Can the Packers' defense carry the team to start the 2023 season?

Team president Mark Murphy thinks they might have to.

One thing I genuinely appreciate about team president Mark Murphy is that he has zero filter when speaking with the media. In early March, he spoke about the team’s ongoing negotiations with the New York Jets surrounding quarterback Aaron Rodgers and that whole saga, which I’m sure general manager Brian Gutekunst was not the biggest fan of. The latter then presumably forced Murphy to switch gears mere weeks later by telling those in attendance at the Wisconsin Tech Summit at Lambeau Field that, with a chuckle, “I’m sworn to secrecy not to say anything” regarding the trade. He also spilled the beans just a few weeks ago in his monthly column, Murphy Take 5, by implying that the Jets would be the featured team on Hard Knocks.

Murphy, a former NFL player himself, has occasionally discussed the on-field product, and he did just that when meeting with reporters after Monday’s shareholder meeting.

Notwithstanding what we will see from quarterback Jordan Love in the first half of the season, is the defense actually capable of putting the team on their back for the first half? Under defensive coordinator Joe Barry, my answer is a simple question: who the hell knows? But for the sake of the article, let’s dig a bit deeper.

There obviously is not a true midpoint of the season now that each NFL plays 17 games, so I will dissect the first nine games – Chicago (road), Atlanta (road), New Orleans (home), Detroit (home), Las Vegas (road), Denver (road), Minnesota (home), Los Angeles Rams (home), and Pittsburgh (road).

Green Bay is afforded a little bit of rest in the first ten weeks, which should help. While they host the Lions on a short week on Thursday Night Football, they are off until the following Monday, when they play the Raiders on Monday Night Football. The team’s bye week comes the following week. Plus, the Packers will only play one playoff team from the 2022 field in the season's first nine games.

The elephant in the room is the health of edge rusher Rashan Gary, who is recovering from a torn ACL suffered in Week 9. Gary and cornerback Eric Stokes were placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list prior to the start of the team’s training camp. Gutekunst said Tuesday that they will evaluate Gary in the next two to three weeks, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky. To put it bluntly, the Packers need Gary at, or close to, full strength because the team’s pass rush took a significant dip in his absence last season as the Packers ranked 28th in the percentage of pass-rush snaps resulting in a pressure. With Gary in action, they ranked second.

While the Bears added wide receiver D.J. Moore in the offseason, the jury is still out on whether Justin Fields can be more than a running quarterback. The Ohio State product finished 2022 with a passing success rate of 38.7%, which ranked 360th out of the 384 qualified quarterback seasons (minimum of 300 pass attempts) since 2012, according to TruMedia (h/t Nate Tice).

The Falcons’ bruising rushing attack will be a good early test for the Packers’ rush defense in Week 2. Atlanta drafted running back Bijan Robinson, who accumulated almost 1,900 yards from scrimmage to go along with 20 total touchdowns during his junior season at Texas, with the eighth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Robinson is one part of what should be a formidable duo with Tyler Allgeier, a 1,000-yard back from a season ago. Both will be utilized heavily in a run game that was third in Rush DVOA in 2022.

The Raiders and Saints both have new quarterbacks under center – Jimmy Garapollo and Derek Carr, respectively. Will Raiders running back Josh Jacobs be able to duplicate his 2022 production when he rushed for a league-leading 1,653 yards? If so, will the Packers be able to keep him in check?

The Broncos have a new head coach, Sean Payton. Will the Super Bowl-winning head coach be able to turn quarterback Russell Wilson and that offense around? The unit ranked 29th in Total DVOA in 2022.

What does the Vikings’ offense look like without running back Dalvin Cook and wide receiver Adam Thielen? In six starts in place of Cook, Alexander Mattison, the team’s new starting running back, produced 117 carries for 477 yards and five touchdowns, an average of 79.5 rushing yards per game. He also added 216 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

I expect the Rams to be better relative to last year’s 5-12 record, but the team does not have a formidable No. 2 wide receiver behind Cooper Kupp, and running back Cam Akers has proved to be too inconsistent thus far in his career.

How will Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett fare in his second year? He showed some flashes as a starter last year, particularly in the second half (five touchdowns and one interception in the last seven games). However, he still finished 32nd in passer rating (76.7) among qualified gunslingers, only ahead of New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson.

And finally, the Lions have received quite a bit of hype after a surprising 2022 season. They will be without wide receiver Jameson Williams for the first six games due to a suspension, but they added dynamic running back Jahmyr Gibbs via the draft and bruising running back David Montgomery via free agency. Will their offense be as good, if not better, than last year to start the season? They finished fifth in DVOA in 2022.

The Packers’ defense, as you may recall, struggled rather mightily to start the season in 2022, only to pick things up toward the end against ho-hum offenses. The first nine games are not exactly murderer’s row. Will they be able to pick up where they left off and rise up to the occasion while the offense presumably works out the kinks with a first-year starting quarterback? They just might have to if the team wants to stay above water to start the 2023 campaign.

Can the defense do it? Sure. Will they? I don't think so. I think Barry sucks. I think his coaching staff sucks. I think our safeties suck. I expect a rough road the first 2 months of the season with a .500 at best record.

Bearmeat, last year, we gave up 72 points in the first four games. If this year's team holds their first four opponents to 72 points (18 ppg), then would you describe that a "sucking"?

.500 at midseason would still have us in contention for the division title. It's called average, not sucky.

You think Barry sucks, and his staff sucks, and the safeties suck, and yet it was one of the best pass defenses in the league. Can you reconcile these facts for me?

Stop with this. There's this thing called DVOA that adjust for who you're playing. 72 would be the max I'd expect a talented D to give up given their 1st four opponents this year.

BTW the Packers are dead last in EPA per rush since Gutey took over as GM. I know you love to spout how much easier it is to pass than run so they should invite teams to run but does it matter if it was a run or pass if it's 2nd and 4? No it doesn't. If you have a good pass defense you want teams to try and pass. If you suck at run defense they might not have to, see Eagles 2022. Stop the run on 1st down and you have the offense playing into your strong suit.

They were also 28th in DVOA per play, run and pass, last year. You can call that a success if you want to, I'd call it losing football.

The worst part about keeping Barry was the Vikings hired a DC that's much better at getting the most out of lesser talent. Barry does well at getting less out of greater talent. The fact they didn't even explore hiring Flores tells me LaFleur didn't want a fiery guy that might disagree with him on how soft the team is. Maybe he learns a lesson this year but I have a feeling they'll be a soft team as long as he's HC and wants to hire buddies.

Yay, average...ish is so awesome...ish

When the Packers dominated in the 60's they weren't average. The '96 Packers weren't average. The 2010 run the Packers went on in the playoffs wasn't average.

Average...ish in the NFL is bs. It's what defines the Vikings and their fans settle for.

That is true about the pass defense, 6th in DVOA. The issue is explosive run plays. You can live with a team getting 4,5,6 yard runs here and there. But they were giving up 20, 40 yards WAY to often, 31st in the league. IDL is one the bigger needs. Devonte Wyatt is the XFactor this season imo. He needs to make that jump be a reliable 3 down DL. We need to able to atleast redirect a RB, Far too often last year, RBs got to a hole quickly and to the second level with ease untouched.

Bure, you totally nailed this. Rushing against the Packers last year was easy. “Explosive runs” are indicative of problems at all 3 levels of the Packers defense.

Teams ran away from Kenny Clark, ran away from De’Vondre Campbell and could care less about our CBs & Safeties. THAT’s a lot of holes.

Add in a perfect storm of Amos losing his wheels, Gary & Stokes suffering Week 9 season ending injuries, Savage regressing further, Quay being a rookie making rookie mistakes, Devonte Wyatt & Jonathan Ford held back for development, and Barry using mostly Quarters, Quarter Quarter Half and Cover 3 = disaster.

Those coverages are great, cutting edge, BUT can be beaten badly in the running game if you don’t have a deep roster or suffer injuries, and that’s exactly what happened.

A huge influx of players who have run stop strengths are now competing for positions.

GOOD!

58.9 and 56.2. Those are the run stop grades by PFF of Rudy Ford and Darnell Savage in 2022.

BAD!

Dean Lowry’s Run D grade was 56.7… Savage’s Run D grades were even worse in 2021 and 2019. He proved he can run stop in 2020, when his run D grade bounced up to 65.8.

In fairness, Savage played with numerous injuries over the past two seasons.

I think our D overall will be much better this year if the Packers continue ditching players who aren’t measuring up in favor of those who are better fits and outright win the jobs this TC.

Raise the bar.

This was a nice article. I agree that Murphy doesn't have much of a filter, but I also think people read too much into what he says some times because they are FANatics.

The 17 game season doesn't break up as nicely as the 16 game season, but I try to look at the season as four, 4 game quarters. The 17th game then is either an insignifcant bye week or it's a game you have to win for the playoffs, or to improve your seed.

So, in that spirit, I look at our first four games @Chicago, @Atlanta, Saints, Lions. Last year,in our first four games, we held opponents to 72 points in the first four, so I'm assuming that "carrying the team" would have to be better than that, because we all know how terrible our defense was last year, right?

I think our offense is going to score more points in the first four games than they did last year, when they scored 75.

Last season, we started slowly, partly because we were missing some blockers, and partly because our QB and WRs weren't very sharp. We still went 3-1, beating the best rushing team in the league, beating a playoff team on their field, and winning in overtime against the Cheatriots.

My prediction: We'll score 30 against the Bears, we'll struggle, but compete and maybe win in Atlanta. We'll win our home opener and we'll beat the Lions on the short week. I see us at least 3-1, 2-0 in the division, and in first place after our 4th game.

LOL, I don't think a lot of people are enamored with Murphy's "zero filter". Sure, he has a right to express his opinion in an official capacity, but why not just leave it to those who are actively in charge of the on-field product?

With Gary out, it will be up to Barry to find out what works best in relatively short order. We drafted three guys with pass rush potential and we have another prospect in Cox who might make the team. How long it takes them to make an impact is anyone's guess, but the opportunity will be there. Maybe the penny defense will be utilized more often like it was in 2021 now that we have some younger and more athletic players on the DL; Campbell was good patrolling the middle, but now we have the option of using Quay on the outside as well. Also, the run defense was much better with Slaton and Wyatt playing alongside each other vs. other combinations that are no longer with the team.

Some of the keys to the defense NOT having to carry the team include the OL keeping Love's jersey clean and creating holes for Jones; hitting Watson in stride when the opportunity arises; Nixon continuing to give us good field position via returns; MLF being more adaptable and imaginative with play-calling.

It would be different if he had an IDGAF type attitude when he says things that probably shouldn't be said. The problem is he comes across as a yes guy that just doesn't think that much rather than an A type personality.

I agree Splitpea, if Wyatt and Slaton make noticeable progress from last season and if our rookie defensive players play near what we got from last years group, we can easily be top 10 or better.

"One thing I genuinely appreciate about team president Mark Murphy is that he has ..." less than 2 years to go before he must retire (oh and and not a gray hair on his head, nothing phoney about Murphy).

The Packers defense carrying the team in 2023 is about as likely as the Pack winning those multiple Super Bowl victories between 2022-2024 that Murphy promised Packer fans last summer when his retirement was announced.

Being a senior member of society I have to remind you that gray hair is not a given for people past 60. For example, I have passed the retirement age without a single gray hair on my head(or elsewhere).

When Murphy made the statement about Super Bowls he assumed superhero Aaron Rodgers would be around. I guess losing in key games was Murphy's fault and not His Darkness.

18 months ago Murphy predicted Rodgers would win his 4th MVP and led the charge to throw 100 million of cap at him. Now, we avoided all but 40 of that and have no Rodgers. We do still have Barry. I will put as much faith in Murphy’s predictions as that suggests is deserved.

Let him go make the Pack money he’s great at that, just don’t be the straw that stirs the drink leader they need! Yeh the next guy could be worse…I’ll live with that possibility!

Theoretically with eight first round draft picks there should be enough talent, unless Gute is totally incompetent. So unless someone who’s name rhymes with…Joe Barry…comes in and strategically tries to fit a square peg in a round hole and force them to fits his philosophy vs playing to a group’s make up, they should be just fine. I’m hopeful but NOT optimistic 😢

All anyone can base this speculation on is what happened last year. One thing is abundantly clear: no one knows how changes that naturally occur in each team will affect the outcome.

If everything stayed the same every year we would only see the Chiefs and Bengals in the Super Bowl for several more years. One thing that is very clear is the Super Bowl runner up often bombs the next year. Why? Changes. The Packers won the first two Super Bowls but very few teams have done it since then. Why? There's a great deal of change each year both within the winners and the contenders.

The one thing concerning the Packers defense is very clear: they must play better for the Packers to remain in contention. Even if the offense slowly improves, getting blown out by opponents will not lead to much except a high draft pick.

I don't like Barry's defense. It's way too passive. But Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst also know that when Murphy retires and the new regime comes in they had better have a winning program or they likely will be out. I suspect the expectations for Barry will be amped up. He has the talent on defense and he must get it out of them. The players know this also. They're all playing for their jobs, be it as players or coaches. That gives you a little bit more incentive.

In addition the Aaron Rodgers circus has moved to the Big Apple, may we count our blessings, and the team will be able to focus on clear on the field objectives.

"" . One thing that is very clear is the Super Bowl runner up often bombs the next year. Why? Changes."

And luck. Plain dumb luck. Luck with officiating, luck with health, luck with the bounce of the ball. Luck with the weather, or the schedule, or the relative health of your opponent that week. You have to have the other ingredients, but you don't win a Super Bowl without some luck.

Isn't it obvious?

Murphy will be the dumping ground for blame for the next couple seasons until he retires.

Barry will deflect some by his poor track record and ability to take blame.

Next - maybe DBak because of his huge salary, the guy making the most money is supposed to carry everyone else, right?

Then perhaps the fans in Lambeau. If they would scream like teen girls at a justin timberlake show then MLF wouldn't have to do the flapp-a-doodle which distracts him and keeps him from implementing the needed adjustments that all the fans watching at home can see clearly after the fact.

In a couple years the blame can be placed on Leroy Butler, wasn't his inclusion on the BOD supposed to make the franchise unbeatable? It must be his lack of a wall in the meeting room to jump on that has failed to inspire the BOD.

Pile on folks, there is always room for more blame.

Interesting comment nygary. I say that because all I hear about Kenny Clark is that he needs help. Is that because he is not a difference maker and cannot stuff the run like Ryan Pickett and BJ Raji? I hate to pick on KC because he was a wrestler growing up but we never hear about him stuffing the run or sacking the QB. Where's the Grave Digger when you need him!

The less Murphy speaks about anything related to football operations...the better.

Plus he's a horrible speaker, he tries to be funny, then chuckles at his own jokes when no one else thinks it's funny.

He's painful to watch.
************
So the Packers are going with Musgrave, Tucker, Deguara and Davis at tight end.

Then for wr's they have, 'veterans' Watson, Doubs, and Toure, then....Melton, Chrest, Heath, Wicks, and some dude named Cotton.

On top of all that they are going with a QB to start his first season with this crew of mostly rookies or 1st year players who are still trying to prove they belong in this league?

Forgive me if i'm not full of optimism and chugging the kool aid.

You would think....that after sitting for 3 years the Packers could provide Love with better tools than this in his first season.

I'm not saying good players cant develop out of this bunch.
What i'm saying is......
Not only does Love need to prove himself, but all his help needs to prove themselves also. Even Deguara and Davis.

This is why Murphy is spouting off how the defense needs to come to the rescue, it's because the tight end room and the wr room has been depleted to next to nothing.
Hence why Gute has been scrambling in the last 2 drafts picking 8 pass catchers.

I didn't like the move in 2020 trading up for Love, nor did i like upper management's mismanagement of that whole situation.

But i never faulted Love, it wasn't his fault.

Murphy is completely wrong on Love.
He deserves more than a half season with all the inexperienced tools he's been given.
He deserves the full season, maybe even longer.

Shame on Gute for putting this kid in this position.
Starting in the NFL is hard enough.
But to do it with players that need to prove they even belong there, at the same time Love has to prove himself...is a disservice to Love.

I want to say that in some fashion...Love is set up to fail.
Good luck to Love, he is going to need it.

I'll end it with this....
If Love somehow succeeds and becomes a proven NFL starting QB, it's only because he's earned it, and God bless him if that happens.

The obvious answer is NO! They were supposed to carry the team last year after we lost DA17 and had all new receivers. They had 1st rd picks on all three levels of the defense but failed to produce. Is it the players or the coaching? We have many 1st round picks and high RAS athletes but the defense still disappoints.

Coaches make a huge difference! Look no further than knee biting Dan Campbell and the sorry Lions!

Don't worry about the results all that much in 2023. They know they aren't making the playoffs. If they thought they had a winner they would have spread the hit for Rodgers over 2 years and gone FA shopping. They decided to take the hit all this year and run with the young kids.

It will be baptism by fire for the young group. Just about everyone outside of outside of RB, Bahk and Jenkins the offense is all question marks. Watson and Doubs look the part but they have proven nothin yet. Myers needs to rebound and everyone from the center over shouldn't feel comfortable.

The defense should be better unless Barry is truly a stubborn fool. The pieces are there and I feel ill that we have one of the few coaches that routinely shown he can't put it together. I don't bash coaching often but this guy as appeared clueless at times.

This year is about seeing what young guys can be corner stones for the future. I wouldn't be shocked if Clark or Bahk weren't moved before the deadline. Both are past their prime and they could garner some draft capital. Jets just cleared out some room that could be used on a LT as they can't hit in the draft there. Clark can still ball so he could maybe fetch a 2nd. I would look to move on any asset over 27 or 28 to build for the future.

I'm 100% onboard with the "Who the hell knows?" feeling. Under Barry, we've had a knack for making bad QBs and bad offenses look great, so it's more than a little frightening that we face a mostly mediocre slate of offenses to start the season. Rest assured that at least a couple of them are going to put up season best games against the Barry-fense. The frustrating part, as always, is we have the talent to be a top 10 defense.

I would argue that over the ARod era, this was a defense predicated mostly on winning track meets and supporting an offense that was expected to be more efficient and productive than its opponent's -- a front-runner defense. Even still, the defense was very average in 2022, and an offense that was very average also wasn't enough to keep this from being a very average team.

There are two big “IFS” here.

The first is Barry as the DC. I share the concerns everyone has posted here and won’t repeat it.

The second big “IF” is Gary and his return to the field following the ACL tear. I know they want him back for the first game and this is where my concern is. Assuming he’s ready, I hope they rotate him in the way he was when the Smith brothers were starting. Play him situationally so he can play back to full strength and reduce the risk of another injury.

I think they want Gary back as soon as possible, but he's likely to be on a pitch count when he returns. They have Enagbare, Hollins and Van Ness to soak up snaps, but might still need to manufacture pressure. A couple reports out there that the Packers hope he (and Stokes) will be activated prior to the end of camp, but I wouldn't be surprised if he stays on the PUP and they nurse him along until he's eligible to return.

Will the D carry the O in the first few months? It would be an unexpected result, that is for certain. The best indicator of future performance are past results.

Joe Barry has been given 6 seasons and 3 teams' defenses to coach, failed, and was fired from two of the teams. He should have been fired last year, especially with outstanding DCs available like Flores. MLF seems to be a very timid man when it comes to upgrading his staff.

It is more likely the new look Packer O will carry the D and maybe Barry will be bye bye by mid season.

I do continue to hope Bicassia will be in every meeting and planning session of the defense as Assist. HC as the HC obviously isn't involved.

Talent is not the concern on the D. It is the DC and assistants that keep trying to shoehorn players into roles and formations than ignores their individual core strengths and actually expose their weakness! It's the goofiest thing I have seen from a Packer DC.

They are going to have to show me. Pretty much the same guys as the last year and half. Big questions with Gary, Stokes, the safeties, and the run defense. They look good on paper, but….

I will give the defense a fighting chance. Just be better than the beginning of last year and they will have an improvement. But I doubt they will carry the team. All I ask is just be better stopping the run.

Questions on the D-line and at safety dont bode well for the outlook of this defense. Will new blood on the D line play more to Barry's style and help firm up the run? Will Barry be able to coach up Savage and the rest of the JAG's at safety so they can rotate/disguise coverage's? Will the safeties be able to read their run fits and play the right gaps to help stop the run when needed? For safeties in the vic fangio style of defense both aspects are a huge part of it. I could see the D line playing the run better but having good gap disipline from the D line isnt gonna matter if u dont have the safeties doing the same. This could be a long and frustrating year in more ways than one if teams just run the ball down the packers throat and leave Love on the bench twiddling his thumbs. I would like to see it happen but I feel that the Packers were healthier, more talented and more experienced last year so its hard to see it happening this year. Also are we gonna see the CB position play worse now that Gray is coaching in ATL??? Nobody really seems to be worried about that, justifiably since CB wasnt a position of weakness to anybody. Then again if the CB's underwhelm are people really gonna be shocked and surprised that we have under utilized potential at another position in a Joe Barry defense? We're heading into year 3 of the Joe Barry defense and the only thing that anybody knows is that Joe Barry is a good LB's coach.
