Around the NFC North: 2024 Week 18
These are the times that try men's souls.
By Mike Price

1-5. It's hard to believe the Packers could possibly have gone 1-5 in the division this season. Especially with all the crowing I've been doing in this space. Of course, it's a very fluky 1-5. On one end, the one win was because of a blocked field goal in the final seconds. On the other, four of the five losses were by a combined nine points and the Packers held the best offense in football to 17 points in the other loss. Even weirder, the Packers didn't have another loss in the United States.
Vikings and Lions
The Lions embarrassed the Vikings in this one, 31-9.
Game Notes
- Interestingly this was the biggest point differential in a division game this season. The Lions narrowly beat the Bears in both match-ups and Packers in one but killed the Vikings in this game. The Vikings sort of got a taste for what it was like to be the Packers in an NFC North game this season. The refs weren't calling anything on the Lions' defensive backs, Jared Goff got away with an obvious intentional grounding in the end zone and the Vikings had several red zone trips come away with no points. The schadenfreude doesn't get much better than watching Justin Jefferson complain about being held one week after the Packers probably had to buy new jerseys for their receivers because of the holding Vikings defenders did.
- The other similar thing was Sam Darnold randomly turning into a high schooler playing on 4 Loko. Darnold had 8 overthrown incompletions in the first half. Playing all-pro level ball for weeks and then forgetting how to throw is a patented Jordan Love move. Darnold was a horrendous 16/41 for 166 yards. Goff didn't exactly, have a gangbusters performance either, throwing two picks and a should-have-been safety. The Lions won big but neither team should be happy about their passing game going into the playoffs.
- The Lions can be plenty happy about Jahmyr Gibbs who had four touchdowns and 170 total yards and came this close to causing Paul Allen to jump out of the booth live on air. They were great stats but I have to reiterate that 28 touches for a sub-200-pound running back in a game well out of hand where he sat out a series hurt probably isn't a great idea.
- The Vikings defense was hot or cold, compiling seven TFLs to go with the two picks. They just gave up way too much at the same time.
Bears
After seven years and between 5 and 36 offensive coordinators, the Bears finally did it.
Game Notes
- The sad part is that the Bears didn't really outplay the Packers. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Packers had 200 more yards. Caleb Williams averaged 5 yards per attempt even with a 32-yard completion. Three different Packers had over five yards per carry on more than seven carries. It was just a perfect storm. How does the punt coverage team not know where the punt is going?? How do you call a timeout and not run the clock out before the final file goal?? How do you give up an easy completion to get into field goal range?? It was maddening and that doesn't even include Christian Watson's season-ending injury. I can't imagine a more annoying way for the game to have gone.
- Statistically, the Packers played OK on offense. Jordan Love and Malik Willis combined for 17 completions on 25 passes for 206 yards. No touchdowns. No interceptions, Nothing exciting. At some point this season, the Packers beat into Jordan Love that he should take the easy throw every time and he stopped throwing interceptions. In this game, it was like they also beat into him that every pass needed to be a softly thrown floater to not hurt the receiver's hands. The pass game just never looked good in this one. The run game did, so of course they went away from it when it mattered in the second half.
- The Packers defense somehow did not come away with a sack, though it was fun that Xavier McKinney got his 8th pick. The defense played well for 90% of this game. It was the 10% that ultimately mattered.
- Two weeks ago I would've taken the Packers against any team in the NFC. The pass rush was on a run of bangers. The secondary was killing it. Even the linebackers were good. And the offense is almost always good anyway. But now, I'm not sure I'll go into the Eagles game with any kind of confidence. The offense is so much better with Christian Watson and the defense is the same way with Jaire Alexander. If the Packers are going to win a few rounds in the playoffs they're going to have to dig deep and change their identity a little.

Just read an article that not sure if Jalen H will be ready until they see if he practices tomorrow from concussion protocol.

They've had no problem scoring points without him. Barkley is a beast.

They put up 47 against Dallas without Hurts. Don’t get too over excited.

Hurts could have brain fluid leaking from both ears and and not able to communicate his home address and the impartial” concussion physician will approve him to play. The concussion protocol is a window dressing for player protection. But this is a playoff game with 10 zillion dollars at stake.

I've seen some crazy stuff out of GB fans in the wake of this trauma. MLF is still a good play caller. When clock management and / or coach's challenge become issues, have somebody else do it; keep his nose buried in the playbook! Somebody's still gotta do that, and it's what he does well.
WAY too soon to make any calls about moves re: #9 or 23. Yes 9 needs to practice with JL10 to learn to track a go ball straight over his head, that's "kinda" important for your deep threat. Yes it seems like he might not be able to develop that skill this off-season. He's still missed 0 snaps due to hamstring injury this season. His drop % is still one of the lowest (best) on the team this year. We gotta trust the staff to make good decisions with this, as well as with the $6MM difference keeping Ja makes to the cap.
Could've gone 3-3 in the division, to finish with 13 wins. It was still possible to watch good football this weekend, it just didn't involve GB. Has this team played for 60 minutes even once this season? The biggest problem with the kitten's win is that Detroit won. Seeing the Queens play poorly was fun; why couldn't both teams lose? You'd think blind refs could make that happen.

"We gotta trust the staff to make good decisions with this, as well as with the $6MM difference keeping Ja makes to the cap."
The pressure the Watson injury puts on this roster will have significant impacts on draft strategy and what they choose to do with JA. They're going to have to be active in WRs this off-season, and that might not have really been the case prior to this injury. You can't draft all your issues away in one year, and you only have so much cap to work with. That $6M doesn't move the needle very much relative to the hole he leaves in the DB room, but $17M with a Jun 1 designation might. The WR free agent pool is supposedly pretty weak, but young WR have been really productive in recent years.
"Could've gone 3-3 in the division,"
Yeah, and then the 13 wins puts them potentially in the drivers' seat, but it didn't work out that way. They played competitively in most of those games but moral victories don't mean much.
"Seeing the Queens play poorly was fun; why couldn't both teams lose?"
Yeah, that was a meteorite strike game for me. Not since Randy Moss retired have I really wanted to see guys get hurt, but injuries on Sunday night wouldn't have hurt my feelings very much. Jameson Williams has very quickly reached the level of Kerby Joseph as guys I'd like to see get trampled by a lineman.

"These are the times that try men's souls."
And their pad level
I would love for da Bears to hire Coach McCarthy. Then, the Vikings trade for Rodgers. Then, someone needs to call (periodically) Coach Campbell a Pretty Boy using a cell phone with a 763 area code.
Yessss, letz get the bucket of popcorn ready.

People thought the Lions' defense might a little suspect, but they delivered a textbook lesson on how to beat the Vikings: get pressure up the middle on Darnold, force him to scramble, and blanket the receivers with tight physical coverage. Very impressive.
Words spoken: Probably happens to a varying degree in every locker room after a disappointing performance. But the defense as a whole didn't play badly--Willis got us in a position to win, but the coaching staff let the team down in this instance. As for next game, I don't think any words are going to make much of a difference--they already have a good idea of what to expect, so they're just going to have to execute to the best of their abilities.

No mention of there being three teams from the North in the playoffs and how many times this might have occurred in the past (even when it was the Central with 5 teams). The North was its own worst enemy this season.

We were 10-1 outside the division. I've never seen the North line up like this. I think a few years ago there were 3 teams from the NFC West in the playoffs, but I might be imagining it. It doesn't happen very often.

Even as bad as their record, think what the Bears could have done if they were in the South? Bet they could have contended for a spot without their 5 extra losses in the division. They lost a lot of dumb one even in the division games.

So the refs let both the Lions and Vikes DBs grab and hold with no calls, yet the Packers get called for holding on the Bears 2 pt conversion try on a running play. Maybe we need our DBs to grab and hold and push from the start of the game and see what the refs call.
Darnold came back down to Earth but overthrew some open receivers. Why could he not do that against the Packers?
The Lions O just keeps humming with the run game and short passes. Gibbs is so fast and finds the holes. He really took a shot on that short pass and I was surprised he came back into the game like he did. Tough kid.
My anguish and disgust from the Bears game is wearing off. I just wonder which team will show up in Philly on Sunday. It's go time! GPG!!!!!!!!!!!

Darnold looked like the game was too big for him on Sunday night. Doesn't bode well for the Vikings in the playoffs and if he can't handle it, they'll let him walk. Their defense held the Lions in check for a bit, but the Lions were playing like that was their superbowl and they eventually ran the Vikings over. It's hard to see a team that played like they did on Sunday night losing any time soon.
I agree that the refs let them play...it didn't hurt my feelings to see Hockenson and Jefferson looking for flags all the time, though. It was a little Wild West in the trenches, too. People say that they don't want refs deciding games, especially in the playoffs, but I also think there's a fine line between letting guys play and letting things go until the play no longer resembles the rules they played by to get to the playoffs. Holding, DPI or OPI is DPI (or OPI) regardless of the time of season. I think the best officiating crews get that.
I was pissed about the Bears game for a short bit, but the outcome really didn't matter and it's clear that winning the game was only kind of a priority for the team. The injuries are the bigger deal, and Watson's injury could just as readily have happened in practice on Friday--in this case they're game-planning for the Eagles all week knowing he's out rather than adjusting at the last minute. They'll get some guys back on defense--and the defense played well against Chicago--and the offense will be mostly healthy (aside from Watson). Go play the game!

Packers play mistake free and it's a 50/50 game. All we can ask for.

Apparently, the Packers have a 49% chance of winning. How that's calculated, I have no clue. But I do know that our chances of winning are closer to 50 than they are to 0, which is the chance that all the teams not in the playoffs have.

which means that to get people to bet, TO BET, and even their take on both sides they needed to give points. So, conventional wisdom says that you shouldn't bet on football. The house ALWAYS wins, regardless of whether you do or not.

I expected Detroit to win a shootout game type game like 38-30, because of the injury state of their defense. But they attacked the Vikes boldly and shut them down. Can't help contrast that with the Packers played scared and just reacting rather than acting on the same opponent.
Did LeFleur and Hafley watch that game?

What I took away from that game is that defensive backs just have to grab on and hold on to the Vikings receivers and they really can't get open.

That helps. Oh for the old days when bump and run was real. I much preferred the old rules when DBs had a fighting chance.
