Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - A Tale of Two Offenses

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

At halftime of this game, I was so disgusted, I ran upstairs and raided the snack cabinet. Mixed nuts, tortilla chips, granola bars, I had them all in a ten minute period, hoping the food would wipe away the disgusting feeling I had that the Packers were going to soil themselves on Sunday Night National TV against their old quarterback. Mind you, this is something I almost NEVER do. I have an unwritten rule of not eating anything after dinner, something that helped me shed 25 pounds and keep it off. But the last thing I wanted to do was sit there in front of the TV at halftime and ruminate on how the Packers offense was ONCE AGAIN, shooting themselves in the foot. So I caved, and I ate. But it didn't really make me feel any better, sooooooo, lesson learned.

The Packers first half offense:
~First drive, dropped pass on third down, three and out.
~Second drive, six plays and a touchdown. the key? Never had to convert a third down.
~Third drive, six plays, Doubs drops another 3rd down pass down the left sideline. Wasn't an easy catch, but he got both hands on it. McManus misses the field goal.
~Fourth drive, three plays, including my all-time favorite, the second and 10 inside handoff which gains a yard. After an incomplete 3rd down pass. The Packers punt.
~Fifth drive, another three and out, this time Kraft drops a third down pass. The Packers punt.
~Sixth drive, 34 seconds left in the half. Love is allowed to air it out and completes four straight passes. McManus misses the field goal.

The Packers finished the half 0/4 on third down. Giving the ball back to Aaron Rodgers is never a good thing, which just added to my anxiety. Sure enough, he kept moving the Steelers down the field, but luckily, the Packers' defense was able to force field goals in all cases but one.
The second half offense was like watching a different team. LaFleur took the handcuffs off of Love and Jordan responded with the best game of his career and yet another stellar late game performance. I think it's time for LaFleur to let go of some of his predispositions and let Love be Love.

I've been asked about Jordan Love many times by many people this year if I think he will be THE GUY for Green Bay. I have reserved judgment and answered simply that what he does this year will allow me to truly know how I feel and answer that question. There's still more than half a season to go but I'm at about 80% yes and trending up right now.

Josh Jacobs is playing hurt.  This is an opinion but I think I'm right. Since he suffered that calf injury, he has played, but he is just not breaking tackles and gaining yards after contact like he usually does. With the Packers offensive line, breaking tackles is a must and Jacobs is just being taken down too easily.  I think he should be given this week off, which will probably require the use of some chloroform and duct tape, but whatever. Let him get fully healthy.

There was some nice Nate Hobbs subterfuge in the week leading up to the Steelers game. In the LaFleur press conferences, he kept saying how he was confident Nate Hobbs would bounce back with a strong game. Considering Hobbs was told to ride the pine Sunday night, perhaps the Packers wanted the Steelers to game plan for Hobbs to be the cornerback all week and then spring the Valentine surprise on them when the game started. I can just picture the Steelers giddily scheming up all kinds of "Hobbs beaters" in the offense game plan meetings.

Speaking of Valentine, as the conductor of the Carrington Valentine Hype Train, I'm pleased that the Packers finally listened to my pleas since training camp to play Valentine. Is he a Pro Bowler? No. Is he a "star?" No. But super competitive is what he is. He is not intimidated by any star receiver and will do everything he can to make life difficult for them. He also has that very short memory that cornerbacks need. If he gets beat, and he will, the very next play he'll be in that receiver's face again. He's not perfect, but he's better than Hobbs.

Personally, if I'm the offensive coordinator, when a go route is schemed up, I'm using Watson or Golden, not Doubs. Seems obvious, but...

Special Teams mistakes will just never go away. For whatever reason the Packers are cursed. Thanks to Andy Herman for compiling this list:

Holding on a kick return
A kickoff that goes into the end zone after hitting the landing zone (puts the Steelers on the 35 yard line)
Two missed field goals
A muffed punt
Holding on a punt return
Two Packers kick returns that only made it to the 23 and 25 yard lines.
But on the bright side, nothing got blocked!

I saw that the Bengals recently released Mike Pennell. He could be a useful depth pickup for the Packers, but I think they are committed to developing Brinson and Stackhouse, even in what was described as a year to turn up the urgency.

Something I learned from Packers.com:  Jordan Love tied Bret Favre's franchise record of twenty straight completions, but in reality, he threw 21 straight. However, any stats (receptions, rushes, etc.) on two point conversions don't count as individual statistics, only the points are counted. So statistically, it's like his pass to DOubs on the two point try never happened.

Does this sound Familiar? Jaire Alexander is supposedly somewhat healthy again (not listed on the injury report) and has been practicing, but at least four times he has been a healthy scratch after going through the pre-game warm-ups. Major kudos to Gutey for letting him walk.

Go Pack Go!

Love will have his ups and downs as all QBs do. He just needs to be in a position to run a safe offense behind a good O-line. Till the run game gets going (and I believe it will) that safe offense may be passing. As long as MLF can keep changing the looks, the O-line keeps protecting well, and Kraft is allowed to sneak out to catch passes along with the other receivers the Packers will be a tough team to beat.

The team that has the easiest time defeating the Packers seems to be the Packers. As I've noted before, they can't keep winning in spite of special teams. This has been proven season after season.

I think McManus will be ok. I think it may have been too soon but maybe it just takes time to get the rust off. The shorter second missed kick looks he was just overcompensating after the first one. He was one of the reasons we had more confidence in STs at the start of the season.

G'mornin', Steve!
MLF did change things up in the second half, with Emanual Wilson, and it worked.
As for McManus, yeah, I too think it was too early, he was only a partial participant at Thursday's practice and a game-time decision while Lavrisik is still on the 53 and was the game time scratch.
WTF? Why not give McManus another week of rest, the kid was great!

Like I said, maybe McManus just had to kick the rust off no matter when he started to kick in games again, so it was good he did it when it didn't cost the game.

Mostly just a bunch of complaints after a big win. This is now the norm. I guess inspiring come from behind wins on the road against good teams have become boring to Packer fans. I started listening to Andy Herman's podcast with Mike Wahle, and after ten minutes of listening to Wahle talk about the Packers subpar run blocking and praise the Steelers jumbo package, I shut it off. Not that I don't want to hear about my team's shortcomings. I just don't think the shortcomings should dominate the discussion when they are winning. Isn't football supposed to be fun?

I was not panicking after the first half as apparently most Packer fans were. It was a close game, and the only real difference was the performance of the kickers. I didn't think Jordan Love had any handcuffs on him either. The drive-killing plays that were mentioned were all pass plays. Sometimes receivers drop the ball, or the throw is off target, or whatever. Sometimes--believe it or not--the opposing defense makes some good plays to stop your drive. You live to fight another day. I'm sure glad the Packers players and coaches don't get discouraged as easily as the fans.

It is neat that Love and the Packers are coming out hot after the half. Used to seem that they'd come out hot at the start and try to hang on and had trouble coming from behind.

This seems like a new good development especially on the road. Don't know if I can use "new" with "development" in the same sentence, but I'm sure someone will let me know.

I think the worry about the team from others (other than special teams) is the run game and the blocking for it. Don't think it puts a damper on the win, but the run game travels well and works good in bad weather. I hope the O-line gets and stays healthy so it can start to work better together. They have time to keep getting better.

Regardless of his early negativity, Wahle did say that the O line has some technical ( pad level, hand placement, etc) flaws which made sense to me. Also, running on 2 and 10 occasionally is fine with me as the D is usually in a pass prevent mode. Wilson 11 for 61 seems quicker to the hole, so I agree give Jacobs a must needed rest before a very important matchup vs EaGULLS.

Wilson also has that tendency to run up the backs of his blockers from time to time. I think he's better about that now than he was last season.

I agree, Pete. If you're always running plays the other team expects, it becomes tough to execute them effectively throughout the game. In my opinion, you need to mix in plays they least expect to stay effective. Nobody would have complained about this play if it had resulted in 15 yards and a first down—that kind of thing happens all the time in the NFL, and there's reasons an offensive coordinator calls them.

Vince's teams ran about 20 plays the entire season.
When you execute at all 11 positions, the play calling doesn't make that big of a difference.
It's early in the season, but we're lucky to get 8/11 executing well on any given play.
8 or more and we can roll.
Anything less and we lose to the browns.
GPG!

There is a lot of truth to your point about enjoying the ride however I think you overstated your case when you indicated most Packer fans were panicking in the first half. I think many fans were more disgusted/irritated than panicked. Al outlined his reasons for being disgusted and I would add one more - the play calling in the second quarter. The Packers were moving the ball well with a lateral passing attack in Q1 and it was not seen again until Q3. What happened to those lateral passes in Q2? Why did LaFleur move away from what was working so well? The Steelers certainly hadn't stopped it yet and didn't stop it in the second half either.

I believed the Packers were going to win the game, but I certainly had some questions about the play calling during the game. Just being a fan with an inquiring mind.......

I appreciate all three of your comments Greg, Steve, and Guam.

At the half, my wife said "Packers are in trouble". I said "no...we've held serve. But made too many mistakes. This is far from over."

The first half was Nixon's Nadir...as in his low point of the season. Wow...his back faced the QB on almost every target he gave up or got penalized on for PI. He played better in the 2nd half...but table stakes, he couldn't get much worse.

The second half was the "Kraft YAC and Cheese" because he was cooking up an amazing performance. So was Watson...blocking and catching like an all pro too. And the receivers blocked for each other as Love completed targets on play after play.

Love was confident and cool...and on fire. Have to get JJ healed up...it was clear to me he was not running with his usual power and quickness. Even his cuts seemed labored. Thank goodness for Wilson.

Greg,
I don't know about panic, but I can't deny disappointment! Most often, playing 30 minutes of good football won't be enough to win the game, and we've seen that often enough the past few years. Sometimes 1st half, sometimes 2nd half.
Playing from behind can be a Good or Bad thing for the Packers, and we've all seen that go both ways, the same goes for 'Playing not to lose'!
The most disappointing part is that they never seem to kick the shit out of the teams they should, it never seems to materialize.

Al, I was also very disgusted watching the Packers in the first half that I went to bed. In the middle of the night I was shocked to see the final score and at first I thought it was 35-25 with Pittsburgh getting the win. What a great 4th quarter and Watson had some huge blocks and catches. Kraft is showing how good he can be, and Love with some clutch throws under pressure. Its a long season though we can't complain with the way the season is unfolding.

I am a bigger fan than you. Born and raised in Wisconsin and Packers fan since the 1960's even after moving to other states. I took lots of heat when I lived in Chicago and lucky my car was not keyed. I cheered them on in the 70's and 80's when they won 4 or 5 games a year. I know every player and live and breathe the Pack. I was on little to no sleep for a few days and East Coast is home now where games start at 8:20. I shouldn't have to explain to you but that's why.

That first half was a thing to forget. The second half, however , was a thing of beauty! I'll take the W, and am looking forward to better play, for a whole game, from this team, next game!
Too bad about Jaire. I will always remember his blitz of Kark Cousins, in the end zone, for a sack and a Safety! Also, for his doing the griddy, after kicking Jefferson's ass, all game long, in Minneapolis.

Watching Love accept the challenge of showing Rodgers who's the boss was nice to see. When Love zones in he is everything that you want in your starting QB. If we can figure out how to start faster we will see more of second half Love. Maybe abandon trying to be a run first team behind that O-line would be a good start.

...Personally, if I'm the offensive coordinator, when a go route is schemed up, I'm using Watson or Golden, not Doubs. Seems obvious, but...

Totally with you on this Al. Let's start using our WR speed with Watson, Golden and Williams. It doesn't need to be deep routes just a little more catch me if you can.

I thought Jacobs would be more of a factor in this game but the Steelers were going all out to stop him. They bit hard on play action or blitzed from the middle which left the middle of the field wide open. They did a better job of taking advantage in the second half. Also a lot of the problems in the first half were drops not necessarily scheme. Love was making the throws.

Exactly! If those catches get made ,maybe we’re talking about a blowout? I think the team showing resilience is more important than having anxiety over a couple dropped passes that made things look worse than they really were

“I think it's time for LaFleur to let go of some of his predispositions and let Love be Love.” It’s what supposedly happened in late 2023 when the team took off and Love with them then vanished in 2024. So what does that statement really mean? The answer I think has considerable significance.

I agree with you on Jacobs. Fortunately Wilson continues to look capable and does a pretty good job moving the chains. This is why we are lucky to have him. I have often wondered whether he would benefit, as Jacobs does, from getting snaps throughout the game. This week would be an ideal one to find out while resting Jacobs.

Valentine is our best cover corner. He’s also looked a lot more physically competent this year. That was his downside. While it may not.be a strength, this year it’s not been a weakness. Therefore he should be starting. It’s as simple as that. Wicks lacks straight line speed and go routes negate his elite short area advantage completely.

Doubs caught a lot of long over the shoulder passes in college. He’s not my first choice on a go route either, but Watson has had issues over the shoulder and Golden’s size means he needs to get a lot of separation and that means not knocked off his route at the line. That’s not a recipe for regular success. For different reasons, both Golden and Watson are actually best on deep crossers. That’s what I’d like to see more of.

As for go routes, the obvious candidate is Williams. It’s the simplest route really, he has both the size and the speed and he’d be an excellent double bluff decoy, since to date he really hasn’t been targetted at all except very rarely and close to the line of scrimmage. I don’t know if he too can’t catch over his shoulder, but, to be honest, I’d have had him doing that consistently since we drafted him.

Pennell seems to be heading to the Chiefs today for a visit. It almost seems like that was an understanding before the deed was done. The Chiefs do have a need. Something at the back of my mind keeps telling me there was some bad feeling when he left the Packers. If so, it’s possible we aren’t that attractive to him (or that my memory is deceiving me).

Why can't Golden be the go to deep threat on go routes? He has no problem tracking the ball coming straight over his head, something #9 has yet to be able to do. He has what used to be called soft he, now the cool kids say strong hands. Whatever, he can CTFB. He's also the fastest target on the team. Send him deep!

#9 can't do a go route but is great on crossers. #83 is still a developmental player, also being used in gadget plays.

Yes...but not all luck, both receivers knew they'd be a primary and adjusted really well on the fly and made great plays. Both tracked the ball in the air and the DBs defending them did not. (see K Nixon)

I want the team to play with full consistency all the time. No mistakes and no excuses. I don't care the other team is full of professional athletes we should win every down on every play. If the WR drops a pass the coach made a bad play call.

Sound about right?

Football is a game of back and forth. You can't expect to dominate every minute of every game. It just doesn't work that way. I didn't see this as a tale of two offenses. Just how the variance of playing a game with an oblong ball works. No team in the NFL is that far behind another.

"Football is a game of back and forth. You can't expect to dominate every minute of every game."

It's about throwing punches. The last couple weeks we saw that these Packers have some resilience: they can take a punch and punch back. I'd rather they were landing the first punch and still being aggressive afterward, but Arizona and Pittsburgh showed that they aren't going to crumble. Those two might not be Philly or Detroit or Buffalo--teams that work to land the first haymaker--but it's a move in the right direction.

"At halftime of this game, I was so disgusted, I ran upstairs and raided the snack cabinet. Mixed nuts, tortilla chips, granola bars, I had them all in a ten minute period,"

Based on the result, maybe this should be a new pre-game ritual?

"Jacobs"

Jacobs plays a physical game at RB. He's a big dude and should be able to handle some abuse, but he's also 27 which is getting pretty long in the tooth for a RB. He also absorbed 301 carries last season (and an additional 36 catches). When he led the league in rushing in 2022 (and had almost 400 touches) he followed that with a weaker year and missed time with injuries. Several observers said that he never looked spry that season--he also missed time in camp due to a contract dispute. In the end, the question I'm asking is "are the Packers managing his reps effectively?" At his age and with his contract, maybe you just run the legs off him...but I think we see more Emanuel Wilson (or whomever is RB2) over the second half of the season.

"Personally, if I'm the offensive coordinator, when a go route is schemed up, I'm using Watson or Golden, not Doubs. Seems obvious, but..."

Sometimes it's hard to tell in-game whether that long route to Doubs or Wicks was specifically called, or whether it was an adjustment by the receiver based on coverage. I agree, though, in that asking Wicks in particular to go long isn't a winning proposition. A mention was made of Savion Williams going long...he has the length to compete, especially on the boundary, but he's more elusive and strong than he is fast. 4.48 at the combine is pretty average for WRs...the question is whether he translates that speed to pads. With his strength, that's a real possibility. I'd rather be getting him the ball underneath on crossers and letting him make plays at this stage.

Re: Jacobs

Has there been a Lloyd sighting recently? I was excited when the Packers drafted him as he has speed/quickness that the other Packer RBs don't have. Unfortunately he has disappeared due to injury and I have no idea if he is going to return this year or ever.

It will be fascinating to watch how Savion's career unfolds. He has a similar combine speed and height to Jordy, who excelled at vertical plays. I tend to agree that he resembles Deebo more than Jordy. As they say, time will tell.

I’d be happy to see him resemble a receiver first. At this point he’s a pure gadget athlete. I’d really like to see some sign they trust him to run (and catch) on a few simple routes.

I know it would be a shame if all we ended up with is a Cordarrel Paterson type of player. He never had 52 receptions in a year and averaged 26 per year. Especially with Reed coming back soon, at this point, they don't need him to be a WR.

I think there are some similarities, but I agree that Williams looks a little more like Deebo (or even a DK Metcalf) physically. I just think he's got a ways to go between the ears.

People lose track of how prolific Nelson was at KSU. He had one (12 game) season with 122 catches, 1600 yards, and 11 TD. That's unbelievable.

Savion is here for the demo-derby Shanahan offense and return kicks. Nelson was prolific at Kansas State and a Track & Field guy. Ted was lucky again, when he fell in the order.

No and No.

Alexander the Occasional is using the same approach in Baltimore. His motivation is money now not playing and winning games.

He even said he would have played for the Packers this season if they offered him Ravens money. The Packers declined to do that for reasons that are being exposed now with the second team he rarely plays for.

I'm always going to remember the Steelers game as the "Red Bull" game. They must have had a chug or two at halftime because they FINALLY came out with some fire in their bellies.

I'm a hair concerned of a letdown facing Carolina this week. The need to keep last Sunday's second half motivation through next Sunday. It would be very embarrassing to poop the sheets against the Panthers.

Certainly, with the Eagles coming up next, this has the potential to be a trap game. I think this team learned its lesson against Cleveland—that on "any given Sunday," you can lose to an inferior team—and will be ready to take care of business against Carolina.

"I'm at about 80% yes and trending up right now."

I'm right there with you Al. Maybe a bit higher.

I have always like Love's demeanor, worth ethic, steady growth in performance and leadership. To me he's more like Bart vs Brett or Aaron.

But the age when he wins a Championship is spot on...27. The same trips around the sun as Bart, Brett, and Aaron had prior to winning a Championship.

At 80% in a 32 team league you'd have seven quarterbacks above him. Who are they?

I said a bit higher than 80%. But it is a confidence level, not Love's standing vs his contemporaries.

Looking at the NFL QBs, Mahomes, Herbert, Prescott have been consistently better, but he's gaining on them...and probably Stafford and Goff because they have played at a high level for a while.

Let's see how the season goes. If he continues to play like he did in the 3rd and 4th qtr Sunday evening, he's going to get all pro votes and MVP mention after he wins the Lombardi.

And as I expect, Love will be the 3rd QB Packer stud in a row.

No I would not. You are trying to create a narrative unrelated to the comment.

You are conflating what Al was referring to. 80% for him was a (growing) confidence level in our young, 3rd year starter, with tremendous upside and longevity for a long time.

My confidence level is higher than 80% because of his growth with that upside.

To each their own...but I understood what Al was referring to.

good response. You understand that what I wrote has absolutely nothing to do with comparing him to other quarterbacks. I have no problem with anyone who says they are 100% sure he's THE ONE right now. I'd rather give him a full season to show it before I'll go to 100%.

An interesting thought comparing Love more to Bart. IMO he’s more Farve than ARod or Bart. But, I like that Love is not throwing INT’s; an ARod/ Bart trait.

"There's still more than half a season to go, but I'm about 80% yes and feeling even more optimistic right now."

Between the latter half of Love's first year, what he's shown this year, and the times he was near full strength last year, I'm 100% confident that "he's the man." It's obvious to me at this point that some of his bad playing last year was due to his injuries. Sure, he'll make some questionable mistakes—what quarterback doesn't? Even Mahomes makes them regularly but compensates with unbelievable plays. That's exactly what Love did when he threw the ball to Watson, just over the safety's outstretched hands. He knew he could make that throw because the safety bit on another route. Another example is when he got hit but still threw to Kraft, who was in single coverage with no help nearby. With a player like Kraft, that kind of play works more often than not. The cornerback is at a huge disadvantage with their back turned to the play. The other thing I notice about Love's play is he puts the ball in the right spot for YAC most of the time. The guy is as cool as a cucumber and extremely confident in his abilities. Not sure he will be a HOF, but I'm confident he will have a long career as a starter of the Green Bay Packers.

I was so happy they signed him to an extension. It’ll be an incredible steal if he stays healthy. In my opinion, he’s our best WR. His value goes way beyond just his yards and receptions, with Reed running a close 2nd. When Reed gets back this offense will be dynamic.

I'll almost agree with you except I see #11 as our top producing WR. Champagne problems! Those 2 plus #0 on the field at the same time? Somebody's getting open, and that just might be #85 or our RB of the day, all of whom can catch.

GPG!

My observations:
The Packers pulled out all the stops for 2 games they deemed very important: The first game (Lions) and the most recent (Steelers). I would say both the coaches and players have gotten a bit lazy with the other games and have come out flat, disjointed, not really showing effort in swarming, tackling, etc.

Next week is another example of a 'lesser' team. It is up to LaFleur to hold himself and his team to consistent, higher standards as they play every team. They need to show respect to all teams, as most of them have strengths in several areas.

They have won all their home games and hope this is an indication of Home Field Advantage for the rest of the year. Plus I will be in attendance and will not let them lose! :-)

I will be surprised if they come out flat...but that depends heavily on the coaching staff.

Panthers played competitively all season until the Bills destroyed them at home last weekend to put them at 4-4. Young missed that game and part of the win over the Jets with a high ankle sprain...those can linger. He may be ready on Sunday so the Packers better be. Young is the primary reason they are improved this year.

I guess you're going to have to articulate what you mean by "pulled out all the stops" because I don't think they tried in either game to run a lot of trick plays or do very much that was out of character for the team. The energy in the opener was great, and they jumped out to an early lead. Against the Steelers they found a rhythm in the second half and executed, but I don't see either of those as pulling out all the stops.

---"Second drive, six plays and a touchdown. the key? Never had to convert a third down."

I'd argue that 6 plays/touchdown key was tempo. LaFleur got plays in off the script and they executed in a hurry. When he left the script in the first half they got ponderous. The drops didn't help.

The score would’ve been much different. If not for the missed field goal that gave Steelers good field position for their field goal score. And then the second missed field goal. that adds up to a nine point differential.

I attribute the offensive asymmetry more to LaFleur's game planning than anything else. Because the lulls seem to have become quite common - for how long now? However there appears to be a remedy in-hand. And that is the transcendence of Jordan Love.

For at least the last 2 games Love has masterfully taken control of the O - despite the first halves ineptness. His recent performances also supports the notion of a potential MVP season. However - more than anything else - I have seen that Love has become a better QB - than LaFleur as a play caller.

Raiding the cupboard tells me; that you
must see Doubs as a Love problem too.
Being cautious doesn’t fit, when he’s going deep.
And something tells me Wicks wants in.

I think it’s too early to give up on Hobbs.
But with your wanting Valentine.
Gute’s Free Agency signings were too elevated.
And he’s had too many chances to get starters.

Being committed to DL rookies has a downside.
If Gute is serious about getting to the super-Bowl.
He better get veteran help on that DL.
