After Further Review: Packers vs. Rams

Ross will provide a few observations every Monday afternoon following a Packers game based on a few viewings of the condensed version of the game on NFL GamePass.  While this might not be the All-22 camera deep dive that might be more "educational", it should provide a conversation point for the rest of the week.

Damn.

Now that that's out of the way let's discuss some non-film stuff.  I'm worried about a lot of things.  I'm worried that McCarthy isn't the answer long term for the rest of the Rodgers years.  He is now taking more from the team in clock management, stubbornness and inability to adapt than he is bringing to it.  It is certainly possible that after all these seasons his message has gotten stale.  If this is indeed his last run in Green bay I hope he's appreciated by all.

With that said, I'm excited! Green Bay took on the NFL's best team on the road and likely would've won if not for a bonehead decision by Montgomery.  They played like they belonged.  The healthier version of the defense proved that it was a viable threat against one of the more high powered attacks we've seen.

Jaire Alexander is a "field tilter".

Ross in regards to your statements below:

"They need to use Jones more as Rodgers has easily been the most effective this season on play action. Jones creates the most stress on play action because get this -- he's the most effective runner.

Speaking of Aaron Jones, I'm just going to drop these two clips, because if I get going to aggressively I'm going to curse and I'm going to get fired from this site."

Do you really think that our HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL HEAD COACH does not know what he is doing by forcing our 4th year wide receiver converted to running back Ty Montgomery on to the field in Jones' place?

I mean Ty does so, so much out on the field, right?

I don't think Bugs Bunny made that boneheaded play because his ego was bruised. Give him credit, he was a much better cartoon character than Montgomery.

Nice work Ross! I guess McCarthy's use of Jones or lack thereof continues to be a mystery. I'm pretty sure also, although I could be mistaken but it looked like Alexander was playing almost exclusively outside and did a bit more than hold up out there. He actually played his best by far. I haven't seen the All 22's but it looks like he may have shadowed Cooks the entire game doing a fantastic job with 5 passes defensed.

The defense looked great. The offense looked completely lost at times. Special Teams was great until
the shank and the last play. Why bother using anyone other than Jones as the RB? I don't get it. I thought 12 checked out of a run with Jones at one point and instead chucked a lawn dart at Monty instead of letting Jones take what was there. This offense is a joke so far this year. It reminds me of the last few years with 4, but with less excitement.

For those people who were pissed off because "you don't take a slot corner at pick 18"? Alexander provided a clinic on why, in today's NFL, you'd better have a damn good slot corner or combination of good slot cover guys.

The Packers have talent, they also have many holes on this team including the big hole in McCarthy's fat stubborn head.
3 - 3 & 1 is exactly where the Packers record should be, extremely average.
This is a team that is rebuilding, they just aren't telling you they are but in reality....they are.
7-8-1 will be the final record, no playoffs again, sorry

Things to be excited about. Our rookie draft class thus far.

Jaire has been dynamic.
Jackson has shown a lot of good things.
MVS could be the big play WR with speed we have been lacking.
St Brown is just a really good WR. He has size and speed and makes plays.
I like Burks. I think another year in the system will do him well.
JK Scott has been good. His last punt hurt the team but he has been really good.
Moore if he can learn to catch the ball could be really good as well.
Bradley has been good as far as I know at LS.
Hopefully Looney and Donnerson can get a lot of valuable practice reps on the PS.

So far this rookie class has been really good!

If they could have traded up for him, I would have done it.

Maybe they tried, but couldn't get a deal made.

Either way, I really like Jackson and like the combination of the 2. He may not be completely ready this year and may need some more time to develop, but if he can keep improving the combination of Alexander, King and Jackson could form a great trio of CB's.

I agree with all (OK, most) of this.

Bradley had a high snap that Scott handled nicely.

I'm surprised that Josh Jackson got only 3 snaps. I do think the defense looked very good, so it is impossible to gripe about it. I do think Jackson can do a lot of what Whitehead did at LB, but I thought Whitehead played very well in the first half at LB. Not so well in the 2nd half.

Burks got just 8 snaps. Again, Whitehead played well so....

There’s also 2 plays that are kind of under the radar one of course is the downed punt on the 1inch line that had players just jogging to the ball assuming it was going into the end zone instead of watching an insuring no one got to it and the second was Aaron Donald’s second sack where it felt like everyone relaxed because they were expecting a TO it was 3rd and 2 I believe and they were knocking on the redzone Rodgers needs to stop burning the clock with those hard count attempts it rarely works and results in them using an unnecessary TO the Packers were most likely going to score a TD first on that drive but instead it was a sack and 3. Those two plays could have definitely changed the game.

I appreciate Martinez game. Textbook form tackling from which ballcarriers rarely get free. I believe a win would have been in the mix had the offensive play calling not regressed after the first quarter to its usual predictive ways. Cudos to the defensive staff for getting them ready to play with purpose.

I agree with this 100%, Ross.

The OLBs made me eat crow all day yesterday. They have depth at CB, WR, and a star at RB (who they need to use more). This absolutely is the best team in the NFCN, and MM looks primed to have his team ready for another run in the late season.

Davis just punched his roster ticket.

Monty should be benched at least. Released possibly.

MM and AR need to stop messing with the RB rotation and figure out the wasted time outs. Making sure you get 20+ runs a game would be good too.

Health permitting, this team has the tools to play deep in January.

Ross - I appreciate your optimism that this team provided many positive signs during yesterday's game.
However we have seen these positive signs many times over the years and we have also seen them wasted away by one bone head play after another just as we did again yesterday.

Given the behavior of many of our players on the sidelines I'm not sure how they will feel going forward and playing all out after yesterday. I'm sure that many feel that they wasted their time. Why go on playing hard and risking a significant injury when plays like Monty's are allowed to happen nearly every week?

The message that I am afraid that many players received yesterday was go ahead and play your hearts out but we'll let someone throw the game away anyway.

MM may be able to rescue this season and get them to the playoffs yet. But he needs to handle this situation with Monty first and then figure out how to play situational football. Thanks, Since '61

The Pack played as well as they could given the circumstances. --- I really believe there are positives that can be taken from a loss on the road to an unbeaten team.
Alexander is going to be a Pro-Bowler for years to come.
Give MVS more opportunities & he'll be a big play receiver. --- The speed factor.
MM will be gone at year's end.

Sorry, this wasn't a MM issue. The team was ready to play. LA is a very talented team. They were stuck in the basement multiple years and made hay with their high draft choices. I for one was pretty optimistic when there was 2:05 and a time out. We get our 40-45 yards, kick the field goal with no time left and win the effin game.
One extremely stupid play killed a very legitimate shot to serve the Rams their first loss of the season. Gute needs to grow a pair and send Montgomery packing. If he gets back in that locker room, he's only going to provide a huge distraction, when the team needs to move on and get ready for NE.

Mike McCarthy was responsible for one of the worst calls I have seen since the Seahawk/Pat SB that resulted in a safety and a huge momentum shift. Couple that with the ten measly points GB scored in the first half and yes my friend, it was and is a MM issue.

Honest "self appraisal" question here - who thought that once the Packers fell behind , especially against a quality opposition, that they were going to come back? Having cringed through some infamous prime-time games in recent years I'm not unhappy with the resolve of this team to find a way back. Bummer about the result, but they certainly weren't humiliated like they have been in recent seasons.

Big Mike's team is an undisciplined mess and this Rams loss is errily reminiscent of the Seattle debacle in the Championship game a few years back!

Players are complaining, coaches are fighting amognst themselves, other players are defying coaches directives and just doing their own thing.

The losses are mounting with rough seas ahead.

This week at New England is McCarthy's "moment" it's sink or swim time for the 2018 season and McCarthy's coaching tenure with the Green Bay Packers.

Time to grab the wheel Big Mike, thar's a Noreaster blowing and it's got you in the crosshairs.

Will you make the moves you have to make and show the team that you are Master of this Ship?

Time to step up Mike, show us that you are a successful NFL Coach!

You expect the best out of your players, now show them that they are getting the best out of you.

Do the readers here recall the NFCCG where AROD had an "attitude" during and after the Seattle game?

The same "attitude" was on display many times throughout the years and especially during a San Diego game where AROD went "off on the sideline" and mouthed an expletive...Anyone recall that?

So Since 61, nostradanus, stockholder and others here have implied that this offense misfires during "situational football" based on poor execution and poor coaching(pick one) --I suggest that an ongoing significant power struggle between MM and AROD still exists and may cause this also.

And until that power struggle resolves, history will repeat and more "Ls" will get added to the record this year.

In addition, IF the power struggle theory rings true and MM has lost the team (likely to be fired this year) and IF Rodgers does a Farve and remains the forever undisciplined DIVA, a new coach's option to fix this may be limited.

Regardless, MM is in no position now to alter AROD behavior and change culture/morale of the team by taking action like Lombardi, Holmgren, Belichick or even Ditka!

Onward to the trade deadline on Tuesday!

AMAZING! The poster who said MM was going to Cleveland next year, please read below.

However, please substitute "McCarthy for Haley", "Browns for Packers", "Cleveland for Green Bay" and "Duke Johnson for Aaron Jones" then... re-read below with those substitutions...

"...Under Haley's (MM) guidance, the Browns (Packers) were predictable on offense. Following first-down incompletions or sacks, it was almost a given that Cleveland (Green Bay) would call a running play.

If spectators knew those plays were coming, you can bet defenses did as well.

So too did the Browns' (Packers) usage of their few playmakers.

On a team needing all the offensive firepower it could garner, the lack of touches for Duke Johnson (Aaron Jones) was borderline criminal.

If correctly predicting a play call is going to be a "run" or a "pass" constitutes being predictable on offense, every offense in the NFL has a 50% chance of being predictable on any given play for any given observer.

This is what drives me crazy about people who claim they call out MM's plays while watching the game on sunday from their couch. If someone thinks "run up the middle" or "pass deep" is predictive play calling, they are woefully ignorant to all the moving parts that are inherent in a given football play.

Damn if you do. Damned if you don't. The union boys are blowing it. Dix is next to give up the big play, and lose the next game. Of course he won't be back. The only thing that matters to most people on this site is: MM leaves, CMIII leaves, Dix leaves, Monty leaves, Cobb leaves, Perry leaves, and lets throw in Spriggs too. My question is what year do you think the Pack will be Back?

i think enough has been written about Ty. maybe not enough written yet about the safety.

when i think about the Packers starting inside their own 4 yard line, i immediately think negative. i don't have the stats; however, i think this is AR's blind-spot.. i think 9 times out of 10 the Packers CANNOT make that first 1st down.. even when they are not facing Aaron Donald. i think this is something that the Packers can and should practice to get better at.

additional comment: victory in New England is now almost necessary to make the playoffs.. the Seahawks game now looks very challenging as that team is (unfortunately) playing at a high level again. the Packers need to pick on the AFC teams to get to the (requisite) 10 wins.
