Bo Melton Pushing for Packers Roster Spot
Melton has a real chance to emerge from Green Bay's crowded wide receiver room.
By markoldacres

The wide receiver room in Green Bay is chock full of young, talented pass catchers, most of whom are Packers draft picks from the last two years.
But as training camp and the battle for roster spots heat up, a former Seattle Seahawks draft pick in Bo Melton has been turning heads.
Melton was selected by the Seahawks with the 229th pick in the 2022 NFL draft, with the former Rutgers receiver taken 29 slots before the Packers drafted Samori Toure.
A four-star recruit coming out of Cedar Creek High School, Melton chose Rutgers over offers from some of the top college football programs in the country, including Michigan and Ohio State.
He was never a high-volume receiver at Rutgers. Melton’s career highs for yards and touchdowns came in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, when he put up 707 all-purpose yards and had eight scores.
Melton used the extra year of eligibility granted to 2020 seniors due to the pandemic and returned in 2021 for his senior year before entering the NFL.
The pre-draft process, and specifically the athletic testing, is where Melton really helped his prospects of being selected, posting an impressive 9.23 Relative Athletic Score (RAS) on a 0-10 scale compared to wide receivers who had previously tested.
The highlight was an ‘elite’ speed score, with Melton running the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds, but the wideout also posted ‘good’ scores for agility and explosion.
After being drafted by the Seahawks and failing to crack the 53-man roster, Melton spent most of his rookie season on the practice squad, before the Packers poached him in December 2022 and added him to their active roster.
Making that same roster for the 2023 season, up against a now crowded wide receiver group, will be a challenge, but Melton has staked his claim during the early part of camp.
Melton caught a touchdown pass from Alex McGough in the red zone period on day two, running a slant to get open for the score, but he really began to make some noise when the one on ones started.
On day five of camp, Melton faced Kiondre Thomas, a corner who sits further down the depth chart, in what turned out to be a total mismatch, as he won all three reps.
The next day, he beat Innis Gaines twice in the same drill, before catching a 35-yard touchdown pass from Danny Etling after beating Carrington Valentine, who himself has enjoyed a strong start to camp.
He was overthrown by Etling later in the two-minute drill, having edged in front of Corey Ballentine, and faced stiffer competition in the one on ones in practice number seven.
Melton enjoyed a back-and-forth battle with Keisean Nixon, shaking him twice but failing to haul in a high pass on one of those occasions, with Nixon also winning a rep.
In two-minute, Melton saw some time with the first team and caught a pass on a slant from Jordan Love to pick up a 1st down.
With the twos, he dropped a pass but instantly bounced back to convert on 3rd down, grabbing a Sean Clifford pass which went for 15 yards, before catching another pass later in the drive which ended in a touchdown.
There is plenty of competition for Melton as he aims for a place on the 53-man roster, with Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Grant DuBose and Samori Toure all draft picks from 2022 or 2023, and another 5 undrafted wideouts to battle against.
DuBose is yet to practice this training camp, which could give Melton a leg up, as could the potential fear from Brian Gutekunst that he could get stolen from Green Bay’s practice squad, just as they took him from Seattle.
But beyond that, Melton’s performance on the field so far have got him noticed and will have placed him squarely in the mind of the Packers GM as he evaluates the roster.

If he keeps making plays then it should be hard to leave him out. Play over draft status. It seems to me that, like Vallentine on D, he has been more than most.

it seems as though the talk about who makes the 53 discusses very good players this year.
In previous years, seemed like a question of who's less bad?
Nice to finally have potentially many playmakers.
Let the competition sort it. No sacred cows. Best man wins and on to Chicago.

Man I really hope it's not an either or between Ty Goodson and Bo Melton as I really want both guys to make the team this year and have a role within the offense. If I have to choose between them though, I would go with Goodson because of his ability to play in the slot if needed.
Either guy can fill the gadget role, play in the slot and contribute on teams. I want their playmaking ability and speed over the likes of Taylor or even Heath at this point but I have to admit Heath has been pretty impressive since he was signed.
Patrick Taylor doesn't impress me at all. Don't care how consistent he is at the little things, I will take Goodson's explosiveness and versatility over him everytime.
The games will certainly help decide who sticks but I hope they continue to emphasize youth, speed and playmaking ability over guys like Taylor who might be the better choice with a veteran team led by Rodgers. This year should be about picking the best young players to grow along with our new starting QB for the future.

NN, MLF is pretty clear that RB #3 has to contribute in ways other than running with the ball. I agree Goodson looks fun as an explosive gadget player but can he hold his own in pass pro and ST? #31 Wilson is our Biggest RB after Quadzilla, with Nichols or Taylor after that. Goodson is the smallest, so for him to contribute significantly on pass pro would be very impressive.
Not sure why you'd compare Goodson to Melton to make the final roster? Although personally I like the strategy of starting with 4 RBs and 4 TEs, intending to swap out 2 or 3 for more WRs later in the season as our O uses them more. Although I don't expect to see that happen.

I made the correlation because last year GB only kept 2 RBs on the 53 man roster so they could roster 7 WRs. Melton would almost certainly be one of the 7 this year but I would rather they go with 6 WRs so they can carry 3 RBs this year instead.
I would still keep Melton as one of the 6 but understand that last spot will be a battle between Melton, Heath and 2023 draft pick Dubose if he ever gets healthy.
As far as Goodson's size is concerned he's almost identical in height and weight to Aaron Jones and that guy can pass block with the best of them so I don't see his size being an issue there. I still can't say if he's any good at it or not, haven't seen them ask him to do it much.
LaFleur says he wants that 3rd RB to do more than just run the ball. Well of the 4 guys competing for that 3rd RB spot, Goodson has the best hands, runs the best routes and frankly is best suited for the Tyler Irvin like gadget role.
Now I realize Reed, Watson and Melton can all play that role as well but Goodson is the only guy that I believe could adequately replace Aaron Jones should he miss any time due to injury.
Thats why I choose Goodson over Melton, if it comes to that but I prefer to keep both guys if possible.

Agreed that Goodson is similar to #33 in role, but they're listed as 11# apart at the same height. That could translate into a substantial difference in toughness and functional strength.
More talent than you can squeeze into a 53 man roster is a good problem to have!

Sic,
I want to see how the players show in the preseason games before making a final determination, but based on everything to this point I'd like to see both Melton & Goodson make the team somehow. There are going to be some very difficult decisions at cut down time at a number of positions. A few positions they might go a little light for the 53, and at other positions they may go heavy to protect talent such as OT, WR, Edge, or CB. Do we want to make sure young fringe players like maybe R. Walker, C. Jones, B. Cox, or maybe J. Ford make the 53? Players who can play several positions have value and might free up an extra spot on the 53 for the aforementioned players to make the team. Personally, a talent like Goodson (let's see in pre-season) if not on 53 will never make it to the PS. Might Goodson be able to periodically play slot with his receiving talent (yes), which might allow another player to make the 53.

"Speed kills."
I love the idea of having all 4 of our WRs with 4.3x speed running routes on the same play :) Done sparingly and in the right situations I think somebody gets open ...

Tell that to Jordan Addison and his shiny new Lambourghini.

Thank You Mark for the update on Bo Melton who is arguably in the mix for being in the top four if not top three. What is it people do not like about him? His blazing speed? He would be the fastest player on the field. Maybe his explosiveness? He gets open and catches the ball. Moreover, he is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.. That is his job and he seems to be doing it well. Put him on the practice squad and he will be gone instantly. I see him battling for the slot with Reed and Toure. What position he plays is a really nice problem to have. At the very least a backup for Christian Watson. Speed can not be coached or developed. With Bo the Packers will most likely have the fastest group of receivers in the league. That's a good start. Love could not ask for more.

Bo is our fastest WR. I'm not sure he's a good backup to #9, but for #11 he's as perfect a match as they come making for a very easy substitute.
Doubs had 10 drops last year and continues with more. I'm not sure Toure should be ahead of Doubs but I can see Melton, easily. Melton Watson Reed Chrest all have 4.3x speed, in that order. Would be amazing to have them all running routes on the same play :)

Agreed WD!
Had watched Melton's game tape prior to the 2022 draft and was pretty impressed. When Gutey poached him from Seattle I was very excited. However, no one beat the drum harder for Bo at CCTV than GG. Be fun to watch how everything plays out on cut down day. In past years at cut down Packer fans (me included) always think we have more talent at WR than we actually do. Then no team poach's our WR's on the PS. The difference this year is if anything I believe we might actually have more young talent at WR than even the most ardent fan might realize.

If nothing else, Bo has speed and you just can't teach speed. I am a prime example of a person was wasn't blessed with good speed and as hard as I tried to increase it, I failed miserably.

Very Funny TK. That pedal has cost me more than tickets to a Super Bowl over the years. BTW, I ride a Harley Road King Classic; what do you have between your legs (and I'm not talking dirty)?

TK, the Wide Glide is one of the best looking Harley's and handles well to boot.
I used to do some hill climbing, but I was getting too aggressive and felt that I was eventually going to get hurt with the bike going back over the top and me trying to kick it clear. Anymore, I'm just a plain old road jockey, but I will admit, I do love that wind in my face.

Kindred, my friend!
PS I think the skinny 21 really sets it apart. Does the current lineup even have one? Don’t think so. Don’t think they’ve had a bike with a 21 in years!

With a few exceptions (like Randy Moss), great receivers rely on route running, not speed--Jerry Rice--4.71, Larry Fitzgerald--4.63, Davante Adams--4.53, DeAndre Hopkins--4.56, the list goes on and on. There's enough fast receivers coming out of college that they're largely a commodity, they don't make much of an impact, and they don't stick around long. Maybe they make some exciting plays in practice and a handful of catches in an entire season, but that's about it. For a lot of the final roster spots, the deciding factor is whether they can contribute on special teams.

Gotta have hands, gotta run good routes, release off the line, etc. But having a guy (or multiple guys) able to take the top off makes the D play differently. It all works in concert, IMO. (Or is it fact?)
