Confessions of a Polluted Mindset - Demolition Derby
The Weekly Packers Brain Drain from Jersey Al.
By JerseyAl

Seems like it's been a long time since I was able to watch the fourth quarter of a Packers game in serene comfort that a win was in the bag. Gotta say, it was fun.
The most fun watching this game was watching "The Animal" Josh Jacobs go through and bounce off of 49er tacklers like the dominant car at a demolition derby. Jacobs was credited with 15 broken tackles on the day and honestly, it seemed like much more. Beyond his physical strength (much of which is in his legs that never stop churning), the sheer determination and anger he runs with is a sight to see. At one point he went off to the locker room and was designated as questionable to return. In the majority of cases, that means the player's not coming back. But this is Jacobs we're talking about - he did indeed come running back to the field and picked up right where he had left off. The final word I'll use to describe Jacobs is intensity. Check out the close-up shots of Jacobs on the sideline. Even when the game was easily in hand, you didn't see him smiling and joking with teammates. He was crouched down staring straight ahead with the only expression on his face being one of anger. He was still in "the zone" when he could have been relaxing. We all miss Aaron Jones for a variety of reasons, but Jacobs is the perfect running back for this team.
Upon re-watching the game, I focused mostly on the Packers defense. What you see when the ball is snapped is linebackers and defensive backs on the move in all different directions. to be able to do this and not have the bevy of miscommunication issues we've seen in the past is quite remarkable. To give you some visual exampls, check this out from Ben Fennell:
Considering schemes at BC - I'm rather stunned how often Hafley is playing simple zone coverages vs man/man in Green Bay
Disguise Pressure Looks --> Bail into Simple Zones (C2/C3). But you have NO clue who/how they will bail or rotate into them... Fun to watch pre-to-post snap pic.twitter.com/Q6iSVKW2ww

The big question this week is, what happened to Quay Walker? In a really good way, though. He's had some good games this season, but has also had some stinkers. Against the 49ers, it might have been the best version of Quay Walker we've seen since he entered the league. He was aggressive and decisive. Last week you heard LaFleur admit publicly in a presser that Quay should have continued his attack on Caleb Williams on a potential sack play instead of holding up. I've written before that the main issue I saw from him was holding up his attack, playing it safe trying to cover all possibilities and ending up stopping none. Against the 49ers game he was flying to the ball, which allowed him to avoid blocks from the offensive linemen instead of meeting them head on (that's important!). That resulted in him being in better position to make plays and because he was aggressive, made better tackles. He was also effective on the five times he blitzed, again, going full bore with no hesitation. Now, you certainly would have liked for him to nab that interception, but if overall this is the Quay Walker that shows up the rest of the season, the Packers defense will be in much better shape.
So last week, I wrote this about Christian Watson, "Not only is he their most dynamic wide receiver, he has proven to be the most reliable in catching the ball. He does what you want a receiver to do - attacks the ball with his hands." I guess my jinx powers are greater than I realized, so I apologize for that. It's hard to understand how Watson, who hadn't dropped a pass all season could have missed this one. Watching it over again a gazillion times, it seems like his hands are in a slightly odd arrangement and he is trying to pull the ball into his body, exactly the opposite of what has been working for him. I'm not going to blast him for this drop, especially since he did break up what was likely a sure interception later on that could have let the 49ers back in the game.
Looking at the snap counts, I think the Packers were very smart in spreading the snaps around where possible (certain position groups) so as to allow for a quicker bounceback on a very short week. Although it seems like more, Jacobs only played half of the offensive snaps. All six wide receivers played 15 snaps or more. All five defensive linemen played 17 snaps or more with Kenny Clark leading with only 23. All five DE/Edge players saw action with Gary leading the way with only 26 snaps. Eight defensive backs saw action with six of them playing 26 snaps or more. I'm sure the way the game went made it a bit easier for the Packers to do this, but likely it was the plan all along.
I was happy to see Malik Heath get some action as he just could be the player to take over the "Mr. Reliable" moniker for Romeo Doubs Thursday night. He''s not flashy, but one thing Heath has always done well (beside block like a demon) is find the holes in the zone and catch the ball when it's thrown his way.
Finally, have you ever seen a quieter game from Fred Warner? The one player on the 49ers defense that worried me did not look like the Fred Warner we know. I saw him get washed out the play way too often and it kind of seemed like the effort wasn't there on some plays, as if he were resigned to his fate. If you saw my "Three Plays..." article yesterday, you saw him get destroyed by Josh Myers. That just doesn't happen to Fred Warner very often. Glad to see it, though!

Although Josh Jacobs had 26 carries on Sunday, I'm expecting the Packers to feed him the ball just as much on Thursday. Coming into the season, I didn't think Matt LaFleur would use Jacobs as a workhorse, but that's clearly what he's been doing all along. Jacobs is 4th in the league in rushing attempts. He seems to thrive on it. I wouldn't mind seeing Emmanuel Wilson get a few more carries per game, but I'm expecting a heavy dose of Josh Jacobs in every game from here on out.
If Romeo Doubs can't play on Thursday, I'm expecting Dontayvion Wicks to be the main beneficiary in terms of snaps and targets. I hope he is up to it. That 25-yard catch he made near the end of the game on Sunday could be a confidence builder. The key is that Jordan Love shouldn't force the ball to him, which he was doing too much earlier in the season. With Wicks being put on the back burner for a couple games, I'm hoping Love has broken that habit.

Wicks or Heath to fill in for Doubs. I'm leaning towards Heath, right now.

I would be very surprised to see Heath have a bigger role than Wicks in this game. Wicks is way more talented than Heath, and he played almost twice as many snaps as Heath in the last game. I don't think they are going to give up on Wicks because he got the dropsies in the first half of his second season. They minimized his role in the offense for a couple weeks, and now it's time to turn him loose again and see how he responds.

I agree on JJ. He's like Ahman Green...once he gets lathered up, he wants the ball. And as the game goes on, his tacklers hate seeing him get the ball. He's difficult to tackle and hits his tacklers hard. Doesn't shy from contact. That takes a toll after 20+ runs.
Wicks is a talented player. High reward and risk. Heath is a better blocker and a more dependable target. I would prefer Doubs on the field, but if he can't go, I'd go more Heath to help with the run game.

I would use Reed in the Doubs role. He’s the most consistent remaining route runner. Melton is a natural slot and did well there last season when he got the opportunity. Wicks’ drop rate and route inconsistencies just seem a bad fit to replace Doubs. Heath is an X/big slot really. I don’t see him as a great fit either.
If that’s the default then we can sub in Heath as a big slot and Wicks could well get some slot snaps as well as an alternate; easier catches and exploit his suddenness. If we move Watson then either can play X.

Keep Reed in the slot.
Every time you switch a guy.
You weaken the player and position.

Heath is more dependable and makes big plays when given the chance. He is a better WR than Mingo, his teammate from Olde Miss, who went in Rd Two.

I fully admit I am an old man and the game is passing me by. I miss the days of a great halfback being the star of the team the way Billy Sims transformed the Lions and Earl Campbell revitalized the Oilers. (In those awesome powder blue uniforms!)
Nowadays it’s all shotgun, 3 wides vs nickel and throwing the ball 65% of the time. So to see 8 and the run game take over does my (congested) heart good!
Regarding 7: could it be the coaches somehow convinced him to go 100 mph“assignment errors” be damned? We all know he’s got great athleticals. Is it too late for him to remake himself and become a game wrecker from the middle of the D? There is always room for great players on our roster.
GPG!
And
Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

Sims has three pro bowl seasons and was finished after his knee exploded. Earl Campbell is confined to a wheelchair from knee damage and accompanying neurological issues. I don't believe they would do it all over the same way. Pacing RBs and spreading the field is now the way.

The comment on Quay Walker trying to cover all options and succeeding against none struck me as epitomizing the Barry ethos of read and react. Could it be that what we see was the mental shackles of the prior approach finally coming off? That would be tremendous if true!
The last time I recall seeing that happen in a game and (starting) to transform a player from an athlete to a star was Nick Collins. Obviously, it was over games not a game, but it started with games where he was just in the right place more often with better positioning and earlier. That’s been a few years, so I’m holding on to my skepticism as yet, but let’s hope that’s what we are seeing.

I've written about what you describe as "mental shackles" with regards to Stokes. Certainly could apply to Walker also.

I hope you are correct about the mental shackles coming off! Quay has so much doggone talent.
Good analogy on Collins. He started to flash in his second year, by year 3, St Nick seemed destined for greatness.
Quay's year 3 has been a head scratcher with lots of tackles and few impact plays.
But Sunday! I was at the game and the we were noticing him flying around to the ball.
Better late than never!

To all a very happy Thanksgiving. Just have to make it so everything is done before game time. Have to travel to the kids and grandkids this year so I hope the weather gets better. Always thought the kids should come home for holidays but, it's too much work for Mom to do every year so I bite the bullet.

Totally share Al's observation about savouring the final quarter of a Packers game. It is funny how precarious a lead can be. When Watson dropped a sure TD at the end of the half and the 49ers looked like they could make it a 17-14 game, I had visions of last year's playoff game. Kudos to the team for keeping the gas pedal down.
I saw a team win with this game. The sum was indeed greater than the parts and players "did their job". Both the O and D-lines controlled their domains and that was the foundation for the victory. As a Packers fan, I am conditioned to think that QB heroics are an expected part of beating solid opponents. I saw a lot of coach and team execution on Sunday. This is a good sign for a young team looking for a playoff run. Go Packers

One thing fans have forgotten apparently: their starting qb was on the bench, and an all-world reciever(Ayiak) hasn't played. Those two players would have changed the game much. While they targeted Kittle a few times why they didn't do more is a mystery, ditto McCaffery. Oh well, it's a big Packers win and boo-hoo for San Fran.
Onto Miami! Beware Packers fans. The Dolphins are surging with Tua back in the lineup. The defense will be tested mightily.
Usually after a Thursday game the team gets the weekend off, not so this time. The Packers play AGAIN a week from Thursday in the annual Amazon Prime ripoff game. I'll be listening on the radio. If I'm going to pay $139 dollars for a game, I'll buy a ticket and go. When I had Amazon Prime almost all the items I bought didn't fall into free shipping so that was the last time I bought it. Amazon would be smarter to just let fans buy a single game pass to see the game.

The Amazon thing sucks, but playing two Thursdays in a row is not a problem for the team, especially considering that the second game is against the Lions, who also play on Thursday this week.

Nope, no one has forgotten. We just do not care! Weeks 2 and 3 our starting QB was on the bench!
Yep! All teams are going through the same thing. So they can just suck it up.

"The big question this week is, what happened to Quay Walker? In a really good way, though. "
I have liked Walker since he was drafted. But it was getting hard to defend his play a lot. But he definitely played really good game against the 49ers. Outside of dropping the easy interception, he played really well. He looked less hesitant to me. He just attacked. I don't know if he has been hesitant because he is thinking too much.
"Looking at the snap counts, I think the Packers were very smart in spreading the snaps around where possible (certain position groups) so as to allow for a quicker bounceback on a very short week."
While watching the game I didn't notice this. But seeing the snap counts after it definitely seemed like they were thinking ahead. I'm sure it helped that the 49ers were shorthanded. Either way, preserving the guys to play a longer stretch was definitely a smart move.
"Finally, have you ever seen a quieter game from Fred Warner? The one player on the 49ers defense that worried me did not look like the Fred Warner we know."
To me this was just a great job done by the play calling/game planning/play design & great OL play. The play calling was tremendous. You could tell the 49ers didn't know where the ball was going. Also the OL play was tremendous. Jacobs then finished off the runs with his ability break tackles and make players miss.
The farther we are getting into the season the better the OL and RB's are getting. They are working with each other much better.

I too am heartened by spreading the snap counts on defense, keeping the efficiency and energy level high and ideally reducing the chance of injuries resulting from fatigue. The dividends should be evident as the season progresses.

Quay Walker has had some good games? OMG!! That's going to trigger some people, no doubt.
I hate the Thanksgiving game, and here's why:
For a long time, it was Detroit at home on Thanksgiving. It still is. It really constitutes a schedule advantage for two games, because you're at home on the short week and then you get 10 days to prepare for another. So, two games out of sixteen the Lions get a schedule advantage that no other team gets. That would be like a baseball team getting a break in 20 games, or an NBA team getting an 8 game advantage.
The Cowboys saw this immediately and horned their way into the Thanksgiving game so that they could enjoy this advantage too. And now, we have a triple header so that at least one other team....in this case, Green Bay.....gets to enjoy it.
IMO, if you want to have that Thanksgiving Day game every year, like the Lions and Cowboys, then you should have to play it on the road. You'd be at a disadvantage on the short week, but you'd have the advantage the following week with the extra time off.
Anyway, that's my annual Thanksgiving Day Game rant. As for this Thanksgiving, if you've ever wanted the Bears to win a game, this would be the one.

Good explanation of the competitive advantage of playing a home game on a Thursday. On the other hand, it kinda sucks for the players and stadium employees to work on Thanksgiving Day. Maybe fans are not so keen on it either. I heard that tickets for the Packer game tomorrow are cheaper and easier to get than they have been for any game this year. So maybe there aren't any other teams who are eager to host games on Thanksgiving. The Lions and Cowboys are used to it at least.

Fred Warner doesn't have his run-stopping partner Dre Greenlaw to share the load-he's the only one trying to stop the run because he's now paired with we-know-who-, De'Vondre Campbell.
I am also rooting for Quay's renaissance (I've been very critical)
Always look forward to Al's insight and fun pop culture references.

According to ESPN, Fred Warner has stated he's been playing with a 'fractured bone in his ankle' that occurred in the Sept. 29 game.
Regarding Tre Greenlaw, the 49ers 'officially opened Greenlaw's practice window' and he participated today (11/27).

"I've written before that the main issue I saw from him was holding up his attack, playing it safe trying to cover all possibilities and ending up stopping none."
JerseyAl: That was perfect analysis of how the big, fast, strong, athletic Quay had been playing. I was thinking maybe it was the "green dot" making him "give" pre snap calls before focusing on his own assignment.
Maybe Hafley and Campanile have lightened his pre snap load...because Sunday we finally got to see just what a presence he can be on D.
Need him, Cooper and Wilson (and maybe Hopper sees some snaps) if Hafley again plays a lot of base.
If Alexander can go, will probably see the 3 safeties in the nickel to protect the middle where Tua loves to throw.

My slovenian friend send me an e-mail, telling me that some of you asked what happened to me and where I am. Thank you for your concern.
I'm here and I following our Packers, relying on CHTV, YouTube, and some other sources. While some games where dissaponting (lets say 3 of them), I enjoyed all 8 wins.
Why I did not posted comment for a long time? Well, I first read already posted comments. And I found out that after reading already posted ones I have nothing better or different to say. I'm giving thumbs up or down and that is.
Now, why then today, you'll might ask. Because I wanted to wish everyone here very very happy thanksgiving day tomorrow seasoned with another convincing victory of our beloved Packers. Althoughts I will watching game Friday morning (by my time) as the game will starts at 2 am (deep in the night) and I need to sleep. I also keep one sleepless night to SB this season to watch Packers victory vs any team which show up in SB late in February together with all of you.
Keep doing good job and once again - have a nice Thanksgiving for all US, especially for my Packers fans...
