They had to tag him this year because of the lack of money. I’m sure they talked to him and said with all the FA leaving us next year....he will get his extension no problem. I don’t think he will be or is upset at all.

Technically all teams with a round one pick player from that year on their roster are contractually obliged to notify their intent to exercise the option by this Friday. That’s why teams are announcing that they are declining or exercising those options now.
I don’t read anything other than that into it. It doesn’t necessarily mean a player will receive a second contract (see HHCD), just that they are contracted through the final two years of the 5. That sets the basis for further discussions regarding extensions or new contracts, including the 2 year timeframe to conclude one.
Most teams seem to do so in the off season after year 4. The failure to negotiate at that point was what led to HHCD’s comments last year. I think our cap position makes that timing more appropriate anyway in this case.

Not many teams bypass the 5th-year option in favor of an earlier long-term extension. Sure, the Packers are low on available cap-space now, but they could find ways to structure a deal so it fits this season, yet, if they really wanted to.

Usually there isn’t much incentive for teams to do so. The rookie contract is going to be far less costly for a 1st round draft pick good enough to be extended and retained for a second contract. For those deemed useful but not great, the option is typically to decline and negotiate. With Clarke, the team admits, we can see and the player and agent know his value and potential.
The only reason to jump the gun this season would be to spread a mammoth contract into this year for cap purposes. Even then I believe that can be done at anytime in the current league year.
This is not a circumstance of a player potentially breaking out and rocketing up his value. At 23 today, Clarke is young enough and has shown enough that it’s going to be a big contract.

The appraisal of Montravius Adams as a player on the cusp of becoming a true force interested me. He flashed at the end of last year, but if he really comes on our D line will be able to stay fresh and still constantly threaten to blow up plays. I hope you are right.

Clark will get a deal , Mike Daniels will be gone . Between the two Clark has the upside .
