in the QB department once Rodgers retires. These are competitive sports, too, the whole 'just happy to be there' attitude doesn't really fit. We are now 24 years in to having Favre or Rodgers as the starting QB, and great as it is to have won 2 super bowls over that span, with that level of QB play, it could be called slightly underwhelming.

I keep waiting for the offense to finally get in gear, and I'm disappointed again.
Lacy did not run with the same determination he had last week. You could see that on his very first run.
Way too many passes that should have been caught, weren't. These guys get paid millions of dollars to CATCH A DAMN FOOTBALL. No excuses!!!
The defense held the opponent to 20 points--they did their job.
However, if we play Arizona like we played today we'll lose.

This one was ugly for the offense most of the day. The Packers played on offense like they knew their situation (already in the playoffs and even if they lose both upcoming road games the home game against the Vikings is for the division).

They Packers did just win a road game to go to 10 wins for the season and are in the playoffs so don't try to make this sound like a funeral. The defense was solid and made the plays to give the team the lead and they kept it. Playing on the road without their top cover corner, they gave up only 20 points, got a pick six and another pick taken inside the 5. The problems of the O have overshadowed how much progress this D has made.

After 14 games people have to stop waiting for this offense to look like the 2014 team. The line is banged up, the backs are plodding and the receiver deficiencies have been well chronicled. The playoffs will be tough - but last year they had the highest scoring offense in the league and the playoffs were still tough anyway.

Well said. I thought they came out flat. If Bulaga, Bakh, and the guards can return to full health in time for the playoffs, this team will look different. Also I think Abby can provide a spark both from the slot but I would play him outside.

Totally agree that the D has taken a step. Needs some playmakers to make some plays, but I think Peppers, CM3 and Daniels are capable, and also think we fared pretty well with two rookie CBs starting. One of the INTs was a gift, but Randall caught it, so I give some credit, maybe minor, but some credit to Randall. I did not see Ryan stinking up the joint, though I saw some issues on occasion, but since Aaron was so negative I will watch the game again when (if) I get a chance. I thought I saw CM3 provide some pressures on occasions, but guess I will watch the LBs since Aaron was kinda negative there too.

My head hurts from watching the game. But a win is a win. Drives me crazy that when we get a turnover, and or great field position, we rarely capitalize on it. Starks fumbles at end of first half and Raiders breeze downfield for touchdown. Also drives me crazy when we are in the redzone and we waste downs passing to Adams and other dumb plays. Thank God the D won this game and played very well for most of game and when it counted. Much like the Lions game it was a tale of two halves.

Speaking of TO's, is it mandatory GB wastes at least two a game trying to set up a play. That's so going to bite them in the playoffs.

- Good enough for a W against a team that really wanted this one.
- Not good enough to play against playoff teams yet.
- Amazing we can play this poorly and still win games. (See: like all our wins)
- Still hopeful, but they're running out of season to prove something.
- It's still possible to get hot. Maybe a game that's not in the rain will help.
- This team started flailing in January 2015. Maybe January 2016 will be a different tale.

Not sure what you think they need to prove.

Packers won On The Road, by 10 pts, against a team on the rise w/ plenty of talent, w 3 rookies playing prominent roles.

Are the Packers a juggernaut offense of seasons past? No... But they are a 10 Win team and w/ 2 games remaining they have locked up a play berth, have a very good chance to win the division (again), and are finding a way to Win, even when they haven't had their "A" game.

And hear I always thought the mark of a quality team is to Win when you're not at your best!

Winning on the road is never easy in the NFL, somehow the Packers are winning by 10 pts on the road when not playing their best!

Care about Winning and celebrate it! F style points!

Dan,
Come on. If you've ever read any comment from me, I'm one of the most optimistic people on these threads. I am in no way dissatisfied with any of our wins. Or our record. Or this regime's accomplishments. Winning in the NFL is hard. And if we have a new identity because of our D.......I'm all for it. My comments are meant to voice frustration, same as Nagler.

I am proud of this team. Damn proud. They have grit. And they seem to be under the radar a bit. And that's probably a good thing for once. But alot of people are nervous because they haven't put too many consistent games together. And we're crazy injured. The playoffs are going to be a gauntlet. I want to see a display that tells me they can beat AZ, Sea, Carolina.

And if they have to go in and wing it....I'll take it. Cuz....NFL. But I think we're all sharing an uneasy feeling even though we hope for the best. I don't believe we have to win next week to prove anything. But I would like to see them compete with the big boys. This offense needs some confidence.

Great day to be a Packers fan! Seven straight playoff appearances and a nice road win. The game at Arizona is now irrelevant to winning the division.

Sloppy, but entertaining, game. Some big plays and big hits, including our old friend Chuck.

Another bad weather game. 10-4, you'd think they were 4-10 after reading most of the posts. Quit whining, the D made plays and the Pack put up 16 in the 2nd half, should have been a lot more. The Raiders had everything to play for. Hope Shields gets back next game. These receivers can't catch on a dry day. The glass is half full people. I'll lose faith when this team is the lolions, rams, bears, browns, jags, or any other bottom feeder.

The weather was really bad, again. 2 bad weather games in a row on sloppy field can only help this team in the playoffs.

The game wasn't perfect. But not every game is going to be. I would rather the team have to fight to win games then to blow everyone out.

The thing I really like about this team is it finds ways to put points on the board in the 4th quarter and it finds ways to stop teams from scoring in the 4th. It's something that will give this team a shot in every game.

I don't understand some of you that complain SOOOO much after a WIN! There's no satisfying some of you - jeez!

Here's what I remember from today's game:

- Rodgers is still missing some easy throws
- Rodgers to Jones back-shoulder passes warmed my heart
- I'm almost done trying to root for Adams
- Lacy WAS NOT running hard, or as hard, as the previous week.
- I think Abby should be seeing more snaps
- That INT intended for Woodson - I mean Janis, was Rodgers' gift to Woodson. NO ONE can tell me different.
- On that long drive where the Offense got into a rhythm, where the hell was Lacy before that ugly-try-to-get-cute-play-action-pass attempt!?!?!?!?
- If Janis doesn't return a damn KO I'm going to jump off the hype train.
- This Defense can be better than 2010's.
- I think Peppers is going to really show up when the Playoffs start.
- I keep forgetting Randall is a converted CB. He needs to learn how to use his hands more.

Aside from Randall's mental hiccups, would this game have been a blow out win for the Packers???

Bingo Drea. Usually it took 2 seasons for the Packers to get 10 wins. I'm one of the old guys who lived through the 70's and 80's. I got spoiled early when they won the 1st 2 SB's. Then 20 plus years of shit.

Damn, Icebowler, most of us can't compete if you can reference the 50s. Excluding Lombardi's first year in 1959 (so 1950 to '58), GB went 32-74, with 2 ties, for a 29.6% winning percentage. Brutal.

Most of the folks posting here could claim (rightfully so I believe) to be sophisticated fans. We've trained ourselves, the best we can, to spot mistakes. Essentially, we view the games much more as coaches do rather than regular fans.

While there is nothing wrong with viewing the games in this manner, it does tend to detract from the sheer joy of winning. I've seen Packers fans with much less knowledge of the team or game have much more enjoyment over a win than I have. Sometimes I envy them.

I think most posters are happy with the win. Except a few that are impossible to please no matter what. I kind of feel that Nagler set the tone early by listing a lot of his frustrating observations about the game. And so everyone is dissecting reasons and areas the team could be better. I've noticed that this version of the Packers likes a good struggle this year. Doesn't make me any less excited for the season. Any win we've had has been amazing. But talking about the game lends a different mentality. We're all just a bunch of armchair GMs and HCs. If this team was perfect, this board wouldn't exist. Go pack go.

This team is 10-4. What do you people actually want? Good win on the road against a team fighting for a playoff spot. You are what your record says you are. Good enough for me. Only one gripe: Joe Whitt. I have been a Packers fan for a long time. Best talent i've ever seen at DB. But you can't play bump and run without the bump. Joe Whitt is hindering the development of what I think could be the best D backfield in the league. Other than that a win is a win baby. And by 10 pts, with a bs call by refs to take a td away from Jones. I thought contact is OK within 5 yrds of the LOS. Well if 1st is on the 5 then there can't be any offensive PI.

I disagree on Whitt. I think he is a good CB coach. I do like to see some bump, but I am not sure that our current guys fit that approach.

I disagree with your understanding of the OPI. Here are the rules:

Summary From The Official NFL Rule Book - Rule 8, Section 5
"It is pass interference by either team when any act by a player more than one yard beyond the line of scrimmage significantly hinders an eligible player’s opportunity to catch the ball. Pass interference can only occur when a forward pass is thrown from behind the line of scrimmage, regardless of whether the pass is legal or illegal, or whether it crosses the line.

"Defensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is thrown until the ball is touched.
"Offensive pass interference rules apply from the time the ball is snapped until the ball is touched."
incidental, the ruling should be no interference.

Article 2. Prohibited Acts by both teams while the ball is in the air
Acts that are pass interference include, but are not limited to:
g) Initiating contact with an opponent by shoving or pushing off, thus creating a separation in an attempt to catch a pass.

Eligible Receivers
Article 1. Legal Contact Within Five Yards

Within the area five yards beyond the line of scrimmage, a defensive player may chuck an eligible receiver in front of him. The defender is allowed to maintain continuous and unbroken contact within the five-yard zone, so long as the receiver has not moved beyond a point that is even with the defender.

Article 2. Illegal Contact Within Five Yards

Within the five-yard zone, if the player who receives the snap remains in the pocket with the ball, a defender may not make original contact in the back of a receiver, nor may he maintain contact after the receiver has moved beyond a point that is even with the defender.

Offensive Pass Interference rules apply from the time the ball is snapped until is touched. After 1 yard, a WR may not initiate contact with a defender. The 5 yard chuck rule pertains to things that a defender can do to an eligible receiver before the pass is in the air: note that the 5 yard rule is silent as to what a WR can do to the defender. The rule is for the benefit of the defense, not the offense. Refs allow some contact, and this was not an egregious case of OPI (50/50 case imo), but since JJ got called for OPI previously he wasn't likely to get the benefit of the doubt on the TD catch.

I agree with the lack of bump n run. That for sure would have cancelled out one of the Raider's TDs. Randall doesn't have the speed (like a Shields) to recover when beat off the line.

He doesn't need to jam him, but he has to disrupt a WR just a little. I don't think Cooper wasted ANY steps after the snap. Just a totally free run.

Aaron hit it right on the head, this team is hard to watch. That was a defense ranked in the mid 20's or so in most defensive catagory yet the Packers offense, the one we had so much hope for after last week struggled once again.

News Flash.... After 14 Games and a Bye Week if they still play like poop, look like poop, smell like poop, they probaly are POOP!!!

Lot's on blame to go around but I'm out of excuses and can no longer "Spin It" in a positive way. Adams is a com-plete and absolute bust! I keep watching allen Robinson tearing it up and all I can think is WHAT WERE YOU THINKING TED T!!

The Packers have to overhaul that WR Corps, with exception of Cobb and Nelson. If Abby and Monty can catch on great, but Adams is a joke and they KEEP putting him out there!!!!!!!!!! WTF!!!! He Can't CATCH the ball!!

Lastly I saw Rodgers mouthing the F word, maybe the MF'ing word on the sidelines. All I can say is you better check your play before you call out ANYONE. A few less commercials and IG Pics with your stupid Starwars Robe with your Girlfiend would be a awesome start!!

I hope you are wrong about this year, but fear you are right. See no reason to think they will become something they no longer are. But I still have hope because you never know. Glad we won but we won in large part because of the benefit of mistakes by Oakland (PIs) that the other playoff teams likely will not make. At least the D took advantage and stepped up to seal the win

I do too Mojo. Besides his comments tis past week, how many times did Rodgers turn around and glare at the bench yesterday. Maybe a few times it was out of frustration after Adams and Janis let sure TD's slip right through their hands but I sense not all might be well. In McCarthy's defense Rodgers hasn't been Rodgers all season save for a few games here and there. In Rodgers defense they run the SAME formations they've ran for the last 5 years.

This is the hardest Packer team to watch since the 70s. Most of the games we did win were flukey and the three of the four we lost were in the final seconds or minutes.

Ok, Packers win and apparently that isn't good enough??? When did winning become worse then losing?

Was the game great? No. Did the team play great? No. did they lose? No.

Let's look at some positives. They beat a team by 10 which could have been more, on the road that came into the game with a lot of confidence, in really bad weather. They overcame adversity in this game as well. They did not play their best game and still found a way to win.

Can we sit here after the game and be happy they won and are in the playoffs for the 7th straight year? How many other teams can say that?

Had the ball not been wet it would have not sailed and our guy serious out of place would not have caught it.

Is that true? Why? Is Woodson gunning for another record? Wasn't there still too much time remaining to intentionally throw an interception?

Thank you.

What was not hilarious, unfortunately, is how extremely unnecessary it was to pass at all in that situation, much less attempt to force a TD throw... and how absolutely atrocious the throw was.

Let's face it, whomever decided to throw the ball in a obvious drain-the-clock series gets a negative grade- whether that's MM or AR checking out at the line- and Rodgers definitely gets a negative grade on the decision to throw that ball, as well as a negative on the throw itself, which was thrown horribly behind the WR, right into the two trailing defenders.

Ugly. ugly. ugly.

For me you nailed it. Hit on things I noticed like Mathews looked lost today. They have screwed with his position so much he doesn't know what to do.

Davante Adams is a bust. Too bad the coaches refuse to see it for themselves. Have to justify that dam high draft pick. In all fairness to him, he caught a lot of quick slant passes for short yardage in a spread offense. Analyst said the NFL would be a big challenge for him. They were correct.

Good thing Rollins was just standing there in the wrong place and got that pick six, otherwise he did nada. Dam tired of hearing 'he's new'. The receiver who ate him up all day was new too, played college ball last year and looks like a player.

This team is in trouble going forward. Three more games and the season is over and for naught. Way too many mistakes at this point.

Matthews made a lot of plays in the pass rush - re-watch the game and you will see. He was responsible for three sacks, although he didn't get credit for any. Clay funneled two to Peppers who was in the right place at the right time,

It sure looked like Damarius Randall got shook up on a play somewhere in the late third quarter, slow to get up off the turf, and seemed a little dazed or hurt.

Watching him the rest of the game, he wasn't quite himself it seemed, but it was mostly whenever he was getting up off the turf he look really weak and uncomfortable.

I am concerned he injured his shoulder or arm in some way, but played through it.

Anyone else notice this?

Yes, very slow getting off the turf, even after minor contact.

I noticed one play where he was laying there and he waved off a hand to get up. I thought maybe he got the wind knocked out of him.

Thought on Janis's one long KO return he could have gone all the way if he cut it inside. A lot of speed, but no wiggle.

Yeah, we were commenting on that tonight as well.. at least from the broadcast angle, it looked like had he cut it back inside he had one defender to beat with a lot of open space to attempt to beat him.

Hard to say what it looked like from the entire field view, and perhaps Janis was concerned about coughing up the ball with hard contact in the slick conditions and just decided to preserve the excellent field position he already had.

One thing I did notice is that when he has a crease and he hits it full speed, he is hard to bring down. It seems like when he has to slow down to make a cut he isn't going to go very far. You are correct he doesn't have a lot of wiggle.

Either way, that play I think was the turning point in the game. Raiders had some big momentum before that play.

He needs to take some knees. We have too many drives starting behind the 20.

My early nomination for the "Ugly" list:

The ridiculous slaughtering of Jared Abbrederis' name throughout the broadcast..

You would have thought a producer would have been in someones ear like, "pssst, dude, it's AB-ra-DARE-us, not 'Ah-BRAY-Dis' "

What... you mean none of the whiners are going to piss and moan that McCarthy called "The Play That Shall Never Be Called" - the John Kuhn fullback dive - and ran it in for a touchdown?

It was not a dive play.

After checking, I should not have contradicted you. I would have called it a a counter, as there is a fake to the HB, and two Raiders do take false steps (can't catch their numbers but they are lined up opposite Bulaga and outside of him). Anyway, that is what I thought it was.

However, technically AR handed the ball to Kuhn first and then faked a toss to the HB. I checked several websites for definitions. Quoting (Counter play): "An intentional misdirection run on the part of the offense. The quarterback fakes a lateral toss to one back who’s heading right, running parallel to the line of scrimmage. The quarterback then turns and hands off to the remaining runner in the backfield, generally a fullback, who runs toward the middle of the line, hoping to find an opening between either guard and the center.

I also checked for the definition of a "dive play" I have to admit that this play qualifies as a dive or blast. Football outsiders defines a dive play as "A run up the middle where the offense is hoping for at least minimal yardage. Usually used when the offense needs 2 yards or less to gain a first down or touchdown." Quoting other sites: "The Dive Play is the most basic running play in football. The dive requires a running back to take the handoff and “dive” into the center of the line. A dive can take place between a center and guard or between a guard and a tackle." Quoting: "A fullback dive requires the fullback to become a battering ram, taking the direct path and bulling through the line. The dive is used for short yardage plays and goal line plays. It can be used anywhere on the field, though, trying to hit the defense with a quick run inside while it’s defenders are concentrating on other threats."

At any rate, my use of terminology is not so clear that I should have baldly contradicted you, Marpag1.

If I hear MM say that "we have a few things to clean up" one more time, I'm gonna puke. Who does he work for? The Packers or Molly Maid? It's the 16th week- if you don't get it together soon, he'll have all off season to clean up anything he wants. One thing is for sure- we haven't peaked too soon!

All coaches (at least the good ones) say that. MM isn't going to, and shouldn't, say anything else. What would you prefer him to say?

We are having a bit of a problem with perspective here folks...

Had a great weekend. Skied excellent powder, got to watch a Packers victory at a bar with my son home from college, went Christmas carroling and then to a white elephant party with people I love. Didn't realize how depressed I should have been until I tried to catch up on some comments on my favorite site on this inter web thing.

I guess I'll have to rethink things. Instead of counting my blessings that my team is 10-4 and headed to the playoffs, I'll lament that our receivers can't get open and often drop the ball. Instead of celebrating that we're in the postseason for the 7th straight year with one of the winningest coaches in history, I'll focus on how much trouble we have on third and short and contemplate with great hindsight "could have been" moves the GM might have made a few years ago. Instead of understanding how tough it is to stay at the top with a chance at the prize year after year in a system designed to thwart that very thing, I'll meditate on why we're not as good as the Cardinals who we haven't even played yet.

In a few days I'll sit down to a great meal in a nice house with riches and freedom that most of the world cannot fathom. I'll be surrounded by my smokin' hot wife and loved ones to celebrate the birth of the savior of mankind. And I will bitch and moan that the gravy is touching the cranberry...

Great perspective Doug in Sandpoint. If you look at what we have, our cup is more than half full. Lots to be thankful for.

I have no problem with people criticizing this team for winning 30-20 or for limping to a 10-4 record. Reality is that the Packers are not playing up to potential and are a sloppy team. It is disappointing to see so many mistakes and missed opportunities. It is no different than watching your kid do poorly at a task or repeatedly make the same mistake. Let's hope that the coin drops for this offense before Rodgers retires.

We are a frustrated fan base because we came into this season expecting really big things. Losing in the playoffs is not big. I don't see us competing against Carolina or Arizona. We will win one and then lose to one of those two. I know anything can happen, but something crazy would need to happen for us to win.

Barring 2010, we never out perform. We either under perform or right perform our expectations. Really the only surprise on 2010 was that we won on the road every week, We under performed the regular season. I felt that team along with the 2009 team had a real chance at beating anybody. The 2011 team fell apart after what happened to Philbins son (only way I can explain how bad they played). Last year we should have won it all as well and fell short on a complete fluke. Can we get a fluke to go our way? That is what it is going to take to beat either Arizona or Carolina or New England. So we need three flukes. I'll buy a lotto ticket too.

We like 10 wins, but we hate that the Packers are not part of the list above. And for good reason.... If it was 1987, I would be dancing in the streets. This team was supposed to go deep in the playoffs. Yes, we are disappointed and making the playoffs is not enough this season.
