5 Takeaways From 49ers 10 - 38 Packers: Jacobs Was Born to Be a Packer
Jacobs has fit into Green Bay's offense seamlessly and is putting up impressive numbers on a weekly basis.
By markoldacres

Josh Jacobs was born to be a Packer
Speaking of rounding into form, Jacobs is proving week after week why Green Bay brought him in this offseason.
He tallied 26 carries for 106 yards and a hat-trick of touchdowns versus San Francisco, finally giving him a touchdown total (seven on the season) to match his rushing yardage production.
Jacobs seems to be gathering steam each week.
Over the last five games, Jacobs’s yards per carry is now up to 5.1, and he forced 15 missed tackles on Sunday, more than any back in any game this season. He became the first running back in the last 55 regular season games to rush for over 100 yards against the Niners.
Jacobs spoke after the game about why he chose to sign with the Packers, telling Tom Brady he felt he was “the missing piece”. It seems like he was born to run the ball in the winter in Green Bay.
Interception-free game for Love
For the first time this season, Jordan Love made it through a game without throwing a pick, but that is not to say it was a pristine game from Green Bay’s quarterback.
Love put the ball in jeopardy on multiple occasions, with one toss in particular fortunate not to be picked off, with a 49ers defender getting both hands on it.
Another pass slightly behind Romeo Doubs on a slant was tipped up in the air by the receiver and could have been hauled in by San Francisco, and Love also almost fumbled the ball when trying to escape a sack.
However, these few instances of good fortune arguably make up for his lone interception versus the Cardinals, which was solely due to Bo Melton slipping and not on Love.
There will probably always be a part of Love that takes unnecessary risks, but it is part and parcel of his playstyle and you have to take the bad with the good. He has played much cleaner over the last two weeks and is showing signs of rounding into form at the right time.
Xavier McKinney makes his mark
Brian Gutekunst is not a perfect GM, and has misses on his resume, but he has shown that he knows how to build a quality roster, and he has a remarkably strong track record in free agency.
The additions of Jacobs and McKinney are two more feathers in his cap, with both players contributing significantly to Green Bay’s 8-3 start to the 2024 season.
McKinney more than played his part on Sunday after an uncharacteristically lackluster performance against the Bears, breaking up a fourth down pass and later registering his seventh interception of the season.
In a defensive backfield which has been in flux all season, McKinney has been the constant reliable presence on the back end, producing game-changing plays regularly. Reminder: he is still only 25 years old and is under contract for three more years after this one.
Packers find red zone formula
After mixed results against the best red zone defense in the league last week in Chicago, the Packers found a recipe for success against a comparatively uninspiring 49ers unit.
Being able to run the ball effectively in a tight area of the field helped, with Jacobs slamming the ball into the end zone three times from close range.
Tight end Tucker Kraft has also proved to be a weapon in the red area, with his ability to break tackles and fight for extra yards proving valuable. He rumbled into the end zone on Sunday on a tight end screen, knocking over his own center Josh Myers in the process.
After going five for five in the red zone this week, the Packers will hope to build on a successful day and replicate that success going forward and lift their success rate away from the bottom of the league.
Drops continue to be an issue
While the red zone issues were not present on Sunday, Green Bay’s problem with drops continued to rear its head.
The most high profile drop was Christian Watson’s, failing to bring in a sure score before halftime which would have served as the killshot for the 49ers and added a 49-yard touchdown to Love’s statline.
Doubs also failed to corral a pass from Love which was not thrown perfectly, but was certainly catchable, and this nearly led to an interception.
Drops did not ultimately hurt the Packers this time, but it is something the pass-catching group must continue to work on.
With Doubs now dealing with a concussion and unlikely to be ready to face the Dolphins on Thanksgiving, it should open the door for Dontayvion Wicks to see more playing time and prove he has put his dropping problem behind him.

I think Jacobs is going to be a great cold weather back for the Packers. I just hope the O-line stays healthy enough to block for him. Our O-line depth is concerning.
Waiting for TGR's "Snap Count" article. My favorite article of the week and haven't seen it yet.

Bummer not to have TGR's article yet. Sounds like Eric Stokes played about as much as Carrington Valentine, which was not what I expected. I'm also curious to see just how few snaps Dontayvion Wicks got before Romeo Doubs got knocked out of the game. It was good to see Wicks finally get a reception, and it was a nice easy one.

The site was down for a long time this morning, so I hope TGR just missed his window and will be on later or tomorrow. I miss those snap counts too.

Jacobs is a BEAST! He runs so hard and just plows over defenders and can also make some great moves. He will be fun to watch when the weather gets bad.

That spin move in the open field in the first quarter was just sick.

With Doubs out, maybe we can give Heath a few more opportunities as well. He's caught six of seven balls thrown his way this year, including that nice TD near the end of the game.

Jacobs is a better fit for this offense than Jones was, and that's saying a lot. Jones was more boom and bust while Jacobs is a steady presence, which is what you need from your running game. He's not a home run hitter, but he's constantly hitting doubles and triples. Our passing game has plenty of pizazz, and now we have a power running game to complement it. Jacobs's YPC in this game ended up at a very average 4.1, but it suffered a bit due to the three 1-yard touchdown runs.

Yeah, if you take off the three 1-yard TDs his average is closer to 4 1/2. But the 9ers had to devote a lot of people to keep that average down and when he was off the field they relaxed and it paid dividends for Willson, who I bet had a nice average even though he was stuffed a couple times too.

Wilson got stuffed in the last drive in garbage time, but otherwise those two just get yards. A nice tandem. I’d personally like to see Wilson get those near laterals that went to Brooks. He’s done quite a lot with them earlier in the year. It’s nice to know we can spell Jacobs and still have a first down threat.

I was jumping up and down so much I had to go to the blue tent for cramps.
I can't believe people think a running game is boring. I guess if you're watching a team you don't care about just trying to burn up the clock on another team you don't care about, it's boring, but who care about them?

Jim Brown. Boring. Gale Sayers. Boring. OJ, Earl, Dickerson...boring boring boring. Marshawn Lynch in beast mode. Boring. Derrick Henry........
As the man said, "I do not think that word means what you think it means". Watching a RB take over a game is a lot of things, but boring things don't make people jump out of their seat and scream.

If Saleh is unofficially coaching the Packers as an advisor for the offense, why not just make it official and hire him as part of the coaching staff for the rest of this year and beyond. Whether offense or defense (more the latter), then the more wise & experienced NFL schemes by veteran coaches help the Pack. Let's get it done, LaFleuzy!

I read where he's helping during the week and goes home on Fridays. Taking it easy and getting ready for his next gig (which will come soon, I bet).

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Saleh can do a lot better than just being an offensive consultant. He can probably at least land a job as a defensive coordinator.

Don't have to hire Saleh, the Jets are paying him for us.
He's probably cool keeping busy, hanging out with his buddy and still collecting his remaining millions from the Jets.
Life is good for Robert Saleh.

Josh Jacobs.......
Exactly, who the Packers 'wanted' A J Dillon to be as a 2nd round draft pick in 2020.
Well, that didn't/wasn't/isn't going to happen.
But now, 14 million dollars later, and the Packers got their power back this season.
Is Thanksgiving here yet? 😁

Taking everything into account, Gutekunst has done a very good job. How do we know? The Packers made it to the playoffs last year, and had a chance to advance to the championship game. But, as usual, the Niners were there to spoil the party. This year, their record is 8-3. Could Love be playing better? Sure. So could the defense. And the receivers could drop fewer passes. But, as stated, he has put together a winning team. All they need to do is build momentum for the playoffs, and the sky's the limit.

Agree with you on the job Gutekunst has done. But he is clearly better at free agency and later round drafting than making early draft selections. All of these 1st and 2nd round picks the last 5 years have been underwhelming?

2023 Van Ness & Musgrave
2022 Quay , Wyatt, Watson

It's really interesting in this era of "pod-casting" to hear the truth finally emerge from retired players.
"Getting the bag" performance drop-off is a bona fide thing.
Wrong player in the wrong coaching scheme is another.
To your list above, Stokes and AJ Dillon are the only real disappointments here. Stokes avoids contact and Dillon can't stay on his feet after contact...... and both have a 4 year resume (so their traits are set).
Morgan and Musgrave are on IR, so injury is stifling their development. Sean Rhyan and Josh Myers quietly had one of their best games as Packers, so I think that Morgan will click soon. Musgrave is in a dog-fight with Tucker Kraft, but is a better receiving weapon. Don't count him out later in the season to get back on the field and impact the game.
I'm not giving up on LVN yet, Maxx Crosby took 3 years to really start making a name for himself.
....... but to your main point, Gute's a dumpster diving and FA magician.

RE: LVN vs Crosby.
Crosby was an UDFA IIRC. LVN was a 1st round pick. You don’t expect the same learning curve. LVN has been a bust so far. I hope he picks it up.

I'd hardly call him a bust. We're getting production out of him. First, he's been physically available to play in every game, which means he's practicing and developing and not soaking in a tub. He's playing about 40% of the defensive snaps, which is more than last year, and he's a core special teams guy (which, as you know, I don't think it means anything but some other people do). He was in on 32 tackles as a rookie and he's on pace to do a little better.
IMO, this is what's called drafting and development, and patience, of a guy who is only 23. I have Tshirts older than that. We're going to have him on the team for another two, or three, or more years. Every ear of corn tassles out in its own time and there's nothing you can really do to hurry the process..

Van Ness is another "Gutey special" - another contrarian pick that goes against conventional wisdom, much like the pick of Jordan Love in 2020, the QB with more interceptions than any other college QB in 2019. Trade up and give away your 1st round pick and 4th round pick to take Jordan instead of trading up to grab Justin Jefferson or Brandon Aiyuk or staying put and taking Tee Higgins or Michael Pittman - and there goes the Super Bowl for 2021, 2022, 2023 and beyond. So close and Gutey thrown it away.
Draft a guy in Van Ness that never started a game in his College Career - for good reason - when you have the highest rated receiver with the 4th best 20 yard shuttle and 12h best 3 cone drill since 2007 available and plenty of edge rushers available later in the draft including Tuli Tuipolutu - who led all of college football at USC in 2022 with sacks with 13.5 and has 7 sacks this year coming into tonight's Raven game - and Byron Young, Kobie Turner - all with double and triple Van Ness's performance.
And "Gutey" also passed on Will McDonald and then watched the Jets pick McDonald with the pick you just gave the Jets. 8 sacks this year for McDonald to Van Ness' 2 with yesterday's sack included.
Just listen to Mike Wahle on Van Ness.
And then you - "Gutey" - pick Luke Musgrave and pass on Darnell Washington who is laying out linebackers while run and pass blocking - a 6th lineman - and is a premier red zone threat in short yardage.
These types of choices though are consistent with those of a pompous, irrational, insensitive, legend in his own mind, stuffed shirt who never played a day of competitive football at a high level owes his start in football management to his father opening doors - nepotism can take you a long way, until it doesn't.

“He's a hall of fame GM for dumping Rodgers. End. Of. Discussion.”
Updated for yesterday’s 49ers game:
Over the last 4 games Jordan Love has thrown 3 TDs and thrown 3 interceptions and has a passer rating of 86.5.
Over the last 4 games Aaron Rodgers has thrown 7 TDs and thrown 0 interceptions and has a passer rating of 102.9.
Set aside the NFL/Packers media propaganda and hysteria and let those facts settle in when watching and analyzing Thursday Thanksgiving night’s game.
Also watch Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle without Rasul Douglas and Jaire Alexander to defend them – remember Christmas day, 2022 in Miami for comparison.

My main concern is over-working Jacobs. He told the O-line he was cramping 'everywhere' and left the field for awhile, possibly for IV fluids. I don't think he can carry that many times for the next 6 games. Wilson and others will need to share the load, IMO.
