Cory's Corner: Jordan Love Leaves No Doubt

The 26th overall pick in 2020 is looking like a top 10 quarterback. Sounds crazy when he was sitting for three years, but patience is paying off in Green Bay.

You are allowed to continue to doubt — at your own peril.

I didn’t know what to expect from Jordan Love this season. Remember, he came into this season with one start and 80 pass attempts in two seasons. And that doesn’t even count his true rookie season of 2020 when he didn’t even suit up for a single game.

Yet there he was on Sunday night, carving up the Vikings defense as the Packers kept their playoff hopes alive with a 33-10 win in Minneapolis. Even a shirtless Kirk Cousins that lathered up the U.S. Bank Stadium crowd by blowing the annoying Gjallarhorn with his son couldn’t get in the way of Love’s greatness.

Love was absolutely sensational by going 24 of 33 for 256 yards and three touchdowns. He put up a passer rating of 125.3 — the third straight game he has tallied a rating over 109. He now has nine games where he has eclipsed the 100 passer rating and he now has 30 touchdowns and 11 picks in his first season as a starter.

“Everybody was out there executing,” said Love, who accounted for all of the Packers' four touchdowns. “We were moving the ball, getting into a rhythm. I was trying to get the ball out of my hands quick, get it to the playmakers.”

The thing that really has surprised me about Love is how he is able to keep his cool when things are falling apart around him. On the 33-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Reed in the first quarter to give the Packers a 10-0 lead, Love’s feet were actually off the ground when he threw it and it dropped perfectly in Reed’s waiting arms in stride in the end zone. The comparisons are huge, but Love’s crazy footwork and unreal arm angles are a spitting image of Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

“I can’t say enough great things about him,” said Packers coach Matt LaFleur, who is trying to get the Packers to the playoffs for the fourth time in five seasons. “Just his ability to hang in there versus some tough looks. Drifting away from pressure. Putting the ball in play. Allowing his guys to go make plays. I think he’s playing at an incredibly high level. Super happy for him because he’s put in a ton of work to get to this point.”

The Packers have been criticized loudly for making a first round pick sit three years before giving him his starting chance. But Green Bay is proving that they do in fact know how to handle quarterbacks. Even with all of the upgraded high school and college coaching, there are young NFL players that just aren’t ready to play a big role.

Love is 10th in the league in yards (3,843), third in touchdowns behind Dak Prescott (32) and Brock Purdy (31) and 10th in QBR (61.5). These numbers will springboard him into the MVP conversation at the start of the season next year.

We’ve seen the Packers win with Love but on Sunday, we saw the Packers win because of Love. The rest of the NFC North just shrieked in horror knowing that they will have to deal with him for at least two games a year. He’s under contract in 2024 with a miniscule cap hit of $7.7 million. The Bears have been around for 104 years, but they have never had a quarterback throw for Love’s yards or touchdowns.

Love is playing like a top 10 quarterback and he’s got the cheapest wide receivers, cheapest tight ends, a $40.3 million dead cap hit thanks to Rodgers and only 10 games played from his top running back.

So question Love if you must, but you’d be wrong. He’s having a great season.

At the start of the season many of us thought the playoffs was a possibility but getting a good evaluation of Love and these other youngsters was job ONE...The playoffs, hey great but IF the Packers were to make the playoffs on 2023, most of thought it would have been because of the defense and running game was humming. Fast forward to week 18 and it's anything but the defense and other than the last two weeks the running game.

Love has been better than I would have ever imagined. Just watching him the last several weeks playing WITHOUT many of his "preferred starters" has sold me. The thing is I think he's just scratching the surface. Both him and the TEs and WRs on this team are just scratching the surface. As exciting as the playoffs sounds, the POSSIBILITIES of who and what this offense can become in 2024 and beyond is what has me so stoked.

Hey, if they make the playoffs great. They sacrifice a few spots in the draft BUT gain very, VERY, valuable experience. IF somehow the Bears were to win on Sunday at Lambeau so be it. I'll be a little bummed for the organization but looking forward who cares. The Packers HAVE their next great QB already in place. AND a shitload of skill position players who are only going to get better.

Life is Good as a Packers Fan and it's only getting better!

Seasons change and so do players.
As Long as MLF is his coach. Fine.
Right now Love is willing.
He's essential to the organization, both on and off the field.

The game is slowing down for Love and he and the offense are peaking at the right time. Don't underestimate the return of Aaron Jones as a difference maker for this offense and for the strides Love has made the last 2 games. With a win over the Bears the Packers can be the hot team going into the NFC playoffs.

It would be nice to have Watson and Wicks back in time for the playoffs as well. Go Pack Go! Thanks, Since '61

I failed to mention in my post about how well Love has done, despite very little help from the run game. They have had 2 100 yard rushers all season. That was the last 2 games by Jones.

They currently rank 15th in rushing yards and 22nd in Rushing TD's. Take away the 4 Rushing TD's that Love has ran in, and they would then be tied for last.

The difference Jones makes for the offense is crazy. I like Dillon, but its night and day difference with Jones on the field then Dillon.

If we could get a healthy Jones, Watson, Wicks, Reed, and Musgrave back for a playoff run, our offense might be the most explosive offense in the playoffs. I don't know if we have had a game where we have had everyone of these players available for a game.

RC if we truly want to see the MLF offense the Packers need a healthy Aaron Jones and of course an effective OL. But Aaron Jones makes the OL better because he reaches the LOS so quickly. Thanks, Since '61

And Musgrave!

And Reed!

And Dillon!

And Savage!

And how many more? The list of players out and/or playing at less than 100% is ... considerable. Makes this win that much more meaningful.

I've been sold on Love sine long before this last stretch. Amazing how he can just deal with whoever has to play with amongst all these youngsters.

It's more perplexing how the D can just turn it on. I hope it's not just a one game fluke, but it shows what they can do when playing aggressive. I haven't seen TGR's snap counts yet, but they seemed to be playing more down linemen this game and it helped control the runs and escape routes for the QBs.

Moreso than what the GBP defense did, look no further than the players and the attitude of the opponent before you get too excited about Barry-ball and this Packer defense.

They have shown in the past that they can feast on incompetent QB play and downtrodden team spirit. Please remember the LA Ram game earlier this season for reference.

But... even if the QB has a less than stellar reputation, if he plays hard and the team around him also puts effort into their game, Barry-ball gets shredded. Please see Devito, Tommy and Young, Bryce for reference.

"Incompetent QB play" has turned into MVP play against the Packers as you show. The D flipped a switch and played aggressive against both QBs. We were all afraid it would be the other way around, so I'm content to take it for what it's worth.

Now just beat a team trending in the other direction.

And Justin Fields is actually good.

So is Patrick Mahommes.

Hey, when Packers defense streaks, they play well in twos 😎

Gonna need some of that ...

I have a great deal of respect for Jordan Love. I'm excited to watch his continued development as a QB and a leader. It was so satisfying to watch him confident and in rhythm against a good Vikings defense in a loud environment on the road. There's always doubt, but this kid has faced much tougher challenges than what lies ahead for him now. Now, all his hard work pays off and, like '61 said, the game slows down for him and the challenging becomes routine.

I am really enjoying seeing the growth of Love as a QB this season. I have been on the post-Rodgers Love-wagon since the end of 2021 season and what I said is exactly what has happened.

Rodgers was traded a year too late.

The Packers missed out on a franchise rebuilding draft haul - see Seattle draft picks! (Thank Gutey for his absolute steal of a draft this past year, his kids are tearing it up!)

Love was a very good college QB with all the tools to excel at the NFL level.

Love needed the opportunity and some decent coaching (see Tom Clements hire) to reach his potential.

The Packers W number over-under was too low this season (they have already passed it and some of us are cashing in)

It has been an interesting season for sure, and isn't that all we can really ask for?

May we live in interesting times...

I know LaFleur has mentioned this a few times now, but there was definitely a switch for Love and this team. It was in the Steelers game. There was something about that game that just felt different.

Prior to that game,
Love was 155 out of 260 (59%) for 1720 yards, 12 TD's, 8 Int's. Average rating of 85.45.

From that game on,
Love is 190 out of 287 (66%) for 2123 yards, 18 TD's, 3 Int's. Average rating of 105.88.

From that moment things just are different. Its like the game slowed down for him. He is in sync with the players around him. You can see the rapport him and Reed have built.

Love currently ranks 10th in yards, 3rd in TD's, Tied for 3rd in total TD's. That is really damn impressive considering the players he has around him. He has the youngest group of WR/TE's in the league. He has dealt with a ton of injuries around him. He finally had a WR cross the 100 yard mark, In week 17. We have 3 players with more then 500 yards receiving, and none with over 700 yards. Jayden Reed leads the Packers WR in yards. He has 681. He ranks 50th in the league in yards. There are multiple teams that have multiple guys that have more receiving yards then Reed. San Francisco has 3. Miami, Dallas, Philadelphia, Detroit, Cleveland, Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, Seattle, Houston, Las Vegas, Buffalo, Minnesota, Kansas City, Jacksonville all have 2. And there are a lot of teams that have at least 1.

Love has exceeded my expectations. To be fair though I didn't put any expectations on him for this year. I thought there was a chance he could be great, a chance he could be mediocre, and a chance he could be really bad.

I am looking forward to seeing what this offense can do once it has all its weapons and a year of experience together.

That Steelers game, along with whatever else chang d, that's when JL learned to throw the ball away to avoid getting sacked. Before that game did he ever do it at all? After that game he's rarely not used it well.

What was most impressive at the start of the season even though he had a couple years as the backup to prepare was the fact that he had command of the offense and did not have happy feet in the pocket, two signs that are key ingredients for future success. Consistent accuracy was his initial problem and that continued to improve with as much credit for it going to him and to the young receiving corps and the health of the offensive line. People forget how Tom Clements guided a young Aaron Rodgers under the same circumstances years earlier, Clements value to the team is under the radar and I believe he likes it that way. Looks like lightning has struck a 3rd time on Oneida Street.

At TC, you could literally feel it in the stands when JL took command of the offense as compared to #8. And 8 is a really good backup QB for this team. But poise is JL's middle name, and he had the respect of this team all along.

That glue can serve this team very well ...

I put that link there just for you, little buddy, because you never have anything good to say about Rodgers. In fact, you were screaming for Love to be benched a few short weeks ago "how worse could Clifford be?", I think was an exact quote. You bemoaned how in the world the coaching staff could let Love continue to flounder and now here you are not only praising Tom Clements for his work with Love, but congratulating him for not accepting a job he was never offered in New York. Risible!

Of course I am congratulating Clements now because of the vast improvement of Love exactly when he was doing so badly. He turned the corner because of Clements and people have the right to see advancement and give credit to the the two who have done the transformation. And how do you know he wasn't offered a job in NY, but it would make sense if Hacket wasn't there Rodgers would have lobbied for him as well there big shot. Obviously the work and time given by Clement has paid off! I liked and respected Rodgers in his first early years, but as time passed thru McCarthy and LaFluer Rodgers simply became a prick, that anyone I know couldn't stand him any longer and it was way past due to dump his diva ass!

"a $40.3 million dead cap hit thanks to Rodgers"

Cory, how is it Rodgers' fault that the Packers offered him a new contract even though they had drafted his replacement ? If you had said "thanks to Murphy, Gute and the gang for the Rodgers contract", that would be less nonsensical.

I'ts been a season full of highs and lows and ups and downs. But make no mistake to watch Jordan Love's growth both as a player and leader has been special.
Thank you Gutey for having the stones to take him in the draft knowing all the pushback that would come from it.
To now have yet another (potentially) multiple year special QB lead this organization for the foreseeable future is incredible. Thirty years ....and counting. Not many organizations can say that !!
The energy and attitude of this years team seems night and day different compared to past years. This 8-8 version appears to be excited, confident and eager to earn that post season nod with a win this Sunday.
It's a refreshing difference compared to the chatter, drama and distractions from last season that ultimately resulted in a shocking and lackluster performance ending to last season. Out with the old, entitled drama and in with a talented and focused group of youngsters that's only about FOOTBALL!!
The future looks bright .....again in
Green Bay !! Let's go Bear hunting!!!

Gute knows what he is doing. He had to transition the Packers out of the Rogers era without a civil war - no mean feat.Whilst doing that he found us a new Q.B. and a new defence and a new attack. If he can get us a new D.C. we might start to shake it up.
I am still not sure about MLF.

Yes gute and lafluer get credit but I thunk Tom Clements has more to do with this than people think. Also for those bashing on rodgers clements isnt here without him .

I hope gute takes control of getting a real defensive coordinator on this team because how much more capitol can you spend on a defense that lets face it is not good . One game here or their against a back up means nothing. The talent is their
