Game Recap: Bears Still Suck, Rodgers, Watson Don't in 28-19 Win

Strong second half riddled with big plays reminds all of us that the Bears Still Suck.

The Bears Still Suck. Aaron Rodgers and the struggling Packers put together a complete game to come back against the up-and-coming Bears. The Packers may yet be dead, but not against their rival. Oh, and now the Packers are the NFL's league leader in wins, the first time since the league's inception.

Packers' receiver Christian Watson celebrates his touchdown in the Packers' win over the Bears

Packers' receiver Christian Watson celebrates his touchdown in the Packers' win over the Bears

First Quarter

Starting with the ball, Justin Fields and the Bears got the offense off to a quick start with a 20-yard completion for former Packer Equanimeous St. Brown. After a run of 9 from Fields, the Bears converted a 3rd-and-1 sneak. The Packers stopped an attempted reverse-pass and then a David Montgomery handoff bringing up 3rd and long. Fields would scramble for 7, but was stopped short bringing in kicker Cairo Santos for a 40-yard field goal to open up the scoring 3-0 Bears.

On the Packers first opportunity at their on 18, Aaron Jones took a screen pass for 9 followed by a short AJ Dillon run and a first down. But after a positive and negative Jones run, it was 3rd and long and another screen pass to 33 was stopped to force a Pat O'Donnell punt.

Chicago came back out at their own 30 and after two stuffed David Montgomery runs, Fields hit Cole Kmet for a first down. Then, Justin Fields did what Justin Fields does and popped a long touchdown run to extend the lead to 10-0. More Packers missed tackles gave the quarterback a boost on his run.

Coming back out, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers opened the drive with a 20-yard completion to receiver Allen Lazard. Another Dillon run netted one more first down at the Bears' 35 to end the first.

Second Quarter

After an AJ Dillon toss play brought up 3rd-and-1, he was able to convert on another short run inside. Jones plays moved the sticks down to the Bears 12, but the drive would ultimately stall inside the 10 with a Mason Crosby field goal to cut the lead to 10-3.

On the ensuing Bears drive, Fields hit Chase Claypool on back to pack passes, but the second was a Rasul Douglas forced fumble recovered by Rudy Ford. On first look, it appeared that Claypool was down - however, review showed the ball was out and the Packers were in business inside Chicago territory. But the Packers were unable to convert going 4-and-out to give it right back.

The next play, Fields had plenty of time in the pocket to go deep back to former Packer St. Brown down to the Packers 7. Jaire Alexander got absolutely roasted by the Bears receiver. David Montgomery took the next handoff in for the touchdown to make it 16-3. Santos missed the kick, however, to keep it that way.

WIth time running low in the second, the Packers were quickly able to get inside the Bears 20 on an Aaron Jones run. Facing a 3rd-and-3, Rodgers canned the play and handed off to Jones, who was stuffed in the backfield. Going for it on fourth down, Rodgers bought time and hit a strike to Christian Watson in the end zone to cut the lead to 16-10 going into halftime.

Third Quarter

After a 7-yard AJ Dillon run, Dillon tripped on second down but wasn't touched. The officials blew the play dead, though, and they were unable to convert the third down play and were forced to punt to start the second. However, the defense showed up when Jaire Alexander blew up a bubble screen on 3rd down for the Bears and the Packers had it right back.

But Green Bay's offensive struggles showed up again, starting the drive with a false start and Randall Cobb drop. Rodgers hit tight end Robert Tonyan on 3rd down, but nowhere near the sticks. O'Donnell would punt it away again.

Sticking with running back David Montgomery, the Bears picked up 7 on first down, then again on second down to move the chains. A screen to Claypool then a stuffed Fields scramble brought up 3rd-and-long, when Fields bought time and found tight end Cole Kmet for the first down inside the Packers 35. Chicago was able to convert their next third down as well, gashing a run inside the Green Bay 10. After a holding call and back-to-back total team defense run stuffs, it was 3rd and goal outside the red zone. Fields was able to complete a pass to Dante Pettis, which would bring out Santos for a field goal to make it 19-10 Bears late in the third.

Aaron Rodgers and the offense came out inside their own 20, where AJ Dillon was stuffed on first down and picked up a couple on second. On 3rd-and-7, Rodgers hit a wide open Watson on the sidelines to sustain the drive, ending the third.

Fourth Quarter

Going deep on first down, Christian Watson went deep, blowing right by his defender. Rodgers underthrew the ball which forced a pass interference penalty, moving green Bay down to the Bears' 26. Chicago picked up an illegal contact penalty on the next play, after Rodgers threw incomplete under pressure. Faking the jet sweep to Watson, Green Bay ran a counter handoff to AJ Dillon who made a house call to cut it to 19-17 Bears early in the fourth. We have a ballgame in the Windy City.

On first down on the next possession, Fields bought time and threw a jump ball to receiver N'Keal Harry who came down with the completion over Alexander at the Packers 30. Another disappointing performance for the highly-compensated corner. Montgomery picked up a few on second down, bringing up 3rd-and-5, which the Packers stuffed to bring Santos back out. The Packers blocked the kick (you read that right) to bring the Packers back out down two. Finally, the Packers special teams are the ones making the big play.

Taking over at the Bears 30 with just over 11 minutes to go, Rodgers and the Packers hit Lazard for a 2nd-and-6 completion to move the chains. AJ Dillon took a toss for 4, and then Rodgers bought time in the pocket and found Dillon for the first down. A run by Dillon and Patrick Taylor moved the sticks yet again - the good guys were driving. Now at the Bears' 32, a completion to Samori Toure set up 3rd-and-3, where AJ Dillon found his way up the gut for the first down. Aaron Jones, finally back in the game, took the net carry for 7, and then he was stopped for a loss and was hurt on the play. On 3rd-and-5, Rodgers overthrew Tonyan in tight coverage to force a Crosby field goal. Tonyan appeared to be held on the replay, but no call was made. Crosby hit the kick and the Packers had the lead 20-19.

Chicago took othe possession at their 30, and started with a completion to Kmet for 5. Montgomery rushed ahead across the 40 and a first down, then Fields missed him on a pass attempt on the next first down. Fields was able to connect with Kmet on second down, though, and quickly the Bears were in business. With the offense moving quickly down the field, Fields dropped and attempted a pass to St. Brown when Jaire Alexander, on a tough day, popped in front for the critical interception. The Packers took over at their own 30 with a chance to kill the game.

Throwing on first down, Rodgers hit Christian Watson over the 50. AJ Dillon took a short handoff and up came the two-minute warning. On the very next play, Rodgers hit Christian Watson across the middle and he ripped on the burners to take it to the house. Up 7, the Packers elected to go for 2 to end the game. Rodgers took the snap and hit Big Dog Marcedes Lewis for the conversion to make it two possessions, 28-19.

Low on time and points, the Bears nickle-and-dimed their way down the field with under a minute remaining. A desperation deep throw was intercepted by Keisean Nixon, and shockingly, the Bears proved they still suck.

What Went Right

The second half! Maybe their most complete half all year, the Packers scored almost at will, and the defense made huge plays when it mattered most. It was really nice to see, finally.

What Went Wrong

First half defense. They stink, stank, stunk. MIssing tackles, leaving receivers open. This unit is grossly underachieving, but that second half will make us forget it quickly.

Offensive MVP

Aaron Rodgers. He avoided mistakes, hit open receivers and did what he does against his property. Love to see it.

Defensive MVP

Jaire Alexander got cooked a few times in this game, but came up huge with his interception to all but seal the game. We know he's elite, but he needs to show it more. We love you, Jaire.

Nice win vs. the Bears.

I can't wait to hear everyone talk about how shitty the defense was when they held a team to 19 points.

I really can't wait for the Packers to continue to play Rodgers because we're not technically 'mathematically eliminated' in a quest for the playoffs which is the football version of Fool's Gold. IR Rodgers or just flat out bench him; it's time to play Love and document on film what he is or isn't. This is the opportunity to do it. We're not making a run at the title. Do something intelligent for the future of this team. Play Love.

Defense was great, great, great all day.

Giving up just a bit over 250 yards passing to the incomparable Justin Fields and just over 400 yards to that dynamic Bears offense is just outstanding defensive play.

Anybody mentioning the Bears missed extra point, blocked FG or that Fields had only thrown for over 200 yards (208) once prior to today is just a hater and doesn't understand Joe Barry's greatness.

I'm still sitting here in awe of what Barry did given all the playmakers on the Bears O. You cannot stop a weapon like Cole Kmet, you can only hope to contain him. Lowry was like a young Cub Buck out there today; a man among boys!

I'm not a fan of Barry, but the fact is the scoreboard shows Bears 19.
... Last time I checked, the math works out to the defense allowing less than 3 touchdowns, and 19 points is less than the league average points allowed per game.

If we are into hard cold logic, what little the Bears had in the passing game worth considering wasn’t available today. I don’t take limiting that score as much reassurance for that reason.

We weren’t good against the run, though curiously they went away from that in the second half. We played soft coverage a lot and we are really struggling to find any pass rush (which may be why we played soft even against that O—I can’t think of another).

While one can only play the team facing you in the field, I didn’t see anything that screams real improvement. Nixon made a great read and react play. Jaire gambled, was 1 for 3, but the one was a big one and Douglas deserves credit for creating Ford’s recovery.

On O, we ran well, particularly Dillon, but that’s a run D that is likely worse than ours. Watson finally got a chance to shine and did and there was a nice call and play to Lewis on the 2 pointer. The rest of the O was Lazard primarily over the middle and nothing attempted it achieved from any other catcher. Not overly impressive beyond the individual. Rodgers was off on long passes to Watson (or Watson was) early, but was good if not great otherwise.

We looked like a team that isn’t as bad as the Bears, but the Bears were bad when they were healthy and they are far from that. Overall I still think that we are a better team on both O
and D than our coaches allow us to be, but that we are nowhere close to being good enough.

Bears Offense has been scoring 20.9 ppg in 2022; Averaging 21.3 over the last three games. The Packers defense held them to less than their average today.

Was it great? No. But it wasn't shittier than the sum of every other defense that Chicago has faced in 2022.

Pretty undermanned today. They were without both their leading rusher (RB) and receiver. Their second best receiver is Kmet, which pretty much illustrates how weak they were and are.

They are more undermanned than they had been, both on O and D. That’s not accounting for their trading away, just injuries. Fields put up the most passing yards that he has all year despite that.

ESB was rarely EVER open while in Green Bay, but he beats our #1 corner on a deep go route? Welcome to the wonderful world of Joe Barry.

Was ESB Rarely EVER open, or was ESB rarely EVER thrown to while in Green Bay?

He had a promising rookie showing, was injured his sophomore year, then he told the press that Aaron Rodgers tells him to ignore what his coaches teach him and do things how Aaron Rodgers thinks it should be done. Then, ESB basically didn't get thrown to anymore.

Only reason they lost is the Bears went pass happy. They could have run the ball down the Packers throats all game but decided not to. Sure the Bears only scored 19 but 2 fluke ST plays stopped 4 points.

So the 12 other games the bears played, they never missed a scoring opportunity unless the opposing defense cold stopped them?

Sample size tends to account for things like that.

I was using those as examples to counter your 20.9ppg statement. Tell me did you think our ST would ever block a FG? Of course not. Yes the Bears missed opportunities to score but their play calling was more of a reason they lost than anything else. The GB D was horrible and Barry needs to be fired. I cannot in good conscience give them a passing grade this week. The Bears have one of the worst OL and teams in general in the NFL. Yet the Bears went up and down the field on the Packers.

So Alexander gave up 13 points on two long passes, but later made an interception and that makes him the Defensive MVP? I'd look harder elsewhere.

Christian Watson is the Offensive MVP, scoring half our points. He is a threat that will make things happen for other players.

The Packers won the second half 18-3. Great to see this team, regardless of record, stick with it, and keep fighting through the fourth quarter. The defense adjusted, and locked the Bears down. Watson's acceleration and top speed is a sight to behold. That guy can roll! While it doesn't excuse anything, MLF is 8-0 against the Bears. Can't help but smile.

I wouldn’t even get any bit excited for barely beating a bears team that is in a total rebuild. They actually let go all their best defensive players, including Roquan Smith, and Robert Quinn who were traded so Chicago can accumulate draft picks for next year. They now have nine picks and over 120 million in cap space to spend. All They have our Montgomery and Justin Fields on offense with Mooney getting hurt and claypool not learning the offense yet . They completely stripped down the Defense. This is a rebuild team and they almost beat the Packers if it was not for a poor route run by the bears receiver st brown not Speeding up and running back to the ball on an anticipation throw. … as far as fields , I thought he had a better game than Aaron Rodgers throwing for over 250 yards in the air and running for over 75 yards on the ground as far as his first interception, I was in anticipation throw and because his receivers are third string receivers, this is something the Bears are looking to build next year on in the draft and with the over 120 million cabp space is getting better receivers …that receiver was so slow out of the route you can blame him like most commenters and radio hosts are doing right now and the second pick was a desperation throw so fields is the real deal . he’s going to be the one taking over This division in the coming years but for the Packers to even celebrate a win like this it’s not even worth it. The team is gone to five and eight won’t even make the playoffs. It’s been sorry sad to see Rodgers make such poor throws today. Better off seeing love now… in my opinion in the first half he looked terrible and I thought Rogers showed
Diminishing skills . Love is the future play him . The bears tanked that second half. Now they are sitting with second overall pick . It was clear Betsy was holding back fields in second half to lose the game. 3rd and 5 with a run up the middle for Montgomery ?? Thanks Betsy for helping packers out and not letting fields run all over us. That’s all I have to say about it.

Also, can one of the Rodgers Disciples here at CHTV give me a couple of reasons why we shouldn't start Love (or at least give him significant playing time) in the last 4 games of the season and why we shouldn't trade Rodgers in the offseason? I am genuinely curious as to what reasons there could be.

3. And would you franchise him, if Rodgers retires? Let alone pay his 20 mil. option year.
He is going to leave GB for the money. Anybody would with this Defense.
The top 20 players in the draft will change. The QBs are deep. Gute will take one!

1. We have the 8th-worst odds in the NFL to make the playoffs, according to FiveThirtyEight, at 4%. Even if we somehow did, we would likely lose in the wild-card. Even if we won out, we still likely wouldn't make it. I think the Packers should look to the future, and instead of further sacrificing the future to chase the slim odds of making the playoffs this year (and even slimmer of making the SB), the Packers should sacrifice present success to drastically improve their chances of winning a championship 3-4 years from now.
2. Why would we trade Love? We at least need to see what we have in him, and also, if the QB class is so deep, we likely wouldn't get much for him. Trade Rodgers, because that frees up oodles of salary cap space from 2024-2026, and we would likely get much better draft compensation.
3. Our defense is bad. There are many, many problems with the Packers currently. The only way to fix them is to enter a rebuild. I don't know why Rodgers would want to stay if he wants to win in the twilight years of his career. Love we could lock up for cheaper for the next 3-4 years. Love has yet to hit his prime, and we could lock him up for cheaper. Rodgers is past his prime and isn't getting any better (not with the Packers and their shoddy supporting cast anyway). To me it's a no-brainer

I have read your posts, and you seem to think that teams should always play to win, and that the ultimate goal is to win games. I agree that teams should always play to win, but that doesn't mean their Front Office must always make win-now moves. Also, I think the other main goal of the NFL is to win championships, not just games.

From my perspective, the Packers shouldn't enter 2023 in a win-now mode. As you said, the defense is bad, and the Packers wouldn't be winning a championship anytime with it. Not to mention, Rodgers is aging, and we're already over the cap in 2023. Adding a couple of rookies wouldn't fix the problems on the 2022 Packers; our problems run deep, and we need a year of rebuilding to turn the page on a new era; Trade away all of our veteran players without a future on the Packers for 2023 draft capital, and use the upcoming draft to lay the foundation for the next era of Packers football. Not only, then, will we have a good foundation of young players on cheap contracts, we will have lots of cap space (because our veteran players on large contracts will have been traded away) to make contender-esque moves. That is the ideal situation. That is the process the Bills used to go from perennial bottom-feeders to Super Bowl contenders, that is the process the Bears are using (they will have over 100m of cap space in 2023, and have a very bright future ahead of them), and that is the process we should follow.

Simply put, sacrificing the little chance we have of winning now makes our chances of winning in the future drastically better. We should do this as opposed to trying to win now (when we don't have a very good shot) and making our future even more miserable. Such a path would be the 70s-80s 2.0, we would likely be bottom feeders for a large number of years.

Edit: Also, why would we take a QB (that likely won't be Stroud or Young) when we have Jordan Love instead? 3 years of studying behind A-Rod, one of the best to play the game, in his prime is irreplaceable. I think we need to see what Love can do for the next 4 games before we even CONSIDER taking a QB, he did look very polished on those 9 snaps. Why would we delay a future transition to a young QB when we have one right here? At least see what he can do. To not even do that would be unfair to Love, who deserves to have a shot.

So Love is Rodgers 2.0 like when we replaced favre. You don’t strike gold twice. I don’t have faith in this front office and this is the reason. Fans still think they are smarter then everyone and Love is the next Rodgers. The FO put together this awful defense and even the best quarterback in the league would have issues with playing catch up every game. Also the offensive line is going in the wrong direction. I want Love to start and succeed but if he doesn’t then that’s on the FO. They need to start being held accountable for wasting two hall of fame QB’s. Two rings is mind boggling with the two QB’s we’ve had in the last 30 years.

I don’t mean to give the impression that Love is the next Rodgers. All I am saying is that we will never know what he can be if we don’t play him, which is why I believe he should start, or at very least get significant snaps in our next 4 games.

The mess that the FO has dug us in is awful, which is why it will take a rebuild to fix all of it. We cannot go into 2023 in a win-now mode and expect to actually win; a rebuild is needed. If the FO does all the right moves, which I have toyed around with a bit in simulations, we could be contending as soon as 2024 if all goes according to plan (meaning Love pans out and we have a great 2023 draft with a multitude of high draft picks).

The Offensive line can be corrected. Tom, I think, if he adds some muscle, can become an effective starting LT, with Nijman at RT and Rasheed Walker and Caleb Jones as backups. Choosing Josh Myers over Creed Humphrey is one of the most inexcusable draft whiffs ever. Humphrey leads the NFL in pass block win rate while Myers has been just okay. Runyan has been good at RG, but Jenkins will take some time to get back to his Pre-injury self. If I were in charge, I would franchise-tag-and-trade him to an OL needy team, like the Steelers or Raiders, for a 2nd round pick and select a replacement in the draft. This will allow us more cap freedom in 2024 and beyond by not having to pay for a 16m contract each year, and get us good draft capital.

I agree that the FO needs to be held more accountable. Only 2 rings to show for 30 years of Rodgers and Favre is inexcusable (they may have had a shot in 2014 if it wasn’t for Brandon $&#*@*$ Bostick!)

Why?= 20 mil. and draft picks. Love salary will significantly increase, if he turns out to be 1/2 as good as Rodgers.
They can't over-pay him for sitting the bench. And do you have faith in the FO to make the right call.?
Next- If Love gets hurt. Who replaces him? They will draft a Qb this draft. Even if they keep Love. (Stroud and Young are not the only QBs to draft.) It's deep with good prospects.

1. It's nice to be able to fantasize about some magical formula to make the playoffs, but it ain't going to happen. 2. Just what if, they're planning on trading Love, and he plays lights out for the remainder of the season? Then you may actually have some trade value. If the plan is to keep Rodgers around, let him heal up, so he's ready for OTA's next year...

Who can afford his contract and no one is giving you decent draft picks for the contract as well. The obsession with love is kind of nuts considering the one time he played a full game he was straight terrible. Then last week he plays a prevent defense. The Chiefs game he still had Adams and did absolutely nothing and a better offensive line that game as well. I want him to play so we see if last week wasn’t a fluke. But if he does get the start and plays the same way as in the Chiefs game there is a problem with our front office evaluating talent. Till then we just wait and see what transpires and if he’s as talented as you think!

Rodgers’ contract is very affordable. If a team were to acquire him in 2023, they would only take on a 15.5m cap hit, and around a 31m cap hit in 2024. It gets higher after that, but I think a team could give us even a first-round pick in exchange for Rodgers if they were desperate enough. Take the Jets, for example. They have a loaded roster, one of the best in the NFL, but are being held back by ineptitude at the QB position. I have heard others say in this site that Jets fans really want to get Rodgers next year. Getting Rodgers would not only establish the Jets firmly as SB contenders, but it would also give Rodgers the best chance of winning another championship in the twilight years of his career. In addition, it is reasonable to think that Rodgers’ play will improve in 2023, when he is fully healthy (no thumb or ribs), he has a better O-line, and when he has one of the best supporting casts of the league, boasting stars at RB and an excellent trio of pass catchers. I think it would be in the best interest of both Rodgers and the Packers to trade him to the Jets.

It really is criminal that the coaching staff joe berry and his crew are absolutely the most pathetic group of teachers and scheme designers in the last decade in the entire NFL

This defense does have talent and especially Quay and finally they let Wyatt have a chance . If Quay walker had a average teacher he would be special .

This once again is on the head coach or which ever puppet master keeps this defensive staff together what a bunch of losers

For what it's worth, the one thing Barry is supposed to be actually good at, is developing inside linebackers.

Win is win. To late to insufficient...

Packers needed half and half of the 3rd Q to finaly start to play. We saw again quite a lot of inacurate throws from ACR. It must be due to his numerous injuries. Or bad route running from Packers receivers. On that PI calls in favor of Watson, ball was badly underthrown. Watson needed to stop and start to move back.

Regarding D. It is still disjoint unit. They continuosly playing of opponent WR waiting them around 1st down marker what Bears used heavily to move the chain. There was not a lot pressure on Fields, I suppose they were afraid of his running skills so try to keep him in the pocket and forcing him to throw.

ST unit was ok, there were games where they played better.

All together, after tie in Giants - Commanders game, already small chances for post season run diminish even more.

It will be interesting 2 weeks for us, fans.

Happy for the win. It’s was nice to see Tom and rest of the offensive line hold up. Receivers caught some balls. The defense improved in the second half.

Sorry, the D still sucks. Had the Bears call for Fields to run more often, the outcome MAY have been different. We are fortunate that Fields sucks as a passer.

Statistics don’t hide the fact our D is terrible and under utilized.

On Offense, anything long or the long back shoulder throws are not working. Why the H QB12 or MLF keeps calling it is a mystery. It was fortunate that GB got the D int penalty that set up our score IMO.

Please play Love. Now that you beat the Bears, let’s see what we have with him, and his sounding cast.

Go Pack

Thanks so much for the win...well ,the packers can not stop a running Qb....
Very frustrating,,I like Nixon returning kicks ,Just not 9 yards deep in the end zone... it's so hard to get a good replay. I don't know y MLF didn't challenge the dilion run.unless the bad referees blew it dead..
I thought they replaced the replacement Refs ?
Or do they just use them against us..
I'm looking forward to seeing ,Watson, Doubs, and Toure on the field at the same time.

I'm sure duh bares fans consider this a win too. They're obviously way better at tanking than we are.

When they pick that monster blue chip player right in front of us, I'll console myself with the fact we beat them today.

I didn't believe a Joe Barry led defense was capable of beating duh bares. Imagine my surprise when a couple of our guys actually made some plays today.
