Talk of 16-0 Begins

From the players to the front office, talk of an undefeated season has begun in Green Bay.

Perhaps overlooked because the article was posted at JSOnline's Packer Insider section that requires a subscription to view, but talk of an undefeated season has begun at 1265 Lombardi Ave.

Written by Rob Reischel of the Journal Sentinel's Packer Plus publication, his reporting finds out discussion of going 16-0 isn't something that's just beginning now.

"We started talking about going 16-0 before the season even began," safety Charlie Peprah is quoted as saying.

What's maybe more startling is that talk of being undefeated isn't limited to the locker room. It's coming from the front office as well.

"That's the plan. That's the plan," said Packers director of football operations Reggie McKenzie. "Our goal is to win every game ... and I think we'll have a chance."

Now the debate begins. Is this the mindset the Packers are supposed to take? After all, the goal is to win every game, right?

Or are they putting the cart ahead of the horse, becoming overconfident and perhaps even cocky?

I think this is a good attitude to have, as long as its grounded in reality. This team does have a chance to go 16-0, and I think it's fine they're talking about it.

It's a fine line that leads to cockiness/over-confidence, however. MM can keep the balance.

As soon as we lose one, then we can stop talking about going undefeated. IMO, that just becomes a distraction as the season moves on. I don't think our pass defense is good enough (at this point) to keep us from dropping one at some point. Having said that, I hope we do go undefeated. That would be pretty cool. But let's just think about beating Atlanta. Iknow that's what MM and the team are thinking about.

14-2. Good enough to set the franchise wins record, secure home field advantage but not wondering what might have been if we finish 15-1.

However, gun to head, I can't name the two losses so pull the trigger.

Tom Glavine would always say say, "The next game is the most important game of the season."

Good as this packer team is, there is a lot of room for improvement. One game at a time, and this week will be a big test.

Sounds like there are some folks around the league who share the sentiment.

From Mike Freeman yesterday:
There is a feeling among some in the NFL that the Packers have a better chance of running the table than did the 2007 New England Patriots.

Our schedule definitely plays into this.

Toughest challenges are probably San Diego, Thanksgiving and Christmas Night, games we'll still probably be favorites in.

An undefeated season takes talent + schedule + focus.

I think we have the three. But I still don't think we'll go 16-0.

I think the point of the 16-0 talk is that there isn't a game on the schedule this team won't be in contention. 16-0 takes a lot of luck and things falling your way.

This week at Atlanta, at San Diego, Tampa Bay, at Detroit on Thanksgiving, and at New York are all going to be really tough games. If Rodgers has an off day in any of those games, I could see bad things happening. Good thing he has so few off days.

Maybe your nervous about Atlanta because you're going to the game? I don't know. I'm really not worried about Sunday any more than any of the first four games. I just don't think our offense is going to be slowed down on that fast track with perfect weather. I know the birds squeaked one out there last season, but I don't think we played up to our potential in that one, I think the playoff game was more indicative of what kind of team we really were.. and now our O is better. This game is prime time, with Burt and roddys comments, I think you could see qb1 drop a fifty spot on them. Could be wrong.

I still think that there is no way MM goes 16-0 and why would you. If you are 14-0 and have home field in the bag why would you risk injury to your starters? Epically guys with years on them like, Woodson ,Clifton. I would use them like a preseason game just so they don't get rusty. 16-0 is just some writers dream of a story, because they also like to write about when you fail in the playoffs. Example:Pats

In the hypothetical situation that we are 14-0 and have home field wrapped up I would be against sitting our starters. I completely understand the injury risk but there is also a very real risk of rust. In that situation if we sit our starters there is almost a month (12/18/11 to 1/14or15/12) where our starters are inactive and our team is "not trying" to win. That's just far too long to expect the team to easily flip the switch back on. It really is a catch 22 but personally I'd err on the side of trying to keep momentum.

Of course, if they did sit their starters the Pack would probably still score 50 points a game in the playoffs on their way to the championship and Rodgers would mock me for suggesting it could be a problem.

I completely agree. See the 2009 Colts. I almost hope the Lions win all their games except Thanksgiving going into the last game of the year if we win all our games so we can see MM keep his foot on the gas pedal. I don't really care about going undefeated, I just hate seeing McCarthy taking his foot off the pedal and letting people stay in games. I also want to see Rodgers break Brady's TD record...

The goal should be 16-0. That said, hearing this conversation begin at only 4-0 is making me awfully nervous. There are some VERY loseable games. Demovsky said it last night - 11-5 isn't out of the question.

The Pack should compete in every game this season, but 16-0 is an AWFULLY daunting task.

Given all the consternation here over the last week about the ineffectiveness of the pass rush, and questions about the defensive secondary, this post is a little bit ironic. (In all fairness to the author of this post, I don't think the last sentence applies to him.) Me, I can't even process 16-0 right now. The offense is carrying the team. Good teams win in multiple ways. I can't say that I can see this team beating the Lions 9-0 right now. I'm not pushing the panic button on the defense, but it has to show some progress before I can dream about the Packers going 16-0.

The lockerroom talk will be what it is. MM will take care of that (if Finley ever shuts up). Peprah needs to be careful, he's not in a position to be too open, here.

For the rest of us, its way too early; let's talk after Detroit. First, they are a good team and we lost to them last year; second, Philly or somebody will right their ship and come storming into the playoffs like the Pack have done in the past.

(tongue in cheek): I'm surprised that we haven't talked about this sooner! Oh, never mind!

If a team says they are looking to win each of their games this season, then most people wouldn't have a problem with that kind of attitude.

Turn it into a conversation about going 16-0, however, and suddenly things are different. Being undefeated becomes more than just winning every game, it's the actual realization of the goal.

So at the basic level, there is nothing wrong with having a team wanting to win all of their games. Isn't that the point of playing them? Where people get bent out of shape is the notion that they can actually accomplish it.

But don't they need a goal? During the offseason, weren't we talking about how the goal of winning the Super Bowl might not be enough this season?

We said at the time that winning the division was a good goal for 2011 since they didn't accomplish it last year. If they instead change it to winning all of their games, then more power to them. The only difference is that this particular goal can end much more abruptly.

I never like boasting.

The NFL is tough as it is, if you overlook someone you lose.

That being said, I can make a serious case that we overlook the Panthers and still won.

And, from what I'm hearing and seeing, it looks like MM has made a point to try to embarass opponents. I know Rodgers will NEVER overlook an opponent, I believe the rest of the team is feeling the same.

I do think they have a great chance, I just think that there's just too much. If they run the table at 14-0 and secure everything, I doubt MM will play Rodgers 4 quarters against a hungry and contending Detroit.

I hate this kind of talk. I doubt Mike McCarthy has much use for it either. The Packers pass defense doesn't look like that of a 16-0 team. And where's the pass rush? Let's worry about the Falcons Sunday night. I don't anticipate that being an easy game.

yeah, I would love it if the Packers manage to run the table. But holy crap is 16-0 is such a high expectation that anything short of that could be perceived as a failure. Would they be considered slackers if they went 13-3 or even 14-2 when judged against an expected 16-0?

Then again, declarations like that make me feel incredibly superstitious and feel more like a curse than a a goal to attain.

My worry isn't about how hard it is to go 16-0. It's about how hard it is to go 19-0. 18-1 with a 16-0 start isn't nearly as nice as 14-6 was last year..

i think we can set our sight even higher. how about a 17-0 regular season? ("... these go to 11")

i think there is ALWAYS only bad things to come from translating success into ponderings of invincibility.

it's a sort of cycle where the cliche comes from (one game at a time), because whenever you start thinking about achieving the goal 23 steps down the road, you start to realize all the baggage that comes with that, and you (hopefully) come back to the fact that the only way to get to 23 is to do the one in front of you today. it's why a recovering alcoholic doesn't wake up and say "i'm going to stay sober for the next 30 years, no problem."

i also think it's telling that b.b.'s patriots are the only team to do it - in general, i think it may as well be a crap shoot between any of the really good teams each year - why didn't the cowboys in the 90's do it, or the rams later? i think discipline has something to do with increasing the probability.

but i still think the rest of the variables are too numerous and too unpredictable for the discussion to mean much. i think if we're 15-1, i'd say there's about a 50% chance we could pull it off.

also, i consider that i'm less than a year away from wondering if MM would ever commit to the run to slow down the pace of a game, and if the Packers would ever go anywhere notable with him at the helm. Obviously, I feel differently now, but the final gun at the Super Bowl does not define this team - the up and down journey they took to get there does.

Ultimate goal should be winning Super Bowl 46 completing back-to-back titles. But I think 16-0 or relaly 19-0 is something to shoot for. This team certainly is talented enough to do it. Baring injuries or the defense really screwing up a game they have a great shot at it. Would love to see it. At worst this team goes 14-2.

I remember undefeated talk from players before the SB XXXI followup season, maybe it was Leroy Butler who said "all we were thinking about is how many points we would score" and they laid an egg at Philly in Week 2.

The Packers should be favored in every game this season. But you learn things from losing too.

I'll take whatever record brings us another SB title. 16 & 0 or 19 & 0 isn't going to happen this year - the D has too many holes.

I think with a little retooling of the D next year an undefeated 2012-13 campaign isn't out of the question.

First: I'm for anything that shuts up those '72 Dolphins once and for all. Instead of popping champagne corks they can stick the bottle up their pooper.

Second: I want to thank BF (not BFF) for putting a chip on AR's shoulder. I think it now guarantees a 16-0 season.

Third: I wouldn't be surprised if MM was responsible for the front office comments. I love the pyschology of this. Hard to have a SB hangover when a perfect season is dangled in front of you. MM wanted the team to play attacking football not from the mindset of "defending" SB champs. Even if they're not perfect, 13-3 or 14-2 is damn good for the reigning SB champ.

1st: I like the idea of a 16-0 season. I don't like the talk of it.
2nd: Let the season unfold one game at a time. It's like when McCarthy talks about stacking success. The awards and accolades occur as a result of focusing on what's in front of you. Like Capers telling Matthews to keep playing like he's playing, and the sacks and big plays will come. If they secretly want 16-0, then fine. Just stack successes till you get there.
3rd: Once we're 10-0 the media will blow this thing up anyways. Then you have to deal with all of that new pressure. Don't start the pressure until you have to.
In the meantime. Just play your best football.

I like the statement, "The most important game is the next one!" That's what MM should (and probably does) preach to the Packers. I worry about so many guys not practicing. They need it that time as much as anyone. It almost seems as if the Doctor controls our fate. VERY conservative. If you lose, no one cares how many guys sat out. It's just an L.

I badly want the Packers to have some major achievement like this. The Dolphins can always say they had the perfect season. The Steelers can say they have the most superbowls. We can say we have the most championships and we won the first 2 super bowls. But no one could ever forget this team if we did something like a true perfect season (sad that the patriots don't get any credit for winning 18 straight games in a season) Lots of teams have won superbowls, but only one team has been perfect. And a perfect season of 19 and 0 would be even bigger.

If we can't get the perfect season, then I'll settle for another record that no one has:

THREEPEAT! Only 2 more in a row guys.

I don't need a perfect season. As long as we don't lose to the Bears, I'll be happy.

I would have been happy last year with no embarrassing losses and beating the Bears twice. But Mike really made up for the dodgy start to the season and then losing to the Lions with the whole "beating the Bears in the NFC Championship game" thing. It wiped away all memories of Sid Luckman for all time. And that whole "Super Bowl" thing was just icing on the cake. And the whole bar then chanting, "FUCK BRETT FAVRE" was pretty cool, I admit it. But rather than just happy, the moment was ecstatic.

I don't expect ecstasy every season. That would be unreasonable. Beating the Bears would be enough.

So really, the so far perfect season really is far exceeding expectations. If we don't win again until Christmas Day, I won't whine and bitch. I plan on relaxing and just enjoying the ride. Because my beloved Green Bay Packers have proven that Bears Still Suck for the next half-century or so. And all Cheeseheads on earth have been healed of the whole Favre thing. Remember him? He was that guy who was our QB for a while, just after Don Majkowski, but before Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, I don't remember much about that guy either.

Really, I just don't think life can be better than this. I don't have the guts to ask for more.

Does anyone else feel like this team is still sort of under the radar. I mean everyone knows and recognizes the fact that they are good ,but I still feel as if they are under-hyped.

I know it is early, but it just doesn't feel like it felt when the Patriots went 16-0. That team was hyped/talked about all season long.

I think the "dream team" is taking away a lot of the focus. For the better, I think.
