One thing to watch for in each phase of the game as the Green Bay Packers prepare to take on the Carolina Panthers in Week 2...

  • Offense: The Panthers would seem to be weakest on defense right up the gut where two rookies start at the defensive tackle positions, Sione Fua and Terrell McClain, and starting middle linebacker Jon Beason is out for the year. Dan Connor replaces him. The interior of the Packers offensive line is light years more experienced by comparison. Green Bay hasn't been known as a punishing running team, but maybe this is the matchup they need to show themselves they can run it up the gut. If T.J. Lang, Scott Wells and Josh Sitton can't see ample success in both the run and the pass game today, there's issues.
  • Defense: If Tramon Williams is out, that's going to mean Jarrett Bush is going to see a whole lot of playing time. The Packers will probably play more 3-4 base this week than last, meaning the nickel back isn't on the field as much, but Bush would still get his fair share of playing time. The question is whether they want him defending the slot or Charles Woodson. If Bush is playing the slot, that means more matchups with the Panthers new targets at tight end like Jeremy Shockey and Greg Olson, which will be a challenge. Woodson is also at his best versus the slot. If he doesn't play there, will his strengths be nullified?
  • Special teams: The kickoff and punt coverage units looked as poor as ever last week against the Saints. They have see improvement in that phase of the game, or special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum will be on the hot seat. Rookie tight end Ryan Taylor, who's been praised for his work on special teams, is back after sitting out of last week's opener with an injury. Will his presence help in trying to bottle up Armanti Edwards on kick returns and Mike Goodson on kick returns?
