Jim Thorpe was amazing. I had no idea how broadly he excelled. I’d heard of a couple of English guys, C.B. Fry and Max Woosnam who could seemingly do everything without ever truly focusing either. Thorpe was clearly their peer and if there are more that can claim that, I doubt I’d run out of fingers to count them.

Coldworld, thanks for this input; I had never heard of C.B. Fry or Max Woosnam and it was fascinating to read about these Englishmen. Woosnam beating Charlie Chapman at table tennis -using a Butter Knife(!)- was a particularly amusing tidbit. I also loved that Fry allegedly "prepared" for his tying world record long jump by "smoking a cigar" and then finishing his smoke afterward in the changing room, lol. Interesting read.
