David Bakhtiari Making Good Progress Post-ACL Injury

David Bakhtiari is making significant progess in his recovering from an ACL injury.

Green Bay Packers star offensive lineman David Bakhtiari tore his ACL during a late December practice, but he’s already doing individual work in front of the media at voluntary OTAs just five months later.

The All-Pro left tackle was seen on Wednesday doing rehab off to the side during team drills and looked damn good for a guy coming off of a significant knee injury. Obviously, Green Bay won’t Bakhtiari back before he’s ready, however, he does appear to be making great progress.

Head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed Wednesday that Bakhtiari is ahead of schedule in his recovery.

“He’s really working hard. I think he came back, and he’s in excellent shape. We’re just going to take it one day at a time,” LaFleur said Wednesday. “I think he’s a little bit ahead of schedule, but then again, there’s a long way to the start of the season. We’ll see where he’s at when it comes to that time.”

The Packers will need Bakhtiari sooner rather than later if they hope to have the number one scoring offense for the second year in a row. During Aaron Rodgers MVP run in 2020, he was sacked 20 times, which was his lowest total since 2017. A season in which he played in just seven games due to a broken collarbone. For a complete season, 20 sacks taken is the lowest total during Rodgers’ 13 years as the starting quarterback.

Bakhtiari plays a huge role in protecting Rodgers’ blindside-- a job he has held since 2013. Over the course of his career, he’s emerged into one of the best left tackles in the NFL. Right before his injury, Bakhtiari signed a four-year, $105.5 million contract extension making him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history at the time.

Last year, Bakhtiari missed four games with a back injury but later returned to an elite level. He is a three-time Pro Bowler and also earned his second first-team All-Pro selection in 2020. Unfortunately, right before the Packers were about to start their postseason run, he tore his ACL during a non-contact drill in practice.

Green Bay won their divisional-round matchup against the Los Angeles Rams but lost the NFC Championship to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rodgers faced a lot of pressure and was sacked five times without his franchise left tackle.

Once Bakhtiari is healed, he will return to his rightful spot at left tackle. Although you can’t count him out just yet, it would be a miracle for him to be ready for week one. If Bakhtiari were to play in week one, he would have healed in eight months for an injury that sometimes can take up to 12 months to recover from.

Interviewer speaking with #12.

I: Isn't it great to see Bakh's progress?. We're so excited for him and for the upcoming season.

#12: Who is Bakh?

I: Your buddy and blind side protector with the Packers.

#12: Who are the Packers?

I. That team in Green Bay where you were seen on TV saying that you loved the City, your teammates, and the fans there.

#12: Hmmm! Well, now, that is a curious mystery.

Conversation #2:

"Hi Aaron...Brian here. Say...no need to report next week. We have met your demands to be traded. We have traded you and Jordan Love to Jacksonville for Trevor Lawrence. Good luck to you now."

Dear Mark Murphy:

Based on a random sample, it appears 12 out of 14 Packers fans are supportive of Rodgers in his "protest or whatever it is" against the front office. So I guess your statement that it has caused divisiveness within the Packers fan base is accurate, but it may not be as supportive of the front office as you would hope.

Bakht has always impressed me as high effort work out warrior, always prepared for the battle. You don't go from an unheralded 4th rounder to one of the best LTs in the NFL without it.

I agree with many who think David's absence in the NFCCG cost the Packers a SB trip...and I think a Lombardi as they were better than the banged up OL Chiefs.

Love is gonna need this guy. If he can avoid tossing picks, who knows where this team can go.

Wes Hodkiewicz just released this tweet:

Adam Stenavich on Ben Braden: "I'm really excited about Ben and what's going to happen with him. I think he's really going to compete for a starting job at guard or tackle."

Love to hear he is doing well, but the author left out one important piece of information. The Packer medical staff is notoriously conservative with injuries and they will have to clear him before he plays. Game one would be a miracle and I suspect it will be more like game nine.

Game one will likely be too soon. Many players, regardless of position, have tried returning too soon following knee surgery. The GB medical staff should be conservative with his return. I'd rather see him come back 1-2 games too late instead of 3-4 games too soon and injure the other knee.

Trope alert: Important player who was injured last year “is way ahead of schedule and feeling great.” We’ll hear next year at this time that Bakh “feels 100% better than he did a year ago. He never really was healthy in 2021.”

Yawn. He might play early in the year. I hope he does. The OL will be much better with even a 70% back Bakh. But he won’t be anywhere near the all-pro we know until 2022.

Very possible. Sometimes it happens: Bulaga came back much faster than expected, especially for his size and position.

So apparently the Packers do have a LT. I never would have guessed it from looking at the pre-draft discussion.

Excellent news. Continue to improve and do well DB. The team needs your leadership and skills. And the fans surely miss watching you play. I know I do. And while I'm on here posting.... what's up with all these annoying ads?
