A CHTV Investigation: Lids' Best-Selling Jersey In WI

Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields was the top-selling jersey in WI, according to Lids. CHTV investigates.

Author's note: This is meant to be both serious and light-hearted.

Lids, a store chain that primarily sells hats, recently released its top-selling NFL jerseys and teams in each state based on sales data from its physical locations. In Wisconsin, the Green Bay Packers were the top-selling team, but surprisingly, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields had the best-selling NFL jersey.

In February 2022, Lids also released its top-selling NBA jerseys by state, which included some surprising results. For instance, Mike Bibby, who retired in 2012, was the best-selling jersey in Alabama, despite not having any apparent connection to the state. (He played for six NBA teams -- the Vancouver Grizzles, Sacramento Kings, Atlanta Hawks, Washington Wizards, Miami Heat, and New York Knicks -- was born in New Jersey, attended high school and college in Arizona, and coached in Arizona and Texas after retirement.) Additionally, Yao Ming's jersey was the top seller in Montana, even though the state's only Lids store didn't sell jerseys, according to ABC13's Adam Winkler.

There appear to be nine Lids stores in Wisconsin in eight cities (Appleton, Green Bay, Madison (two), Baraboo, Johnson Creek, Glendale, Wauwatosa, and Pleasant Prairie). I called each store and spoke to a sales associate/representative. Only four stores had Fields' No. 1 jersey on display (Glendale, Baraboo, Pleasant Prairie, and Green Bay). The Wauwatosa sales associate said they had jerseys on display during the football season, but he refused to give any specific information beyond that. Sketchy, to say the least. The sales associate in Appleton said that the store did not have any Packer jerseys on display and noted that the only presence of a Fields jersey was a return. Both Madison stores do not sell jerseys, and the only Bears jersey on display in the Johnson Creek store was Walter Payton's.

I reached out to Lids via Twitter direct message to see exactly how many Justin Fields jerseys were sold during the relevant time period. It was a simple inquiry to ensure there was no funny business going on, but I felt like I was on the prairie because all I heard were crickets. I also tweeted at them and, again, received no response.

It's surprising to see that Fields' jersey was the top-selling NFL jersey in Wisconsin, especially given that Packer fans tend to stay extremely loyal to the green and gold and, therefore, are highly unlikely to purchase a jersey of a rival team, regardless of the player's success (and Fields is not yet at that level). While the Pleasant Prairie location could sell more Fields' jerseys due to its proximity to Illinois, it seems unlikely that this alone would make his jersey the top seller in the state, don't you think?

Notwithstanding that, taking the Lids' data at face value, I believe the limited selection of Packer jerseys on display during the period in question played a role - with the aforementioned stores carrying jerseys for Aaron Rodgers, Aaron Jones, and/or old-time players, based on the information communicated to me - as none of those jerseys presumably dominated over the other, enough to vault one of them to the best seller in the state. If some of the other stars on current the team had their jerseys on display at Lids, such as the likes of Jaire Alexander, Rashan Gary, Christian Watson, or Kenny Clark, I am confident in concluding that Fields' jersey would not even sniff top-selling status.

The Chicago media celebrating Fields' jersey being tops in Wisconsin failed to acknowledge that (a) the sales data only came from Lids' physical locations and, accordingly, shopping at brick-and-mortar stores is outdated beyond belief, and (b) Rodgers has owned the Bears for the last decade-plus. Above all, the top-selling jersey, for the state of Wisconsin at least, should have a giant asterisk next to it.

My Jay Cutler jersey worked like a charm for about 8 years there... One of the best QBs we've had playing for the Packers 2009-2017.

Ask Charles Woodson. He knows it too.

Why would anyone buy a Packer's jersey at a LIDs?

On a side note, my father gave me a championship commemoration shirt whenever the Packers won one. I wear them on game day and my shirt from the last championship is wearing out. My wife threw away the previous one and I'd only ripped a 6" hole in it!

My father recently passed away and I hope I have to worry about where and when I'm getting a new one soon. Have to keep long standing traditions alive.

I still wear my Gilbert Brown jersey to the games so I might not be really up to date on what the kids are into these days. That aside, to be honest when I read this headline my first thought was "I'd be surprised if he's the #1 seller in Illinois."

I probably shouldn't be commenting because I live nowhere in the vicinity, refuse to buy overpriced merchandise, and refuse even more to wear someone else's name on my clothing (that goes for designers as well).

Maybe the only player's jersey I would ever consider would be that of Brooks Robinson because he was such an exemplary figure on and off the field and I have fond memories of his play growing up, being that's where I'm from.

I did try to purchase a reasonably-priced memento from the last Packers' Super Bowl. As soon as the game was over, I tuned in to QVC and voila, there it was: the Super Bowl Teddy Bear for only $19.99--I figured it might be nice to sleep with or something. Unfortunately I was a little worn out by the drama of the game and put the purchase off to the next day. But by then it had disappeared from the website, so that was the end of that.

I'd buy a Fields jersey if it was 85% off and I happened to be passing by a Lid's. Apparently so do a lot of other badgers.

At that price, Bears fans should stock up - it makes burning the jersey in the parking lot after the game much more cost-conscious.

I've owned several Packer themed sweatshirts and hoodies in the past. But I've always found the custom of a grown man wearing clothing with another grown man's name on the back rather weird, so I've never owned any. And I'm sure I've saved myself a boatload of money in the process. Ditto with adults asking athletes for their autograph. Even more weird.

I own a 1969 Bart Starr jersey which I accidentally got for free from China (long story - they tried to rip me off and I end up accidentally ripping THEM off. Ha!). Because it's a pre-1971 design it doesn't have his name on it, so I guess I'm off the hook then. Too bad it's 3 sizes too large.

Do whatever you need to do to infiltrate the Lids Baraboo staff, Rex. Separate those weak-willed weasels, get 'em in the box and grill 'em until they cry like the whiney little piss-babies they are. Sure, you'll damage a few psyches, but you'll bust Lids Jerseygate wiiiiide open, man, and it'll be sweet.

According to the Twitter graphic, Davantae Adams is best-selling in Nevada and TJ Watt in Pennsylvania. Good for them. But Dak Prescott in North Carolina?
