5 Takeaways From Packers 35 - 25 Steelers: Let Love Cook

Matt LaFleur needs to put the game in Jordan Love's hands more often.

Let Jordan Love cook

Sunday night was one of the very best games of Jordan Love’s NFL career as he outgunned his former teammate Aaron Rodgers.

Per Opta, he became the first quarterback in history to complete 20 consecutive passes, throw for 350 yards and three touchdowns, and have zero turnovers or sacks all in the same game. His 78.4% completion rate was the second-best mark of his career, and his best since week 18 of 2023.

While the run game has struggled to get into gear, in part due to a Green Bay offensive line which has not opened enough lanes for Josh Jacobs, and is still not fully settled – Jordan Morgan and Sean Rhyan continued to rotate on Sunday – it has been a different story in pass pro.

Not allowing a sack against a vaunted Pittsburgh pass rush speaks to Love’s talent for avoiding them, as well as Matt LaFleur’s skill in drawing up effective pass protection plans, and the offensive line’s ability to execute.

Emanuel Wilson gave the run game a spark at times versus the Steelers, but with how incredibly well Love has played all season, it might be time his head coach starts putting the game in his hands more.

There are some signs this could be beginning to happen. In the first five games, the Packers averaged 29.4 passes to 26.8 runs; a 52:48 split. In the last two weeks, they have thrown the ball 33 times on average compared to 22 runs, a 60:40 split.

Part of the reason for the change is likely that they were down in both games in the second half, but becoming more pass-heavy has been effective, and just might serve as a bit of an epiphany for LaFleur to let Love take over moving forward.

Second half Packers blow Steelers away

After digging a hole for themselves before halftime for the second straight week, Green Bay slammed their foot on the gas and never let up in the second period.

It was a dominant and mature 30 minutes of football on both sides of the ball, with players stepping up and executing across the board.

This group has shown the crucial ability to deliver in clutch spots, and despite still being the youngest team in the league up against the second-oldest in Pittsburgh, they were the more disciplined team, with the Steelers the ones committing back-breaking penalties down the stretch.

Cornerback trials and tribulations

After receiving a vote of confidence from both LaFleur and Jeff Hafley that he would be able to bounce back from a terrible showing against Arizona, Nate Hobbs was benched for Carrington Valentine, in a move that was overdue.

Valentine played 62 snaps to Hobbs’ four, and justified his promotion. It was not a perfect game in coverage for the third-year player, but he prevented catches by DK Metcalf on two key plays, including an impressive pass breakup in the end zone despite not having the ideal leverage.

Elsewhere, Keisean Nixon had a rough outing, keeping multiple Steelers drives going on 3rd down by giving up big receptions or penalties. He also allowed a touchdown and muffed a punt.

He was ill entering last week’s game, so deserved some benefit of the doubt for a below par display against the Cardinals, and every corner is going to give up some plays, but his play in the first half of Sunday’s contest was egregious.

I doubt the Packers make an aggressive push for cornerback help at the deadline having put their faith (and some serious cash in one case) in Hobbs and Nixon this offseason, but they still have a couple of weeks to make that determination. Playing Valentine full time would be a start.

Tucker Kraft is an elite tight end

After a seven-catch, 143-yard performance on National Tight Ends day, as well as two touchdowns, Kraft launched himself right to the top of the receiving charts at his position.

He now ranks 2nd in yards among tight ends with 469, is tied for 2nd in touchdowns with six, and leads the position in total expected points added (EPA), despite running 100 fewer routes than Trey McBride in 2nd place.

Kraft continues to come through in the clutch for Green Bay, converting pivotal 3rd and 4th downs during Sunday’s game, including a touchdown on 3rd and 4 to help put Pittsburgh away.

For all the handwringing over who is the Packers’ WR1, Kraft is clearly the lead pass catcher on this team. The statistics now reflect as much, and he has absolutely earned that honor.

Christian Watson makes an immediate impact

Even though they ended up running away with this game in the second half, it can be argued Green Bay does not win without Watson, who was instrumental in some of their biggest plays of the night.

So much for being eased back in, Watson played 56% of the snaps, caught four passes for 85 yards in his return to action, including a 33-yard reception to convert a critical 3rd and 7, putting the Packers in the red zone.

Watson also made key blocks on two of Green Bay’s touchdowns, helping Kraft and Josh Jacobs find paydirt. The receiver’s impact on this offense cannot be overstated, and that was on full display in his first game back.

Great game. I was surprised that they did not activate the kicker that the previous game kicked a 61 yard FG.

A you dont know the packers. 1. Kraft was not even playing when they drafted him. He was like three on the depth chart. Why? He was picked after the other two and you have to go by how Gutt drafts to understand who plays and who doesnt. These coaches cater to Gutt who signs their paychecks.
2. Hobbs played because Gutt went and got him even though Valentine is better, Valentine sits.
3. Mcmanis is our pick and if he can even stand the other guy sits because this was Gutts pick so he plays.
Its the way of the Packers. Not the best players play all the time.

I don't think Gute signs the coaches paychecks. More probably, that's Russ Ball or someone. Coaches answer to LaFleur, and LaFleur doesn't answer to Gutekunst.

If you're going to be a smack troll, at least try to get the basics right.

McManus is the starter and best kicker. Havrisik did great filling in, but he has bounced around with 6 teams in 3 years. Trust in the coaches who see these guys every day in practice. You can't keep two kickers on the active roster so Hav will go to the practice squad and get plucked or possibly a trade for a late draft pick.

The Steelers are difficult to run on, so trying to run to set up the pass was always a difficult proposition but Wilson did a good job keeping drives moving and running the cloak at the end on a day where perhaps Jacobs wasn’t quite at his best.

I question the tactics for the Steelers. Against some opponents, the key is not to favor the pass or the run immutably, but to adapt to match our strength to their weaknesses. Yesterday, the second half saw us adapt, but probably more through some plays under pressure causing improvisation as much as a conscious decision and the result was a better match of our strength to their weaknesses. That’s not going to be true every week.

"...the result was a better match of our strength to their weaknesses."

And that is a primary duty of the coaching staff. Being 5-1-1 tells me the staff has been doing a solid job on matchups. But still I feel the O has left likely points off the board and the speedy D having a few lingering lapses giving points too easily.

The halftime adjustments were excellent and fun to watch on the field. On both sides of the ball.

The Packers are a very talented team. Staying healthy and attacking opponents weakness can make them very difficult to beat. Shoot, they have been very difficult to beat in all 7 games so far.

Coaches need to approach every opponent with a specific, custom game plan. I recall Hafley mentioning this at his intro presser last year saying every opponent game plan will be different to attack weaknesses and put your guys in the best positions to make the plays.

LaFleur has a bad habit that has taken the juice out of the Packer games. He calls plays that are simply wrong; take for instance the 3 third down plays that poured cold water on the offense. A 56 yard FG with a kicker just getting out of rehab (Is he crazy?). That was number 1. Next, a second and 10 run play that gained exactly 1 yard, then 3rd and 9 (how crazy is he?) Lastly, another 3rd and long topped off with a running play. Let's just understand LaFleur has done this stuff in every game. The worst was playoff game 2, last season, after beating the Cowboys with passing, he starts off the 49er game with run play after another...where was Love? Dead cold without a pass under his belt.

What packers are you talking about? The GREEN BAY verson is run first and always has been. I beleive this is to run the clock and keep our crappy pass defense off the field longer.
Last night Jacobs wasnt doing anything so they were forced to abandon the run and start passing which I like. It changed the game.

The O is trending back to being a finesse, pass oriented offense.

I admit I expected the offense to become a physical ground pounding group created by Jacobs and the OL of Walker, Banks, Jenkins, MorganRhyan, Tom. Nope.

Pass blocking has been far better than run blocking so the 5 are concentrating on defending Love.

They are going to need a potent run game, especially when facing a top pass defense. Balance is important for the playoffs one and done tournament. NFL defenses adjust to opponent tendencies and being predictable makes scoring more difficult.

I can see more short, quick passes to earn YAC replacing some runs to act as ball control for first downs. Love looks really good on passes to the flat and quick hits in the middle.

They need to establish the pass to setup the run. This OL is not good enough in run blocking.

That’s what it’s been, with the possible exception of late 2023, since Rodgers left, but is it what we are really so much better or needs to be something we use tactically. We did in the second half, so we can, so why is it a fixture not an option to maximize tactical advantage? Is yesterday a sign that Love and the offense have outgrown such rigidity when it pits us against opponents’ strengths?

So far, yes. Weakness on the interior of the O line, failure to move people out of the way. That's not what we expected either. I don't think we'll get very far in the playoffs like that, but still have exactly half the season to fix it. Including 5 divisional games, the Eagles, and by week 18 the Ravens might again be hard to beat. Denver is also playing well. That's at least 8 out of 10 games that look like they might be tough on paper.

Totally agree. Jordan Love has been solid-to-great this entire year when he has time. It's pressure that gets to him and gives him happy feet (like 95% of all QBs). Perhaps Lafleur is waiting to see what the pressure looks like before settling into a passing scheme?

That was enjoyable, at least the second half, when LaFleur adapted to what he saw in the first half. To suggest that it was all just "improvisation", is quite frankly, nutty. Just another attempt to throw shade at one of the better coaches in the league.

Nixon didn't have a great game, but beating up on him because he couldn't stop Metcalf when he had him one on one at the goal line is kind of nutty, too. Metcalf is a pretty good receiver, and we play in a league where QBs complete 67% of their throws. When a HOF QB has a Pro Bowl receiver one-on-one, that's going to be a completion most of the time.

5-1-1....the only team in the NFC with only 1 loss. Wins on the road against AZ and Pittsburgh and a tie against Dallas.

I'm at a loss to explain our ineffective run game. I go over the plays, in stop motion, but I'm just not seeing "the thing" that's killing the plays. Given that Wilson did so well, I'm wondering if maybe the problem isn't the line, and I wonder if Jacobs is being bothered by injury. I'm going over the game again today and if I see 'the thing', I'll let the world know. So far, not a clue.

Matthew Golden. I really thought the Packers needed a legit #1 WR, and I was real happy that they took him. In training camp, there were repeated stories about how Golden was our de facto #1. Yesterday, 3 targets, 3 receptions, 4 yards. That's disappointing.

Valentine is a good player for us. Keep him on the field.

Well said Leatherhead. Wilson looked faster to the hole and through it than Jacobs did. Maybe Jacobs is not quite 100% ? I don’t know. Also in the first half the Steelers brought in extra O lineman and ran behind them to the tune of 8 yards per carry. Luckily for the Packers the Steelers abandoned that in the second half.

Re: Matt Golden. Not sure why the #2 WR in the entire NFL in 'true separation' doesn't get more targets. Exemplified when the replay of Love's first (or maybe second) incompletion after 20 straight completions...where Love basically grounded the pass near the right sideline...showed Golden wide open crossing into the middle from the left side for an easy walk-in touchdown. GB took a FG on the drive instead. Just odd that Golden's not focused on more...

Golden was open but both pressure and bodies close to Love meant he may not have been visible and the throw may not have been wide and possibly across his body. On the whole, I think he did the right thing on the play as it developed, which looked a little messed up and looked always designed for a wheel route as well.

More generally, we seem to struggle to get Golden on shorter crossing routes that let him catch in motion and space. We have not been good at that with Reed either since this time last year. If Golden is getting free, it’s usually behind the D. That means we need cleaner pockets than we often have had. Golden needs to be more open than bigger targets too, if it’s man coverage. That’s the downfall of being smaller.

Agreed, I don't think #0 "disappearing" in games is so much due to his inability to get open. I think often when JL10 looks for him he's covered, and when he's open QB isn't seeing it. I don't know what the best solution for that is, but I do think that more reps / experience / practice will fix it. Maybe not his rookie year but his rookie contract should have plenty of opportunity for that.

The problem is we need the production NOW; on paper this season looks like our best shot to the Lombardi due to future cap constraints. I can hope that the speed of adding #9 on the field at the same time will help, and #11 coming back will make GB unbeatable. Those 3 + 8 and 85 all at the same time? I don't see how an opponent is supposed to account for all that, and it should at least give opposing DCs nightmares.

GPG!

Good thoughts on Nixon, LH. I was wondering, as his night got rougher, if he had somehow entered his enemy year yesterday. Other than that poor Steeler that blew his knee, I don't think anyone had a tougher night than Keisean.

Dragon, which calendar are the years you reference based upon? That sure looked like enemy year woe to my untrained eye.

"Let Jordan Love cook..." Like maybe starting in the first half. The strength of the OL is pass blocking, so maybe we need to pivot to that earlier. Three three-and-outs in the first half is not acceptable for a team with so many offensive options.

Kraft: The offense feeds off his energy. He runs by, around, and through defenders. He has to be the Player of the Week.

Golden: Three catches for four yards. Gotta do better here. Get him going in the first half.

Cornerback: Maybe's there's no need to make a "desperate" move, but it wouldn't hurt to have a useful reinforcement, either. If Nixon and Valentine are going to be up and down and you're forced to bench Hobbs, then there's a chink in the armor that needs to be fixed.

Discipline: The Packers were the smarter team on the field, and the Steelers helped us out with their lack thereof.

Cooper: Had a really nice game and forced the fumble that shut the door on any Rodgers comeback. Goodbye, Steelers!

Two of those failed possessions in the first half ended with dropped passes on third down, by targets who have been very reliable this season. Fortunately that didn't cost us the game. Catch those two and make the two missed FGs and MLF's bad playcalling would suddenly look pretty good ...

Sitting first in both the division and conference, by half a game, seems about right after this game. I'm still not certain they can handle the Lions with how dominant they were last game ...

LeFluer aint the rocket scientist many thought he was. Worse he is so dam predictable. Ball gets to the 20 and its lets run it and run it again and if that dont work we will do a screen pass but were not going to try and pass into the end zone. I have no idea why either.

I think several things contribute to it. The interior of our O line doesn't move people out of the way. Establishing the pass forces opponents into a lighter box, allowing better opportunity to run the ball and from there we can keep opponents guessing. I'd like to see a strategy change that exploits this. I can also hope that a couple key linemen regaining strength after injury will help.

On defense I was glad to see them play CV and was pleasantly surprised to see Nate Hobbs benched. I don't know if that's the solution for the year, but I think it helped last night. Rotating Hobbs and Bullard at the slot might be a good idea? Or maybe just keep Bull out there if he continues playing so well. He's been great against the run but bad in coverage sometimes, but if his coverage stays good?

Playing for 60 minutes in one game would really help, too. Add these elements together and I'm still not sure if that's enough to fix the inconsistency issue, but it'd have to help?

Congratulations Mark, you cracked the case! Even though labeled a TE, he has showed he can produce YAC on the boundary even if he doesn't line up wide.

He's also going to be getting attention as the #1 receiver which is good news for Doubs, Watson, Golden, Heath, and I hope Jacobs (get him the ball through the air) and Musgrave (12 personnel should be better).

To me, The addition of Watson is the biggest boost for Kraft. Not only his blocking, but more importantly he opens up the middle of the field for the big plays to happen there.

I'd definitely agree. It's no secret that being able to spread the defense vertically opens up the run and the short-to-mid range passing game, and Watson's ability and willingness to block for his teammates is no joke and was key to two TDs the last game. It's almost like if Allen Lazard had elite athleticism. Kraft YAC'ing it up now with a strong blocker further down the field ahead of him could lead to some really good things.

First, both have stated they collaborated closely. Love is effusive about the mentoring from Rodgers. Rodgers is and has been a big fan of Love.

And two, how do you not learn meeting with, practicing with, and watching a future HOFer play on game days. Especially if you are smart and driven like Love seems to be?

And Rodgers would also tell you he learned from Favre...even though the relationship was cool.

I was infuriated with the first offensive series, third and one and we can’t run Jacob’s, if doesn’t get so be it. The second half was a whoop ass performance. Unfortunately, the CB situation is a BIG problem. Hobbs is a slot guy, not CB and Nixon is a backup CB at best not starter. It pains me to think that our shut down CB was available in the first round in last years draft, DeJean. Gutey takes tackle Morgan. We need a CB more than an O lineman.
Now, 48 million dollars later we have a benched CB who is a slot corner, WTF!!! I’m sure our new CEO is well aware of this huge mistake, Gutey may not survive this bone head move and he shouldn’t.

Certainly we do NOT "need a CB more than an O lineman," but I'm thinking if we traded Wicks and Heath for a DT and a CB that could make this team better this year. Plus they won't keep both kickers on the 53 man roster, and can't stash either on the PS so add that to trade with. Tariq Woolen is an interesting CB ...

I’d trade Musgrave or Fitzpatrick for a good blocking first TE or trade him for a run first DT or a competent perimeter cornerback and pick a blocker off a PS. We don’t use a second TE offensively but we do try to use them to block. Having 2 that are not good blockers makes no sense to me. Then again, we could use a 6th OL.

there has to be value in a player to get something good in return. What value do either of them have?....I'd argue not even a draft pick at this point. Certainly not a competent CB or DT.

Love's completion streak started with the hurry up offense at the end of the first half. If I recall correctly Holmgren often started games fast, maybe to give Favre and the offense a rhythm. Should this team play hurry up right out of the blocks?

Quit running Savion up the middle and quit with the east and west passes.

I ain’t got the All-22, but did the Steelers load the box when both 9 and 0 were on the field? That would seem unwise.
