Cory's Corner: Packers Defense Please Stand Up
The Packers are blessed with an abundance of talent on defense. They need to come through on Sunday to lift up an offense that will be starting backup quarterback Malik Willis.

Now is the time.
Ever since the Packers hired former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley to be their defensive coordinator on Jan. 31, people have been wondering how long it would take before the defense would grow some teeth.
The Packers have seven first round picks in Rashan Gary, Kenny Clark, Quay Walker, Jaire Alexander, Eric Stokes, Devonte Wyatt and Lukas Van Ness. They also have Javon Bullard, Edgerrin Cooper, Xavier McKinney and Preston Smith who were taken in the second round.
The defense is dripping with talent. For so long, the offensive side of the ball has carried this team. From Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love’s 32 touchdown passes in his first season as a starter.
Now that Malik Willis has been called into duty, it’s pretty obvious to think that the offense will stumble. The offense is going to run like a baby giraffe at first. It will look clunky and probably even frustrating.
But you cannot have Alexander and Walker be among the teams worst tacklers. The Packers had 15 quarterback hurries last week and were led by Clark. But even the 28-year-old Clark was getting pushed off the ball in Brazil. The only time that usually happens is when he’s facing a double team.
Wyatt and Gary were the only other Packers to have more than one quarterback hurry. That’s not good enough. Green Bay has to make Anthony Richardson look confused and careless.
And the best way to do that is by giving consistent pressure. This team did a solid job of stopping the run on first and second down, but missed tackling led to a litany of big plays for the Eagles.
But that’s what we knew coming into this season right? Instead of dying the death of a million cuts and playing six yards off the receiver on third-and-4, the Packers need to turn up the heat and force the issue.
That means that there is a greater chance for big plays from the opposing offense. But it also means that the defense can force a sack, turnover or a three-and-out.
Richardson is in his second season and was a miserable 9-for-19 passing last week vs. division rival Houston in Week 1. He is a dynamic athlete with a howitzer for an arm, but his accuracy is what dreams are made of on the defensive side of the ball.
Force the issue. Make Richardson throw off-platform and force him make bad decisions.
The Packers have all the ingredients on defense. Now is the time for Hafley to put his chef’s hat on and make a masterpiece.

The tag line made me laugh after last week. This game we hopefully do see our players able to keep their footing.
With any new D there are always struggles getting the scheme and players bedded down. Hafley is also a novice OC at the NFL level and that isn’t the same as college. He too will have a learning curve over and above the settling in by his players. That always suggested that the D will take time.
It will be interesting to see how the tackling looks on firm ground and if the footing issues might have affected the calling against a similar QB type or if Hafley learned and adapts.
I’m curious to see if Cooper sees more action, Williams gets on the field and in what role and whether Enagbare sees as much. I do think that the interior DL needs to be more impactful pushing the pocket in this one.

"The tag line made me laugh after last week." Me too...conjured up visions of "My Cousin Vinny" slipping and flopping in the wet Georgia clay.
It seems Cooper is healed and ready to play now... and he needs to. Just a different speed diagnosing and flying to the ball. Knew he was fast, but it is his quickness that stands out to me. McDuffie gives it his all, but Cooper is just better...and synergistic a better fit for what Hafley wants to do.
And I think that fit will find ways to include Williams. He is impossible not to notice on field. He flys to the ball carrier or the ball in the air. Rock solid tackler.
As far as his Williams' role, given Richardson relies on his legs even more than Hurts, would be interesting to see him in the base as a hybrid S/LB alongside Walker and Cooper. Wilson is ok, but Williams tackles as well and gives far more range.

It’s also possible that they use Hopper in a spy role. Theres a lot of competition in that area of that field that I think will see young talent start to break through in the coming weeks. Hafley is seemingly hugely enamored with Nixon’s fit for his version of the slot role and his play last week. It will be interesting to see where the damn bursts and how.

I am fine with Nixon, neither a booster nor a denigrator, but if we want to play Williams, the slot role is one of the three obvious spots to rotate in a rookie S. I was simply pointing out that Hafley seems particularly thrilled with Nixon and has done since he arrived. If neither McKinney nor Nixon come off in sub packages, then Williams and Bullard can only trade snaps with each other.

Id like to see more pressure from the line. I thought Arron Mosby showed some good enough things off the edge. Id also like to see more Wooden and Brooks. They need to get more middle pressure and not get taken off the line as that stresses the LBs too much and makes things fall apart. If VanNess doesn’t get pressure off the edge consistently then they should just move him to one of the will, Mike or sam spots. I also hope they had a talk with Quay Walker to quit overshooting his gaps and running past QBs and RBs.

Fans, as they tend to do, rendered their verdict on Hafley before all the evidence was presented.
An assumption was made this would be an aggressive, meat-eating defense, but it's not shown any carnivorous leaning.
Yet.

They did feast on turnovers. Had the Offense taken better advantage of those and won the game, far different narratives would exist this fine Saturday.

It’s hard to be super aggressive if your prime focus is contain. I can’t fault that given what Hurts legs did to Barry and has done to other teams. Richardson is a very similar proposition except less good at playing from the pocket at this point. It’s hard to see a dramatic change in priorities on Sunday therefore.
More than anything I want a DC who adapts to the opponent. Yes, I very much prefer an aggressive D personally, but I want that tempered by context. We saw the more aggressive D/B approach. We also saw some big errors in coverage and assignment. Hopefully those will subside, but I doubt we see too much blitzing this week, but I’m hopeful it will come when we face more conventional QBs more accomplished in the pocket and less talented with their feet.

I think this is right on the mark. The Packers were clearly trying to frustrate Hurts' running.
Indy's OL is not in the same category as Philly's, and their pass catchers aren't in the same tier as Brown and Smith, so I suspect squeezing the pocket should generate more pressure--but they don't want a 240 lb, 4.4 QB running free in the open field.

You don't win many games where the opponent has 34.

You don’t win many games against elite offenses if that’s your mind set. There aren’t many elite offenses and they are typically the teams you have to beat to win in the end. This D is still in nuts novitiate phase. It has to get better, but even the best D’s will have tough days against the elite teams. In my view, the Eagles O is elite at this point. Their D is not as good, but it was good enough against us even with their offensive errors early in the game.

OK, Coldworld. Tell me. How many games does the losing team have 34?
I can tell you this: Most of the time, if you score 30 or more points, you win. Similarly, if you give up 30 or more, you lose. Occasionally, there are shootouts where both teams go over 30. But that's a very small percentage.
How many of those playoff games last year featured a losing team with 34 points? None, that's how many.
23/24 is a tipping point in the NFL. Teams that score 24 or more generally win. Teams that don't score 24 generally lose. If you want to win in the NFL, even against an elite offense, you can't just give up 34 points and expect to win.
And really, Coldworld, I could care less about who we might meet in the playoffs, assuming we get there. I'm concerned about beating Indianapolis this weekend, and if we give up 34, we probably are going to be 0-2 to start the season.

Agreed. That's a nebulous thing. You can only play to give yourself the most favorable positioning you can.

We met them last week. Indeed I presume that’s why he’s referencing 34 points. It doesn’t matter when you meet them, just how many elite Os you do meet and, obviously more when it is a one-and-done game.
If this D and Hafley’s calling of it doesn’t improve between now and November, regardless of how indicative its debut game was, then I will be shocked, simply on prior system and coordinator change experience (exacerbated perhaps now by the non-use of preseason). I could still see that O scoring 34+ on better Ds (ours or another team) later this year. I can see them giving up more to a better O on the day too.

How many elite O's,,,,
That's going to depend on the definition. Here's mine: Bell curve, 32 teams, 16 are average-ish, 8 are below average and 8 are above. Let's say 4 teams are elite. That's only going to be 2 or 3 in each conference.
So, in a 17 game season, how many elite offenses are the Packers going to encounter? In the playoffs, how many? Not so many.
I suspect other teams are going to hold the Eagles to less than 34 this season. We could have held them to 27 if we hadn't foolishly given up the long TD on the Brown catch to start the second half. At the end of the day, this was a one play game, and that was the play.

You don't qin many games where the field causes 5-7 missed tackles
You don't qin many games were there are 5-7 major incorrect calls or non calls that go against your defense and gift the opponent 14-17 points.
You don't qin many games when your best players are not on the field enough (Cooper, Hooper, Evan, LVN, etc).
You don't qin many games if you drop 2 picks and slip to miss another one that cost 2 TD's given up and a potential pick six.
So, a better field, better officiating, improving the DB's hands, putting in the better players more often makes this an elite defense.

New defensive coordinator gave up 34 points in first endeavor. Nothing new so far. Same old, same old. Maybe the Packers are not " blessed with an abundance of talent on defense. "

That’s exactly it. Some of these guys are OK, some of them are just guys, and only a few have fire. They obviously need a new draft strategy for their defensive picks.

I have no idea what Hafleys D background is. If its not much my assumption, they gave him Barrys game plan and said tweek it.
A four man rush only works when you also have vesitile linebackers to cover outs and fill holes. If not you send the house like Barry.

The Packers need to play with a lead and make the Colts offense one dimensional. Then the defense can get after Richardson and force mistakes and hopefully turnovers. The defense gave the Packers a good chance to build a lead against the Eagles early which could have made them one dimensional and could have taken Barkley out of the game to some degree at least. However the offense didn't get it done and the Packers paid the price. The Packers also helped to beat themselves with penalties, mental errors, poor OL play and dropped passes.
This week needs to be different. The OL needs to play solidly and the defense needs to make tackles and get off the field. Thanks, Since '61

When I look at the stats for Colts last game, one would surmise and easy win for Houston except their inability to score TDs in the red zone. This could present a big problem as we struggled with that last game.

Long overdue for our D to step up and win one but I’ll believe it when I see it. Love or no Love, this is still winnable. Just look at what Chicago and Pittsburgh accomplished with their defenses. GPG!

We have a new D coordinator so, of course, it's going to take him some time to learn the NFL. Hopefully, sooner than later. But again, these starters saw very little preseason action. Accordingly, I'm not surprised that their tackling was poor. Smith looked invisible on the D line. Pass rush must be better. LBs need to be more engaged.

I know what I'm doing if I'm the Colts: Feed Jonathan Taylor. Last week he had 16 carries for 48 yards--a 3.0 yard per carry average. Is he going to have two games in a row like that, especially when the second one is against the Packers? I'm looking for Colts to run it right down our throats. I hope the Packers are somehow able to break character and actually stop the run. I'm doubtful that they will be able to do it.

They managed the running QB Hurts pretty well, but Barkley had 24 carries for 109 yards and 2 TDs. That's not good enough, especially when the Eagles had a 7-minute drive at the end that bled the clock to almost nothing.

The more pressure you put on a young Defense.
The more they'll cave in.
We were at this point with Barry.
When you replace 25% of the players.
You must resort to Baby steps.
Just stop the pressure.
Your panic won't do anybody any good.
Support what they do.
It's too early to condemn.

Get the young rookies some playing time early and often. By the end of the season their progression is going to be off the charts. This is one of the reasons Y GB qent from terrible to elite from the first severel qeeks to the last 5 qeeks of the season last year.
Adjustments to improve the team:
1.) Cooper and eventually Hooper in for Mcduffie and Eric.
2.) Cooper the MLB and Quay the OLB
3.) JA should play press man coverage only. He had 2 pass deflections (one should've been an int but not PI called on AJ. The deep pass JA in soft coverage and peeping in the backfield. All other completions on him came in soft coverage. Stokes should be on the big fast superhuman receivers and not JA.
4.) One deep safety = auto TD if the CB is beaten unless you have an elite S back there. McKinney only should be in one deep and nobody else.
5.) Evan at Deep safety and Bullard at box safety or occasional N CB.
6.) More Wooden and Devonte over Clark and Slayton at interior DL.
7.) Blitz six on occasion in cover 1 vs dual threat QB's. Especially vs unproven QB's like Hurts and like Richardson vs the blitz. Every DB needs to be in press man if they do this to prevent the little check doqns.
8.) Improve DB hands/reaction time for int's.
9.) More Ballentine/Valentine if the other CB's have an off day.
10.) I'd say improve tackling but it's tough to read since they've had no preseason and the worst field conditions in NFL history.
11.) Cut the penalties in half as they had 10 I believe and many that resulted in Eagles points and extended drives on 3rd or 4th down plays..
12.) Morgan RG, Jenkins C, Ryan LG.
13.) Lloyd as a potential future upgrade over Emanuel but Emanuel has been fantastic it's just Lloyd has a higher ceiling.
I believe overall GB gifted the Eagles 24 points on penalties (or no calls), field conditions and mistakes (leaving their gap assignment). I seen nothing that showed me GB was just flat out getting beat in the one on one's (u can say JA, but the one long one he got caught peeping and the short ones he had him dead to rights but slipped on the field.
14.) Maybe Bullard, Mckinney and Evan can all be on the field at the same time in an obvious passing down.
15.) LVN over Smith. LVN had the best PFF score of the entire DL but needs more snaps and should be the eventual starter over smith.
16.) Interior DL getting double teamed to death. They need to make the proper adjustments to this.
17.) Jeff needs to make better in game adjustments. I was very disappointed in his first game. They did a great job stopping Hurts from running and Barkley for the most part outside of KC getting blocked in the back and Eric losing gap containment on the 34 yd run.
18.) MLF needs to utilize the Love shove and FB/HB dives 2 yds behind LOS instead of delayed handoffs 10 yds behind LOS on short down yardage situations.

Seems to me the defense would be better off to eventually bench all the players who played under Pettine and Barry, they tackled poorly again, were pushed off the ball and gave the game away. A fresh start is what's needed, it's the same ole same ole with these guys. Put the guys in who are hungry to play, you can start with Valentine and Williams and bench Ja and Quay. Sounds drastic but if the D puts up another 34 points on the board, somethings gotta give.
