Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Timeless in Seattle

The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.

I'm going to have some fun and do something different. I'm going to be "that guy" today - the one that harps on a negative even after a seventeen point win on the road against a division-leading team.  Yes, the Packers won this game by seventeen points. But at the same time, I can't shake the fact that there was one thing (ok, maybe more but for now let's deal with this one) that just blew my mind. That would be the final drive of the first half. I'd be able to handle this better if we haven't seen this type of clock mismanagement gsffe from the Packers for several years running.

This is what LaFleur had to say about it:

"I totally mismanaged the end of the half, that was 100% on me," LaFleur said. "Just being too indecisive, putting it on Jordan (Love), giving him a call at the line of scrimmage, just took far too long. That's something that can't happen, that can cost us if it was a tighter game. That was on me." He also said that he wasn't necessarily thinking field goal that drive, adding, " Once we got to midfield, we needed to be more aggressive and that was just lousy playcalling by me."

Well, at least he didn't say he felt good about how they handled the clock there, something that got his counterpart in Chicago fired a couple of weeks ago. While it's good to have a coach who takes responsibility, it would be better to have a coach that doesn't make this type of dumb mistake at all.

From the time they had a first down at the Seahawks 45 yard line with 1:30 left, here's what happened:

1st down play is run with 54 seconds left (wasted 36 seconds)

play clock starts at 46 second mark.

2nd down play is run at 17 second mark (29 seconds wasted)

Time out called (finally!) with 10 seconds left.

Interference penalty on next play puts the ball on the three yard line with 4 seconds left.  Packers try another ridiculously futile attempt to draw Seattle offside before bringing on McManus to kick a field goal.

As McManus lined up to take the kick, I couldn't help but tweet, "If only we had some more seconds left."

In summary, from the time they got a 1st down at the Seattle 45 yard line,  they used a minute and 26 seconds to run three plays, leaving them no time to try even one play from the three yard line. They were left "timeless."

Well done, boys!

One more thing on this - while the fault falls on LaFleur's shoulders, Love could stand to show a little more urgency out on the field as the seconds are ticking away, dontcha think?  I hope it's a lesson learned.

Staying on the LaFleur negativity theme (yes, I know they won by 17 points, but still...), can the Packers please do something about the play challenge decision process? Maybe establish a formal procedure with the coaches watching replays upstairs to eliminate these silly challenges where anyone watching the broadcast replays can see it shouldn't be challenged. Are the guys upstairs afraid to tell him no in fear of being wrong and adversely affecting the game result and thus incurring the wrath of the coach?

OK, one more. On both short yardage situations (3rd and one and 4th and two), the Packers chose to run the ball right at Leonard Williams. May I suggest a way to audible out of that and flip the play to the other side? To, you know, maybe improve your chances of success?

And that concludes the negativity portion of our program,

For whatever reason, it's apparent only Romeo Doubs is capable of catching slant passes from Jordan Love. Good thing it usually works!

The Packers defense is a different animal when Edgerrin Cooper is in the game. That's all that needs to be said.

The Seahawks came into Sunday Night's game on a four game win streak won mostly by way of their defense, who had allowed only 15.5 points per game during that streak. The Packers easily doubled that number and it should have been more! Much of the credit goes to the offensive line, who did not relinquish a sack

Erci Stokes was the only Packer to play every snap on defense (Valentine was one snap behind). And yet, nothing really, really bad happened. Take that Stokes haters (scowls at mirror).

I raise my glass of Carry the G beer to Brandon McManus, who has removed a major stress point in watching Packers games.

Apparently, we've all been pronouncing Kingsley Enagbare's name wrong. It's "Eh NAG bahry"

Al I agree the Packers must clean up the little things. Clock management is very important. Teams that go to and win the Superbowl do not make those little mistakes. I agree that they won by 17 points but they did that playing the backup QB who has little experience and is not very good. Once again it seemed like the Packers were sitting on their lead in the second half. They need to keep playing all 60 minutes. I wonder what would have happened if Smith played the whole game.

When Geno Smith went down, the Packers were leading 20-6, or maybe it was 20-3, and Smith had thrown a backbreaking interception due to being under heavy pressure all night, but yes, I'm sure he would have led the Seahawks to a comeback victory.

I could give a flying crap if MLF takes responsibility...THIS has happened too many times. Clock management, timeouts, challenges, ALL of this STILL shouldn't be happening after 97 regular season games as a HC! As great of a play designer and play caller he is, he's equally BAD at those 3 things. It's a bit embarrassing at this point.

This type of thing will get you beat in the playoffs against the better teams. LaFleur needs to put his ego aside and devise a system to assist him in these situations. Otherwise clock management, bad use of timeouts, and challenges will be just another reason why the Packers lose in the playoffs. Just like ST was in 2021.

You don't get credit for taking responsibility for something that was egregious in it's futility, witnessed by millions of people on TV plus thousands in person.
All knowing many better ways to handle the situation.
The equivalent would be Jack Ruby admitting he shot LH Oswald.
Ownership doesn't excuse the crime.
Gutey - make this a priority to fix now b4 it ends the season.

The two-minutes and less Drill should be written on the play card, denoted by a number and get the play off in ten seconds. The last time I witnessed such lack of awareness was @ Lambeau in Payton Mannings rookie year vs Favre. Sherman had around 54 seconds remaining to the half on the Five yard line and the clock ran down and down, finally settling for the FG. Favre was upset, as they say.

MLF is a good coach, but if he wants to be a great coach and win multiple Superbowls, he has to make make the in-game corrections to his well versed flaws and make quicker personnel changes (when it's obvious that the flawed coach or player isn't getting the job done). We have a very good young team that can go a long way, but the coach has to not only recognize his repeated flaws, but correct them in a timely manner.

I agree! After a pretty convincing win with lots of positives I still stew over certain themes that I see happen over and over again!
* Offensive lulls after building a lead. WHY? Is there a script of conservative play calls that LeFleur is contractually obligated to follow? Murphy/Gute conspiracy? It seems to be a Packer thing but CMON Man! All gas! No brakes....
* Challenges from the 'Outer Limits'! WHY? It is like a slow motion car crash, two or three times a game we fans, en masse, start muttering "don't do it". The clock ticks down you start thinking we're home free and BANG, there goes the challenge flag. This too seems to go back a long way for Packers fans but McCarthy often DID'NT throw it when he should have. Maybe LeFleur was hired with the promise of 'changing things???
* Finally clock management in pressure situations. With few exceptions (Mahommes) this is an epidemic! My guess is too much control from coaches, thus extending communication issues and removing the tactical responsibility from the general on the field (QB). At the risk of revealing my ancient origins, in the old days (big collective sigh) QB's actually ran all the action in two minute drills and the success rate, excitement and tactics were much, much better. Even now, veteran QB's tend to fare better than any of the young guys. I really think that in this case LeFleur was trying to coax Love into taking over and it didn't work. So LeFleur took the blame. Something similar happened in Chicago but, well, the Bears.
Great win though!!!! GPG!

Re: offensive lulls: GB ran the heck out of the ball the whole first half. It was glorious. I am among those who say, “Do it until they stop it.” So, when they started getting stuffed after halftime, was it due to Seattle’s adjustments? Or poor execution? I would love to hear MLF’s honest answer to that, not coachspeak but the real deal. Also, what constitutes “stopping it?” One play? Two? Get stuffed twice in a row and it’s third and long. Throw incomplete or short of the line to gain and it’s a three and out while the fans go insane over “getting too conservative.”

I remember when MLF was hired and he talked about committing more to the run. Lots of coaches pay lip service to that but then throw on 90% of the plays when they get behind by 3 in the second quarter. If GB is committed to the running game we’ve got to tolerate them frequently running on first AND second down even when the gain on first is minimal or less.

"I remember when MLF was hired and he talked about committing more to the run."

Especially when the pass was working, and he didn't have to worry. I've already mentioned the 3 bad 3rd down plays that would have made the difference in the whole second half. Those 3 drives continuing would have changed how they were defending and also ate up a minimum of 3 more minutes of clock each. 1 drop. 1 errant throw. 1 receiver wide open that slipped after the ball was thrown. These weren't on the play calls, it just happens. In the playoffs just one mistake can keep you from winning. Just ask the Ravens when they were in the last AFC Championship.

Matt committing to the run didn't matter because his quarterback at the time didn't honor his play calls. He knew better.

Seattle totally adjusted as the game went on. They played more 5 man lines with a lot of Tite fronts, which means a big man in each A gap. Watch Wahle's breakdown this week and he shows some good runs and a couple bad ones and you'll see the difference in beef immediately. I kept thinking during the game LaFleur would run some off tackle stuff, like the pin and pull blocking Seattle used on their TD run, and gash them for a big one that would make them open up the middle.

Another thing that was noticeable was how they focused on getting Leonard Williams blocked in the 1st half and how that extra lineman in the 2nd half freed him up to wreck some plays. Elgton got into a couple shoving matches with him and had him frustrated but Williams got some revenge in the 2nd half.

There are no style points. The clock management on that drive was low hanging fruit, crazy as it was. I guess the bright side is they got 3? For me, Love is absolved. We had a guy at the trigger who thought he knew better than his coach before, I'll settle for a little subservience.

While were in the negatives who ( the !!!! ) is directing LaFleur to throw the red flag?? he should be fired they are 0=7 and some are not even close. I have to say the second challenge was legitimate. The ball came out of his hand by the direct result of contact to his arm. It didn't just slip out when his arm was going forward. If that was a good call, when Jacobs's arm was hit, and he fumbled, it should have been called an illegal forward pass because he was downfield.

I think the commenters above are correct and Love should have risked the coach's ire and taken over if the play doesn't come in on time or is wrong for the way the D is set up. I think he's getting more backbone every game and have to realize he's only been starting for a short time relatively speaking and may learn different things at a different pace than others. What do they call it? "The game is slowing down"?

Ends of games they throw a lot of stuff at you that you can't foresee. They usually have a play to go to at the line of scrimmage for a different look and it's the QB's decision weather it could be the right call or not. That's where the experience comes in for both the play caller and the caller. The more they know the more options they will have and give. Of course, you know this so I'm preaching to the choir. You can't let the last QB affect your judgment. He was good at the 2 min. stuff, but he took it to the rest of the game and took it too far,

Agreed. If GB has Jenkins on Williams that’s not a bad matchup. Heck, Rhyan vs Williams isn’t horrible either. My unfounded notion is that Rhyan is less agile than Jenkins, making him more of a feast or famine guy: fire out aggressively and knock him back, or whiff completely with an ugly result. Like most elite linemen, I suspect it’s Williams quickness/slipperiness that sets him apart.

However, I reserve the right to be mistaken. This is all just my take on things, not data derived from extensive film study.

CJ- Me too. Powerful RB's are much better when they can get some momentum behind them taking the handoff from under center. Opens up play action too, but then again, we don't do that much either. Shotgun running as a norm makes my anxiety go up, especially 5 yards and in to the end zone.

This game was over when G. Smith went out.
So I'm going to cut MLF a lot of slack.
MLF is a winner.
"Every coach" makes mistakes.

Coaches screw -up.
Usually to get their players/Team to play better.
And it also takes away from the critical times, when
players fuck up.
And for some, it's a common sight.
We aren't a juggernaut.
TEAM First . Chemistry, and in MLF we Trust.

Most of my downvotes have to do with #12,#4, and MM.
I supported the MVP QBs, so they could retire packers.
MM hated Free Agency. And with TTs health problems.
Players lost the fight or hope, and windows closed.
( WE had a buy low, sell high approach)
The packers chose rebuilding over heart, loyalty, and past success.
Management knew what it took to win.
Gute has yet to figure it out.

Bad choices that never produced since 2010.

The game was over when Smith went out. Had he stayed healthy, we were trying very hard to cede control. It’s impossible to know if we would have. Once Smith was gone that was not going to happen and this we will never know.

"This game was over when Smith went out."

Yes, the game was over WHEN Smith went out, but not BECAUSE Smith went out. They were up by 3 scores (20-3) at that point IIRC, and Smith was not playing well. He had thrown 0/TDs and 1/INT with a 77.4 passer rating at that point.

I don't understand why people are minimizing this win. The game was never really in doubt after GB's first 2 drives. Damn...just enjoy the win.

Here we go again, agreeing for the most part. I'm not sure how to deal with that. I would disagree with your assessment of the game being over when Smith went down. The game was over at 14-0. A masterful, imposing first two drives.

My point has to do with running up the score.
MLF wouldn't. The lions Campbell would.
MLF does his best to protect players.

Hey Stock ... Coaches screw-up usually to get their players and teams to play better ?? Interesting observation. Make me wonder why the Bears are still losing ??

I don’t usually agree with SH, but I do here. It was a blowout. As long as the bad process isn’t repeated, I’m glad they learned their lesson.

It was great to get a road win in a far away hostile galaxy. Like many of you, I am looking for a little more execution from the players and coaches. Love has another gear to get into playoff mode. And, I am wondering what happened to Jayden Reed. Ultimately, I am waiting for the team that can beat the Vikings, Lions and Eagles. As Kevin Greene would say "now is the time"

"The Packers defense is a different animal when Edgerrin Cooper is in the game."

Very true Al. And think how good the D would be if they would have added Cooper DeJean in the draft instead of drafting an 'offensive guard' in the first round!

From the beginning, I continually raved (with downvotes from many) about Jacobs being an upgrade over A. Jones. And much like Paul Hornung, he can smell the goal line.
…if our pass rush continues this current breakthrough—lookout!
…I continue to petition for more screen plays.
I believe the Packers sweep our remaining games.
Go Packers!!!

Jacobs was a clear upgrade to many of us. Younger, harder, and a better deal for the product on the field.

I was elated when Gutey signed JJ...an upgrade over Jones who always played with a pitch count to avoid his frequent injuries. JJ is a Work Horse who runs like a Thoroughbred...a younger Thoroughbred at that.

My only regret was Jones deciding to leave for the Ugly Purple for another $1 mil when he could have created the best RB duo in the NFL, backing up JJ (which would likely have resulted in his usual workload in GB (10-15 touches/game).

But his ego and a desire for some revenge made him yet another ex-Packer to play for "those guys". I read that Gutey did up his offer to Jones a bit in the form of additional incentives but he and his agent had already closed the door.

Packers have "No Regerts".

Thanks, Al. This is still (along with "3 things" and the Dusty/Kuhn breakdowns) my favorite column to read each week. I remember reading (somewhere) that MLF's system for the play call is by its nature very, very long (i.e. takes a lot more words to designate all of the call). I think it was something about how Shanahan did his calls as well (well, he did it first). After reading that I can understand why Love has that play call arm band on his arm to refer to. I suspect part of the slow reaction to getting the play moving is due to this. I wonder if MLF and Love have ever tried some sort of "shorthand" for the calls during two-minute crunch time? I would think a call that takes that long to even say must be a handicap when going to "hurry up".

Yes, Cooper makes more of an impact than Walker. And yes, the OL played very well, especially in the first half, opening big lanes for Jacobs, but that was reversed the second half. Perhaps the play calling, especially running right at the best player on defense, was a bad decision. And no sacks? That was also because Love was mobile enough to move around and avoid being tackled, and very often making good throws from unusual angles.
LaFleur has been with the team long enough for his strengths and weaknesses to be shown, and unless he has a real head slapping "C'mon, man!" moment, he's not going to change. He needs to do an in-depth analysis of his strengths and weaknesses, make some tweaks in his coaching style.

Take the red flag away from MLF. One problem solved. Secondly, find out who, in the booth, is telling him to throw the red flag and get him some glasses, or a new prescription. It is usually very clear to the fans, watching at home, whether challenging a play/call, is going to work, or not.

Bitter... it was another bad challenge, at home we all saw the replay several times as did the coaches up in the box before the flag was thrown ... It has to be indisputable evidence showing it was the wrong call for them to change the call on the field, That one AGAIN was not

The biggest negative from the game to me was the clock management at the end of the first half.

Now LaFleur took all the blame. But I think we need to put more blame on Love. He has to know they can't tick the clock down that much. I feel like LaFleur was covering for Love in that 2 minute drill. Now that being said LaFleur needs to see what is going on and call timeout to reset everything. They absolutely should have came away with 4 more points there.

"Staying on the LaFleur negativity theme (yes, I know they won by 17 points, but still...), can the Packers please do something about the play challenge decision process? "
I get that its bad on these challenges. This one I had no problem with challenging. The play was a lot closer then it originally looked and honestly, I am not 100% positive the ball wasn't loose going forward.

"The Packers defense is a different animal when Edgerrin Cooper is in the game. That's all that needs to be said."
He is flat out a stud. He should have had 2 interceptions. When he is on the field he is all over. He is great at everything. The only thing we need to get back is Jaire and our defense is going to look really freaking good come playoff time.

Matt has too much on his plate. I wish the Packers had a really sharp OC who could step in or @ least act as a knowledgeable consultant when Matt gets indecisive/ overwhelmed. I don't think Stenavich is that guy. Even Shanahan needs more input. Hafley has a young assistant who seems invaluable.

Rodgers used to manage the clock, not MLF.

Edgerrin Cooper and Josh Jacobs can't carry the team. It worries me that we rely on their presence so much.
When Cooper is out the team is compromised too much.

Isn't that the reason you have good players? So they can carry the team? I'm not sure if that's true about Cooper yet anyway.

Stokes: Well, there was that issue with the mouthpiece, causing him to be a second late for a block on the Seattle TD. But would it have made a difference anyway in asking him to block an offensive lineman?

MLF: A more stoic and calmer demeanor during game time would serve him well. It's worth noting, though, that many well-known and successful head coaches have a fairly poor record when it comes to challenges (Bill Belichick, for example).

McManus: I hope the stress point will be removed for a good while by re-signing him. Don't fix what isn't broken by bringing in a hodgepodge of unproven kickers next season.

Must not let perfection get in the way of great...that was a great win Sunday night. The first half, until the last possession (when they gorged on the clock) was near perfection.

The O moved the chains on long, clock chewing, scoring drives. 4 scoring drives, zero punts in the first half. The D got off the field and held Seattle to 3 points.

The halftime adjustments slowed things down for both teams, yet the Packers still controlled the game...running 61 plays to the Seahawks 49. And the Defense that seemed to be jelling up to the Dophins game before relapsing into Barry Ball for a few games, finally brought the heat and pressed receivers with more man coverage. Valentine needs to start...but Stokes showed he can still play.

Cooper and Williams added so much synergy to the D...a chain reaction of everyone upping their game.

Packers are a dangerous team.

The thing which most enraged me about the time wasting on that last first have possession was that anyone older than 7 would have known not to do what MLF and Love did. no excuse; i mean that level of not having even a minimal understanding of the most basic matters.... why is being a fan an experience only a masochist could enjoy>
