5 Things to Watch in Packers at Cowboys: Run. The. Ball.

Aaron Jones heads back to Texas, looking for another signature performance against the Cowboys to send the Packers to the Divisional Round.

Run. The. Ball.

The Cowboys defense has plenty of strengths, but stopping the run is not one of them. Dan Quinn’s unit ranks 20th in the NFL for yard per rush allowed.

Enter: Aaron Jones. The Texas native has six touchdowns in his three appearances versus the Cowboys, rushing for just under 6 yards per carry. Leaning on Jones to keep the chains moving and stay ahead of the sticks will be key to victory for the Packers.

Matt LaFleur appears to know this, as he called seven straight run plays to start the game against Dallas last season, in which his team eventually prevailed.

While they have a stingy pass defense, the Cowboys are happy to let teams run the ball on them, and the Packers must oblige. Doing so successfully should help shorten the game and put pressure on Dak Prescott to maximize possessions on the other side.

Pressure on Prescott

Speaking of pressure, the Packers will need to generate plenty of it in order to hold the Cowboys’ offense down.

Joe Barry’s scheme does not really work without the defensive front speeding things up for the opposing quarterback, and hassling Prescott will be of the utmost importance this week.

With Jaire Alexander looking doubtful to play – and unlikely to be fully healthy even if he does – the Packers do not have the personnel on the back end to match up with CeeDee Lamb. If the Packers cannot get home with regularity, Prescott will pick the secondary apart.

Putting Prescott under duress will be easier said than done, though, as the Cowboys have a strong offensive line with only one potential weak link in Terence Steele at right tackle. Sunday would be a perfect time for Rashan Gary to register his first sack since week 13.

CeeDee Lamb

Whether Alexander is available or not, the Packers defense must do everything in its power to reduce Lamb’s impact.

The former Oklahoma receiver has announced himself as a true star this season, racking up 135 catches for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns, all career highs.

With solid, but not otherworldly receiving options elsewhere, and Tony Pollard slumping after an excellent 2022 campaign, Lamb is basically the offense in Dallas.

Preventing him from blowing the game open is the first assignment for Barry, who has at times shown an ability to take a star receiver away, but it is difficult to know what to expect from his defense on a weekly basis.

Jayden Reed vs Jourdan Lewis

There is no true number one pass catcher for the Packers, but instead a plethora of strong options for Jordan Love to throw the ball to.

This means game plans can be formulated around favorable matchups versus each opponent, and this week, Jayden Reed could be the go-to guy.

The Cowboys’ other corners, DaRon Bland and Stephon Gilmore, are excellent, and even Dontayvion Wicks, Green Bay’s premier route-runner, could struggle to get open regularly.

Lewis on the other hand, ranks 108th out of 128 qualified corners at PFF, and primarily mans the slot. Reed has enjoyed a spectacular rookie season and could rubberstamp it by ruining Lewis’ day.

Micah Parsons

On a defense filled with talent, Parsons is the lead dog, legitimately capable of wrecking any given play or game.

Parsons’ versatility means he can be moved anywhere along the line of scrimmage, looking to expose the soft spot. Dan Quinn will no doubt get Parsons lined up across from Josh Myers and Jon Runyan on Green Bay’s interior when possible.

Green Bay’s young offensive line has been truly impressive this season, especially in pass protection, but there is no time to let up now.

When he has time, it is now the expectation that Love can put up points against any defense in the league. Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom need to be at the top of their game to cope with Parsons, as well as the consistently disruptive DeMarcus Lawrence, and keep their QB upright.

We will never run the ball for enough points to beat Dallas on their home field. This whole season has been about Love and the passing game, and if we’re going to win, Love is going to need multiple TD passes b

My hope is that when GB is not running the ball, they are passing it.

Three teams this year beat the Cowboys by running the football heavily. For a team that had 5 losses that seems like pretty good odds.

That’s the recipe to beat the Cowboys. It’s not exclusive, obviously, but if you don’t run on them their rush will disrupt everything and their secondary will be free to hunt the ball. Their D is premised on confusion and getting to the QB. They aren’t a big front 7 and they aren’t great against the run. Jones needs to lead the way.

Cowboys averaged 125 yards a game given up on the ground in their 12 wins and 171 yards given up in their 5 losses. But LH has gotta LH.

I would like to run it no huddle with 2-backs on the first series for a score. The second series a kill shot play 1 to Melton/ Watson...That would be a great start to the day.

I would like to see the Packers score touchdowns off 10+ play drives that eat the clock and keep our defense off the field. After said scores, I want Carlson to kick the ball out of the end zone.

While we're attempting to reduce Cee Dee's impact, we had also better be paying attention to Jake Ferguson (71 catches, 40 first downs) and Brandin Cooks (8 TDs).

I like to be optimistic, but this seems like it might be asking too much of our secondary--at least what it looks like at this point with Alexander doubtful. We need standout efforts as far as QB pressure goes from multiple players, not just one.

Love: He's thrown only one INT over his past 8 games, and with those CBs mentioned, he'll have to tread a fine line between daring and perilous with some of his throws.

Special teams: It would be very helpful if the Packers had a mistake-free game. Big advantage to Dallas in the kicker department, as Aubrey is an All-Pro--proof that it is sometimes worthwhile to expand your kicker search beyond the NFL and NCAA.

I don't think it's about the secondary as much as the front getting pressure against an OL that three players make the All Pro team. No pressure and the secondary is getting scorched. Keep Dak moving and they have a chance. Gary especially needs to show up consistently, his guy is the weak link.

I think JL10 would do better avoiding throwing into dangerous situations. If none of his targets can get open it will be a long day. If the running game can get going it's much more likely that JL will have open targets to throw to.

Leotis, thanks for the link. Quite a story the young man has. I loved how his wife told him, "You can do that!" after watching an NFL kicker miss a field goal! My wife tells me almost the same thing, "You could miss field goals too." :)

We used to play a lot of pickup basketball when I was in high school. After adjusting to everybody’s skills, my teammates used to say I had tremendous range on my jump shot: I could miss from anywhere.

I would love to see Rashan Gary have a big game. He's faded over the past several weeks, starting with the Giants game, where he had a dream matchup against a backup tackle and couldn't get much of a pass rush. Tom Silverstein said that he thinks Gary may be wearing down because his injury prevented him from doing his usual off-season conditioning program.

Just can't wait to see these young Packers tomorrow going up against the Cowboys. Based on what we see and hear from the ,"experts" that the Packers are just a stepping stone for the Cowboys to ultimately meet the he 49ers for the NFC title.
Well, I hope the cowboy players feel the same. Please overlook Jordan Love, Aaron Jones, the young WRs and TEs. No worries when it comes to Kenny Clark, Rashaun Gary and the suddenly competent D.
It appears this Packer squad is loose, confident and focused on playing their best football tomorrow.
Win or lose, Love plays a solid game and this squad will put the NFL on notice as a team that will contend for years to come.

For some reason, I'm quietly optimistic about the Packers chances. But a lot depends on the guys in the trenches. And on the Packers defensive schemes in particular. It seems that Barry is doing the same thing he did last year. That is, when his job is threatened, he suddenly shows he knows how to get the most out of his players, and the defense becomes an effective unit that complements the often potent Packers offense. This is not an endorsement for Barry. I would like him to resign at the end of the season, so he can "pursue other opportunities" or "spend more time with my family" or whatever. But tomorrow? Time to shock the football world.

Passing puts more points on the board than running. Beating Dallas means we need to score points. We’re not going to win a 21-20 squeaker

I think we can dominate the game running or passing. a mix is the best until you're ahead by 2 or more scores. Our offense is a budding juggernaut. Finally the OL is doing well pass and run blocking and jones/ Musgrave and potentially Watson healthy enough to go. If JL rises to the occasion and the young guys...we could blow them out as bad as everyone thinks they will do to us.

We have the back to back NFC Offensive player of the week in Jordan Love. We have a boat load of #2 WR's that get open...a lot. We have 2 excellent Rook TE's that play hard and make plays. We have the NFL's hottest RB in the league the last 3 weeks. JL is 2nd in the passing touchdowns. The OL has been blocking in the run game and pass game the last several games. I think the DL will put xtra pressure on DAK for shorter completions and hurries. Our fast WR's are on turf and will be even faster and more open. Dallas has not had a bunch of games with misdirection. JL is seeing the field and hitting his targets. If we can get pressure up front the back end job will get easier. We look ready to play more than the last 4 seasons. Our offense has not been sputtering like it had been before. We did not punt the ball last game. ST worries me some in the kicking game. WE HAVE SO MANY GOOD OFFENSIVE PLAYERS NOW IT IS PICK YOUR POISON. Dallas has a couple really good WR's and a good TE. Pollard is shifty. Dak has been balling out. I think our Offense is better than anyone wants to say and if Barry frees up the defense to ball out...our defense is better than people think they can be also. The Packers are undefeated in this stadium. House money....GPG...Good luck fellas.

The two Saturday games were not even competitive. Most experts aren’t giving the Packers a chance.
I think if there are no self inflicted wounds the Packers will play the Cowboys close. Jones catching passes out of the backfield could be a key. I hope on defense Campbell and Savage don’t give up many big plays. I don’t have faith in either. And it would be great if special teams had a positive day, and the O line played as tight as it did against the Bears.
It would be nice to see the Cowboys play a mistake filled game full of defensive lapses.
No matter what, if the Packers play a solid game I will go into the offseason with optimism.

We beat them last season with a healthy Watson, Doubs. Now we have Reed, Melton, Wicks, Kraft, Musgrave and more contributing a bunch. Our DL is better also. Unless the youth falters....NO NFL TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS HAS THAT MUCH OFFENSIVE TALENT. IF ML has done a good job game planning......We should be good....if our Defense puts their OL into stressful pressure situations.

On paper, this is an easy win for Dallas. No jaire just adds to the weight of paying 69 and 12 for no production this year. ~$90M between those three for nothing in this game.

And that's the key to this game. This team has no business thinking they can win. So they need to go play that way. They need to play loose, they need to play with an aggressiveness that comes from simply enjoying playing the game, they need creativity in the play calling.

The key to this game is mental toughness, and it starts with MLF. Is he going to come out and play scared? Or can he set the tone early? Can he deliver an early message to Dallas that this team is ready to fight and that they're going to enjoy every last minute of it?

That's the team the Packers hated to meet in the playoffs, when every game was a win for 12 on paper, but things got messy when the game was played. That's the team the Packers hated playing when they just wanted the opponent to lay down and die instead of fighting back.

People talk about home field advantage, but you punch that team in the mouth and force the crowd to go quiet...that's the most deafening noise in sports.

We're going to learn a lot today, and I hope we learn that this team can fight.

The weather will be very cold in Dallas today. But, for the Packers it will seem sunny and balmy. This favors the Packers. If Jaire is ready to go it should neutralize Cee Dee Lamb. If we can also stop the run; we win in a squeaker.

This young Packers team has proven they have the talent hang with anybody when it's all clicking. Caveat might be 49ers or Ravens, who are, IMO, on a higher level than anyone else in the NFL, and this team hasn't tasted that level of competition yet... yet.

I don't fear the Cowboys.

I don't fear their pass rush. I think our OL has shown a lot of moxy over the last many games and we've seen the Packers creatively gameplan to shut down problematic edge rushers when needed. We've also seen Love feast on blitzes and stay calm under pressure.

I don't fear playing in their house. I don't think this young Packers team cares where they play, and I believe the Packers have the horses to compete if it turns into a boat race.

My unknown is how is our defense going to perform. Is it going to be the ugly Joe Barry defense that just leaks, and leaks, and leaks? The one that applies some pressure but just can't seem to get home? Or is it going to be the stifling Joe Barry defense that makes all pro QB's look tame? With everybody buzzing around in the backfield hitting the QB?

My biggest specific concern is Nixon getting abused out of the slot. I think Keisean Nixon is a guy who had a GREAT splash year on ST and got rewarded with a big contract- one that is bigger than his talent of defense warrants. He has made some plays here and there, but overall, I fear he is a liability in coverage just waiting to be exposed.

I really don't have any idea how to predict this game. My head says it could go almost any direction. My gut feels the Packers will be far more competitive than most of the country feels they can be. My heart screams the Packers have the talent and are on fire right now- and post a win with a statement game that is DECISIVE.

I guess I'll just sit back and see how it unfolds. Gonna be a great day to be a Packers fan, very proud of this young team and excited to watch this group tackle their first playoff game. There is value and growth to be had with any outcome.
