Gary is the real deal he’s going to make a name for himself this year , he seems very focused now.

Gary was always focused, according to the coaches. He just has a lot to learn, given the way he was used in college versus what he is doing for the Pack.

I'm a 'show me the proof first' when it comes to Gary. Before they drafted him I thought he reminded me of an exact copy of Perry. Guys who could make a play once in a while but tended to go missing in games, lots of small injuries but knew when they had to light it up for da mooney. Perry's best year, his contract year. Before and after not so much.
Gary was handled by the better O linemen in the big 10. Had his best days against the not so good schools, missing in the big time games at MSU and OSU.

Perry was not the number 1 prospect coming out of high school , yes Gary he had lesser numbers against certain schools but he was double teamed and even tripled with a back , that’s a lot of attention paid to one player.

He. wasn't double-teamed last year and did next to nothing

What makes you say he did next to nothing? He was somewhat productive in the snaps he had. Everyone knew he would be brought along slowly b/c at Michigan he was not used in the same role. He was used to eat blocks in college, not as a primary pass rusher. The biggest issue with him is that they didn't put him on the field b/c they had the Smith Bros. It wouldn't have been a smart thing to do to take them off the field a ton last year. I mean compare Gary to the 4th overall pick, Clellin Ferrell. Ferrell played roughly 3x the snaps Gary did and ended up with 8 QB hits and 4.5 sacks. If you triple Gary's playing time and he plays according to the average, he would have been more productive than the 4th overall pick. They didn't draft Gary for what he would bring the defense as a rookie; they brought him in b/c unlike a lot of high draft picks, he is not a one-trick pony. He will be able to set the edge against the run and develop as a pass rusher. No one who dug a little deeper into the draft pick would have expected him to have a breakout year as a rookie.

"Next to nothing" because he did "next to nothing" to help the team win. As for the future, looks much like the past. He won't be replacing the Smith Bros so he'll be a highly drafted sub again. Projecting what he "might' have done with more snaps isn't making the case that he's a good player, only that he could be. Where do you see him getting enough snaps to be a valuable contributor?... as a replacement pass rusher?... okay, but still a sub. Not what you want from a #12 pick in his second year. He was a bad pick even if he turns out a decent player. You want a difference-maker when picking that high.

Athletically Gary is not an exact copy of Perry.....what specifically makes him like Nick Perry?

Perry’s issue was injuries, not lack of desire to play unless money was on the line.
You should check out Perry’s per snap production vs any of the top pass rushers in the game the year after he signed his deal. He was right up there.
The typical perry narrative doesn’t align with the actual production.
Did perry ever live up to his contract? No, but it wasn’t because of a lack of talent or desire. His body just didn’t cooperate.

Thank you for stating something that goes against the average angry Packer fan's views on Perry. He was a productive player even when he was hurt. His issue was never talent; his body just didn't hold up. And I have never been able to understand how you can blame a human being for having the body he was born with, unless he was lazy; didn't train correctly, etc. And that was not true about Perry. He did the right things.

If Gary takes a leap this year, as most indications suggest. and continues on any upward trajectory thereafter, there will be no buyer's regret here. As a youth sports coach and as a fan of the professional game, it was an easy observation that the hardest worker on the team was often the team MVP and if he wasn't, he was in the top 2 or 3.
