Cory's Corner: Keep It Simple
How Jordan Love will get his groove back.

Well, here we are.
The Packers are the No. 7 seed for the third straight season. Of the three years, the Packers in 2025 rank the worst in offensive points and yards.
In 2023, the Packers closed the regular season on a three-game winning streak before blowing out the Cowboys 48-32 in Dallas in the NFC Wild Card. They then went to San Francisco and lost 24-21, despite Jordan Love throwing a pair of picks.
In 2024, they finished the season on a two-game losing skid at Minnesota and vs. Chicago. Both were two point losses, but they had two turnovers and seven penalties in a 24-22 loss to the Bears. They then followed that by looking terrible at Philadelphia in the NFC Wild Card. They lost 22-10 as the Packers committed four turnovers and Love didn’t have a touchdown pass.
This year, the Packers limped to the end of the regular season on a four-game losing streak and that included losing by more than 10 points twice. In those games, the Packers have committed five turnovers and allowed an average of 171 rushing yards a game.
Clearly, Packers coach Matt LaFleur is not a student of history. It’s not just that the Packers’ last win in the postseason was on the heels of a regular season winning streak. Love’s last touchdown pass came on Dec. 14 and his last multiple touchdown game was on Dec. 7.
I’m not saying that Love can’t get it done, because he has proven that he is more than capable this year. He has four games with at least three touchdown passes and his passer rating has been over 120 four times.
The biggest problem I see will come in the form of rhythm and timing. And we will see it right away. If Love cannot complete the 8-yard hitch, his confidence for the deep ball will likely be tough to find.
And to make matters worse, with right tackle Zach Tom listed as a game time decision, that could make Love’s time in the pocket even tighter than usual. Which means that he will not have a lot of time to get comfortable and set his feet. His feet are usually a tangled mess, even a clean pocket.
So we’ve seen this movie before and the ending has been rotten. The only way to have an alternate ending is to score right away. Put pressure on the Bears. Make them think they have to pass to stay in the game. (When in fact, they don’t.)
LaFleur needs to just keep it simple. Make the throws quick and easy early on. Crossers, screens and curls sound like a great first series diet. Let Love get his groove back slowly and easily. There’s no need to risk it with a deep ball right away unless he’s got a receiver open by at least five yards.
I want Love completing all the layups so he has a chance at completing the three-pointers.

Tonight's the chance for Hafley's much heralded defense to bear their weight and produce a dominant performance which alters the course and outcome of the game.
For all of the hubbub surrounding Hafley, his unit has not been a game changer. For the Packers to win, his unit must become what apparently the NFL world thinks they are.

Who are these people who think the Packers have a great defense? It was very good before Micah Parsons went down, and everyone knows it has not been good since then.

January 10, 2026 at 12:14 pm
And yet the Bears struggled against it post Parsons as well for all but a couple of minutes. Had we not gone 0 for 5 in the red zone with a turnover as well, the D would have done just fine. Even with a series of howlers, what’s cost us against Chicago—a bad defense—is our inability to score TDs from the red zone in both games.

For most of the season, the defense was in the top 10.
For the majority of the season, they gave up less than 20 points a game.
Even after a 4 game losing streak, this team's defensive scoring is ranked 8th in the NFL.
For what Hafley has to work with, no Wyatt, no K. Clark, Gary's 9 week leave of absence.
Under achieving corners.
A disappointing 13th pick LVN.
1 1/2 sacks, 0 forced fumbles
Ranked 80th in pressures
I'm sorry, but if you're the 13th pick in the draft, and that's what you offer in your 3rd season, you are a bust.
Yea...i'll say it, no one else will.
I know, i know, he was injured, i give no f.
Will Gute (if he's still around) designate LVN his 5th year option?
Highly doubt it.

Disappointing overall for sure, but there's still hope. He's coming off his best game as a pro vs. the Ravens. I saw a pretty impressive string of Van Ness highlights in that game over on acmepacking.com. This video by Larry McCarren does not show all of them, but it gets the point across:

The thing about highlights, it doesn't tell the whole story.
Almost every player has highlights.
College players have highlight video's before a draft that a lot of people view (not me).
When people watch someone's highlight video, they all look like 1st round picks.
They might isolate 7-10 plays, out of hundreds, or a thousand.
I just think, basing someone on highlight video's, is fools gold.
Not saying McCarren is a fool.
But he's paid by the Packers to drink (guzzle) the Packer kool aid, and his work show's it.
I can't listen to that guy at all.
I wonder why players don't have a lowlight video.
I guess because that would make them look like a 7th round pick, or an UDFA.
There is far more to a player....than his highlight video.

Van Ness has been a solid run player when he’s been healthy. He’s only appeared in 8 games and in not all of those was he really healthy. Nevertheless, he’s managed only 1.5 sacks. Even if you only count 6 true games, that’s 0.4 sacks a game, less than Gary even after a total half season blank.
Van Ness is a nice 3rd DE/situational starter in run heavy games at this point if judged by performance. That’s it. In reality, it’s plausible that the 2 conventional DEs most likely to sack the QB absent Parsons are Cox and Sorrell. They have been largely afterthoughts and sacks have largely been absent without them. No highlights change that.

"Van Ness is a nice 3rd DE/situational starter in run heavy games"
Yes, and this is probably one of those games. The Packers probably need to be more concerned about the Bears rushing attack than their passing. Same deal with Gary. No, he can't get to the QB for crap, and he certainly can't run Williams down when he gets out of the pocket. But Gary has always been a good player when it comes to stopping the run.
Both players may be disappointments overall, but if Monongai (or whatever the h3\\ his name is) and Swift rush for 6.5 yards per carry, nothing else is going to matter. And Johnson loves the run.

I'm not talking about highlights taken out of thousands of plays, or even hundreds. I'm talking about one game, in which he played 47 snaps. I'm not even disagreeing with you that Van Ness has been a disappointment. I'm just saying he had one good game. I did not watch every play, but McCarren and the writer on acmepackingcompany both said Van Ness had a very good game overall. I didn't see him getting embarrassed out there like some of our other defenders were.

Back in the Ice Bowl, during that legendary final drive of 68 yards for the victory, a little-known running back named Chuck Mercein, acquired in midseason without fanfare, gained half of them.
It's also worth noting that the Packers offense was reeling with a total of minus-9 yards in the second half up until that final drive, which is a big part of the reason that it's so legendary.
The Packers didn't quit amidst bitterly cold adversity.

So much to unpack here:
1. "They then went to San Francisco and lost 24-21, despite Jordan Love throwing a pair of picks." Please look up the meaning of "despite" in a dictionary.
2. "Clearly, Packers coach Matt LaFleur is not a student of history." Or maybe he IS a student of history because he remembers Christian Watson blowing out his knee in an almost meaningless game to end last season, and his battered team then getting thumped by the Eagles in the playoffs. It is a matter of opinion whether the Packers should've tried to beat the Vikings last week, but LaFleur's reason for treating it like a preseason game made sense. I think most people are in agreement on this.
3. "If Love cannot complete the 8-yard hitch, his confidence for the deep ball will likely be tough to find." Not sure what this is based on. If you get a chance to hit a deep throw early, you take it. Love does not need to be babied by his play-caller.
4. "His feet are usually a tangled mess, even [in] a clean pocket." His footwork is a little unconventional, just like Aaron Rodgers' footwork, but it works for him.
Weird to read a game day article that is dripping with condescension toward Jordan Love. Things to worry about are the defense (especially the run defense) and the offensive line, not our QB, who is one of the best in the league.

You guys love to go after Love and Lafleur about their failings which there are some but the big issues are that Gute isn't capable of finding a consistent OL and dominant DTs. Today it is Love, the 6th year pro, 3 year starter, needs to have the playbook distilled down to simple plays, short passes, and lots of "KISS". To me, Green Bay has underperformed most of the season. The center snap that hit the face mask of the QB in the Chicago game will be forever in NFL bloopers. Yet what Cory is suggesting is what many of us have been yelling for the team to do.
They aren't a running team. Sorry, but the line isn't built for that yet so lean on the pass because the receivers are where the playmaker reside. It's like the TE situation...everyone here posted to get Kraft more involved with the offense. Once they did...it took off. Now that he's hurt it seems that there's a huge disconnect on the short passing game. So they run more which isn't that effective.
Anyway, I hope they play lights out and run the table. Miracles happen all the time look at Indiana in the Championship...who ever thought that would happen.

I couldn't agree more with Cory here. At least to start the game until Jordan KNOWS himself he's got his stuff. LaFleur doesn't need to get cute. He's got Reed back and Watson healthy. He's got a healthier Josh Jacobs to lean on too. As we say in AA...KISS...Keep It Simple Stupid.

To keep those long drives going -- and they are indeed a thing of beauty, a magnificent march -- the Packers may have to convert a couple of fourth downs during this game.
This is where LaFleur has to be at his finest as an offensive creator, and the Packers have to execute with discipline and precision.
***
If it's fourth and less than 5 yards near mid-field or closer, I'd go for it almost every time.
However, I'd be inclined to kick field goals in most fourth-down situations. Take the points.
No two-point conversion attempts until at least the fourth quarter.
These are the kind of decisions that will be a big part of evaluating LaFleur.
Please, make them based not mainly on analytics, but on human judgment regarding the situation on the field.

A recent book that may be of interest to those associated with AA is titled "Father Ed," by Dawn Eden Goldstein.
As I understand it, Father Ed Dowling was instrumental in the recovery of Bill W. and in the formation of AA.
It seems to me the Twelve Steps are very Catholic.
For all of us, life truly begins when we surrender our lives to the God of love and mercy and strength.
Then we can tackle whatever lies ahead in peace, just doing our best.
A quote from Lombardi for the big game tonight: "The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have."

Swisch
January 10, 2026 at 05:18 pm
I didn't mean to say that one has to be a Catholic to benefit from AA; rather, that there is much in AA that is in accord with Catholicism.
In Catholicism, the "higher power" is understood more specifically as the God of love who became one of us, to live for us and to die for us.
There are many people of good will who may be able to accept a higher power but are not ready to consider the nature of that higher power.
I believe in a God who respects the journey of each one of us, who doesn't rush us, who wants us to seek the truth as best we can at the pace that is best for us.
This God is firm, but gentle and kindly -- and always wants what is best for us, now and forever.
P.S. I like to think that this God even cares about something as little as my prayer for the Packers to win tonight. My prayer may not push the Packers over the top, but I like to think God takes it into consideration; and that whatever happens on the field, God will use this prayer for the good of all.
My best to all who may read this, as well-meaning to all.

The Lions had some success running double crossers and then passing to the side the receivers vacated. After giving up 8 explosives and over 430 yards the Packers might be able to catch the defenders guarding the crossers peeking. I'd try running a double crosser with Reed and Golden and throw it their way, it might generate some easy YAC.
The Lions also had some success running clearouts with 3 verts and then throwing to Gibbs behind them.

Look, there’s nothing wrong with the points you make, but there’s only one thing we need to do better on offense: win in the red zone.
We have been able to move the ball at will on the ground and in the air against the Bears and, if we can’t against that D, we deserve to go home. LaFleur needs to step up his red zone calling and we need to then execute and cut out the indiscipline.
On D we need to get off the damn field. That means, containing and spying Williams and not being pushed back on the IDL. The Bears runners aren’t Henry.
We are good at the outside the tackles speed run D. We need to be stouter (heavier) inside (a yard less per carry is big) and have a spy on Williams and more aggressive in the backend in shifting at S once he bolts. Let him throw across his body if he wants to, but shut down the sideline outlet.
We’ve played the Bears twice, we know these things, it’s not guesswork. Williams traits are sufficiently ingrained they can’t be completely masked. The Bears have tried to run on us before and not done so particularly effectively. We have run more effectively on them actually.
Fix the red zone, because ultimately that’s set us up for failure twice, (once averted) despite otherwise dominating on both occasions.

"That means, containing and spying Williams and not being pushed back on the IDL....shut down the sideline outlet."
Part of what the Lions did was when the Bears rolled out Williams or when he broke contain, they did a great job of being disciplined in coverage and of stringing out Williams so he had nowhere to turn upfield and had to throw balls into coverage or away.
I'm hoping that playing heavies against MN gave Hafley the notion that even when a team is going to try to run on you a lot, you can sub against it. As you say, their runners aren't Derrick Henry, and they don't have a 300 lb fullback lead blocking, either.
"The Bears runners aren’t Henry."
The Ravens didn't do anything fancy. They didn't have to. Johnson will do a pretty good job of getting Swift, in particular, the ball in space. They'll play more misdirection and crash down on the ends than the Ravens did, too.
"The Bears have tried to run on us before and not done so particularly effectively."
Except a couple drives in the second half of the first meeting, the Packers have contained the Bears' run game. Johnson can't help himself. He's going to throw the ball if he's not gashing on the ground.

It is okay to feel as tense as a country fence. May I suggest...dont fight the feeling, rather...lean into it.
We will be fine. Just hope we hang onto the football like a big-boned lil feller hangs onto the last chocolate-covered pretzel.
You barkeep, please pass down another Leinies, a pickled egg and another blind Robin. Oh, and please crank up the jukebox when I press E2.

Packer media spends an enormous amount of energy propping up Gutekunst's early-round mistakes-LVN, Gary, Morgan, Q Walker, Savage, Stokes, Myers, et al. Fans are not (have not) really been allowed to critique these players without enormous blow-back. LVN is not and has never played up to his Draft status-same with the others mentioned.

LVN has a statue? Are they going to put it out front with Vince and Curly?
I certainly did not envision that when they drafted him.

Receivers will need much more than a 5 yard advantage for a Love thrown deep ball. All Loves deep balls hang and force the receivers to slow up or even come back giving the defenders time to catch up. I’ve seen Love throw some amazing passes but the deep ball is not one of them. This part of the packer offense is recognized to not be a threat. Willis is much better in this regard and along with his running ability, likely why he has become such a fan phenomenon. Note how he was so effective in the deep strikes this season. Love is our QB, but this part of his game needs to be fixed for the pack to be a consistent, effective offense by taking full advantage of our receiver talent.

Last week the Bears lost to the Lions at home, a game they very much wanted to win. Tonight they will lose to the Packers with all of our disappointing draft picks and rollercoaster ride QB. We don't have to be perfect, we just have to win.

Snow and rain should be cleared out by early afternoon with some clearing skies later. Windy with some strong wind gusts.
Will look a lot like the game from a couple weeks ago, but probably not quite as windy.

Now it's turning out there's some back-side snow showers on the way and that there will be some during the game....so I have about the same accuracy as your average meteorologist.

I agree. Use the ground game and a short passing game to get it done. Blustery and windy conditions with light snow are in the forecast, so this approach could serve us well.

If it's third-and-5 yards, throw to the guy who's open for 6 yards.
If it's third-and-11, throw to the guy who's open for 12.
No need for the deep shots in such situations -- unless as Cory writes, the guy is wide open.
Move the chains.

A deep shot now and then is a good thing, however.
A couple of quick scores would be most welcome.
Plus, the deep shots keep the defense honest.
Here's an idea: On third-and-20 or more yards, roll out right and throw deep, forty yards or so. Even if the receiver is covered, he might make a play or draw a pass-interference penalty. In this case, even an interception is really no worse than a punt. Have the other receivers trail the route to make the tackle if there is an interception.

Time to put the four-game losing streak in the rearview mirror; time to start a four-game winning streak.

I think the Packers win, and win easily, because they have the better roster. Unfortunately, that won’t change the more depressing news I read this morning: LaFleur isn’t coaching for his job and may be rewarded with an extension, whether they win or not. So we can all look forward to three or four more years of the same vacant postgame whiny soliloquy—“It’s on me, I have to be better”—delivered by a coach who never is.

If I were Policy, I would make a stipulation in his renewal that he fire Steno, Butkis and RB and bring in fresh, outside of GB, quality assistants (real assistants with names) who can truly help him manage practice's, game planning and in game management. This current band of misfits he has under him now will only hasten the Packers decline. We should be okay with Gute for the next two years since he doesn't have any first round picks to mess up now. But if MLF is extended and he keeps everything the same, especially if Hafley leaves town, we will all be on here bickering if 7 seeds or worse are what we want in GB for the next 3-4 years.

Fans are allowed to root for teams with better GM'coaches-7 -8 years of 'Groundhog Day' is sufficient proof.

crazypackfan. I suggest you read the Justis Mosqueda chat with Andy Herman on paying the coaches. It might tilt your perspective on how the decisions are made regarding the coaches under LaFleur.
LaFleur may well be salary-limited on who he can choose to work under him (though I'd look to replace Butkus especially, with someone else - and take a fresh roll of the dice).

Jordan Riley offered physicality and experience on the DL for GB the last time they played against the Bears, they have replaced him with J Ford ex packer and a downgrade. After scouting GB vs the Ravens the Bears will repeatedly attach the Middle of GB defense front with Monangai ( wouldn't you ) There's talk of GB defense and Hafley having a comeback game against the Vikings last week but remember the Vikings were headed to the golf course after that game anyway. My feeling is this will be a tougher match-up than the last. The Packers OF line must perform and our off tackles stay healthy and protect Love, we must avoid panic throws, turn overs, and of course injuries...

"After scouting GB vs the Ravens the Bears will repeatedly attach the Middle of GB defense front with Monangai "
I'm going to disagree with you in that the Bears are plenty familiar with the Packers and that it seems unlikely that the Ravens showed them or the Vikings anything new. Ask the Lions how much the Vikings were playing for the golf course. They might try to attack the Packers up the gut, but they aren't really a power running team. Riley and Brinson both played over 30% of the snaps against the Bears last time and the Packers contained their run game; I'm expecting the Packers will play either Stackhouse or Ford in the Riley role.
The Bears are also very familiar with Ford, but remember that Jordon Riley was plucked off the Giants' PS and wasn't a world-beater.

Good points Dobber, Bears not a power running team yes but to Monangia looks like a tough in between the tackles runner ... Our weeks rest and preparation should be advantageous. Packers are overdue for a clean/error free game

If we don't turn it over, we'll win.
If we have one turnover, we have a 50/50 chance of winning.
If we have two or more turnovers, our season will end .
Although a missed FG, or a failed 4th down, are not official turnovers, they have the same effect. Your opponent takes over possession. It's worse than a punt, which at least gives you yards in exchange for possession.

CoryJenner John:
"And to make matters worse, with right tackle Zach Tom listed as a game time decision, that could make Love’s time in the pocket even tighter than usual.
I want Love completing all the layups so he has a chance at completing the three-pointers."
Cory is spot on!!
Cory, sees that all but the Gutey Propagandists, the Rodgers Haters, and the Jordan Love bitter enders see.
