Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Anything's Possible.
The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.
By JerseyAl

Pigs can fly. Kale can taste good. You can get blood from a stone. Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers can actually agree to try it again. Over seven years since they last snarled at each other on a football field, this dynamic duo is getting back together in McCarthy's hometown and the vibe is all kumbaya. So much so, in fact, that Rodgers actually reported for the first day of VOLUNTARY OTAs!!! Even walked into the building before 7:00AM, hours before practice was scheduled to start. Yes, anything is possible.
Perhaps the best idiom to use here is "absence makes the heart grow fonder." Their time away from each other has surely helped them appreciate the good times and successes they had together. But will Rodgers appreciate being told which plays to run, the main cause of the fracture that developed between them in the last couple of Packers years? Will McCarthy even try to call the majority of the plays and then get pissed when Rodgers ignores most of them? I don't know any of these answers, but it should be fun to watch — and I have my popcorn ready.
~ As highlighted in Aaron Nagler's post yesterday, the Packers handed out a ton of promotions within the organization's player personnel department. Most have been with the Packers for many years, ranging from 10 years to over 30. You could look at this in various ways, depending on your view of the team. If you think the player personnel department does a good job, as the Packers are always in the playoff hunt, retaining these experienced professionals provides continuity. If you are of the opinion they have failed with respect to having built teams that won more Super Bowls than they have on their ledger, you are shaking your head and muttering "same old, same old..." Whichever side you are on, it's a given that generous raises were given out and the money is there to do so. This despite the narrative that the Packers are at a financial disadvantage to the other 31 NFL teams that are privately owned and all in larger markets than Green Bay. That's not to say that those things aren't true, just that some of it may be posturing on Ed Policy's part to keep reminding the NFL of what the Packers mean to the league and that they should be "taken care of."
~ The Packers are stockpiling cornerbacks, adding former Vanderbilt cornerback Marlon Jones, who has successfully battled and beat Stage 3 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. This addition came after the waiver pickup of M.J. Devonshire last week, the drafting of Brandon Cisse and Domani Jackson and the free agent signing of Benjamin St-Juste. They are added to a cornerback room already containing Keisiean Nixon, Carrington Valentine, Kamal Hadden, Jaylin Simpson and Shemar Bartholomew. This brings the cornerback room up to 10 players, or 11 if you count Javon Bullard (listed as a safety but mostly expected to play slot cornerback). I'll have my eyes on Kamal Hadden, if healthy, who was really coming on and earning CB snaps before his terrible injury.
~ Finally, although it's been thoroughly discussed here already, a few of my own observations on the Packers schedule:
There's been a lot of hate for the Packers having to play on Christmas. Personally, I don't hate the idea, I just don't like that they were given the 1:00EST time slot. Of the three games on that day, the early slot is the only one that will conflict with my Christmas traditions. I would have loved to finish the day with Packers-Bears at night, or even late afternoon. Instead, I won't be watching the game live.
Studying the schedule, I just noticed there are no back-to-back division games. I can't say for sure, but my impression is that this rarely happens.
Yes, the Packers finish with four out of their last five games at home. However, the script has been flipped on December games at Lambeau. They are no longer the advantage they are assumed to be. Also, of the four teams, only the Dolphins could be considered an easy game. Buffalo, Houston and Detroit will all be very tough outs.
Much has been said about the lack of a normal bye week on the Packers schedule, but in effect, they get four mini-byes, which I think actually turns out better. Of course, I'd much rather the Packers don't have to play any Thursday (or now Wednesday) games, but this could turn out to be a bit of a silver lining. Some extra rest at various points of the season instead of one long bye doesn't seem so bad.
Not withstanding my dislike for having to play on Thursday Nights, the fact that five of the Packers home games overall will be prime time games has me revved up. Let's go!

It's disgusting to me how so many talking heads in the media keep trashing Aaron Rogers and the Steelers. Terms like dishonorable and disgusting style of play are thrown around for the same reasons that previously made him an untouchable superstar! Since when is an aversion to interceptions and sacks a bad thing? How about seeing what happens when he has more than one receiver and an actual running game before pronouncing Rogers as a washed up hack and the Steelers organization as stupid. I actually heard Robert Mays from the Athletic say that "any other option at QB" would have been better for the Steelers this year. McCarthy gets the same treatment from a coaching perspective. Despite better overall career numbers than Sean Payton he gets labeled a loser with antiquated offense while Payton is lauded as a future HOF coach. I'm not a Steelers fan but I'll be rooting for them this year for sure. Would it surprise Packer fans if QB1 sticks it to all his naysayers?
The internal promotions are the right thing to do and way overdue. Without an owner to hoard profits the Packers should be cultivating an identity of sharing the wealth in order to attract and retain talent throughout the organization. We're sometimes too chintzy with our cash!
Why couldn't Gute have worked on the CB room last year when the needs were just as obvious? The Hobbe's signing had us all scratching our heads then too, it never made any sense and predictably failed.
I love the schedule! Holiday and prime time games have become a big part of my families traditions so bring it on!

Regarding the CB room last year, my thought at the time was that Gute and Company must have thought quite highly of that room to not address it at the time. Us fans thought differently and based on what is happening in that room this year, we were right!

I read the focus on new blood as not just being a tacit acknowledgement of failings past, but reflecting the change in anticipated coverage philosophy. All the new blood seem to have the speed to track players. Previously the emphasis was seemingly on tacklers who thrived facing the QB. While tackling still seems important, I think we are seeing a competition that will stress coverage of players not zones much more. That’s not so good for the likes of Hadden or, longer term, Nixon. I think we are seeing a change in type at CB.

With regards to Rodgers I will admit that there are some writers and analyst that may go overboard with their thoughts on Rodgers. You must remember that many times these writers and analyst are not writing what they truly believe but what they believe people will read. That is why people need to read a number of writings on the same subject and be critical of what they read and the source.
Yes the Steelers were wrong with how they handled Rodgers and that as far as I could tell they did not even look into bringing in other options. Yes Rodgers can still play and yes he can be successful this year if provided the protection and the right play calling. I do not see that happening with the Steelers.
A team should never let a player hold them hostage, especially a player that will probably play one more year. The Steelers would have been better off trying to get Tua or Murrey if they wanted just a one year bridge. At least those two players provide you the option to go more years if they work in your system.
As for McCarthy, yes he has been a good coach but he lacks innovation. McCarthy is at the stage of his career where he should hire a play calling OC and just manage the team. I believe he would be more successful. As a person McCarthy is better than Peyton as a coach it is close, as an innovator Peyton is better.
As for McCarthy and Rodgers reunion I will go to the idea you cannot return to the past. I do not expect much better from the Steelers this year. If Rodgers plays the whole season the Steelers will not have a QB1 ready for next year. I work with two Steelers fans and neither like the idea of Rodgers coming back.

You'd think with the coin these guys are making, they could get their union to insist on double-time. That might slow the owner's roll.

Many people have to work on holidays and do not get paid extra. I do not feel bad for the players or the coaches and any other high ly paid employee that has to work on the holiday. I do feel bad for the feild staff and team staff that may not be paid as much.
I was a firefighter in the Air Force for 15 years and had to work holidays oh and I was deployed. I did not complain because I chose to serve and my job in the Air Force. The military families are the ones we should be thinking about.

Thank you for your service CH72.
"Many people have to work on holidays........"
Yes they do. I worked in the telecommunications industry (telephone, cable TV and internet) and the holidays were some of our busiest days. People wanted to watch football games, call family or send emails to friends. This required staff to be on duty round the clock on holidays. Our people were always paid double time for holidays (no union) and we made sure we imported a holiday feast from a local restaurant or hotel (and served by management) to make sure our people knew they were appreciated. Never as good as being home with family, but the best we could do while still serving our customers who demanded our services on holidays.

And how is that so obvious? Finally in 2026 GB is starting the long overdue overhaul of the CB room. In that overhaul I would guess a goal would be shutdown CBs. Spending $17 million on the "best" CBs didn't work so well last year. The guy I wanted last year that the Giants signed was pretty much a failure, so they drafted and signed FAs.
Cisse could very well be the "shutdown" CB of the future. Don't criticize the Packers for finally addressing a huge problem 3 years too late.

I'll never understand fans criticising a gm for not trading up in the draft. This isnt like madden where you can just force trades through. It takes 2 to tango and we have no way of knowing whether or not it was even possible. If you want to criticise the gm, at least do it for something that isnt completely speculatory.

Aaron Rodgers to the Steelers is both disgusting and dishonorable in terms of style of play. AR is so averse to interceptions and sacks that it actually limits the offense’s efforts. His constant whining over having only one good receiver and no running game is atrocious. I think Pitt would be better with any other option at QB besides Rodgers. McCarthy is a loser with an antiquated offense. He is no HOF coach, unlike Sean Peyton.

Look at Favre when he first came to Green Bay.

Week 5-7:
Bears
Cowboys

With four of the six at home and four games against bears and lions it will be critical to win at least four IF not sweep to make or break the season.

The way the Packers play and how they finish games the whole season will tell us what type of team we have.
I read an article yesterday on two analyst predicting the wins and loses of all the teams. They were close to my too early to predict prediction overall.

My primary criticism of LaF has been that he goes into an offensive shell and tries to shorten games far too early. If they could continue to execute a much more conservative plan, that would be one thing...but too often the 3-and-outs follow and they hand away leads and momentum.

Well said Dobber. MLF really needs to depend more on his staff so he can be the head coach. He can't handle so much on his plate and you are right on about being conservative. My Iowa Hawkeyes rely on the same principle, don't take any chances, let the defense win it when an extra TD or FG puts the game effectively out of reach. It's called playing not to lose.

And when he kept his foot on the gas in Denver that resulted in an int and Watson getting hurt, fans called him too aggressive. Damned if does, damned if he doesn't. At the end of the day, it comes down to the players making plays. Nobody would be calling Lafleur conservative if the oline had stayed healthy and the run game actually worked. The players still have to get the job done.

The biggest point differential in that game in our favor was 23:14, immediately after half time when Jacobs ran it in. Of course LaFleur did not dial it back then. Especially as Denver were one of the best 4th quarter teams—the best that didn’t play us twice. To dial it back then would have been ridiculous with 28 minutes remaining.

I like that they get to close with a home-heavy schedule, but the fact that they close with three games that are likely to be very physical and with two divisional games they'll likely need to win makes me worry that they'll hit the postseason (God willing) beat up.
We'll see how the Vikings fare with Kyler Murray. He's been a wilting flower since he blew out his knee, but getting the Vikings to open creates what amounts to a lot of unscouted looks against a team that has good frontline talent (but little depth) and a very aggressive defense that has a lot of new personnel. They're the real wild card in this division, and I've seen some pundits pick them to win it.

I don’t know why the Steelers are doing it, but Rodgers and MM both coexisted well for more than a decade. It may just be that they are good for each other now. That assumes that Rodgers body hasn’t declined too far and that MM is open to the inevitable ideas that Rodgers will have. It’s a brief swan song most likely. Maybe it will work for them. For the Steelers I don’t see how it helps them in future, but who knows, perhaps they have a hidden plan.
As far as the promotions go, it’s simply linear bumps to replace Sullivan with the people most likely to have taken on the respective roles since then. Hendrickson has long been seen as either due for promotion or recruitment, so now we will see.
If I have a problem it’s not with competence (to the extent that’s even knowable), but with the seemingly automatic assumption that internal is better. It may well be, but my experience is that it never always is and, if it’s always the case, inevitably leads to narrowing of ideas and perspectives.
So we move on. The schedule is fine for us as it turns out, this year at least. Nothing to beef about football wise for the Packers. The league is pissing me off with its greed, lately the attempt to leverage streaming dollars and potentially messing with divisional game venues now and ridiculous in season travel (not this year for us). I don’t want 18 games, I particularly do not want 18 games with 2 overseas. I want healthy, fresh players (as much as possible), playing the best football.
It’s time to start looking at actual players and play. Camp and real practice may be a way off, but this is a roster with a lot of depth we don’t really know about. It’s about time a player or two came out of that “nowhere” and I’m looking forward to seeing who starts to demand notice.
I see two dark horses that rarely get referenced, one is Brant Banks at LT. He may not be a big contributor this season, but he impressed me a lot last year as a guy who could become a genuine LT.
The other is Neyor. This is more wishful thinking than anything. He only arrived right before the season and only played 3 snaps in the playoff game. However, a 9.98 RAS guy who is 6’4” athlete with those metrics, weighing 218 and who runs a 4.40 is potential lightning in a bottle, if it can be captured.
I wanted Sturdivant predraft, but Neyor is, purely on potential, even more interesting. Summer is the time for optimism. He’s my fingers crossed hope to be watching early this summer when it’s only skill types that are worth following.
golfpacker61

I see a lot of potential in our backup WRs CW. Yeah we lost 2 guys but they were far from unreplaceable. When this next group starts getting up to speed we will again have a very strong WR position group with a lot of interchangeable spots. Including Williams with Neyor, Sturdivant, and Shepard, we have a great group of large, fast men with great hands.
But I am still excited for Skyy Moore to have a great shot to be on the team and see if he regains some of his WR mojo if given the chance.
I wish I felt as good about the TE group. Some idiot in an article I read today suggested we need to give Musgrave a contract extension. He was probably also a guy recommending we sign Cousins or trade for Richardson from the Colts.
I have also read 2 articles today about Luke Schoonmaker's days in Dallas being numbered. His blocking is the reason GB should want him.
Coldworld
May 20, 2026 at 11:41 am
I avoided TE, simply because I’ve said it so often and nothing has changed. I think it will, but I don’t think it will yet. It’s going to take time for things to shake out elsewhere on other rosters and and the health of individual unsigned players.
I agree that there are other WRs of interest. I just picked the one I think has the highest upside. It’s not a prediction but a “if I could pick one to succeed” type expression of optimism.
I actually think the most likely to surprise from the depths at WR on the 53 without a massive breakout is Shepherd. That’s based on his skillset and role fit (Doubs’) and lack of depth competition there and on the way the Packers treated him and referenced him before he went on IR before the last game of the regular season.

Rodgers had one receiver, Metcalf; that's not enough. AR had to make lemonade with several TE's who intermittently produced. He did very well when he had a number of competent receivers and a decent Left Tackle. Can't understand why teams don't provide competent supporting casts. Jordan Love has the same problem. I don't post here that much anymore because the Packers have landed in a valley of mediocrity at the top for the lengthy, foreseeable future. I'll watch a few games but my expectations are very low.

Even with 10 CBs currently in the CB room I'm not sure that the Packers have significantly improved their CB position group. Their best hope is that Cisse can replace either Valentine or Nixon at one of the boundary spots. The other hope is that Hadden is fully recovered from his injury and can earn more snaps at one of the boundary positions. If nothing else we have added depth to the position but at this point the quality of the depth and quality of whoever ends up starting on the boundary are still question marks for the 2026 Packers.
Al makes an excellent point about the Packers home games, especially those at the end of the season. It's critical that the Packers reestablish Lambeau as a tough place for road teams to play and as a legitimate home field advantage. Thanks, Since '61

Valentine has to show he can overcome his fear of contact. That’s how I see it. He can cover, actually well, but he’s not going to to survive on that alone unless he can become at least averagely physical. As a former rugby player, some relish it, some can never overcome the instinctive hesitation. At this point it’s not good odds, but I’m sure he knows he needs to. Let’s hope, because he has coverage skills. All the new ones are willing to initiate contact (with varying degrees of technical proficiency). That’s been a theme.
As to Hadden, I don’t see the athleticism to play quarters. He lacks long speed and he is extremely stiff hipped (all his agility scores are just bad). That worked in Haffley off zone. I have real doubts about it translating to an approach where zone is really only the starting point except for very quick release short passing or run heavy offenses.

We only dress 4 or 5 CBs. I think you can pretty much bet that if they're healthy, that'll be Nixon, Valentine, St. Juste and Cisse. That's who is going to play for us if they're healthy. The other stuff, IMO, is the Packers preparing for 2027, when Valentine and Nixon might both be gone.
Nixon and Valentine are unfairly maligned, IMO. They have been the starters ever since Rasul Douglas was traded. Valentine has started 30 games for us since then, and played in 47. He's healthy and available, unlike people like Alexander and Stokes and Hobbs
Nixon has started 45 games in the last 3 years.
Over that period of time, the Packers have finished with above average scoring defenses., with difference DCs and different schemes. Last year, until we lost Parsons, it was one of the better defenses in the league.
These guys have done a solid job for us. They aren't perfect by any means, but they have been doing the job.
I'll be surprised if it's St. Juste and Cisse starting on opening day.

LH I think that you are correct on the 4 CBs most likely to be on the 53 man roster. I'm expecting at least 2 or 3 of the remaining CBs to make it to the PS and maybe one of them makes the 53 as an ST player.
In any case CB is one of the areas where the Packers need to have some improved play if they want to go further in the playoffs. Thanks, Since '61

4 CBs seems unlikely unless they never want to play Dime. That would mean no back ups and an injury limiting a fairly standard defensive option. They opened with 6 last year:
Nixon
Hobbs
Valentine
Melton
Hadden
Robinson
and 5 safeties as well! 3 of those are gone or injured. One may or may not be a CB this year.
Nixon
Cisse
Valentine
St Juste
Jackson
Melton
All seem relatively plausible if healthy, as is keeping 6. It’s unlikely we keep 5 safeties again, not least because Anderson is no longer here for STs (Bullard was the third).

"Even with 10 CBs currently in the CB room I'm not sure that the Packers have significantly improved their CB position group." It depends what your definition of "significantly improved" is. There is no question we have a stronger, top to bottom, CB group than we have had the last 2 years.
Signing St Juste was a solid start in the right direction. Getting rid of Hobbs was very painful financially, but he never should have been signed in the first place. Cisse and Jackson are also great draft picks to push starters to be better or be replaced. Cisse immediately and Jackson has the potential to challenge maybe in 2027.
The other guys are just fodder at this point, there will be other chances to sign better FA CBs later. Hadden is a CB I was happy we picked up last year. An ubfortunate injury robbed him of a chance to show off his talent. Was his ankle injury an Achilles tear? That seems like a worse injury to come back from than an ACL tear these days.

" Was his ankle injury an Achilles tear? "
He broke both lower leg bones just above the ankle. I think there was ligament damage, too.

There's injuries and there's INJURIES. This one was a bad one. For a normal person, you'd just be hoping you could walk without a limp; I'm dubious that you come back from that completely.

Hopefully, Al is eating his spinach as greens are good for people our age, plus it's a cool color along with gold.

Good on all those loyal soldiers that were promoted. Sure, bumping Luke Benuska up to Senior Department of Redundancy Department Mid-High Analyst was a reach, but ya do what ya gotta do.

"~ As highlighted in Aaron Nagler's post yesterday, the Packers handed out a ton of promotions within the organization's player personnel department. "
I've always been of the opinion that organizations need new blood injected into them from time to time, no matter what the track record of success. Even though it usually means you're losing a quality person, opportunities are created when you have people hired away. In this case the opportunity will come lower on the organizational depth chart rather than higher which doesn't really change the dynamic very much. The fact that Jon-Eric Sullivan was hired into a GM spot tells us that the league thinks highly of what's going on in the Packers organization.
"I'll have my eyes on Kamal Hadden, if healthy, who was really coming on and earning CB snaps before his terrible injury."
Double breaks in the lower leg are not trivial, and it will be interesting to see if he bounces back at a similar level, but he really wasn't playing all that much, defensively--31 snaps in their drubbing of the Vikings and then after no defensive snaps for several weeks a handful of snaps against Baltimore before getting hurt. His STs snaps were on the uptick later in the season, but he'll have to be pretty good there and will have to play really well in preseason--maybe the Packers cut bait on Valentine?--to stick on the 53.
"~ Finally, although it's been thoroughly discussed here already, a few of my own observations on the Packers schedule:"
There's a meaningful shift in scheduling this season: last season after opening with the Lions, the Packers played all their remaining division games from week 12 on. In 2024, they played 4 of their division games from week 10 on. This year, only two division games come after their bye and 3 of their last 5 are against AFC teams. They will need to make hay up through the bye, because this schedule will make it harder to play catch-up later in the season...maybe playing at home will mitigate that.
I'm one who doesn't mind the Christmas game. Yes, I don't care for the early start on Christmas, but if they're going to play outdoors on a potentially cold day, they should play during daylight hours.

If injecting new blood is just done to inject new blood, I'm not sure how helpful it is. If you can get a guy who is going to strengthen 1265 Lombardi, great. I think that you either believe in your organization or you don't, and if you do, then you keep promoting people from inside the organization.
The big shift is that we opened last season with a home game against the defending division champion. That's like, #1 on the most important games list.
This year, we play 3 out of 4 on the road. Our home game is against Atlanta. The games against Minnesota, the Jets, and Tampa aren't as "high-stakes", and our first high-stakes game is in Week 5, at home against Chicago (#1 on this year's list)

I made a fair amount of money betting on Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway. He didn't change things up for the sake of new blood. He just did methodical business. Lots of wins, few losses. Steady.
I sold off my stake when he retired. Thanks Warren. PS. it was way better than betting on football.

People hate it when I say this, but being methodical and playing the percentages avoids big mistakes. It's a successful strategy.

I don't hate it when you say that.
I hate it when you confused a player occupying a starting position with the player being a quality starter.

I don't see any value in discussing the issue of "promoting from within" vs. "hiring from outside the organization" without putting the discussion into context, i.e. how do the Packers compare to other NFL front offices in this respect? I doubt that anyone has bothered to look that up.
We are getting into the realm of fan micromanagement with this subject anyway. We don't know anything about these people.

Thinking back to some fan comments years back, didn't Rodgers and McCarthy hate each other?
Didn't Rodgers get McCarthy fired?
