Around the NFC North: 2025 Week 16

These are the times that try men's souls.

It's games like this that make you want to blaspheme against the football gods. How does it happen? The Packers dominated the Bears for two games and ended at a net 0 thanks to some 2014 NFC Championship game-level BS.

Gary Bears

The Bears somehow beat the Packers, 22-16.

Game Notes

  • We were up 9 on the top team in the AFC and then Micah Parsons tore his acl, Evan Williams sprained his MCL, Jordan Love got concussed on a dirty hit, Romeo Doubs muffed an onsides kick, Keisan Nixon gave up two easy TDs, Malik Willis fumbled a snap (and missed a wide open Christian Watson for a TD) and now five NFC teams have clinched the playoffs and the Packers aren't one of them. Why do we even watch this sport?
  • Anyway, this was another very meh game from Caleb Williams, where he made like three plays, and they were the only ones that mattered. What a pain in the ass playing against him is. Williams was 19/34 for 250 yards and two TDs. Who knows what his stat line would've been if the football gods hadn't forsaken us and one of the three picks he threw had been caught. Ugh.
  • Without Luther Burden and Rome Odunze, completed five passes for 97 yards to DJ Moore, with 46 of them coming on the game-winning TD in overtime.
  • The Bears didn't really run all over the Packers this time. You can only really say they moved the ball consistently on the ground on a drive or two. They still put together 150 yards on 26 carries.
  • The Bears defense was fine but not great. They gave up 192 rush yards and Malik Willis was 9/11 for 121 yards and a TD after he came in. The big thing here is that the Packers had several red zone trips without a TD and it just didn't matter that we outplayed the Bears for 56 minutes. You can call it luck, and I will.

Vikings

The Vikings beat the Giants, 16-13.

Game Notes

  • Remember when Max Brosmer played one game and was the worst QB in NFL history? In this game, he played in relief of JJ McCarthy (who was bad and then got hurt) and completed 7/9 passes for 52 yards. Not world-beating, but maybe better than McCarthy again.
  • The bigger story is that Aaron Jones had 21 carries for 80 yards after Jordan Mason got hurt. Justin Jefferson added 85 yards on six catches. The former best wide receiver in the league needs 83 yards to get to a 1,000 on the year, and it is questionable that he'll do it. Obviously, a big part of that is horrific quarterback play, but true Hall of Fame receivers reach 1,000 yards in their prime. Mike Evans did it like 17 times in a row.
  • On the defensive side, Blake Cashman had an incredible 16 tackles. Are the Vikings wasting Cashman's prime?
  • Former Packer Eric Wilson and former Badger Andrew van Ginkel had sacks. Remember when the Badgers had players who could record NFL stats?

Lions

The Lions lost in insane fashion to Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers, 29-24.

Game Notes

  • The Lions had five goal-to-go opportunities in the last thirty seconds of this game to win; they scored two touchdowns and lost. On the first touchdown, a pick play was called for offensive pass interference. ON the second, thre sun god two-hand shoved the corner off, caught the pass, but not in the end zone, and lateralled to Goff, who dove in for a TD. That was rightfully called OPI as well and ended the game. Seven NFL teams haven't had an OPI call this whole season. We're 15 games in! Truly a psychotic result.
  • The Lions didn't really deserve to win this game anyway - they went down 12 with 6 minutes left and 481 yards to 361. Only one NFC North team gets to have an unearned lucky win each week it seems.
  • The QB match-up was interesting. Aaron Rodgers had 266 yards but it took 41 attempts. Goff had an alarming 54 attempts and ended up with 366 yards. Interestingly, they had the same yards per attempt passing. In perhaps the most shocking stat line of the season, the Steelers had 230 rush yards and the Lions had 15 (total). This Dan Campbell play-calling thing is a wild ride.
  • Steelers receiver got into an altercation with a Lions fan during the game that caused him to be suspended for two games. You can't really tell if Metcalf punched the fan but he definitely grabbed him by the wig. Reportedly, the fan was shouting out DK's full name. Metcalf says that the fan used multiple slurs during the incident.

Have to win the ones in front of you.

Lions-Vikings on Christmas day for last place. Poetic justice?

Now all we need is for the Bears to find their rightful place.

McCarthy has been ruled out. Not sure if that is a positive or a negative at this point.

We have two games remaining, and if we win them both, we're in the playoffs. I know some people feel entitled to win a Super Bowl every couple of years, but IMO, if you can be in the hunt at this point, with your destiny in your own hands, that's about as much as you have a right to hope for.

As I'm looking at the end of this season, and what 2026 might hold, I think the Packers and Bears are clearly going to be very good next year. Minnesota....has no QB; let's start with that. KOC may be a great coach, but this is going to be his 4th straight year without a playoff win. I'm curious to see how much longer they'll stick with him.

Detroit is looking up at the Bears and Packers. Their QB isn't getting any younger. Despite a strong offense, they're barely keeping their heads above water and will probably miss the playoffs.

Green Bay is without a first round pick, but they have good veterans under contract for next year at most positions. They can make a few financial moves and bring back most of the team, and that would mean resigning Walker and Enagbare on defense. Everybody else is covered. On offense, I expect that they'll let Walker leave, put Morgan at LT, resign Rhyan, and release Jenkins. They'll look for offensive linemen in the draft on Day 2 and Day 3. Wilson and Willis will leave in FA, and that's too bad, because they're some really good players. We'll still be able to be involved in FA.

It's not a problem until it's a problem.

I'd like to think that just about every HC is prepared in some way--keeping a list of contingencies/possibilities--to replace poached assistant coaches. I wouldn't be surprised if they promote DeMarcus Covington. If Hafley is picked, it will likely be early in the coaching cycle, which will give the Packers a chance to quickly find a successor.

Should keep Hafley even if that requires making him HC.

Getting rid of one of the winningest coaches in league history in order to keep a DC with one year in the league seems like kind of a crazy plan.

No. I don't know how many HC vacancies there'll be, and I don't know if Hafley will be at the top of any of those lists. He's had one year in the NFL, he did a good job for us but he had a lot of talent to work with, too.

Win this next game and GB is in the playoffs. Win both while the Bears lose both and GB is back to the #2 or #3 seed and hosting a playoff game.

Considering the Packers more recent home playoff record, do we really want to play in GB?

Let's get there first. Not looking forward to a desperate Ravens team. I'm most concerned about the Vikings game. Either could be a classic "MLF didn't have his team ready" trap game.

LOL, the Gary Bears...Can you think of a better use for Gary? It's been a very long time since I passed through there, but it's a perfect place to get the bulldozers out and build something useful.

What to do if DK Metcalf punches you: https://x.com/mldiffley/status/2002872479845327356?s=20https://x.com

The Packers "control their own destiny" as far as making the playoffs is concerned. Detroit is their only threat if they should lose both remaining games and the Lions win theirs. So, as peculiar as it is to root for the purple we will want that this week in any case.

I have not seen anything as the Packers making moves on QB or TE. I doubt Love will be playing. I think Willis will play. They need to do something with TE as they have Musgrave and two PS TEs.

Odd to think #2 will be ready and JL10 not. It's not disclosed how serious his shoulder injury is but it's not nothing, and those usually take time. Frequently players return from a concussion the next week, it's happened 46% of the time.

Shocked to hear the Bears don't coach to hit using their helmets and/or attacking the head and neck area of their opponents. They were called for four such penalties in the most recent game and Booker will likely be heavily fined since his two were on Love with the crown of the helmet. The other two - the game opener where Melton's head was grabbed and twisted after the whistle had blown and the shot to Willis' head as he was sliding didn't even warrant a mention, I guess.

Sweat will also likely be fined for pile driving Willis to the ground using his entire weight, even though it was missed completely by the officials and the announcers. At the end of that hit, both of Sweat's feet and arms were completely off the ground and Willis had an injured shoulder to match the concussion provided to Love. If called, GB would have 10 seconds left and the ball at their own 42 so still would have needed another 15 yards to even try a 60-yard FG .

Seems like their philosophy is to cross the line all the time and hope the refs don't call them all.

He was fined a measly $5k for each and says he's appealing to cut it in half.

Much was made of AR12 (8) not being able to get along with DK Metcalf. Well he did, but now he's suspended for the rest of the regular season?

Lol, big brain move there

For all the talk the past couple of years of the Packers acquiring Metcalf it's a good thing they didn't now.

Nixon prevailed with int and then DJ prevailed with TD in OT due to uncalled holding which prevented sack. If not for holding, pass would not have even happened.

Strong talk for team that won twice in ten years ... only due to starting QB playing less than half of each game. Back QB almost won two games .... not sure that would have worked if situation was reversed!!
