2021 Packers Practice Roundup: Day One

Training camp has begun with the first practice yesterday, July 28, 2021.  Obviously, I am tardy with this roundup of media tweets describing what occurred, but we all have to shake the rust off.  The first practices will be in shorts and helmets to meet the new CBA requirements, which include no contact for the first three days.

GENERAL/PERSONNEL:

The Packers will have 6 players start on non-football injury list: OLB Za’Darius Smith, CB Kevin King, DL Kingsley Keke, S Will Redmond, S Henry Black, DE Tipa Galeai.  Bakh on PUP.  Wood [I read that Galeai passed his physical, so I am confused. TGR]

From the NFL transaction wire: TE Dominique Dafney goes to PUP and OLB Tipa Galeai passes his physical.  Schneidman

All the Non-Football Injuries from yesterday were all short term things, no major issues per Gute.  Herman

Davante Adams makes it clear why contract talks stalled with the Packers: “I’ve earned the right to be paid highest in the league.”  After All-Pro season, Adams is uninterested in signing for anything less.  Wood

Davante Adams makes clear he will not take a hometown discount, even if Aaron Rodgers returns in 2022: "What other profession do you take less than what you have earned?"  He wants to be the NFL's highest-paid WR, because he feels like he is the NFL's best WR.  Wood

First injury scare of training camp. Davante Adams slow to get up after catching a touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers a red zone period. Walked off under his own power talking to a medical staffer.  Demovsky [This is why it’s definitely time to send in the premium for the disability insurance policy.  TGR]

There's some decisions made that we wouldn't have in the past because we see what's out there for us.  Gutekunst on Rodgers long term:  Right now we're very focused on 2021.  Herman

Aaron Rodgers has a long list of players he feels the Packers treated poorly on the way out. Here are the 12 he named Wednesday: Charles Woodson, Jordy Nelson, Julius Peppers, Clay Matthews, Randall Cobb, James Jones, John Kuhn, Brett Goode, TJ Lang, Brian Bulaga, Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde.  Wood [Sigh, silence has its merits.  Keep talking like this and some of AR’s biggest apologists - like me - will have to re-evaluate things.  TGR]

I hope this is dead wrong, but...Aaron Rodgers sounded like a prisoner who just spent a lot of time and energy negotiating his eventual release but still has a sentence to serve.  Kruse

GM Brian Gutekunst: "Professional. It's always been a very professional relationship. I think our goals are always the same."  Wood.  [Rodgers also said his relationship with Gute was professional.  I have to wonder if this was coordinated.  TGR]

Rodgers claimed he did not leak any information and nor did his representatives.  Silverstein

Brian Gutekunst on Packers culture: "There's a perception out there somehow we don't treat our players well. That couldn't be further from the truth."  Wood

"I [Aaron Rodgers] just want to be involved in conversations that affect my ability to do my job."  Demovsky

Another nice play by Jordan Love to step up in the pocket, buy time and find Kylin Hill near the end zone. Hill was able to wiggle in for a touchdown. Nice stretch by Love here.  Herman

QUARTERBACKS/RECEIVERS:

GORGEOUS connection from Love to Amari for a td!!  Good coverage but a Rodgers-esque throw and a fantastic late hands catch from Amari. Play of the day so far.  Herman

LaFleur on Jordan Love: "I thought he did a really good job of taking ownership of the offense, taking care of the fundamentals and becoming a better player."  Wood

Rodgers w/ an extended conversation with Sternberger while Love was taking reps. Looks like Rodgers was just going over expectations of a play and encouraging him. If there was any question that Rodgers was going to just come in and go through the motions that won’t be the case.  Herman

For anyone wondering if Aaron Rodgers was all in for the season...Here he coaches up Kurt Beckett during a QB drill, with Jordan Love in the back taking notes.  Chancellor Johnson

Bailey Gaither with a very nice route against Ka’Dar but Love chooses to check it down. Gaither had nice separation on a deep comeback route.  Herman

No idea how 11 [Funchess] makes the team unless he somehow morphs into a special teams ace.  Kruse

Jace Sternberger starts off camp with a drop in team drills. Huge camp for Jace. Not the way he’d like to start.  Herman

Rodgers to Tonyan for an easy td in red zone. Tight ends continue to be a force in the red zone for this offense. Draft Tonyan in your fantasy league accordingly.  Herman

Love to Sternberger for an easy touchdown on a bootleg. Sternberger was left wide open. Another Nathaniel Hackett red zone special.  Herman

Rodgers to Adams for a touchdown now. Sullivan had no chance on Adams with a quick move to the outside.  Herman

Rodgers hits EQ on a nice deep corner route to the cheers of those in attendance.  Herman

Pretty throw and catch from Rodgers to EQ on Alexander for a TD in team.   Uglem [I put these together because I think both are about the same play.]

Malik Taylor makes a nice move in the open field against Kabion Ento to get some extra yards.  Herman

RUNNING BACKS:

Dexter Williams with a nice twisting, falling away catch in the back of the end zone against air from Aaron Rodgers. Showing off his hands. Big camp for Dexter.  Another Play:  Dexter Williams with a touchdown run inside. Nice play by Dexter who has had a nice practice.  Herman

First practice, no pads but Kylin Hill has some wiggle in his cutback when he hits the hole.  Hodkiewicz

Great extended catch from Aaron Jones in red zone who turns and runs in to the end zone. Great play by Jones.  Herman

Nice run by Kylin Hill to get to the second level. Amari in motion messed with the defense.  Herman

OFFENSIVE LINE:

The starters all day on the OL have been Jenkins, JRJ, Myers, Patrick, Turner. No sign of Braden or Newman rotating in.  Herman (corrects himself on Braden later - tgr).

Ben Braden getting snaps at RT, Jon Dietzen at RG and Cole Van Lanen at LT.  Silverstein

I think Kelly's a legitimate threat to start. When healthy, the Packers could go Bakh-Jenkins-Myers-Turner-Kelly That's a helluva group.  PFF did not credit Kelly with a sack allowed last season on 587 pass-blocking snaps.  Uglem

His [Dennis Kelly’s] nickname is the “war horse.” Dude is as steady as they come and plays thru just about anything.  Great conversationalist in the cafeteria.  Will Compton  [I love this nickname!]

Packers got a good look at him [Kelly] in December in Lambeau last year when he started for the Titans. Swing tackle who adds depth at the position.  Nagler

Packers giving Runyan and Big Ben Braden a shot at that open LG spot with Jenkins at LT.  Hodkiewicz

DEFENSE:

Starting defense:  Lowry, Clark, Lancaster, Preston, Barnes, Campbell, Gary, Alexander, Sullivan, Stokes, Amos, Savage.  Yes that’s 12 but depending on the package those are the starters.  Herman

Stokes with the ones to start team drills.  Herman

LINEBACKERS:

Gary just destroyed Turner off the line. No pads yet but his play has jumped off the field today.  Nagler

Rashan Gary has had a really nice practice and just beat Elgton Jenkins with a rip move for a would be sack if 12 wasn’t wearing red.  Herman

Veteran ILB DeVondre Campbell is starting alongside Krys Barnes.  Silverstein

DEFENSIVE LINE:

Great look at Slaton’s size. He’s a beast.  Herman [I know - so he’s big - but there was video of Slaton hitting a sled: he is BIG and did not look fat. TGR]

"For anyone wondering if Aaron Rodgers was all in for the season...Here he coaches up Kurt Beckett during a QB drill, with Jordan Love in the back taking notes. Chancellor Johnson"

THIS is what the season, and the eventual trade compensation for him, hinges on. If Aaron Charles Rodgers, who I believe to be not entirely sane, chooses to keep the clown show at bay this year, this is a Super Bowl team. On paper.

If not (and I am verrrrry skeptical/cautious), then we're looking at 10-7 and an early playoff exit, with lots of rancor and passive-aggressive pressers, and leaks along the way.

Could be a teensy bit of editorializing (LOL) but that perk is my only compensation for slogging through all the tweets: I get to choose what is news.

It's the right editing, TGR. This is HUGE for the season. Frankly, for the whole franchise long term.

I question a lot of things about AR but not if he's going to try at the QB position. The issues haven't been Rodgers not trying to do his job. It is Rodgers trying to do someone else's job.

Yes. But that's the thing - they're related. What if he plays his position VERY well again (not hard to imagine) but yells at teammates on the field (again), repeatedly throws Gute/Murphy and even the coaching staff under the bus in pressers (like he just did to the Front Office yesterday), and leaks to his buddies, (with plausible deniability of course) so they can leak to the media, about how he's misunderstood and mistreated by everyone around him?

Would that equate to a "successful" team that gels in January? I don't think so. I also think this outcome is entirely plausible. Perhaps even likely, with that presser we saw yesterday.

Trade him to Cleveland.

I still think Denver and Las Vegas are the two most likely destinations. And in March of 22, I'd be happy to trade him for 3 1st rounders and a defensive player, along with Adams for another 1st rounder and a Jeudy. But we're not there yet.

We just have to worry that Murphy and Gute, whatever their failings, have opened Pandora's Box. Let the Fox into the Henhouse. Showed their cards. They're all in for 21, hoping that he doesn't create chaos.

Bingo. Fortunately, if Aaron really does want out after this year, he is going to want to go out on top to draw as many suitors as possible. If he doesn't want out, I still think he's going to do everything he can, because he knows that longer leash he has been given can just as easily be a noose on which he hangs himself and the FO may just decide to cut bait. Either way, he knows he is the one eventually leaving, so I don't think we're going to get the open animosity we saw at the end of the MM era. Nobody is going to want to trade for a locker room cancer.

Adams- Fly High look low. Rodgers; Boss is still a four letter word. Sternberger doesn't need press. Interesting: Baptism by fire.

I chose to use a photo of Gute and LaFleur. Gute has assembled these players and now it is up to Head Coach LaFleur and his staff to teach them so as to make them the best they can be.

Love the War Horse nickname for Dennis Kelly.

Sure sounds like Adams wants $27.6M or more AAV. Not from GB is my answer, regardless of what happens with AR or what AR wants. I lean towards thinking Adams is delusional, but perhaps there is a team that will pay him that much money at age 30. I proposed a contract at $22M and am willing to stretch a point to $24M AAV, but my mind is not and GB's checkbook should not be any more elastic than that. Hopkins is an outlier and Hopkins is never going to see $27M.

Players tend to look good in shorts and helmets. Still, nice to read that Gary is starting where he left off. I have not yet eaten my crow as a previous CHTV article suggested, but I can be persuaded.

Guys on the bubble who got a positive mention: ESB, Dexter Williams, (maybe Funchess though it was just for mentoring) and Love threw some nice passes.

Sure sounds like he's gonna get tagged. Dumb.

Unrestricted Franchise Tag...then he can see what other teams will pay for him as it starts with 2 #1 draft picks.

Rodgers is a HOF QB, but would make a lousy GM. He wants to keep all of the expensive, aging vets. That era went out the window with the salary cap, but it seems Rodgers hasn't figured that out. And it is not like any other team is going to do it differently in the salary cap era. It is not the Packer FO that is his problem, it is the NFL- NFLPA contract that established the salary cap. He needs to think this through a little more.

He wants to keep the ineffective bottom of the roster guys with no special teams value too. He's super arrogant.

….So you’re saying he’s got a lot in common with John Elway. That irony isn’t lost on me if indeed he does end up in Denver next season….. especially with Fangio already reportedly on the hot seat.

Looking at Rodgers list of "abused players" almost all rang the golden bell in FA and were not cut, a few lasted one more year in the NFL, then retired or sat at home.

And the long snapper? Wasn't he having injury problems?

Did anyone think to tell Rodgers giving all 12 new contracts would have made his gigantic 2018 deal impossible?

Also, most of the 12 were abused by TT, not Gutey.

I am curious, why was Sitton not on Rodgers' abused 12? He was strangely cut....maybe Rodgers was involved? I do not know but Rodgers was on the 10 member advisory player committee when Sitton was cut. I was shocked at the time.

Your critique is not accurate, but (i) do not have the time nor the inclination to rebut that version of the ted-a-kunst game theory.

"What other profession do you take less than what you have earned?"
...
"First injury scare of training camp. Davante Adams slow to get up"

MANY PROFESSIONS! It's a risk to change employers and to be on a short term contract. It's called risk management. If Adams get hurt this season he's screwed. If he doesn't negotiate in reasonable terms he'll get tagged. If he signs some big deal and forms no connection with the QB he'll get cut. I am just really starting to question the intelligence of a lot of these guys and/or their agents. Either their agents are too dumb to explain the absolute basics or they are too dumb to listen. I guess the later.

The agents are more apt to tell their clients what they think the player wants to hear..."I can get more money for you than your current agent" or "I can get a better contract for you in (insert any other team here)." The agents need to do some of this to sell their services.

Leigh Steinberg is the only agent I read about whom I think is realistic with his clients.

Now that Adams is in camp, his $12.25M salary plus game active is pretty safe since he'd go on IR and he is a vested veteran. So, what is at risk is his signing bonus minus his base salary. In other words, $30M minus $12.25M or about $17.75M is at risk. Maybe he has a disability policy already.

Well, this was day one of TC. Those pressers skewed things a little. I look forward to future practice roundups articles because they should pretty much be just about what happened in practice.

Don't worry about it TGR. TC will bring a clear view in all things Packers. As for Rodgers, he knows what will happen to him in the locker room if he pulls his diva act. Just like 2013 when the OL nailed him on the sideline for not following the game plan. This group (the Smiths, Turner, etc.) will not let Rodgers get out of control, they too know how high the stakes are this season. I find it interesting that Gute made it clear where he drew his 'red line' on Rodger's antics. And if one thing became very clear yesterday, this is Gute's team, not Rodgers, not Lafleur's. The Packers as an organization are as 'old school' as one gets in the NFL. And Aaron Rodgers hate that. Good.
